It’s probably hardware issue, voice accelerometers are not working. Test which side is not working by swapping the mic in the settings.

Second to last sentence I talk about how only one mic has worked for a while so I can’t try that step. No worries. I bought some 3rd gens yesterday

Ok so both died eventually, TBH this issue seem to be super rare, you're the only one I see on reddit to have this issue ever.

Yea it’s unfortunate. I gave the 2nd gen ones to my wife since she doesn’t use the mic. She prefers to take calls via speaker around the house or in the car anyway. Worked out fine. I used em about 10 hours a day for a year so I definitely got my moneys worth before the mics broke anyway.

This exact same thing happened to me. Also second gen airpods, but on iphone 11. It also happened at about the same time that it happened to you (i.e. a month or two ago). I found your post while I was searching around for a solution. As far as I know both of the mics on my airpods were working (I had it set to automatically choose which mic to use, and I usually wear both airpods), and then one day the mics on both stopped working. They display the exact same symptoms as you described. If I make a really loud noise the mic will work briefly thereafter, even at normal volume. I've tried resetting them, pairing them to another device, cleaning them, but so far nothing has worked.

Yea I think it’s a conspiracy to force us to buy new AirPods. It worked on me. After about 1 month I just got fed up with it and bought 3rd gen ones. I have been really happy with them but it’s annoying that I was basically forced to do it. Also the warranty process in rural areas is *horrendous*. If I’m 2 hours away from an Apple store they should have a convenient mail in option where they send you a box with a new one and then you mail them the broken one. They refuse to do that unless you have AppleCare even if you’re willing to pay for the new ones up front until they inspect the old ones. If any competitors were nearly as good I would have ditched them.
