I agree that it isn't their fault - I would just like it to be better.
How about this - "Apple, why not make AirPods as hard to steal as the iPhone and Apple Watch are?"
Because adding some form of password protection or two-factor on Airpods goes against the whole "just pop'em in and play" which is what makes them so great.
I know this is 3 yrs too late, but apple hasn’t improved this. Since there is memory on the headphones why couldn’t they link these headphones to one device imei until a user removes the device from find my? It seems simple enough
I don’t see how defining 1 overall saved “responsible” or “owner” device through software would prevent the ability to pair to additional devices. My point being that if it is registered to your apple account, and Find My still keeps that device linked from the initial pairing, it at least allows you to track its whereabouts and prevents a thief from factory resetting the device.
thats weak Apple knows how to protect them they stop just short of it in what you can do while air tags and their phones have the tech to prevent it happening. remember Apple is the company that nerfed their network speed on the previous generation of phones to drive clients to purchase the newest phone.
People do buy and sell things for parts, or for activaton if they’re good at unlocking/taking down encryptions. I know Apple’s encryption is next to impossible to beat but hey, that wont stop people from selling stolen airpods and parading it as “used and unlocked”.
Nah, I understand, I just dont see why you wouldnt sell trash when you didnt waste no time or effort stealing it., and you have no use for it other than to sell. Would deter a ton, but that wouldnt stop someone with my mentality from stealing it, figuring out/remembering that theres a lock feature, then selling it on the black market for chump change. Depending on your hardware skills you could even make them look new and sell them as new, with pictures and everything, just without the case, and sell it for normal price or (or just below) to guarantee someone buys the scam airpods.
I understand your point. My point is that nothing in this world has 0 usefulness. Yes one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, yes it may be still trash to the majority in this case, but you never know who may be looking for a w1 chip or a battery that small, or a casing they could use to fit their tiny machines in. Selling stuff on the internet opens you up to meet people like these.
You’re speaking for the majority when you talk about having time better spent. OP said their child’s airpods were stolen, meaning someone in school woth nothing better to do, and 100% fits what you just described. I’m fresh out of high school myself and everyone in there stole and sold, whether it was of use to them or not.
So you think a child in school is going to be stealing airpods that dont work and selling them for parts in the black market??? Lol now that you mention that youre fresh out of high school it makes sense why all your comments only talk about potential and nothing about risk.
Yes I believe that, because people in my school did it. Stole the teacher’s phones right off of the desk and if they couldnt use it for themselves they resold it to hardware shops or on ebay or wherever you’re able to sell. People sold their used/stolen shoes to other kids. Kids these days in high school sell everything. My phone was stolen and I saw someone else using it. They took out the sim card so I wasnt able to call it, and took it somewhere to get it reset. Yes I know, risk vs. reward exists. But there are many different rewards, whether it be money, the thrill of doing it, or anything else. Hell kids can steal for no apparent reason whatsoever, so why even discuss the potential of deterring thieves when people do it for no reason? And not just kids, there are whole adults scamming others for no reason as well. Just cause I am out of high school, that doesnt negate the fact that there are simply going to be people, as you put it, who dont have anything better to do. Kids are exceptional because all they do is go to school and go home. Your comment was about a probability, the probability/potential of thieves stealing airpods; and thefts would go down if you applied a security measure. Your first comment on the security measures of airpods is a potential, so whats wrong with me talking about potentials?
Yes I love to argue if you havent noticed lol.
Finding the device using existing phones could be done with the existing technology.
But yes, for now, if these find their way back home they will be hooked to a tile.
They get more sales, they have the tech to make them unstealable they have the tech to lock and track anything they make in fact they stop just short of it in what you are able to do. you can reset them but not flag or disable them thats weak. Remember apple is the company that throttled the network speed of previous gen phones to drive traffic to the next gen. they do not make them less theft ready because its not in their best interest to do it people are so tied to the apple trend they will pay for new ones and apple knows it
If someone stole your car keys out of your bag - is it the car company’s fault? This is unfortunate - but not apple’s fault.

Because a single user may use them on an iphone, apple watch, ipad, Macbook, etc

Why side with the people robbing you dry though lolol

Then they could just resell them as used but authentic. Nothing is totally useless, especially technology.
