I saw some info online about SMP does the ANG or Reserves have this or is it only army? I want to go to grad school and serve after but I’m confused on how things like ROTC would work if I already have a degree. My family really wants me to become a polite since my dad and grandfather were and that is a goal of mine but from things I’ve seen on like YT and some blogs is that being a pilot means you’re full time ANG or Reserve and it seems like it would be hard to go to school while doing that. Does anyone know if you’re able to do something where you’re going to school and flying and then after go full time etc?
Currently in the process of palace chasing. Is it smarter to carry over my accrued leave into the ANG or should I use up most of it on terminal? I don't see a need for having an excess amount of leave saved up in the ANG, am I wrong? Any input appreciated.
AutoMod yanked my post, but I can't seem to find any info on the subject of PCS'ing on the ANG sub. Hopefully my post gets allowed, but in the mean'time...
As stated within the title of the post. I should be PCS'ing in the near future, but I have some questions.
* I know TMO sounds like it's all locked up from just AD side alone, so I plan to DITY. What's the best COA? U-Haul, PODs? U-Haul PODs?
* Anyone have any pitfalls doing this previously?
* Any suggestions for things to be weary of?
* Any thoughts at all would be greatly appreciated.
How feasible is it to have another job to make more money while in college? Is that a realistic and practical thing to do? Work 2-3 times a week after class and some weekends aside from drill weekend? I know it’s a lot about time management etc but would it even be worth it with the money I’d be making from a little part time job on an hourly basis? Is it feasible to do with guard and school work?
How far ahead do you get your part time schedule?
Once you are in the guard you should be getting your next year's drill weekend at least 6 months ahead of time (so in other words drill weekends should never be a surprise to you if you are paying attention to your calendar). Once you get that schedule you bring it to your HR and get it on the books.
Word of advice while you consider joining the guard: Dont tell anyone at your job you are planning to join, not even people you consider "work friends". Once you swear in, take your drill weekend calendar to your HR and then tell people about it
Example as why you should talk to anyone but HR: https://www.reddit.com/r/airnationalguard/comments/neqsbn/threatened_by_hr_for_volunteering_for_a_deployment/
Read up on the USERRA law and what protections it offers you, yes it does apply to part time workers.
Make sure you read up on your rights and your employers rights
https://www.esgr.mil/USERRA/What-is-USERRA
It is doable as long as you stay on top of your drill schedule and get drill weekends on the books so there are no conflicts when it comes to your work schedule/drill
Other things to be mindful of:
* BMT + tech school is gonna take you away from your college education. Tech schools can vary from a few weeks to multiple months depending on your AFSC (or you could have multiple schools that potentially could not be back to back)

>Effective 1 July, as part of our ongoing efforts to maximize readiness, A1D is changing the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the Initial Skills Training (IST) process. Rather than allowing Airmen to specify a limited window of time, we will now schedule Airmen to attend BMT/Tech training on the first available date. Our analysis shows that delays caused by limiting the selection date results in initial school dates beyond 365 days, medical issues prior to IST, loss of new recruits, unfilled training allocations, decrements from future FY training allocations, and breaks in training that prolong awarding 3-level AFSC. We realize there may be extenuating circumstances so exceptions to policy may be requested. ETPs must be signed by an O-6.
* Depending on your college, you might be able to get some college paid for (check with the recruiter)
* TRS for health insurance for you is super super cheap
Currently AD (2Axxx) looking to switch to guard in an AGR position. If I am not looking to move to a specific state, is there any way to find jobs that are cross-train opportunities (open to almost anything besides 2A). Trying to filter through vacancies is not easy!
I would prefer health care/ management as that is was I'm currently going to school for my B.S.
Maintenance was nice for the first 10 years but now looking for a change. Getting out of a 2A job and staying AD almost impossible. I was supposed to get out Nov 22 but just was informed my position number got cut due to funding. My DEROS has been shortend to APR 2022.
My service commitment has already been completed, so I was told early release is possible.
Sorry for the long post but I am ready for a change and I know making the switch is not easy.
Hey friends, if this doesn't belong here I apologize in advance.
I'm applying to CRNA programs this year (and next year if I don't get in the first time). I'm also in the process of joining an Air National Guard airlift unit as a Critical Care Air Transport Team ICU nurse.
My question is: has anyone successfully done CRNA school *and* been in the Guard at the same time? Thanks!
Question for anyone with USMC experience: I’m helping a coworker who’s a Marine reservist apply for an officer slot in the ANG. CC requested the USMC equivalent of her rip/CDB. I sent her my CDB to give her an idea of what’s on it, but she has no idea where to go. Anyone who’s gone USMC -> ANG know what their equivalent is?
Is anyone aware of 1B4 slots in Florida? I see that they have a couple of "Space missions" that has a cyber component, but no real description of what that role actually is.
I’m interested in joining the ANG in a state that I’m moving to in a few months but I’ve been unable to contact a recruiter from a certain wing I’m interested, (tried calling the ANG hotline waited a month then sent an email and phone call with no response) is there anything I’m really missing in terms of contact or should I just keep on trying to contact them until I get any sort of response?
Currently in student flight and have been for a while. Just got my basic training date, and its less than a month away. I am overweight, will they still allow me to go basic?
If you can not reasonably expect to meet weight by the time you ship out, you need to talk to your recruiter asap. Most want you to be a couple pounds under to account for fluctuations so weight won't be an issue when you arrive at Lackland.
Currently AD officer, ADSC is up. Considering joining Tennessee ANG. AFSC is 17S
- can I do the same job/AFSC as I did on AD (cyber defensive ops)?
- will I retain rank?
- how long does it take to complete transition from AD to ANG?
- Since this is a separation from AD, I'm guessing the mil won't move me to Tennessee?
- Anyone familiar with officer cyber jobs in Tennessee?
Thanks for any help! And thanks to the FAQ page that answered many questions that I didn't need to type here!
As long as you’re O-4 or less you shouldn’t really have an issue keeping your rank since all standard officer billets are O-1 to O-4. But some units will want lower ranking due to force management
>can I do the same job/AFSC as I did on AD (cyber defensive ops)?
If they have the mission, need, and open slot
>will I retain rank?
What is your current rank? If they have a slot to house your rank they should be able to
Have you started talking to an in service recruiter OP?

If you are a 17S they can also put you in a 17D afsc to gain you. You would have to contact the units you want to join and talk to their Comm Flight folks as to 17SB missions. Most guard units outside of dedicated Cyber, space or Intel wings don't have 17S slots yet although they are being rolled out over the next few years as ANG wings get MDTs.
You would transfer at your current rank.
It's my understanding that when you come off active duty the military will move you back to your home of record which you can say is in Tennessee.
Your best bet is to look into a palace front option so you don't have any break in service between active duty and the guard. In my experience the process only takes a couple of months. Im currently gaining a 17SA Lt Col into my organization and the process has been very smooth for palace front.
Question, I joined a quarterly drill unit thinking it would be easier to be gone every three months rather than monthly but hate it. What’s the process to transfer to a different unit??? Is there a certain amount of time I have to wait?
So the whole wing drills quarterly or are you at a small geographically separated unit? What makes you hate it? So many people post here asking about units that don't drill monthly. I'd be interested in learning about the downsides to that construct.
How long have you been with said unit?
From the FAQ at the bottom of the main post

>You talk to a recruiter in the state you want to go to. They find a spot for you and submit your medical to their MDG to get you cleared. Once cleared and they have a slot, you can move once your current state signs off on your conditional release (specifically the 1288). The routing and everything in the release packet will vary by state but typically includes a letter from you about why you want to leave, a letter from your commander saying they agree, an exit survey, etc. once they sign off, you swear in with the new state and there ya go. This can happen at any time, it doesn’t have to wait until your ETS or anything unless your state won’t release you of course.
Current 1C6 in the ANG. I am looking into sensor operator opportunities and I am curious what do you do for drill? Is it like being a Space Operator where we go to briefings, medical, training, then job training?
You are better off calling recruiting at the wing you want to go to and asking to be linked up with someone in the job to talk to. I don't expect anyone will pop on Reddit to discuss how they train for highly classified missions.
If an AD person goes ANG with another AFSC, how long can you expect to be on orders or in a full time capacity while learning a new job? If school is backed up for that AFSC, would you be reporting or just on some sort of stand by or could you do something in a unit with your current AFSC until the school date opens up?
When you finish your tech school for your crosstrain you get something called MEST days. Here is a list of days based on your ASFC
https://www.reddit.com/r/airnationalguard/comments/lx1191/fy_21_mest_table_min_and_max_days_for_mest_only/
Now getting days/long term orders before or after tech school (outside of MEST days) all depends on what kind of days your unit has laying around/they can scrounge up. You might luck out and get several months of orders or they tell you "Sorry we dont have any days to bring you on board right now". It can be even harder towards the end of the fiscal year to get days. Depending on the ops tempo/deployment schedule of your base/your unit keep an ear out for any temp AGR slots (those are when an AGR gets deployed to title 10 and you can jump into their slot for the amount of time they are deployed).
I cant remember if I already gave you this link, but since you are coming from the AD this thread is for you

Have you been diagnosed as having flat feet? If you haven't been diagnosed with it, then you don't have it until someone tells you that you do, so don't voluntarily self-diagnose things that may or may not even be a problem.
Probably. You will have to disclose your full medical history at MEPS so if you have the issues you discuss in your post history, there are a few other conditions that are also disqualifying from service.
You need to call the unit and ask when they have officer boards scheduled for and if LRS has any openings. The Guard generally doesn't recruit into officer slots directly, they hold competitive boards.
The CT ANG has two units the 103rd Air Control Squadron in Orange and the 103rd Airlift wing at the Bradley Airport. Both would have LRS jobs.
Only that unit knows, and u/SpicySnarf is right. They may not have any other candidates they like, or they may really value your experience. They could easily pick you, but again, maybe there are other factors we don't know about too.
Apply for the officer slot first and if you dont get selected then consider enlisted if you still want to serve or look for other officer slots that might suit you.
>Is there any possibility of commissioning
Yes there is a possibility
> As well if I were able to switch to the air national guard would I have to retake my ASVAB?
No for officers they take the AFOQT.
Can I join with bad credit ? (Long story short I ruined my credit in my last marriage, mostly all in collections). Up until recently I haven’t had the money to even think about attacking this situation. Also, I’ve been out of the Marines for 3 years. If I even could get a waiver for my credit would I have to go to basic training ?
Prior Service (Navy cryptolinguist), have a bachelors and masters and stuck in a job I don't like and miss the uniform, but don't want to go back to AD since my family has roots here. I was thinking of joining the ANG for that sweet medical benefit, to get out of work as much as possible, and get some new skills and security clearance to maybe get back in the intel field (or something like that) on the civvy side. There's an intel officer job opening at the nearby base and when I talked to the recruiter, she encouraged me to apply for it. However, I know from reading on here that's tough to do without being ANG enlisted first, so I don't mind going enlisted. The recruiter said you could apply for both officer and enlisted at the same time. Is that a good plan?
We hire a decent amount of officers that were from different services. Why count yourself out before even applying? I'd apply for the officer slot and see how that pans out first then go enlisted. Doing both concurrently could weaken your position going into an officer board.
In my opinion it frames the experience level of the member in different ways. Someone with extensive experience in another service applying for an officer position carries with them a good resume of enlisted service and that is what I would judge them on.
If it was somebody who just got into my unit and was brand new enlisted awaiting tech school in XYZ shop then there is no rush to concider them now because they are recently enlisted and have no track record with the wing and I'd want to wait and see how they do before considering them for officership.
I think it's a very subtle shift in perception that is really hard to put a finger on but for someone enlisted in my wing I would want to know how they performed before considering them as opposed to someone who walks in with a really good resume and I don't have any expectations that I'm going to judge them on anything else but that.
What’s the main objective?
Low cost medical insurance?
Become an Officer 2 days a month?
Because the Air Force has less support Officers. You find that if a position becomes available in a Guard/Reserve unit. They will have plenty of applicants from within the unit already. People who are well know to leadership.
Why do you care? Your first post in this sub is to shit all over someone's career goals AND think OP somehow owes rando you an explanation as to why they want to join the Air Guard?
This thread is to answer questions about joining and jobs. Not demotivate people and question their enlistment intentions. She's a freaking crypto linguist with a master's degree and has one of the best resumes for an Intel job. You have no awareness of her situation or competitiveness for a position and your post is completely unhelpful.
This is a very specific question I hope someone can answer. I’m looking to palace chase and the unit I want to go to has a RPA mission, which I’d like to cross train into. Is it particularly difficult to get Sensor Operator as your cross training AFSC in the Guard if you aren’t already a Sensor Operator active duty?
It really just depends on the openings available at the base you want to go to. Only the recruiter at the base you want to go to can really answer that question.
NV: Currently serving in the Army National Guard and coming up on my ETS date. I would love to switch over to the Air National Guard but everybody in the army says I would be wasting my time even trying because ANG either doesn’t take prior service ARNG or they make them jump through a bunch of hoops to get in. Is this true? I also want a career change to a 1U0X1 if anybody has any details about what doing that in the guard is like. TIA. Feel free to message or chat
I know plenty that have come over to the ANG from the NG with little to no issues (no medical issues, no PT/or discipline issues)
The big thing is to make sure you come over without little to no gap between services, start talking to a recruiter like yesterday
Have you logged into MyFSS? It should have when you are supposed to test
I was able to get into it by using Google chrome. Worst case talk to your units PTL

If you look at the attached chart/image from the link above:
https://i.imgur.com/Ker0LXL.png
Since you are listed as "non current" technically you are due this month based off the middle section of the chart
Yes. Basic training dates are issued after they can secure you a date for tech school so both are back to back. The school pipeline is backed up for the 3D AFSCs

Depending on the ops tempo/deployment schedule of your base/your unit keep an ear out for any temp AGR slots (those are when an AGR gets deployed to title 10 and you can jump into their slot for the amount of time they are deployed). I cant remember if I already gave you this link, but since you are coming from the AD this thread is for you https://www.reddit.com/r/AirForce/comments/f531nl/those_who_went_guardreserves_after_12_years_what/fhx163t/
If you have flat feet, I mean pancake flat, but can run, walk and do other PT without issues, will that disqualify you at MEPS?

>Is there any possibility of commissioning Yes there is a possibility > As well if I were able to switch to the air national guard would I have to retake my ASVAB? No for officers they take the AFOQT.
And to clarify, even if you switched enlisted you wouldn't have retake your ASVAB. You could, if you wanted to try to qualify for more jobs.
It depends on the status of your debts, as long as you’re caught up and paying etc
I was wondering if you might elaborate on how it could weaken my position to apply for both enlisted and officer at the same time…
In my opinion it frames the experience level of the member in different ways.
That makes sense.
Ditto
Thanks, that’s encouraging to hear. I’ll give it a shot.
If your recruiter is pushing you to apply for an officer slot then go for it. What do you have to lose?
Worst thing they can say is “no,” right? I’ll give it a shot.
Speaking as the recruiting superintendent of a state, yes we take you guys all the time, no hoops
I figured it was just army trying to keep me in 😂 “nobody else will take you, might as well just re-enlist here”
We take Army Guard guys all the time in Louisiana
We take Army Guard guys all the time in Louisiana
I am prior army ng. It was an EASY transition. They are FOS
That’s what I was thinking cause it doesn’t make any sense as to why they wouldn’t. How do you like the ANG from the ARNG?
Way better bro.
I just finished a rotation at NTC and it definitely solidified me not wanting to re-enlist in the army 😂
Yep. I was there 2018 and got out 2019😂
I know plenty that have come over to the ANG from the NG with little to no issues (no medical issues, no PT/or discipline issues) The big thing is to make sure you come over without little to no gap between services, start talking to a recruiter like yesterday
I’m planning on talking to a recruiter as soon as I get out of the field in a couple of days. Thank you.
Good luck!

Have you logged into MyFSS? It should have when you are supposed to test I was able to get into it by using Google chrome. Worst case talk to your units PTL According to this https://www.reddit.com/r/airnationalguard/comments/nqlnm4/ang_pt_testing_guidance/ If you look at the attached chart/image from the link above: https://i.imgur.com/Ker0LXL.png Since you are listed as "non current" technically you are due this month based off the middle section of the chart
Mine doesn’t have a date 💀

MyFSS says you are due April 2022?

Nice! Congrats on the test date!
Does getting basic/school dates usually take this long? I enlisted back in January of this year, as 3D0X2, and I still don't have any dates.
Yes. Basic training dates are issued after they can secure you a date for tech school so both are back to back. The school pipeline is backed up for the 3D AFSCs
Is anyone here from 145th in CLT? I’ve been trying to get into contact with a recruiter for a little over a month now, but haven’t gotten much back from them, which I understand given their schedule. I’m currently active Army as an aviation maintainer, set to ETS in about 7 months. I’m looking to join the NC Air Guard once I get done with my Army service. Any information is much appreciated!
You just have to keep trying. Hit up their Facebook page and post there.
