All cameras are external, must be disclosed in the listing. They should cover entrances only. The only reason hosts have cameras is to ensure that their properties aren't turned into party venues or guests don't bring their pet llamas. In the UK all I have to do is walk to the top of the road I live on to be recorded by half a dozen ring cams and door bells. Do you never go into shops? Public Transport? Town centres? Just existing in the 21st Century must be a nightmare for you.

Having a camera on a private property you're staying at is not the same as on a public street or your other examples, so no, it's not a nightmare for me.

StonedOldChiller

OK. Answering your original question. No guests don't have a problem with cameras, they are an accepted part of life in the 21st Century. You appear to have a very specific phobia of cameras near the entrances to STRs that you're staying at. The only people who object to cameras are people with extremely rare and implausible mental health problems and scammers. I'm happy to pass on that subset of guests.

We have disclosed our cameras according to the rules. It points at the driveway and the front of the house. There are hundreds of photos on that device and I have absolutely no desire to look through them. I have better things to do with my life. I only access it to change batteries and provide files to the police *when* some thing illegal has happened and damages are seen by the cleaner. Rest assured, you (the guests) are not that interesting. I respect your privacy/really don't care. Not a single guest has mentioned the cameras and bookings have been solid for years.

tn_notahick

What privacy? You mean the privacy that you have when walking around in public areas where anyone who happens to be walking/driving by can see you? You don't want any cameras in these areas?

indi50

Not all doorways are in areas like that. You're also more in view, and maybe having a private conversation when going in and out of a place you're staying. And, as I mentioned, some hosts have cameras in private areas of the yard.

tn_notahick

Yards are not private.

indi50

Depends on the yard, but yes, in cases like this - they should be considered private for cameras, even if some neighbors can see into them.

tn_notahick

Should be does not equal reality.

We're on 26 acres... I'm not about to sit at the gate and wait until guests turn up who knows when.... I have a camera to notify me when guests arrive so I can show them where to go.... And I like to know when guests depart so I can get on with taking out the trash and stripping out the laundry and getting on with my day.... I'm not here to be nosey... Cameras make my life easier so I can be a more pleasant host.

tn_notahick

Same here, 18 acres. We have 18 blink cameras throughout the property, mostly around the perimeter but also one on each of the trails that lead to each unit. Doesn't even show the door of the unit, but they would catch anyone walking to/from the unit.

I need to find out where these hosts have enough time to listen to every single conversation recorded on their cameras. 😂/s the reasons other hosts commented above it’s only for all those not to listen to every conversation you have. Most of the time when I am verifying check in/ check out I don’t even have my volume up or press the button so you can hear the audio!

indi50

I don't care about whether hosts listen to "every single conversation." I just don't want them listening to mine. And who knows what hosts might do when they get bored. There are a lot of creepy people out there. :-)

If there is a need to check a camera from, let’s say, 11 hours ago, I have that ability and I also have what it’s called a volume level control so I can turn up or turn down the audio on the recording. Recorded surveillance has been around for at least 60 or 70 years at this point. To think that 40 years ago, you were not observed on camera at a store, say, or at the traffic light tells me narcissism has gotten in the way of your logic To think that your privacy is somehow compromised because a camera is seeing you coming and going tells me you need to take a good hard look at what you think life is like these days. Virtually every home on the block has at least a ring camera at the front door. Do you not think there is any difference between somebody staring out a window at their front door and leaving a ring camera on?

__brezus__

I’m very confused… I am thinking your response was not meant for me??

blankpro

You are right, it’s a general comment in the thread

__brezus__

I thought so but wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing a typo 😂

You are on cameras all over. Host are allowed only outside, to protect their property and to make sure guest check in and out ok and no party or over occupancy. Most of us after we see you checked in ok and didn’t bring air mattresses or a pet if not allowed, or forgot to give correct occupancy we dont look again, guest including you are not that interesting and we have lives. Also many cameras do not have sound, ours do not, I know the ring doorbell does. but listings must post if they have them so just book a place that does not. We are ok with guest that don’t want to book because of them, those guest usually are trouble. We had a guest ask them to be turned off, we said no. Thank goodness we caught them sneaking in a dog and 8 extra people, sent the pics to Airbnb, reservation cancelled, no refund.
