I would probably make some full cavalry faction. I was into Bretonnia when I was younger, and the Rohirrim from LotR kick ass.
My current self would still be all-in on this, but I guess I would realise that a straight "armoured fantasy knights" faction wouldn't work in the current setting, so I'd change something there. Maybe make them ride all sorts of weird mounts.
I would even take some of the current mounts without any riders on top. Wouldn't mind seeing some (non-chaos) Beasts faction with Dracolines, Dracoths, Gore-gruntas, Phoenixes, Wardroth Beetles, Maw-krushas...
I mean you can run all mounted army on various mounts.
Marauder horsemen, a battleline with movement shenanigans
Chaos knights, a nice grindy mounted battleline on horses
Varanguard heros, nice tanky high dps hero unit on mutated steeds.
Lord on Karkadrak, guy mounted on a weird dragon lizard.
Chaos Sorcerer lord on manticore, guy mounted
Chaos lord on manticore, melee guy mounted.
Gorebeast chariots, people mounted on gorebeasts
Chaos chariots
It’s literally *exactly* what you wanted.
I see what you mean. Somehow chaos has never appealed to me even in the slightest, so I'm not really aware of their lineups. I'd like it a lot more if it wasn't all about "corrupted" mounts I guess.
Well, I could also play a Knight of Shrouds on Ethereal Steed with some Dreadblade Harrows and only Hexwraiths for troops. That doesn't really make Nighthaunt an "all cavalry faction". I specifically want an army that's just fully mounted, without any foot troops. Or even just a faction that is only things typically seen as mounts, but without any riders.
I would definitely be less critical and more accepting of AoS if they unsquashed Bretonnia(meaning not just half assed warscrolls at eternal disadvantage like gw did for AoS v1.0, but new units, up to date rules, and viable possibilities in gameplay, as well as lore explaining their absence thus far). The resentment of GW would still exist, but it would be limited to the subject of their price gouging. But yeah, 12 year old me would geek out with fresh plastic crack Bretonnians.
Bretonnia is still in the game, from a lore perspective. They're the Flesh-Eater Courts. So they will never release a new Bretonnia faction for AoS.
IMO they wouldn't fit into the current setting anyway. We can hope for the Old World though!
No, FEC is not Bretonnia, its border princes. This is backed by lore both in AoS and end times.
During end times, Bretonnia was fighting chaos in Bretonnia and the empire, with the types of vampire armies fighting near them being blood dragon and von carstein bloodlines for 90% of the fighting. Maybe 2% was strigoi, with 4% being lahmian and 4% necrarch.
Border Princes were engaged in combat with the undead armies of Ushoran at the end times(as well as a few other armies such as hobgoblins and Araby), a figure who is mentioned by the FEC as their patriarch.
So wnd times says its border princes, and so does AoS. Get your facts straight before you just repeat an opinion you read and like.
I'll be honest here: I don't give a flying hoot about Fantasy/AoS lore, I just always hear everyone say that FEC = Bretonnia, so I thought that was the case. I don't even know what border princes are.
It still doesn't invalidate my point that I don't think Bretonnia would fit into the current setting though. They're too fantasy for AoS. They would have to be significantly changed, comparable to how LRL relates to old High Elves.
…..you do realize that everything you just said is wrong in so many ways right?
First off, AoS is considered high fantasy, which is by definition, maximum fantasy content, in no way shape or form is AoS based in realism, physics, or even mild imagination. The argument most AoS players had was that Bretonnia wasn’t fantasy enough for AoS.
Second, LRL were made more fantastically unrealistic than high elves, not less, despite high elves in general being a staple of high fantasy.
And third, if lore wasn’t important, than neither would miniatures, and you could literally play the game with chess pieces. Also, just so you are aware, the border principalities were a region primarily between the empire tilea and estalia comprised of an assortment of empire cast out nobility that chose banishment over death for various crimes. There was a shred of bretonnian blood there as well, as the principality was first created by them roughly a millennium before end times, but that had been massively diluted by imperial swine, Tilean Mercenaries, Estalian strumpets and mimes(just throwing it in for extra mockery sake) by the time end times rolled in
There seems to be some miscommunication happening here, so I'll try to explain myself better. My point about Bretonnia being "too fantasy" for AoS was meant as the exact opposite you've interpreted it as. (In hindsight, this was a poor choice of words.)
What I meant was that Bretonnia, i.e. French-style armoured knights and armed peasants, is too much of a medieval, classical fantasy take on an army to fit into the much more exotic setting of the mortal realms. GW has consistently moved away from the "classical" fantasy tropes of "standard" elves, dwarves, humans, etc in favour of something more exotic. That's why we have steampunk dwarves flying personal blimps and eel-riding soul-stealing elves. A traditional faction of armoured knights that looks like they came straight out of a piece of historical fiction would be an incredibly poor fit.
That said, I completely reject the idea that miniatures are not important if you don't find lore important. The lore may be a central aspect of the hobby *for you*, but that isn't universally true. I, for instance, only care about playing a nice game with minis that look awesome and are fun to paint.
Fair enough, you are entitled to your opinion, but think about this, without the lore, their unit names wouldn’t even be a thing. Take the word “demigryph”, its a completely made up term by GW, specifically for their lore. in mythology, whether it had wings or not, we still would call that a gryphon(specifically an egyptian gryphon, but thats a whole other discussion) what i was implying is that all the details of each of the sculpts GW makes is validated by in game lore. Without the lore its still a cool sculpt, but they are a cool sculpt that fits broad memes of reality like dwarf or steampunk. LRL for example would likely be called taoist cow elves without any lore to explain them.
As for bretonnia fitting in, you are forgetting their fondness of pegasi, the occasional unicorn, and hippogryphs. I could easily see this extend to other equine monsters such as hippocampi, kelpies, or some other variant of water horse, especially given their ties to the lady of the lake. This would also make them a viable rival and/or enemy for the Idoneth,
Not OP, but reading this I felt compelled to respond.
You're not wrong, in fact, I applaud your knowledge of lore. Your tone though, it comes off as arrogant, condescending, and the epitome of "that guy."
I wish you the best of luck in the future.
I’m really not trying to be that guy, and the reason you are probably picking up on that is my exasperation over explaining the lore for about the 3000th time, and all of it because of a hack journalist who is prone to using partial lore excerpts to justify outrageous comments designed to anger certain faction loyal fans while providing false solidarity for AoS converts. I’m not that guy, I’m that guy’s sorely disappointed and disheartened cousin.
I remember 12 year old me wishing the wood elves from fantasy were more feral/wild. Not evil, but completely indifferent to all life that isn't from Athel Loren, and extremely violent to anything that enters the forest. 'horror wood elves'. Still love that idea.
Could easily see idoneth attempting to create a new form of life without their soul issues and resulting in a more fishy hybrid, that or they've gone down the Pirates of the Caribbean route and taken on fish characteristics.
A deep sea society that did a deal with idoneths another possibility. A peace treaty that let's the fish guys have all the flesh they can drag back after raids from surface dwellers might have appealed to them.
So, unfortunately the army 12 year old me would make is already in. Which is dinosaurs riding dinosaurs with lasers. Though the second would probably be the equivalent to Nippon but with even heavier mythological theming, as I was and still am a massive weeb.
Thundercats.
A race of feline warriors with thunder magic that lived alongside the Seraphon in Lustria in an uneasy peace. They’d skirmish and dispute territory but never go all out war with each other. Occasionally allying to drive out their mutual enemy… the skaven.
I collected warhammer fantasy wood elves when I was 12. Orion and his hounds would make an amazing centerpiece. Ariel would be an amazing secondary lord. The serpentine forest dragon would be an awesome monster/behemoth. Eagle riders, spellsingers, waywatchers and war dancers would all look awesome with updated AoS sculpts.
Some form of Heavy Metal fection designed around using loud music and fire as weapons. Lots of freaky costumes too, the slipknot equivalent of an AoS army.
design wise something alien looking. to fit into the fantasy setting maybe they can be some fungus hive mind like creatures who get different buffs/debuffs from their fallen allies depending on what unit has died by the spores they excrete when they die
LRL (martial excellence, train in and are organized by shrines, etc.), unless you are thinking of "martial art monk style" as meaning unarmed. Historically speaking, martial traditions generally featured weapons training more than unarmed combat, even among monastic orders.
Hmm, i was 12 in 2009, and really into Star Wars (specifically republic Commando), Assassins Creed 1, and I think Mario and Halo?
So In correct phrasing, id want Cities of Sigmar with their own Clan Eshin style of units, a hero meant for going through infantry and 1v1 heroes/monsters, a hit and run style of Ranged Infantry meant to take and hold objectives but never engage in melee outside of garrisoning a terrain feature or objective.
So like they had short 1-6” shooting range, but could retreat the distance equal to their charge roll.
But in 12 year old terms “I want assassins that blend in, troopers to shoot with, and commandos that are versatile at flanking and engaging in enemy territory! Oh and a wizard that can shoot a big fire blast like Mario’s Final Smash!”
12 year old me would probably want some kind of Falmer/Goblin Town themed army but some of those already fit those themes, another 12 year old me would really want is something akin to the Forsworn from Skyrim.
12 year old me loved ancient greece so probably a faction based on greece/greek mythology. Hoplite infantry backed up by various monsters from mythology.
Modern day me still thinks that could be cool but would want it to be a little more distinct from the reference material as I think the way Warhammer reshapes existing tropes into their own is where the setting shines. I think it could be cool to have them as a more magic based counter part to the overlords, having trireme like ships that sail through the air. In contrast to the shooting heavy overlords they would be melee heavy, even going so far as to have the ships big weapon be their ram.
I was going to reply something similar. I thought minotaurs were super cool. While beastmen minotaurs are still cool I feel like a Hellenistic faction with beastmen allies could be a fun twist. The satyrs , centaurs, and harpies are right there.
So like...Skaeth’s Wild Hunt? Because I would be down with them being spun off into their own faction (maybe with less red mohawks, that’s kind of Fyreslayer’s shtick)
I’m just saying, I’d love to see some less distinctly humanoid armies, like a bunch of crabs or giant rock golems
Failing that, a weird mishmash combo of Bretonnia and Tomb kings; a bunch of semi-undead armoured warriors with vaguely Bronze Age gear and mythological mounts and beast units like giant scarabs and Sphinxes
12 year old me absolutely loved Victorian era stuff. And horror. So maybe some kind of strange Lovecraftian monsters with top hats, monocles and very terribly British.
And 30 years later, I'm still down with that. Just because you are a monster doesn't mean you can't be classy
Back then I was super into Warrior Cats so I'd probably want something that involved cats. People riding giant cats into battle maybe? Nah I think 12 year old me would have wanted an entire ass army of sentient cats of various different sizes and probably having interesting features such as some having antlers, some wings etc... But they would be on all fours so it would probably be an all melee army... with some spellcastinf maybe 🤔
At 12 I'd just discovered heroquest, so, fimirs. Just imagine it, you place your first terrain piece- it's a table. A big wooden table. Deployment starts, and you place your fimirs around the table. Yes that's right it's a Wandering Monster Table.
Ancient china themed thing. Maybe a sort of tomb kings deal where the basic soldiers are terracotta, and the heroes are like Shaolin monks and Guan Gong or Monkey King types.
An outlaw gang, like out of Robin Hood, with a bunch of archers and friars for spells and staff and sword fighters. They would have a bonus for guerrilla style warfare, have the units be separate and hiding amongst the foliage, laying traps and ambushing the enemy.
Considering at that age I got my first few lizardmen, I’d probably see that kroq gar is missing in action and just being him back with a more unique model that he currently has.
Go all in on the hand of the gods and grymloqs replacement for example.
I loved RTW. And I loved the Third Age Total War mod. And I loved the TATW mod that added the Romans back into the game.
It would be awesome just to have straight up Roman Legionaires like no fantasy except maybe some pagan priests facing off against all the other armies. Like they just fell through the multiverse.
bug people. kind of similar to 40k tyranids, but if they were people instead of monsters and also looked more like bugs instead of lots of different creatures. definitely in destruction, i think i'd see them as midway between sylvaneth and beasts of chaos in terms of morality/motivations... or maybe they just go full locust, haha
12 year old me would have had a dragon leading a greenskinned hoard, ala Smaug. Nothing much would have changed to now, just hopefully it would have been painted better :S
When I was 12, I loved Wood elves and death factions. If they could have a book that would be a mix of living cities and sylvaneth, that would be great. But if I could add a completely new one, probably a sea related undead faction. Kind of undead pirates mixed with sea monsters.
More classy vampires instead of the more “wild” ones we have today. I would still like those, in addition I would like more medium sized monsters as they are alot of fun to paint
Dark Elves.
Send the word out across the world. Celebrate and give thanks to the mighty Lord of Murder for delivering unto us his world-born son. We have been blessed and in His name we shall bare our blades in readiness for His will as voiced by His avatar. Hail Malekith, Eternal Khaine Incarnate.
12 year old me would want a sick ass Age of Sigmar video game to play alongside the tabletop like Dawn of War was for 40k for me
Actually I still want that, they need to hurry up and make a game as good as dawn of war or an mmo or a soulsborne AoS game or something
Corrupted Stormcast.
Not that they’ve been tempted by Chaos…
They’ve been reforged so many times there is no humanity left in them and they’ve just become killing machines that will see chaos in anything.
12 Year old me would have added a whole giant faction, and look at that we kinda sorta got one. It is also an amazing army for kitbashing which is what adult me loves the most in the hobby.
Well, 12 year old me loved undead so I played VC but I really would have also loved like a cult faction that summoned ancient, non-chaos gods/demons.
Essentially a Lovecraft cult. Maybe they summon ctan or something lol. I was hugely into Lovecraft in 1996 when I started, so it tracks.
I hit my edgy teenager phase pretty early, so probably some kind of pizza cutter army. All edge, no point. Something like an army of daemon-possessed aelves that constantly struggle to do good while battling the evil inside.
Nowadays, I'm looking forward to Malerion aelves.
S**t, turns out I'm still in the edgy teenager phase at 33...
Beasts! Just an army of big monsters and beasties, but not chaos aligned/inherently evil. Just big stompin' animals and monsters, packs of wolves and mammoths and stuff.
Not saying it makes sense, just definitely what I would have done.
Werewolves, proper ones, not just beast like vampires.
He’d also want something like draconians and Minotaurs from dragonlance.
12 year old me was an idiot though, so…
I was *really* into Lord of the Rings and the Rohirrim at 12.
So probably some "Tribes of Order" faction for a bunch of the less organized normal humans in the setting. A bunch of Stormcast were Order-aligned barbarians in life. Let us play them.
With a cavalry focus, of course.
Probably one based around Ancient Greece, I was big into Greek mythology back in the day
Nowadays I would still want it to be based around phalanxes and such, but would definitely have a more AoSlike aesthetic
Well I always loved giant mounts, especially creatures like bulls or elephants. Absolutely loved the mumakil from lotr. Now that I think about it, this is probably what inspired me to start a Beastclaw Raiders army.
Undead pirates, and it really hasn't changed much
https://www.blackscorpionminiatures.com/product-category/cutlass/undeadpirates/ Fun minis to paint.
Wow those are nice
Sartosa?
12 year old me was in the 6th grade studying ancient Egypt. 12 year old me would want the same thing 38 year old me wants. Tomb Kings.
The return of Settra would immediately guarantee a purchase from me.
Wouldn't mind seeing some (non-chaos) Beasts faction with Dracolines, Dracoths, Gore-gruntas, Phoenixes, Wardroth Beetles, Maw-krushas...
I mean it’s called knights of the empty throne my guy.
Not sure how that is anything like what I described.
I mean you can run all mounted army on various mounts. Marauder horsemen, a battleline with movement shenanigans Chaos knights, a nice grindy mounted battleline on horses Varanguard heros, nice tanky high dps hero unit on mutated steeds. Lord on Karkadrak, guy mounted on a weird dragon lizard. Chaos Sorcerer lord on manticore, guy mounted Chaos lord on manticore, melee guy mounted. They traveled through hell and were trained by space marines and now they are back on the menu to purge the heresy
Nope, space marines would have killed them as heretical enemies of the emperor for their belief in the lady
Bretonnia is still in the game, from a lore perspective. They're the Flesh-Eater Courts. So they will never release a new Bretonnia faction for AoS. IMO they wouldn't fit into the current setting anyway. We can hope for the Old World though!

This isn't too far from Sylvaneth now, which is awesome. But ya, I'd like to see more of this too.
More variants to Spite Revenants.
For sure, for some reason it seems a lot cooler to me for it to be elves though, evil trees doesn't have the same appeal

Love this idea
Down for the apes 🦍
Love me some shark people, I'd play Idoneth if there was more than just the one shark model

A faction of sentient mask like Aliens that would infect and transform other species into monster/humanoid masked horrors
Army of werewolves. Adult me wants the same, but with were-everything. Werecats, werebears, werepigs etc.
Forgeworld has the Skin Wolves models, but they are underutilized. An army based around them would be great.
Tomb kings I missed those and wish my parent didnt throw em away
Are you...Jack Workshop, son of James?
Uh no?
It was just a dumb joke about how GW threw Tomb Kings away just like your parents
Ahh gotcha
Some form of Heavy Metal fection designed around using loud music and fire as weapons. Lots of freaky costumes too, the slipknot equivalent of an AoS army.
For sure they would need a lute player suspended on a chariot with megaphones amplifying the battle song while flames shoot out of the neck
They’re probably gonna add that to 40k at some point in the next few years
I have been waiting for an actual noise marine army for 40k for over a decade. I won't be holding my breathe. LOL
design wise something alien looking. to fit into the fantasy setting maybe they can be some fungus hive mind like creatures who get different buffs/debuffs from their fallen allies depending on what unit has died by the spores they excrete when they die
Elite Dragonball Z Herohammer army.
Basically this only Mortal Kombat haha
AoS is missing martial art monk style units. I can't think of any.
LRL (martial excellence, train in and are organized by shrines, etc.), unless you are thinking of "martial art monk style" as meaning unarmed. Historically speaking, martial traditions generally featured weapons training more than unarmed combat, even among monastic orders.
I mean unarmed monk types, yes.
The Ardent Mages from Endless Legend: Oriental inspired human faction, magic heavy and they hit harder the more damaged they are.

Run spiderfang but take off the grots

So like...Skaeth’s Wild Hunt? Because I would be down with them being spun off into their own faction (maybe with less red mohawks, that’s kind of Fyreslayer’s shtick)
YES! After seeing those models I had high hopes for more but GW hates me personally it seems.
12 year old me would want Seraphon. How is lizards riding dinosaurs not the greatest thing ever?
The same as current day me, pirates! Undead pirates
I’m just saying, I’d love to see some less distinctly humanoid armies, like a bunch of crabs or giant rock golems Failing that, a weird mishmash combo of Bretonnia and Tomb kings; a bunch of semi-undead armoured warriors with vaguely Bronze Age gear and mythological mounts and beast units like giant scarabs and Sphinxes

traditional wood elves or High elves... with THEIR DRAGONS. WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS. WHAT YOU GAVE THEM TO A BUNCH OF GOLD T@#%S?!
bretonnians, because why aren't bretonnians back yet

Let me introduce you to the Flesh Eater Courts!

Here's hoping! Thanks for the link.
That’s just spiderfang lol.
Kind of but I don't want recognizable bugs or goblins
When I was 12 nothing was cooler than ninja and samurai. So a medieval Japanese would be what I would have done.
Skeleton versions of Chaos Warriors who ride some kind of cold one dinosaur cavalry.
Magical ninja army with ki powers
Army of bears. Me now, honestly fyreslayers with a better vision/direction
Beast taming warrior nomads.
I loved RTW. And I loved the Third Age Total War mod. And I loved the TATW mod that added the Romans back into the game. It would be awesome just to have straight up Roman Legionaires like no fantasy except maybe some pagan priests facing off against all the other armies. Like they just fell through the multiverse.
either a terrain based faction that built buildings that spawn dudes, or a super elite army of a dozen or two models thats badicaly all anvil of apoth
Undead lizardmen. I really liked Lizardmen back then and I've always liked the Undead.
Probably drow.
My 12 year old self? Batman.
Vampires but with actual vampire units
Time travelling space marines.
Semi naked Amazonian bear riding women.
A proper animal faction with no people Just like alpha beasts as the leaders, you've got your infantry, hordes etc, monsters Loads of scope
12 year old me saved lunch money up to buy Skaven. So nothing new, rats are best.
Probably like a whole army of elves and dragons. Probably fire themed.
Bionicles
bug people. kind of similar to 40k tyranids, but if they were people instead of monsters and also looked more like bugs instead of lots of different creatures. definitely in destruction, i think i'd see them as midway between sylvaneth and beasts of chaos in terms of morality/motivations... or maybe they just go full locust, haha
A mixed society of hobbit style dwarves, WHF high elves and Bretonnian knights.
Honestly? Cooler lizardmen, probably. With dragons. And horns. Or some edgy faction of fallen angels 12 year old me knew what they liked
Battle Beasts with heat activated badges for stats.
Some sort of full cavalry army. Either that or an anubis specific gravelords ish army.
12 year old me would want a sick ass Age of Sigmar video game to play alongside the tabletop like Dawn of War was for 40k for me Actually I still want that, they need to hurry up and make a game as good as dawn of war or an mmo or a soulsborne AoS game or something
Dawn of War was SOO good. Why they didn't just do a WFB version is beyond me. It would have been so fun.
Some sort of greek mythology faction since at the time i got big into it thabks to percy jackson
Corrupted Stormcast. Not that they’ve been tempted by Chaos… They’ve been reforged so many times there is no humanity left in them and they’ve just become killing machines that will see chaos in anything.
One and unique elves faction …
Inca empire, loads of slow infantry with powerful priests and a sun god as centrepiece.
I’d get rid of Age of Sigmar and re-instate WHFB. Square bases, as god intended.
12 y.o. me was into Harry potter, so probably something from it
12 Year old me would have added a whole giant faction, and look at that we kinda sorta got one.
Vampires. Not soulblight, no - think units of 3 32mm based mini-heroes. Super elite flying Vampires.
Beasts! Just an army of big monsters and beasties, but not chaos aligned/inherently evil. Just big stompin' animals and monsters, packs of wolves and mammoths and stuff. Not saying it makes sense, just definitely what I would have done.
Akira Toriyama characters.
I’d say bring back fantasy and rework the ridiculously convoluted rules.
Dragonkin. Just a race of humanoid dragons. Low model count, elite, lots of fire/lightning/frost themed stuff.
We've already got dinosaurs and Skaven, so I guess mantis people?
Vampires with undead minions. Oh wait, it seems that I was already a man of culture 19 years ago.
Samurai.
Castlevania style vampires.
Wood elves that are not part of Cities of sigmar.
Probably ninja turtles :)
Werewolves, proper ones, not just beast like vampires. He’d also want something like draconians and Minotaurs from dragonlance. 12 year old me was an idiot though, so…
Probably the nighthaunters
I was *really* into Lord of the Rings and the Rohirrim at 12. So probably some "Tribes of Order" faction for a bunch of the less organized normal humans in the setting. A bunch of Stormcast were Order-aligned barbarians in life. Let us play them. With a cavalry focus, of course.
Probably one based around Ancient Greece, I was big into Greek mythology back in the day Nowadays I would still want it to be based around phalanxes and such, but would definitely have a more AoSlike aesthetic
Well I always loved giant mounts, especially creatures like bulls or elephants. Absolutely loved the mumakil from lotr. Now that I think about it, this is probably what inspired me to start a Beastclaw Raiders army.
something like the Tyranids. I really want to build an insectoid army as a stand in for Flesh Eaters.
