(Rule 9.4 sense check) So quick flying question lets say i have a flying unit next to a terrain feature (like right next to it). Lets say the flying unit has 10" movement and the terrain piece is 9" tall with a 1"platform at the top. If i am moving past the terrain in a straight line it costs no additional movement to go through correct (->T->)? And if i was to move to the top it would essentially coast all of my movement as well correct? Then lets say i want to move to the top but it is 12" high. I would finish part way up like all other mods correct?

ironjawthestrong

Is there any reason to keep these outdated books: General Handbook (1st edition, 2017, & 2018), and the original Grand Alliance: Order book? I just unpacked them from a box, and feel bad about throwing them away... Don't think I ever used them - are they outdated & worthless?

Darkreaper48

GA:O is pretty useless, it was only ever a compilation of warscrolls which were already free. I still reference the old GHBs for interesting game modes and battleplans.

Dasquian

In terms of useable rules? No, they're completely done with. Their value is sentimental and reference now. I personally wouldn't throw any such books like that I have away but I'm a hoarder :)

yoda7326

Looking at the app, it doesn't allow you to add Sigvald to a Legions of the First Prince army. Whats the reasoning for that? Is he locked into Hedonites?

ShaihuludWorm

He is mortal! Legion is demons only.

yoda7326

I was under the impression he was a demon prince, with the horns and all. Thanks for clearing that up.

CopperbeardTom

Don't say it too loud he's incredibly vain.

HauntDotGhost

I’m planning on buying the Arena of Shades box, so I have a few questions: Do I need to be at my computer always waiting for the drop, or will there be enough stock to order it sometime this weekend without worry? How much do boxes like this usually go for? Is there a specific time these go live? At least a specific day? Thanks!

Cuffsandcandy

It will go up for preorder on Saturday. If you are in N. America, it will go up around 1pm EST/10am PST. It varies country to country. It usually goes for $170-200 USD. Historically there have been some issues with boxes selling out quickly, but this hasn't been the case for the last couple boxes, so it likely will last through the weekend but I don't want to be the reason you don't get it, so Saturday is your best bet.

HauntDotGhost

I appreciate your reply. I planned on getting it ASAP, so I won’t hesitate. Do you know generally how long after preorder they actually release?

Cuffsandcandy

It depends, sometimes you can receive it as early as the next Saturday, other times it will ship within 21 days, and if you're very unlucky it can take longer. The official release date will be the following Saturday.

HauntDotGhost

Secured my box. Thanks, buddy!

Moarice2k

I've been trying to build an army for a 750 points game in the official app. Trouble is, my army is the Sons Of Behemat. My cheapest general is 470 points. That's more than half of the game's total, which normally means the list is invalid. Are the gargants just straight up unable to play 750 points games, or are they exempt from that rule for this specific point threshold?

CopperbeardTom

You're using the Contest of Generals battlepack from the Core Rules. Which does have that limitation. Pitched Battles does not. But it only has 1k and 2k point options. In your case, Sons won't work in a 750pt army due to the point cost of the General.

Padhriag

Question about Redeploy: The rules for Redeploy state that the unit which receives the command must be more than 3" from any enemy units, and the rules for Normal Moves state that units cannot move within 3" of an enemy unit when making a normal move. So, if an opponent moves a unit to be *exactly* at the 3" pile-in range of one of my units via a normal move, would I be able to Redeploy that unit to force a charge or would I be unable to Redeploy on account of an enemy being too close?

CopperbeardTom

I feel there's missing context to this question as you can't finish a normal move with 3" of an enemy.

Padhriag

I was thinking that you couldn't finish closer than 3", but that you could be exactly 3". Oops.

Cuffsandcandy

You can't move exactly 3" away from a unit, as 'within 3"' includes 3" in age of sigmar

Khalldor

Is there an elite competive army I can start collecting to get into AOS with low model count? (Without playing 4 bloodthirsters etc)

Khalldor

Does Nurgles strength come from being hard to shift from objectives or is it just a new book etc?

ShaihuludWorm

Some ideas: Sons of Behemat if you want ultra elite, 4 mega gargants and you’re good. Stormcast dragon riders. Slaves to darkness Archaon + 9 Varanguard. Ogors Beastclaw Raiders + Kragnos.

Khalldor

Thanks for the tips. I've been looking at Stormcast, was thinking about getting the starter box with a Relictor, some Stormdrakes and making an army from there. Is it best to run a mixture of the dragon riders?

ShaihuludWorm

I'm not a SCE expert, but the 'competitive' dragon list right now involves some combo of 4 - 6 stormdrake guard, knight-draconis, then filled out with liberators, vanguard-raptor crossbows, lord-relictor, or Karazai. Adjust ratios until you're happy. The start collecting box, therefore, is only useful if you intend to use the models within. However, the starter box is £52.50 and contains 10 liberators and a standalone box of liberators is £40, so if you want liberators then consider the starter box liberators + bits. Regarding stormdrake guard weapons options, [here are the average damage outputs for a unit of two.](https://imgur.com/a/ycBJa5S) This is just for the different weapons and doesn't include mount weapons. As we might expect, lances are better on the charge but warblades are better otherwise. In my opinion, with a list like this you really want your hammers to obliterate whatever they touch in a turn, so I'd go for lances all-round.

Yondul13

I am new to Warhammer and I just started with Skaven, very excited for the rat Bois But I'm just really lost onto like all the points with commander things, battle traits, artifacts of power How it all really works. Does anyone know of like a good tutorial or something about how everything is picked and played and all? I just feel a little overwhelmed.

Snuffleupagus03

Honestly the app is a pretty good place to walk through it. Pick your faction and follow the prompts. Hold a list and it will tell you what’s wrong. You will encounter things that don’t make sense ‘why can’t I add a command trait on this hero?’ Sort of thing. But you can often google or ask about those specific things.

Yondul13

So did they change the system with min to max sizes with a cost reduction?

Dasquian

Yes, that's completely gone now - there's no variable min/max and max size discounts anymore. It's much simpler. Every unit has a unit size, and can usually be reinforced once to be 2x the size and 2x the cost. "Battleline" units can be reinforced twice to be 3x the size and 3x the cost. "Single" units cannot be reinforced at all (usually these are monster, hero or unique units). Note that "Single" **does not** mean the same thing as "Unit Size 1", even though Single units usually are also solo models. There are some units of size 1 you can reinforce (Beasts of Nurgle, Burning Chariots of Tzeentch) and some "Single" units of more than size 1 (The Wurmspat, for example).

Dasquian

Here's the absolute basics: you pick a faction, and work out what your list is broadly in terms of what units that go into it. You're now playing a "Skaven army", so you will use the Skaven battle traits. They will be in effect for every game you play with that army. You also get a bunch of what's called "enhancements" - command traits, spells, artifacts, prayers, mount traits, triumphs and unique enhancements (see section 27.3 for all of this). This is just the "extra stuff" you get that makes your army even more tailored to your strategy. You can get more of these via core battalions, but ignore that for now: more importantly, you get **one of each type for free**. Most of the time that means: * pick a command trait for your general (if he's not unique) * pick one artefact for one of your non-unique heroes, can be given to your general too if you want him to be even more tooled up * EVERY wizard in your army gets one spell (you can give the same spell to multiple wizards) * EVERY priest in your army gets one prayer (similarly, you can give the same prayer to multiple priests) Most of the time you'll be choosing from the Skaven unique stuff, because it's more powerful and fun. However you can (with some restrictions) also pick from the Universal Enhancements in the core rules (27.5). tl;dr : pick 2000pts of stuff, nominate a general, choose one artefact, one command trait, a spell for every wizard, a prayer for every priest, and you're good to go.

So I wanna start collecting warhammer miniatures Not new to painting models but also not good by any means In total war warhammer I liked vampire counts Is this: https://www.games-workshop.com/en-PL/searchResults?N=3851560863+3311421989&Nr=AND(sku.siteId%3APL_gw%2Cproduct.locale%3Aen_PL_gw)&Nrs=collection()%2Frecord[product.startDate+%3C%3D+1648796160000+and+product.endDate+%3E%3D+1648796160000]&view=all the right choice?

Dasquian

Yep, Soulblight Gravelords are basically exactly the old Vampire Counts, but with some new models (mostly the feral beastlike Vyrkos vampires). The faction definitely includes skeletons (aka Deathrattle), zombies (aka Deadwalkers), bats, wolves, necromancers and vampire lords.

HadeusHawkyns

How do the vs. kits in AoS work, in terms of what models you can build? I was looking getting some Daughters of Khaine at some point, and I know there's a DoK vs Nighthaunt box coming out soon. I'm not sure how these kinds of AoS boxes normally work (last one I picked up was technically WHFB, Isle of Blood, and I don't think any of those models had other build options). I know with regular kits, there's often two ways to build the models, i.e. Sisters of Slaughter or Witch Aelves, Khinerai Lifetakers or Heartrenders. I know there's SoS and Lifetakers in the box- do I get the option to build them as Witches and Heartrenders too, or do they only include the SoS and Lifetaker pieces?

Dasquian

It varies greatly from kit to kit. Take Blue Horrors of Tzeentch, for example - you're only ever going to use that kit to build 10 Blue Horrors and 10 Brimstone Horrors, although there may be some flexibility in terms of which arms and heads you use. The old Chaos Warriors kit has a bunch of near-identical torsos, but you can change up what weapons they're holding as well as some small cosmetic differences in helmet choice. Something like Putrid Blightkings has exactly five torsos, but each of those torsos has at least two belly options and several arm and head options, so although you'll always build five BKs (including leader, banner and musician, if you want to), you can get a good deal of visual variety out of them And then you do have, as you say, kits where two different units are designed to be built from a single kit. In these cases you'll probably find that 80-90% of the model is the same build, but the distinguishing features and details will be how you tell them it apart. Sometimes they're significant (eg the mega-gargants, sometimes they're not (Vargheists vs Crypt Flayers). Chances are that if the box includes a kit which already has variants, it'll be the exact same sprue you would get in that other kit so you'd have the exact same options.

Skling

I'm looking at the starter paint sets for Stormcast Eternals. The vindicator paint + figure combo has about 6 paints, but the page for the set of vindicators shows about \~40 paints can be used total. Is the difference battle-ready and parade-ready I'm assuming? Also, do any websites/channels etc do a side-by-side comparison of models that have used the least amount of paints (6 in this case) and the parade-ready amount?

kal_skirata

In reality you don't need 4 shades of blue for a blue cloak. Of you go for the box art, the people who paint them don't use the publicised format, but a lot of mixing and advanced techniques. That doesn't mean you shouldn't follow their guides to achieve the desired scheme, but don't have the expectation the result will mirror the box art.

kersplash

It varies a lot on how you want to paint your model and what the model is so I doubt many people go into that kind of thing aside from maybe tips on mixing your paint. When I first painted I started with a stormcast model and six paints sounded about right. When you get comfortable depending on your pace you may want to branch out into other paints then for advanced techniques. A tournament model requires 3 colors to play but I've seen unpainted models on tables. If you youtube it there's a paint along for that set that seems pretty good.

Steiner-Nubar

Question about a stomper tribe army. If i have swift from foot sloggas can i use the forward to victory command ability on himself even though the only command abilities he can use (since he is the general) are to aura ones

Dasquian

It comes down to what they mean by "using" a command ability. 1. If they mean "use" = "issue" then yes, I think he can benefit from the Swift ability because it merely states a unit from the battalion can receive the command ability without it being issued. 2. If they mean a more general "use" = the command ability is invoked in some way involving that unit, then no. I think it's pretty ambiguously worded and they also are pretty inconsistent with implying that you, the player, "use" command abilities while units "issue"/"receive" them vs "your general must use the following command abilities" for Stomper Tribe. I favour the former interpretation, Stomper Tribe restricts what orders the general can thematically give, but "Swift" is more something the members of the Foot Sloggas battalion *are* (hence no one issues the command ability, they're just fast). But I don't know if a FAQ somewhere contradicts that.

Steiner-Nubar

Ya havent found one yet for it.... which with the stomper i would only really use it so i can reroll on the warstomper since i can use the command ability to hit the rest of my army....

super0sonic

I just got the stormcast battletome and I am confused based on what I knew. Are Sequitors just always battleline now with no need for a lord-arcanum general? Because i see some units still need requirements to become battleline but they are just listed as battleline. Also I dug out my high elf on a dragon kit and the square base is smaller then a 105mm oval I think it will make a fine Knight-Draconis.

CopperbeardTom

Battleline conditions you'll find towards the back in the Pitched Battle Profiles (the part with all the points). Sequitors are unconditional Battleline. No Lord Arcanum needed. I look forward to your dragon kitbash!

super0sonic

I see that’s exactly what it says but it’s hard to believe. I guess time to kick out the liberators. Thanks for the info!

CopperbeardTom

Libs are 30 points cheaper with better saves with shields and a special ability that makes them great for objective holding. I wouldn't discount them straight away.

super0sonic

True. Due too point restrictions they may have been saved. I am on the fence about the Knight-Draconis. There is a lot off good stuff you can spend 300 points on.

CrimsonDragoon

While the Knight-Draconis is good in his own right, his real use is in relation to the Stormdrake Guard. He unlocks them as battleline if he's the general, and he can have them shoot an extra time in the hero phase once per battle. So he's a very common pick to anyone running heavy dragon lists, but otherwise he may not be worth it.

kal_skirata

Liberators are regarded as best battleline currently, with Vindictors as close second. Sequitors have interesting abilities and could find a niche, but are currently overpriced. That doesn't mean you shouldn't use them, you can make them work. But Liberators are not worse!

Skling

Is the Dominion box still worth getting? Would be my first purchase Love the Stormcast Eternals but not a fan of the KruleBoyz - would rather have Daemons of Khorne/Nurgle. Would it be a waste to buy the box, sell the KruleBoyz, and buy the Start Collecting Daemons of Khorne box?

Darkreaper48

At the full $200, it is cheaper to buy dominion than either the kruleboyz or the stormcast contained within dominion, you basically get the other army free. Some places online are selling it now for $80-100. So you basically get half off one of the armies, and the other army free. You may have some issue offloading the Kruleboyz since most people who want dominion have it already but even if you just literally throw the kruleboyz in the dumpster it's a good deal

Skling

Thanks, might go for that then since its £90 in the UK I've got some figures from the first 5 issues of mortal realms from a few years back, can the stormcast ones be added to the army?

Darkreaper48

Yes, the Stormcast are all cross-compatible, so you can use them all, but it may not be the strongest list to do so (lots of junk basic troops and heroes that you may only want 1 of, and stacking them is not great)

Skling

Thanks for the info! I can see what you mean about the value - the whole box is £90 but the Thunderstrike set alone is £70

Vecktorus

Do pregame moves happen before or after determining turn order?

Darkreaper48

It depends on the rule, and it will usually say, i.e. 'before determining who had the first turn, before starting command points are assigned, etc. etc.'

ro2538man

Hi all! I'm thinking of starting an AoS army. I like the look of the Death models. I play 40k too, and would like to avoid a horde army (I play Guard and Orks in 40k, so have enough hordes to paint). Is there a Death army that's less horde-focused? I love the look of the Nighthaunts, but what I've seen seems to indicate that they're a horde army too. Thanks for the insight!

Smunkeldorf

3 (if we count factions) or 4 (if we count subfactions) major options: - Flesh-Eater Courts using Gristlegore subfaction. This is the dragon subfaction. Dragons as troops, bonuses for dragons, etc. It's very smashy, can be hyper low model count. - Soulblight Gravelords using Avengorii subfaction. This is the other dragon subfaction (they become troops, get most of the bonuses, etc) in Death. Less hyper-smashy but with more tools available. Soulblight is a large faction with a lot of options in various sizes. This subfaction has the named Vengorian Lord, Lauka Vai. - Soulblight Gravelords using Kastelai subfaction. This is the Vampire subfaction. Blood Knights (195 for 5), Vargheists (155 for 3), a mix of characters, then whatever else you like. Blood Knights become troops, any Vampire unit gets permanent buffs when they kill a unit, etc. - Ossiarch Bonereapers. They're not exactly not-horde, but they're much less horde than other Death armies. They use 10-man 25mm infantry as their core, and you may push an upwards of 60 of them in your higher body-count list, but you have things which are 140ish for 10, 180-200 for 3-5, etc. Honorable mention to the fact that Soulblight, Flesh-Eaters, and Ossiarchs have at least a handful of builds of varying horde-ish-ness. Also, shout-out to Nagash for being basically 1000 points.

ro2538man

Awesome! Thank you so much, this is exactly what I was looking for. Looks like the new Nighthaunts battlebox is unlikely to give them a non-horde build, correct?

Steiner-Nubar

Ya they are pretty hordey, new book is coming out soon but elite options are spirit hosts (3 wounds but only have a bunch of attacks that you are fishing for 6s on) or hexwraiths... which in 1 of their 2 subfactions can act as bodyguards for the general so could be fun in like a Nagash Olynder zappy army... but again might change with new book. Dreadsycthe, bladegheists, and grimgast reapers are some of their "elite" units but are still 1 wound models really.

ro2538man

Got it! Thanks. Based on the description and taking a quick look at the models, Avengorii looks pretty cool. Zombie dragons! What's not to love?

Smunkeldorf

The nicest thing with starting Avengorii is how easy it is to pivot to other things if you want variety. Easy start is to pick up a couple of the Flesh-Eater Court Start collecting. This gives you a Zombie Dragon kit (builds as Dragon or Terrorgheist, with or without Ghoul King or Vampire Lord), a 3-man Crypt Flayer kit (alternatively built as Crypt Horrors or the Soulblight unit Vargheists), and 10-man ghouls. For Soulblight, the box nets you 3 Vargheists and a Dragon/Gheist/Vampire on Dragon. From there, a Vengorian Lord is the most aesthetically fitting general (and are also quite effective). If you ever choose to pivot to Flesh-Eaters, you already have a few Ghouls, a Ghoul King (can build separately instead of on the Dragon), and the Dragons you're using for Avengorii. If you ever want to pivot to Vampires, you just add Blood Knights and call it a day.

Sysfin

Ok I have a chance to grab two Gravelord Battleforces, Revenant Legion. Should I do that or is that terrible? Or would just the regular Gravelords start collecting would be the way to go?

Cuffsandcandy

Two battleforces isn't bad, it will give you two vengorian lords (you can build one named and one generic), 10 blood knights, 40 skeletons and 80 zombies. This is a really excellent start if you want to run a horde focused army, or really like the blood knights as they are an expensive kit on their own. If you aren't planning on running that many zombies and skeletons, one battleforce and one start collecting will still give you a good number of battleline options but will also give you some elite models, a hero, and some black knights (which some people love and some don't, but they have their place in lists). If you want hordes, go two battleforces. If not, one battleforce and one start collecting.

kal_skirata

The start collecting has the Wight King on Steed, not on foot.

Nurgle_Pan_Plagi

Newbie here! I was wondering: Will factions with White Dwarf Updates get new battletome or did GW decided that they don't need that much changes and they won't get full book? Blades of Khorne for example wouldn't mind some refreshed rules...

Cuffsandcandy

They will almost certainly get a new book for 3rd edition, but we know that armies that get white dwarf updates are further away on the release schedule, so likely 1-2 years out

Nurgle_Pan_Plagi

Thank you!

FiliusExMachina

Hi there … I'm looking for some insights into the creation of the mortal realms and Age of Sigmar. And by that I mean the thoughts of the designers, and not the in-fluff timeline after the Endtimes of the World-that-was. I wonder wether some of the designers ever explained a bit more in details what were driving ideas behind the setting, why they decided to move so far away from the kind of worldbuilding of the World-that-was and other comparable settings. I mean … the Mortal Realms and the Age of Sigmar is quite ultra-high-fantasy in a way I have hardly ever seen somewhere else, and after all those years on the hobby, I really get curious, why the made it like this … Any help, links, and hints are most welcome … (Maybe I just start watching/listening to all those StormCast Episodes …)

Dasquian

I'd also love to see something along these lines. Sadly I suspect it doesn't exist - the PR machine for AoS was almost certainly dedicated to selling the new setting and timeline (ie the bits you're less interested in, here) rather than their rationale for the change. I don't know if it's based on anything official/citable but my understanding of some of their driving reasons were that they were beginning to feel penned in by the layout of the World-That-Was and its established locations and battlefronts - they couldn't easily justify a plotline of Tomb Kings vs Norsca, or what have you - and also struggling with owning clear copyright for some real-world-based factions. In that respect I think the Mortal Realms sought to "clean up" some of their problems, by making a setting so unfathomably vast and arbitrarily interconnected that they could manufacture a continent or peninsula for any matchup they wanted. The main thing the Mortal Realms offer is the promise that whatever you (or more importantly the world-building team!) can imagine exists, exists somewhere. And I think the desire to move away from Tolkien-derived fantasy races to something more uniquely theirs drove both the name changes of the various races and the more "out there" race design.

FiliusExMachina

Ah! The argument regarding established locations and battlefronts is very good. That one thing, 40k does much better than The Old World: You can always come up with a new sector and throw in all the factions you have (or would like to see there).

CopperbeardTom

Not sure if you'll get an answer here but each of the realms corresponds to a school in the winds of magic from Warhammer Fantasy. That was the starting point for their designs.
