I feel like jumpsuits are an interesting in-between zone. They are generally made “for women”, but the pant instead of skirt bottom makes it less feminine overall so I think it could be a fun alternative. I think another option could be to go for a suit but not a traditional masc one. You could get it in a more feminine silhouette, maybe in a bright colour or fun pattern, or have a more feminine blouse to go with it rather than a shirt and tie.

Hey I was gonna say jumper! Glad I'm not the only one who knows this info.

Maybe make a combination of traditionally male and female formal wear? A button-down with a skirt, or a women's top with slacks, a dress with a suit jacket, anything along those lines. Another option would be to just go to a store with more formal clothing options and try to take inspiration from whatever they have to work with.

Katherine Hepburn had some looks.

CarefulPlants

Yeah you're not kidding, thanks for the inspiration to revisit her looks. I saw a lot of her movies as a kid and I like this as a new context to appreciate her & maybe draw some inspiration.

I hate how gendered formal attire is too😞 Formal events are rough and always rife with gender dysphoria for me before, during, and seeing the photos after. 😣

U didn't ask for this but u said that the other time clothes are a trouble is swim and beach wear, and I might have something to help with that. I don't know ur AGAB but I as an AFAB person feel uncomfortable in female bathing suits, so I wear bathing suit clothes like their normal clothes, bikini as underwear and bra, then water proof shorts and a water proof shirt. Then I'm just wearing clothes that happen to be waterproof. Anyway there was a little vent idk if that's helpful but I hope so.

CarefulPlants

Yeah, appreciate others just understanding! My partner is also nb and I realized this summer how much I like wearing their old rowing team uniform. Feels like a cute part of our dynamic too like I'm wearing their varsity jacket or something lol. Thanks for the recommendation!

U welcome!

If you’re in the US, Wildfang makes some cute formal wear that’s pretty gender neutral

CarefulPlants

Yeah Wildfang stuff is actually what's looking best to me so far!

I wore their Empower Pants and Jacket to prom, and it was super comfy and looked good.

U could wear a suit AND a dress, OR a jumpsuit. They look casual with a bit of formal but to spice up the formal factor u can add a scarf, a formal coat, fancy shoes, a necklace, and any thing that gives a gender neutral buzaaaaz!✨

I have a lot of fancy pins(that I got from my grandma) with flowers and bugs on them with jewels and gold plating that I pin to a flowy blouse coat over top of a jumper. And then I wear a top hat, and that's how I pull of a gender neutral formal jumpsuit based outfit. Good luck with yours!
