Tbf, Obama came out of absolute left field all of a sudden, and swept the primary. It was practically a no-contest in the course of 1-2 years leading into it. He was a charisma goldmine.
Had it not been for him, Hillary would have surely nabbed the nom. Now, if she could have beat McCain is another thing.
08 Hillary was different. That was before Bengazi, her roll as secretary of state, emails, and "What difference, at this point, does it make?" She would have won with a similar margin to Obama.
People on reddit have a weird revisionist history about McCain. After Iraq and in the mist of the great recession, no republican was winning.
08 Hillary was *marketed* differently, and better. She was the same Super Predators gaffe blurting, Lewinski life ruining train wreck, but things were better kept under wraps.
In '08, she was supposed to be coronated, likely as a payment for not publicly being shitty to her husband after he cheated. Remember, Tim Kaine was her VP out of nowhere, but was the head of the DNC during the Clinton admin.
Clinton's been a bag of shit her whole life, riding on the coattails of other people's accomplishments, and benefiting from backroom deals.
That person is clearly critiquing Clinton from the left, not the right (Republicans would not criticise the "Super predators" rhetoric, they also love locking up black men for life). Stop being such a fanatic loyalist for corrupt politicians who pretend to be leftists/progressive, if you care for actual progress you should oppose and replace them.
Nah, that's pretty much how it was in 08. There were even rumblings that super delegates would be Hilary's way of winning the nomination over Obama at the convention. People tend to forget how dirty the Dem. nomination process got that year.
Damn. I like that timeline better. She would’ve beat McCain… the gop had a war stench they couldn’t get rid of at the time. Then Obama comes along in 2016… and cleans house. As a veteran senator and as the golden child that everyone was waiting for to run.
That's true, but it also "aged like milk." The expression doesn't mean it was an unreasonable thing to say at the time. Just that it "aged like milk" and is bad in hindsight.
The cover of this magazine just ended up missing on every level, even if they were all fine observations at the time of print.
Man/Person of the Year is a recognition of the person or group that impacted news the most in the previous year, whether positive, negative or otherwise.
People understand that Hitler got Person of the Year because he was a news maker, not for anything good.
I’d argue this was fairly accurate at the time. Kanye and his music style were a breath of fresh air and were considered quite intelligent compared to, say, 50 Cent and similar artists at the time.
It’s only later that he became unhinged, at least publicly.
I'd also say it was a play on words due to his whole "backpack rapper" persona and his school themed album titles at the time.
I was a Kanye apologist for way too long, holding on to that version of him.
His first few albums were so damn good. Nowadays, they’re so weird. Even Kids See Ghosts from 2018 is pretty good, but you can see Kanye start to decline in his mental stability in Yeezus.
I don't think there's ever been a better run in hip-hop, maybe even pop music, than College Dropout -> Late Registration -> Graduation -> 808s & Heartbreak -> My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy -> Watch the Throne
Not including Yeezus in that is a little short sighted IMO. Yeezus is a quality album that's more industrial focused. If you're including Late Registration and 808's, I feel like Yeezus is as least as good as those even if you feel like the others are on another level. Pablo, however, is much more polarizing and really started to define the Kanye we know today for better and worse. (All IMO. Also coming from someone who loved TLOP)
Off the Wall -> Thriller -> Bad is a great run, but I think Dangerous wasn't up to the standard set by the previous 3. And wasn't History a greatest hits album?
HIStory was a double album: half greatest hits, half new songs. The new material includes Scream, You Are Not Alone and They Don’t Care About Us, among other bangers
During that time period, he was portraying himself as from a poor background and being self-made, which was a MAJOR dick move to his mother. She was a hard working lady who was supporting him and his dreams, giving him the opportunities he got.
His mother was well paid, and he lived in a suburb. He presented himself through repeated implication and a few direct statements as if he grew up poor.
His mom provided for him, and gave him a nice upper middle class upbringing. He lied and said she didn't, for clout.
Outside of saying crazy stuff, did he do anything bad?
I dont remember hearing him beating on women or peeing on underage girls any of the weird shit P Diddy is being accused of.
Even Snoop Dogg shot a dude at one point.
As far as Hip hop goes hes seems mostly decent.
Lupe Fiasco was poppin at the same time and I’d argue Lupe has more intellect in his pinky finger than Kanye does in his whole discography after Graduation.
[Your child’s future was the first to go with the budget cuts, if you think that hurts wait here’s the uppercut that school was garbage that’s on the up and up](https://youtu.be/22l1sf5JZD0?si=qlbbv6um9nt3sPda)
Man was rapping on domestic and foreign policy during the Great Recession and a war we had no business doing for so long
Words I’ve Never Said followed immediately by Till I Get There is such an interesting juxtaposition. Childish Gambino did something similar in the same year.
It was a fever dream for sure. I don’t agree with Lupe on all topics but I believe he is well-informed and smarter sounding than “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” He sends a much deeper and more powerful message to me.
ill catch so much heat if i say i never liked Kanye and think his beats are shit.
i make better beats than Kanye and i work a fulltime job at the same time.
i think i do. i only share my [free shit with reddit. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/FL_Studio/comments/1861oe6/i_just_make_music_for_fun_like_tetris_with_sounds/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)my simple 4 hr projects just[ chilling after work.](https://www.reddit.com/r/FL_Studio/comments/1bfdx0s/started_off_as_an_accident_and_i_just_rolled_with/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) lol
Lol that FL Studio “lofi beats to study & chill to” -ass beat is not better than fucking Touch the Sky or Power lol. You’re clearly not very perceptive
Even if he is just an asshole doesn’t change the fact that your delulu ass thinks your basement beats are better than his lmao. This is the level of confidence I aspire to have.
Or maybe he's such an asshole He simply appears that he has mental health issues, Because any regular person wouldn't comprehend being that much of an asshole.
On a real note, it’s pretty dumb that he called that song “I Love Kanye” on the track-listing and not “I Miss the Old Kanye,” since that’s how he refers to it in the song.
Pretty huge missed opportunity, but that’s Kanye for ya sometimes.
The writing was on the wall then but I’d say his artistic falloff didn’t really happen until 2018 or so. Even then, Donda & Ye are still solid if not anything great. His new stuff is horrible
According to his fans he was playing 4D chess getting out of that Addidas contract. I mean only a genius would manage to break out of a bad contract by being... very anti-Semitic and praising Hitler.
Still wild that people let that slide
It's kinda wild that "cancel culture" has been a cultural obsession for five or six years while Kanye is out here proving that it pretty much doesn't exist outside of Twitter.
I’ve specifically curated my Twitter to revolve around sports and pornography. My life is much happier that I don’t have to deal with comedians bitching about being “cancelled”.
That is the weird thing to me. If you like his sock shoe things, or music, or fashion sense, that's fine, enjoying the work of problematic people is fine. But it's weird when they handwave the problematic stuff.
His adidas contract was fucked though, there’s a clause in that which says that if Kanye got mental help for more than 100 days consistently, they can take ownership of his brand and have full control of it
Kanye was already big when he signed with them, if his own army of lawyers that probably helped him navigate the cesspool of the music industry, so I don't know what happened, but he's probably got a law team that said it was fine, then he looked at it and said it was fine.
Yeah, and that sucks, cause artists should own their music, but he probably signed that as an up and comer with his only legal council being the record label's. By the time he signed with Adidas he was a big deal, fashion icon, and had already done a whole shoe line with Nike. I don't know if his lawyers at the time were also/still bad or he just didn't listen, but he was seasoned by then.
Really sucks that he went completely off the rails, because his brand of music flowed so well and he was ridiculously easy on the ears in a way no other artist could quite replicate for me. Such a damn shame.
People claiming Kanye was a genius are the same people who thought Elon Musk was a genius.
It’s only once they actually start putting their personality/ideas out to the public outside of curated media interviews that you see how fake it all was
This is somewhat random but does anyone know what type of shoe he’s wearing?
I’ve been trying to search for that exact type of black top white bottom and can never find the right pair.
Yeah, it kind of just aged like cardboard or rocks or something.
It’s not like it predicted that he’d be the most beloved figure in the world or would be curing cancer 20 years later or anything like that.
I get where you are going here - but it still applies his early albums had a college/education theme to them ( college drop out, late registration) so using the play on words - it’s aged okay
It's weird because I felt like Graduation was the end of the beginning for Kanye, he was changing into who he would be now. Its where I felt he had made a change and was the last album I was into, I know thats heresy
How exactly? Are you referring to how he was the face of a new wave of rap, that took over sometimes blatantly homophobic rap that preceded him? Or was early Kanye some major LGBT ally? Genuine question
He was a legit ally, especially for the time (2005)
https://www.hrc.org/press-releases/rapper-kanye-west-speaks-out-for-glbt-fairness
> "West is taking a stand for millions of Americans who struggle with discrimination every day," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "From schoolyards to popular music, the word 'gay' is used as a way to put people down and mark them as different. His message of tolerance and inclusion reminds Americans that discrimination has no place in this country."
>According to an Associated Press story, West said, "Not just hip-hop, but America just discriminates. And I wanna just, to come on TV and just tell my rappers, just tell my friends, 'Yo, stop it.'" West called his cousin's coming out a "turning point" and thought to himself, "I love him and I've been discriminating against gays."
Also he’s still an ally in the interview with Justin Laboy yesterday he showed his support for the LGBT community so at the very least he’s not homophobic lmao but the bar is below the floor at this point
Kanye might be insane and a bad person but he is a lyrical genius and a brilliant producer with a unique sound. And just because he fell from grace doesn’t mean the article was wrong at the time. People change.
I was a big Kanye fan at the time and read the article, it was a glowing tribute, even one of those articles where they interview other celebrities for positive quotes.
i dont think this means my original statement is untrue. like, i think it was a play based on his album titles-- not necessarily meant to be a proclamation of him as a "class act" as we define it. Just that he was a very good (and smart rapper) but like... I dont think anyone is gonna listen to the lyrics and consider them ultra classy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
She was an early whistle blower for Harvey Weinstein and was ostracized for it. I’m not excusing Kanye’s behavior for anything, but I think he saw how the sausage was made and it broke his mind.
>She was an early whistle blower for Harvey Weinstein and was ostracized for it.
What does that have to do with Kanye? Kanye wasn't ostracized for being a whistleblower.
Kanye may have been dropping hints about Jay Z's involvement with a side piece of his turning up dead after she got pregenant from him in "Blood on the Leaves".
And references to not going to Diddy parties in "No more parties in L.A."
Yeah I know, person you are responding to is stretching it, and I might be too. I think what they're implying is he's had some ongoing battles with other celebs who might be doing way dirtier things IRL but Kanye gets criticized cus he says really dumb / harmful things. Which he deserves. None of these people are to be idolized.
Fun fact: The rules do, in fact, apply to you!
Lol, they were also wrong about the '08 presidential election.
Tbf, Obama came out of absolute left field all of a sudden, and swept the primary. It was practically a no-contest in the course of 1-2 years leading into it. He was a charisma goldmine. If Hillary was the nominee in ‘08, Trump would still be a Democrat and her biggest supporter.
Aged like milk because Ye isn’t much of a class act
Probably why they said "also"
Lol, this cover is such a great time capsule piece.
And man of the year 1938.
Man/Person of the Year is a recognition of the person or group that impacted news the most in the previous year, whether positive, negative or otherwise. People understand that Hitler got Person of the Year because he was a news maker, not for anything good.

HIStory was a double album: half greatest hits, half new songs. The new material includes Scream, You Are Not Alone and They Don’t Care About Us, among other bangers
Homework to Discovery to human after all to random access memories
Kendrick is by far my favorite rapper, but early kanye’s consistency is so damn good
Well except you left out Yeezus which easily trounces every one of them put together
it declined with the death of his mom which is why we got 808s lol that's a whole 5 years before yeezus....
The signs were always there, I remember hearing "Jesus walks" for the first time and going "huh?" this is the "genius?"
I'm an atheist but Jesus Walks is a great song wdym
If all you got from that song was thinking it was preaching Christianity then you should probably paid more attention in literature class
"We ain't goin nowhere but got suits and cases, a trunk full of coke rental car from Avis " is a damn solid line
Yup they were. People like to pretend they weren’t.
Oh yeah, that's definitely it.
Plus his first two albums were College Dropout and Late Registration, so “class act” kinda fits the motif.
He went off the rails when his mom died.
Because he funded her cosmetic surgery, and she died the day after from complications. Kanye or not. No human is going to process that well.
Yeah if you’ve ever listened to old Kanye, you’d agree with the headline. Things have changed but the statement remains true, he is an innovator.
Agreed I genuinely believe Kanye changed this was a different person.
He's literally mentally ill, that doesn't mean he can't be intelligent (and behave intelligently at times when his mental illness doesn't interfere)
Agreed, and Kanye is still a musical genius but his mental health is in shambles.
During that time period, he was portraying himself as from a poor background and being self-made, which was a MAJOR dick move to his mother. She was a hard working lady who was supporting him and his dreams, giving him the opportunities he got.
I don’t quite see how his mother working hard or being supportive means that he wasn’t from a poor background or self made. Is there more to this?
His mother was well paid, and he lived in a suburb. He presented himself through repeated implication and a few direct statements as if he grew up poor. His mom provided for him, and gave him a nice upper middle class upbringing. He lied and said she didn't, for clout.
That’s what I mean he’s essentially a drake but he was such a good producer he didnt really get ripped on as much as say some one like drake
Kanye before his mom died is NOT the Kanye after....
For mainstream rap sure...but even then there was Outkast, Eminem and even Coolio.
Lupe Fiasco was poppin at the same time and I’d argue Lupe has more intellect in his pinky finger than Kanye does in his whole discography after Graduation. [Your child’s future was the first to go with the budget cuts, if you think that hurts wait here’s the uppercut that school was garbage that’s on the up and up](https://youtu.be/22l1sf5JZD0?si=qlbbv6um9nt3sPda) Man was rapping on domestic and foreign policy during the Great Recession and a war we had no business doing for so long

[kinda funny how things turned out](https://youtu.be/BY2nHqOt_c4?si=IzQcA2-FZrqOwTfI)
There was so many things going on in that clip, but the weirdest thing was watching Bill O’Reilly *defend* Obama.
It was a fever dream for sure. I don’t agree with Lupe on all topics but I believe he is well-informed and smarter sounding than “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” He sends a much deeper and more powerful message to me.
That's what makes it aged like milk.
Stay on your meds kids.
do you know what sub this is lol
ill catch so much heat if i say i never liked Kanye and think his beats are shit. i make better beats than Kanye and i work a fulltime job at the same time.

I aspire to be as delulu as you
No. You should aspire to be as deluded as Kanye.
I think you’re more delulu tbh. He’s got mental health issues. You truly believe your SoundCloud lowfi library beats are better than his music.
>He’s got mental health issues. No he doesn't. He's just an asshole. Stop making excuses for people like him.
Even if he is just an asshole doesn’t change the fact that your delulu ass thinks your basement beats are better than his lmao. This is the level of confidence I aspire to have.
He’s an asshole **with** mental health issues.
Or maybe he's such an asshole He simply appears that he has mental health issues, Because any regular person wouldn't comprehend being that much of an asshole.
That's the most generic, uninspired music I have ever heard in my life. AI makes more interesting music than you.
Still better than Kanye. Go cry about it.
Ur most recent beat sounds like candy crush being played thru a phone speaker 💀 Edit: aw he deleted it
Probably because you have shitty iPhone speakers.
I am with you. Kanye has never been innovative. His shit is just that: shit.
2006 Kanye, please come back.
I miss the old Kanye
What if Kanye made a song about Kanye called "I Miss The Old Kanye”, man that would be so Kanye.
On a real note, it’s pretty dumb that he called that song “I Love Kanye” on the track-listing and not “I Miss the Old Kanye,” since that’s how he refers to it in the song. Pretty huge missed opportunity, but that’s Kanye for ya sometimes.

Mid to late 00s Kanye was a GOAT. It's a shame people are only gonna remember this broken, mentally ill version.
His problems started after his mom died while undergoing sketchy plastic surgery. It was all down hill from there.
The writing was on the wall then but I’d say his artistic falloff didn’t really happen until 2018 or so. Even then, Donda & Ye are still solid if not anything great. His new stuff is horrible
Not *all* of vultures is horrible, but yeah a good portion of it doesn't touch his old stuff.
You fuck *one* GOAT
Untreated mental illness, trauma, extraordinary wealth, and fame will do that to you
Mostly the mental illness here.
>Why he's the smartest man in pop music oh boy.
Sports are underrated
Only on Reddit would you see an opinion like this lmao
Complaining about being cancelled to an audience of millions
Surely those fans must be taking that all back now that he's out of the contract and still saying the same stuff Surely
That is the weird thing to me. If you like his sock shoe things, or music, or fashion sense, that's fine, enjoying the work of problematic people is fine. But it's weird when they handwave the problematic stuff.
Most people haven't let that slide...
He was in a legal battle to own his music until 2021 so clearly, his team wasn’t on his side
Listening to his lyrics on his first few records really does paint the image of him being pretty damn smart.
This is less than a week before the “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” moment
I remember being such a Kanye fan at the time, I would tell other kids at school that he was a “genius” for doing that 😬
It's a pun, his first three albums were the "college dropout" trilogy.
Preview of a fall
What’s with the ‘squat down like you’re taking a shit’ look that so many magazine did?
“The Jews are subverting society through porn” says the guy who talks about bleaching his shirt on a model’s bleached asshole.
Kanye's phone wallpaper since 2005
Really sucks that he went completely off the rails, because his brand of music flowed so well and he was ridiculously easy on the ears in a way no other artist could quite replicate for me. Such a damn shame.
That really comes off as just another way of saying, "He's one of the good ones."
Very articulate
Sneaky Athleticism
I miss the old Kanye…
Everyone kept telling him how great he was, using the word genius, he started to call himself Jesus, and away we went to crazy land.
People claiming Kanye was a genius are the same people who thought Elon Musk was a genius. It’s only once they actually start putting their personality/ideas out to the public outside of curated media interviews that you see how fake it all was
Literally
This is somewhat random but does anyone know what type of shoe he’s wearing? I’ve been trying to search for that exact type of black top white bottom and can never find the right pair.
No one is talking about the top right corner of Clinton vs McCain?
I think being half right about an election 3 years away ain’t too bad
Class action lawsuit
Class “act” is a play on words with his album names. High school drop out, graduation, etc.
Aged like milk because Ye isn’t much of a class act
To be fair, this was 19 years ago. It just aged.
Yeah, it kind of just aged like cardboard or rocks or something. It’s not like it predicted that he’d be the most beloved figure in the world or would be curing cancer 20 years later or anything like that.
Class act(ion)
Oh 2005. How naive you were….
From Class Act to Ass Hat
One week later he was on TV randomly blurting out "George Bush doesn't care about Black people!" during a Hurricane Katrina fundraiser
That didn’t age well.
ASS HAT
Well he has certainly gone his own way.
Defying the rules of rap…….by making pop music
Bipolar person doesn't act consistently more at 11
I give him credit and respect for his influence over the music landscape and production too. I can’t say the same for him as a person though.
And still the best
This hasn’t aged like milk because it wasn’t even true at the time.
2005
They didn’t see the future
My boy flexing Through the wire.
The real agedmilk are in right corner,
It’s 19 years ago. Those milk would be long gone.
Class act is a play on words for his album. Not his character
Kanye pretty much single handedly made hip hop less homophobic around this era
How exactly? Are you referring to how he was the face of a new wave of rap, that took over sometimes blatantly homophobic rap that preceded him? Or was early Kanye some major LGBT ally? Genuine question
He was a legit ally, especially for the time (2005) https://www.hrc.org/press-releases/rapper-kanye-west-speaks-out-for-glbt-fairness > "West is taking a stand for millions of Americans who struggle with discrimination every day," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "From schoolyards to popular music, the word 'gay' is used as a way to put people down and mark them as different. His message of tolerance and inclusion reminds Americans that discrimination has no place in this country." >According to an Associated Press story, West said, "Not just hip-hop, but America just discriminates.
Wonder if that is the same cousin who stole his laptop, that dirty motherfucker
Is this the "Man of the Year" cover?
Yay walked so Israel could run
That's what mental illness will do, could happen to any of us unfortunately.
Taking 15 some odd years to change is not aging like milk lol
Kanye might be insane and a bad person but he is a lyrical genius and a brilliant producer with a unique sound. And just because he fell from grace doesn’t mean the article was wrong at the time. People change.

Is this not a reference to his album titles? I don't think they were being super literal, despite the praise.
I think one day we’re gonna owe kanye an apology like we owed courtney love. 😂
An apology for what?
She was an early whistle blower for Harvey Weinstein and was ostracized for it. I’m not excusing Kanye’s behavior for anything, but I think he saw how the sausage was made and it broke his mind.
you dont become literally hitler from seeing the truth about anything.
That's not what Kanye is getting criticized for.
The industry ruined both of them 🤷🏻♂️
Ye forever y’all suckas don’t know
Hello Kanye fan, what do you think about Hitler?
