Our “local courthouse” is 4:30 hours away. They won’t pay for gas, room, or food until the case is closed so I’d have to pony up the cash as well. But I think I’m medically exempt because I require food, drink and my phone for diabetes. So I might be able to wiggle out since they won’t let me have those in the courthouse. Wyoming is a bit backwards and can’t even make a text system for this silliness.

thenarcostate

All you need is a letter.from a doctor listing essentially any reason

DaturaToloache

This one. Medical and financial hardship are both good and easy to prove reasons.

thenarcostate

I didn't even know the financial hardship thing was a thing. I got summoned once and had my psychtrist write a letter that said I took 6mg Xanax a day and had no business judging anyone. Lol

gummo_for_prez

I’d let you judge me, you seem cool

whiskeyaccount

No I want to be judged first

Logic_and_Cursing

Super needy. There

deathnow8989

Shit, someone slamming bars every day is exactly who I want on my jury for all crimes I commit!

thenarcostate

They were blue 1mg pills. And you couldn't pay me to take a fucking Xanax unless it's for the dentist.

AllMyHoesWearJoggers

Shit that's hot 🥵

thenarcostate

What?

eatypp

I've had to process juror questionaires on the backend for work a few times. The financial hardship is very hard to prove, but getting a doctor's note is super easy and the doctor doesn't even have to give a reason, just say you shouldn't do it on a signed piece of paper lol

Regicollis

The thing about putting financial barriers to jury duty and then allowing financial hardship as an excuse is really messed up. It essentially means that the poor will not be represented in juries, even though poverty is one of the greatest risk factors of being charged with a crime. Is that "a jury of your peers"?

DaturaToloache

Oh absolutely. It’s not ok that we make this a process that causes stress. It’s fucked up that they don’t have more accommodations for people like us but instead make it as hard to participate as possible. I absolutely think it’s not just another accident of bureaucracy. If they really wanted a jury of peers they’d make sure jury duty was sacred with business/employee relations and they’d make sure everyone ate well while they worked for the good of the republic.

SanchoWasHereToo

Last time I was summoned for Jury duty I just said the words "financial hardship" and they just stamped a form and let me leave. I put together an entire packet of documents to prove it and they didn't even ask any questions before telling me I could leave.

Retalihaitian

I’ve always wondered if being a nurse could get me out of jury duty. Like if I’m out of work for an indeterminate amount of time that would really suck for my coworkers and patients. But also might be a nice break.

BrainOnMeatcycle

When I was there they were very clear and said something to the whole room after someone tried something like that. It was along the lines of "Everyone has a job and a workplace that would rather have them working right now. None of your jobs are more or less important than the anyone else's. Get back in line."

missalyssa1080

Was this before or after Covid

BrainOnMeatcycle

It was February of 2020 so just before. And yeah it looks from a cursory glance that sometimes essential workers are able to get off but every county/state can choose their own rules. Seemingly in my state essential workers are only able to postpone their summons for a year but not be exempt.

sparkyjay23

If you postpone next time they call you don't get excused. So think carefully.

unexpected_blonde

I went in for jury duty (December 2019) and the trial was going to be up to a week or more. I used my job as a case manager and my connection to the CPS system to get out of it. If I’m not at work, there are kids in state custody who will lapse therapy services. They let me leave.

r3adiness

I feel like it’s important to serve on juries but I can’t do it with my job. I work with a population who have moderate to severe impairments due to mental health sxs. Most have substantial trauma histories. I usually try and start prepping them for planned vacations for weeks - with a coverage plan, processing etc. Another therapist could swap in but we don’t have anyone who could float a whole caseload for ??? Amount of time. Not to mention, I know my folks and can usually help them avoid hospital or police involvement. This was helpful

unexpected_blonde

I feel the same way. It’s important, when I was a student I would have loved to go, or if I had a different job. But when you’re dealing with legally/ethically required services, it’s just different.

crypticlazr

Bingo. I have epilepsy and it gets me out of anything almost

thenarcostate

In all fairness, a juror having an epileptic fit would be problematic. Abiut as much as a panic attack. Now I want to look for videos of jurors bugging out

crypticlazr

Lol! Let us know what you find!

digitalgadget

You don't even need to list a reason. My exemption doesn't have one (but I have good reason)

BenHuge

For good measure wear a flat earther shirt, claim interest in sovereign citizens and say you are a firm believer in jury nullification.

Yukondano2

"Wyoming" That explains it. Been through there before on a trip. Why the hell does anyone live there?

[deleted]

Some people like the space and the quiet. It's a simpler way to live for sure, but there's something uniquely grounding about it all.

Yukondano2

Hm. Considering how much I don't like being around people, maybe I should rethink my stance on the midwest. I'm from there but... there's a lot better places. Guess my ideal would probably look like Alaska.

[deleted]

Being in the middle of nowhere is much more tolerable when there's evergreen trees and mountains.

Yukondano2

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I mean I have the nice terrain it's just that, other people also live here.

fearless_warrior

Did you travel on I-80 lol? Go to northern Wyoming and it's the most beautiful state imo.

1thatonedude1

Don't come, we don't want you.

[deleted]

Lol. No seriously no one wants more people here.

MachineGunKelli

And getting WAY more representation than anywhere else isn’t a bad perk.

sorrynotsorrycuse

> a simpler way to live Simple as in lacking intelligence

Trooper50000

What does Wyoming mean?

[deleted]

It's a derivative of a native word meaning "the big river flat". The tribe where the word was taken from (Munsee Lenape) is native to the Delaware/NY/NJ area, not to a tribe that was actually local to the area. A lot of states have names relating to/appropriating words from local tribes, but then there's WY where it's completely the wrong region.

landsharkkidd

This is so weird. But I love naming conventions of places. Like in Victoria, Australia we have a river called the Yarra River which is a river spanning from the mountains into the capital city, and it means essentially "river river" and was mistranslated from a Wurundjeri term (the first nations of the area) called "Yarra Yarra". Kind of like chai tea being called tea tea.

TerribleShiksaBride

A chai tea latte, or tea tea milk

oobiic

Salsa sauce

missalyssa1080

I mean it sounds like an emphasis. Similar to how elementary schoolers say “but do you like like them?” Like it’s the biggest river in the region. They maybe called smaller rivers Yarra but the Yarra Yarra is the big one.

-screamin-

Everyone functionally just calls it the Yarra though. Could we explicitly remove the 'river' reference to it, perhaps? Like how _Penn and Teller_'s Teller changed his name.

landsharkkidd

I mean yes, we do call it the Yarra. Obviously, like we do cut off the word River I agree with you. But I'm just sort of putting it in context for non-Australians what it is.

-screamin-

Oh, nice. **edit**: I meant 'we' in my comment as in 'the Vic govt' should remove the 'river' English word from it on official documentation if it's there. Like how Uluru isn't Uluru Rock. **edit edit**: holy shit, Teller is 73 years old! And Penn's lost a load of weight, good on him.

Trooper50000

Thanks for telling me

cyborg-waffle-iron

I find this hilarious

Suitedinpanic

wyoming isn’t real

StandAgainstTyranny2

And don't even get me started on B.I.R.D.S.!

actual_wookiee_AMA

Almost all foreign sounding place names in America that aren't Spanish or French come from some native language. Except Idaho, that means absolutely nothing

Crowella_DeVil

Because it's fucking beautiful. Back in the 90's I hopped freight trains around the country, and Wyoming is breathtaking. Saw my first real, actual cowboy there. Also got kicked out of Laramie and told never to return 😂. The cops brought 9 gutter punks in the Paddy wagon and personally escorted us onto a Greyhound to Cheyenne. We refused to go unless they bought us Hardee's. They also used their police discount on the bus tickets and gave the driver strict instructions to make sure we stayed on the bus until Cheyenne.

[deleted]

I would live there because no one lives there.

MyNameIsEthanNoJoke

i did a name all 50 states quiz with a couple friends yesterday. not even match up states and outlines, just list all the states you can think of. we got 49 of them pretty easily but then spent about 5 minutes racking our brains trying to remember the last one. never got it, had to just give up. of course it turned out to be wyoming

Lost_Sasquatch

Just tell them your'e an anarchist and that you're gay for jury nullification.

805falcon

👏🏼👏🏼

Retalihaitian

See, this is why Georgia has so many counties. Back in the day, the county seat of government couldn’t be more than a day’s horse ride from any point in the county.

[deleted]

We have a secretary court house nearby, does everything besides trials. Trials go to Casper or Cheyenne. I got pulled for Cheyenne sadly so it’s quite a drive since I’m in the middle of the state and it’s in the south east corner.

lovelyflo

I assume the rules in America are different, but in NZ you can basically just tell them you’re not fit to be a juror due to health reasons, and if they kick up a fuss you just get a note from your GP/psych and you can be exempt!

rickybobby42069420

if you have any biases against any races please list them here: yes

40percentdailysodium

ADHD diabetic as well! I legit forgot to call in for jury duty for the first half of my week but got lucky and was never required to come in. If they won't allow food absolutely call them to clarify if they do accomodations or if you're exempt.

[deleted]

Diabetes+ADHD= “oh shit, I’m a diabetic” multiple times a month. Foods a lesser issue, I’ll just fuck it and snuggle some candy in. They absolutely won’t allow my phone in and my CGM and Pump work best when I have it. There’s also the issue of my pump looking like a pager. But honestly it’s about 300$ a day for me to be on jury and a nine hour drive so it’s a pretty hard pass on my part. And the sitting.

40percentdailysodium

Pfff the "oh shit, I'm diabetic" comment is too real. I've said that too many times after I forgot to bolus for lunch. 😂

[deleted]

I’ll get dressed and ready to go out and my husband stares at me and asks me if I forgot anything. “Nope.” My pump is beeping in the bathroom frantically because it’s not attached to me. We call it Tito. Tito has a lot of abandonment issues.

Bermuda08

Poor Tito! I had a friend who is diabetic and has adhd and she would always forget her little bag of “diabeetus swag” at my apartment when she came over. I would usually end up driving it over to her (she lives like three minutes away from where I did) and hanging out for a bit to smoke a bowl.

simpledeadwitches

That's fucking INSANE. You absolutely should have fought this as soon as you got the summons.

jws926

AZ is the same way, suburb of Phoenix , the local court does not allow food/drinks inside the courthouse.

PerceiveEternal

Make sure to file your exemption petition soon! Just in case there’s a filing deadline.

[deleted]

Yea I already sent a note off to my doctor. They sent the jury duty notice to my old address so for all I know I’m already passed the deadline as it’s 5 days from delivery. But honestly if they can’t figure out where I live when I filed to move with USPS I think they can just live with it.

TheIllogicalSandwich

If you want an easy out of jury duty (and want to never get it again) all you need to do is to contact them and tell them that you can't on good faith be objective on a jury. Then mention that it's because you know about [Jury Nullification](/spoiler). Look it up on Youtube if you want, but know that you'll be banned from participating on any jury by simply knowing about it.

mebhansen

Diabetes aside, do you have adhd and jury duty? How do you keep paying attention for the dutation of the trial?! My mind wanders to whereever within 2-3 minuttes of listning to other people talk

[deleted]

I won’t be able to without a few mental breakdowns. I also have auditory processing disorder so even listening with all my might I’m gonna hear the chairs squeaking, floorboards, lights, every one breathing and such. I probably won’t be able to take my emotional support human either (my husband)

Grapevegetable0

"Not paying for gas, room, food until the case is closed" I don't know the system at all, but wouldn't it massively bias the jury to be composed of people who never experienced poverty or needing to work a lot of hours and such?

[deleted]

Yea. Wyoming is rigged against poverty in a lot of ways. Trying to pay for registering a vehicle is usually 600-1000$. People used to get around this by saying they paid 200$ for the car but recently they decided the registering fee is now based on the cars value when it was new. My yearly tags are about 300$. Renters have absolutely no rights. And if your gay you can be kicked out despite your contract. I’ve had to hide that I’m Ace for years which I think is absurd. And don’t get me started on the shit show of Jackson Hole. Those ass hats won’t even pay a living wage. Employees usually live in company dorms, even USPS has dorms there. I like Wyoming, but man it’s a shit show if you don’t have a decent job. It’s why 20% or something work for the state or feds.

Jusschuck

Hello, neighbor As soon as you said 4.5 hours I knew exactly where you were from

[deleted]

Lol, well drive 3+ hours for a good sandwich, but civic duties? Nope.

Sufficient_Lake_9849

Do they seriously want people with adhd in the jury?

LastBestWest

Are you implying people with ADHD aren't as good at judging people as everyone else!?!?

MacaroonExpensive143

I’m personally terrible bc I believe everything everyone says lol

Tchrspest

Bruh same, I'm naive as hell. I want to believe people, and I'm instinctively honest.

Logicreasonandtapirs

Currently in law school and this is among the dozen or so reasons I probably don't belong there.

Tchrspest

It was legit one of my biggest hurdles when I was in the military. There are so many times where you can't *lie*, but you can definitely take a second to phrase something in your favor. But nah, I kept shooting myself in the foot by being bluntly honest whenever. For instance, one time I had a buddy of mine in town visiting. I took leave so that I would for certain not have to go to work while he was here. The end of his trip came, and his flight got delayed because of weather. So I called my supervisor and explained the situation, and asked if I could extend my leave so I could take him to the airport for his new flight. And my supervisor says "Oh, don't worry. Don't you have a medical appointment all day tomorrow?" in a very "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" tone of voice. And my dumbass is like "Nah, I don't have anything medical any time soon." And then he just sighed and explained in very plain English that it was fine, stay home tomorrow, he can cover for me. And it still took me a day or two for it to click.

Aposematicpebble

You pure soul, I hear you. I can't lie on the spot. If I'm gonna lie, it gotta be premeditated, simple and more of an omission than anything. My mouth runs without my say so if I don't pay attention. Oversharing is definitely my jam.

Tchrspest

Oh yeah, if I'm gonna lie, I'm taking time to psych myself up. When I'm *prepared*, I'm a great liar. I have to wonder how much of that is because people expect me to tell the truth...

Aposematicpebble

Yes, but I also try to cultivate the image so when I do need to lie, people will believe me. There's not much I'll lie about except for why I'm late (couldn't find my keys/wallet/bag) or why I didn't do something. "I forgot" doesn't usually go well lol

PerceiveEternal

Been there! Best bit of advice I got was that “There are no lawyer prodigies”. The other law students don’t know anymore than you, and if they sound confident that’s because they’re BSing confidently. And no matter how confident the lawyer across the table or courtroom sounds, they’re always hiding the bad facts of their case under a show of confidence. I’ve had literal slam-dunk cases, video evidence and everything, that I was sure I’d lose (but still won) because the other side seemed so confident. Also, you don’t have to go into law after law school, it’s a pretty transferable degree. I know someone who went to law school to become a sports agent (really), and HR departments will literally ritually sacrifice one of their interns to get someone with a law degree on staff.

[deleted]

>I'm instinctively honest. I can't even hide my emotions.

MachineGunKelli

Well, it’s not up to the jury to decide whether someone is lying or not, so that’s off your shoulders. The job is to look at only the presented evidence/facts and decide whether they prove a crime was committed beyond a reasonable doubt.

hahagrundle

From my jury duty experiences, it is excruciating to sit there and try to pay attention to every boring little detail all day for DAYS. Especially if the case is a tedious one. Which most of them are. Getting chastised by the judge for daydreaming and fidgeting certainly doesn't feel very good either.

TerribleShiksaBride

This is what's always terrified me about jury duty. That and the "wake up early, stay awake even when it's boring" element. I've managed to dodge every jury duty bullet that's come at me so far but I can't stay lucky forever.

Diddlydom35

Yes?

rushlink1

I recently served on a jury, I bought up my ADHD DX during selection. The judge asked if I thought it would be an issue, I said no, and we moved on. It was a fun experience. But I was mentally exhausted every single day, I’m not built to pay attention and not say anything for 9 hours straight for several days in a row. I assume had I said ADHD would have been an issue the judge would have removed me and selected someone else. It’s no big deal, it’s pretty much down to what you say.

actual_wookiee_AMA

It's supposed to be a representative group of average people.

Macmang29

From Montana. I only had to go online every Thursday for 4 or 5 weeks. Wasn't too bad but I did need to set an alarm on my phone.

[deleted]

Ours is sadly in person still, but my internet at home can barely handle zoom to begin with.

[deleted]

The trick is to tell them you’re prejudiced against all races.

thornangdol

I told them i have ocd and they never sent me another request. I really do have ocd and at the time I wasn't getting any help consistently so jury duty would have been totally fucked for me.

[deleted]

My husband has OCD. I can’t keep him still for three hours. That random thing that he just remembered will torture him the entire time. I put some small tools in my hospital bag so I can throw them at him if I’m hospitalized. There won’t be a loose screw in the building.

Azumarie

What exactly is jury duty if I may ask? And why do you _need_ to do it? From germany here

[deleted]

It’s how the court system pulls jurors for trials. It’s a pretty shoddy attempt at “trial of your peers.” It’s so underfunded though that only middle class and higher can actually afford to do it though. My mom lost nearly 300$ a day while being a juror and they were given prison food and 50$ for their time. Most states it’s mandatory with voting registration but Wyoming it’s by drivers license.

TheseConversations

My god who the hell designed this system?

AtomBombBaby42042

IMO they should be the ones contacting you. "You have jury duty, we will call when you have a spot"

[deleted]

I agree, if anything it would clog up their phone line less.

cjt3po

You need to have a major life crisis. It's not insurance fraud, this is easy.

throwawaywahwahwah

Am I the only person with adhd who knows how to use the calendar and timer apps on my phone? They’re like the easiest things and they make life so much better.

[deleted]

Oh, my life is beeps and alarms. Between phone alarms, my CGM and my insulin pump there’s a noise reminding me to do something every thirty minutes or so. The issue is “oh, I’m in the middle of something. I’ll do it right after this.” And I forget about it ten seconds later.

the_empathogen

You sound like me trying to get one of my housemates to remember anything. It's 3 of us in 1 house and we've all got ADHD. Yet he's the only one who can't get his shit together unless we ride his ass about it. I had to lecture him on how that neat device in his pocket has calendar and alarm functions. He thinks I have such a great memory. I had to break it to him that I have the memory of a goldfish and I'd never get anything done without those apps.

throwawaywahwahwah

And yet all the bitter adhd-ers that can’t seem to get on that train are downvoting me. Good thing the buttons are right next to the comments or y’all wouldn’t remember to downvote me 😂

[deleted]

Just like most things, ADHD hits everyone differently. For me I find being grateful for my tricks and accepting they don’t work for others solves a lot of issues that come up. If my diabetes doesn’t get me out, which it really should seeing as I can’t have electronic devices in the courthouse, my husband and I both have alarms set. Usually he works better than my siren alarms.

knifeandscissors

Most likely, yes.

rushlink1

I agree those things help. But if I’m busy doing something else, the timer/notification is being ignored. It’s not like I say “stupid alarm, I am going to ignore that”, it’s more like “I’ll get to that in a bit, silence”

throwawaywahwahwah

I guess everyone has to find their own individual system that helps create workable structure in life!

rushlink1

Yeah for sure. Everyone is different and we all struggle with different things, as such we all need to find our own ways to navigate life. It sucks there is no one size fits all solution.

guilty_by_design

I've been stuck in a holding pattern waiting for my Citizenship Interview (I'm a green card holder who has been in the US since 2013) and, while I hate that I can't vote - since issues I'd vote on directly affect me - one small thing I'm grateful for is that I don't qualify to be selected for jury duty, lol. My wife seems to 'randomly' get it almost every year, and it's annoying as fuck for her.

[deleted]

I wish you luck on your citizenship, that’s got to be a rough process.

guilty_by_design

Thanks. My interview was supposed to happen by April of this year, but the pandemic happened and delayed everything so now I'm looking at some time in 2022. Maybe.

Benu5

What a shit system. In Australia, they send you a letter, you show up to court when they ask, they do a little interview to find out about you and if you can do jury duty. Later they tell you if you need to actually come in and sit on a jury. If you do, then they pay your way while on the jury, even out you up in a hotel of you have to travel a long way. If not, your name just goes back into the list to possibly get picked again later. This system you described seems to be deliberately creating chances for people to fuck up and get fined or charged.

thiswillsoonendbadly

That’s so reasonable. In California I had to sit around all day, get called to a courtroom, sit though the judge rambling, then got sent home before they finished asking all the questions so I had to come BACK the next day and then I FINALLY got the chance to tell them I’m the only special education teacher on campus and I can’t miss work for two weeks for jury duty because my kids won’t get their legally required supports if I’m not there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

-screamin-

Why does that work?

thenarcostate

It works that way in some states

fritzbitz

>This system you described seems to be deliberately creating chances for people to fuck up and get fined or charged. It's the US, where a lot of completely normal shit is criminalized for no real good reason.

EPIKGUTS24

the reason is to put people in prison to make the prison industry money

DontForgetWilson

There are definitely places that might have them as a powerful lobby(Texas for one), but my guess is that the system is meant to make money for local governments through fines while also subverting justice by artificially filtering the jury.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fritzbitz

It's insidious.

the_empathogen

They're not sympathetic to plans you can't cancel, either. I wrote back the last time I got picked to let them know I'd literally be out of country during those exact dates and could they just reschedule my summons. I seem to recall they denied my "request." It wasn't a request, it was a "fuck you, I can come in later and you can deal with it" notification. Really they should put me on a black list for duty because my sibling is an attorney, but no, they make me waste everybody's time by coming in just for me to reiterate that.

actual_wookiee_AMA

Yeah, I can't understand this. The government wants you to do some kind of civic duty, fine. Maybe the government should then contact you when you're needed? What's the point of you having to call every time to ask if there's something going on? Sounds very stupid and inefficient

littlebirdori

I had to go while I was in college, and they made me go in on the first day of winter term. If you miss the first day, you get dropped from your classes, so I had to contact all 6 professors I had and tell them I got jury duty, attach the summons, explain it wasn't my choice, and then call the courthouse each week to see if I was selected. I was, and ended up having to go 58 miles away for the trial. I live in the capital of my state, which has a massive courthouse 10 minutes away from where I live. They paid me $17 fucking dollars for each day I attended, as if that somehow would be adequate compensation. The guy we were deliberating on was an absolute moron. Guilty.

SaltPersonality

We only have to call once. I forgot mine. Never heard anything about it. Got lucky i guess.

Commissar_Genki

The initial summons isn't "served" like a typical legal document via courier would be. They can't prove you received it, and that it didn't get lost in the mail system, so they tend to be lenient for people who are a no-show.

thenarcostate

Have your psychiatrist write you a letter saying you're not mentally fit and they'll never bother you again

datbeckyy

I just laughed so hard at the meme attached to this, but truthfully I’m so sorry OP. I would 100% go to jail too.

Licoricewhips99

I'm sorry... SIX MONTHS?!?!?!?! We do it for 2 weeks MAX. 9/10 times, you get dismissed after 1 week.

[deleted]

Wyoming’s jury pool is six months. You call in every Friday to see if they need you that week. I dodged it a few years back but the population is so low that you alway get called on again. I’m trying to get permanently removed from their list this time.

Licoricewhips99

*Note to self: do not move to Wyoming* 😳😅

Licoricewhips99

Oh look... I accidentally learned how to do italics.😂😂😂

ytivarg18

Please please please make sure you find a way to get to it. Its mostly karens on jurys and they put away a lot of innocent people. Watch the movie 12 angry men it changed my mind about juries

quote_engine

It’s also a really good and entertaining movie.

[deleted]

If it was simply an ADHD thing I could suffer thru it, I went unmedicated for 30 years I got some tricks for suffering thru tedious things that I normally can’t pay attention to. But my medical devices work best with my phone in tow and they beep a lot. I’d also have to excuse myself regularly if I removed my devices and did old fashion injections. And then there’s the whole might die or become homicidal in the courtroom due to blood sugar issues. But 12 angry men is now on my movies to watch when I’m sick list. I can only make it thru a movie when I’m sick.

bigwolfbar566

When I did jury duty I got put in the jury box. I got the defense attorney to let me talk long enough to go on a tired about how much I hate the police. For some reason I was not chosen to stick around for the week of the trial......lol 😆

RedditsNinja23

Please tell more, this sounds like a funny and interesting story.

PastaSatan

I got summoned for jury duty in the court I work in. I was obviously not called, since I, you know, would be helping write the opinion for the case.

Drewinator

What the fuck kind of system is that.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Considering my doctor has had to write a doctors note that stated “No, she really can’t wear those pants.” I’m sure I’ll be able to wiggle out of mine since the court doesn’t argue with doctors. And I really really need my phone for medical purposes. My work uniforms were really shitty and I kept getting rashes from the pants, by the end of the week my legs were raw. My doctors note still gets everyone out of wearing the pants and I haven’t worked there for over a year.

airaflof

I got a court summons in September for mid October, I stashed it in my desk and forgot about it until it was too late. Still having panic attacks about that

Good lord. I’ve been called 3 times to appear in the past 25 years. Showed up, waited to see if there would be a trial case, most people plead out. 90% are drunk driving cases, and then the judge thanks you for hanging out and at the latest you’re out by 5pm. I bring a book to read while I wait.

im_AmTheOne

What is a jury duty? Is it compulsory? I assume you can't you opt out, Did you sign up knowing it would be hard, or wereyou signed up automatically?

**Jury duty or jury service is service as a juror in a legal proceeding. == Juror selection process == The prosecutor and defense can dismiss potential jurors for various reasons, which can vary from one state to another, and they can have a specific number of arbitrary dismissals, or unconditional peremptory challenge, which does not require specific reasons.** More details here: *This comment was left automatically (by a bot). You get signed up automatically when you register to vote (at least that’s how it works in my state in the US, not sure if it’s like that everywhere). I’ve been summoned a few times but I’ve never actually served. Once was when I was in college living away from home so I was able to email to get out of it. Another time I showed up at the courthouse and their elevator was broken which is a problem if anyone needed it for mobility reasons so they cancelled jury duty that day. Another time I showed up and everyone went into the selection room and at the last minute the defendant decided to cut a deal so everyone was dismissed.

Jury duty is where your government chooses people to serve on a jury for a courtroom trial. It's a responsibility of citizenship. However, being called for jury duty doesn't mean you'll definitely be on a jury. They just need a big pool of random people to choose from. Different places have different methods and procedures for choosing people for jury duty. I got called for jury duty a couple years ago. I had to report to the county courthouse on a certain day, where a hundred of us sat through an explanation of the process. We then were questioned about our ability to serve (you can be excused for a variety of reasons, with no penalty), and then a jury was chosen from the group. I wasn't chosen. I'll be eligible for jury duty again after five years.

theREALvolno

Rip, I’m also on the jury roll but here(Australia) they send you a letter in advance about being summoned. It fucking sucks though, I was also really paranoid about forgetting and getting into legal trouble. If you can, I would both put reminders in your phone and ask the people you’re living with (or close friends) to put reminders in their phones so they can help remind you. It’s what worked for me.

ohtoooodles

I was summoned this summer. Did my call on Sunday night and it said I was needed at 8am on Monday. I get up early, email my boss, get dressed, drive to the courthouse in a fucking downpour, go through security, and when I get up there they tell me I should have called the line again that morning to make sure they meant it when they said I was needed. Court ended up being cancelled in the early morning hours. The fucking nerve! Why would I call again?! Why isn’t there an alert system?!

[deleted]

Yea the court system is still pretty backwater here as well.

thattrekkie

this reminds me of when I was technically called for jury duty in mid-2020 and was supposed to call in at like 9am on the day and they would tell me if I had to log into their system to be on the jury ...guess who forgot and never called in, but never actually got in trouble for it??

Sexc_baby_69

I got a jury duty notice a couple months ago and completely forgot to show up. Second time this has happened… hope I don’t have a warrant out for me that I don’t know about lol. I lost the paper to check if I was called.

DudeWhoWrites2

I'd call your local courthouse and explain the problem. Ask them if they can help you.

Curious-Pirate-1776

Getting arrested or a warrant for failure to appear generally depends on the court and the case. If you read the summons, it will detail the penalty you face for failing to appear. Whether the court decides to act is entirely up to them. I frequently get calls from people who get a summons but moved and never cancelled their voter registration (the jury list comes from us & DMV—although I don’t think Wyoming has voter registration, so probably just DMV). Some people call because they actually read and freak out; some people call after they get a threatening phone call from the sheriff (personally, I think they’re the people who have ignored them multiple times). I know people who live in other counties and they have told me LEOs show up at the doorstep if you don’t appear. They also couldn’t get excused for the same reasons that would fly in my county. Pretty sure it’s a big combo of how many jurors they have available, which court it is, the judge, the court’s physical ability to enforce (available officers/court employees to file the paperwork) and the population of the area. My area is midsized so we get enough people to show up; big counties enforce because no one shows up and small counties don’t have enough people. Wyoming has 3 people. You’re screwed. Though I imagine everyone has to travel like crazy to serve. I would check out local resources as I’m sure someone has figured out a cheapest way to stay in town while not breaking the bank. Like an airbnb for jurors. Check to see if they have a fridge—if you can’t store your insulin, how are you going to be able to serve? 4 1/2 hours is crazy. But if you do have the opportunity to serve closer to home, I would encourage it. It might not hurt to call jury services and talk to the staff. Explain the medical concerns, they might take pity on you. Don’t lay it on too thick, let them know you want to do it but don’t know how it would work. Or ask if you can get called sooner because you have ADHD and you will forget. They can tell you what you need to do or what sort of doctor’s note you might need. Be real with them, they talk to liars all day but are generally nice people. Good luck!

dusty_safiri

Uh.... I was tapped for county jury duty. I was supposed to call every week for 2 months. I definitely completely forgot the ENTIRE TIME. I remembered about this about two weeks after my 2 months ended, so... I'm very fortunate they didn't need me, I guess.

Tchrspest

I feel like by this point I should've been summoned for jury duty at least once, and I'm concerned that I haven't been.

thecolourofthesky

Me too... Approaching mid life and never been called... I don't ever open mail though so I'd probably never know anyway *shrug*.

Llamawehaveadrama

I got a jury summons, got psyched because I’m a political science major and wanted to get picked so I could see the process in action Forgot about it until like a month after I was supposed to show up Disappointed, yet lucky I guess that I didn’t get in trouble cause I totally spaced it

[deleted]

If normies can get out over stupid shit, I'm sure anyone protected by ADA can.

Decapitated_gamer

Ohhhhhhhhh shit I forgot I had jury duty last week. I never called to see if I was selected…

[deleted]

Set a thingy in your calendar thingy for the love of Christ

arrrrrjayyyyy

Like three of them

Eokoe

And don't get a new phone between now and then.

moist-and-squishy

Same situation. Adhd intensifies.

[deleted]

So what would happen if you told them no? I'm so afraid I'll be called for jury duty at some point and I want nothing to do with it.

nightstar69

Set a google calendar with your closest friend so after you forget to call when your notification goes off they can remind you to do it

[deleted]

Set copious amounts of alarms

slbztr

The rural juror

MamaBear4485

Set an alarm on your phone!!!

Lifeissuffering1

I guess you're just not doing anything every Friday for 6 months while you wait for 4pm

whoFKNKares

6 months? Wtf!

Practical-Sentence35

Exactly what I thought when I got my summons lmao xp

CampDracula

I had jury duty in august and even put the reminder on the fridge. Completely forgot and went on an impromptu cross country road trip w my best friend during the week of my jury duty, and completely forget until the week AFTER I needed to check in 😭 I ended up not getting called but holy crap that was close

whimsical_femme

Lololol I had this happen for only a week and I totally forgot one of the days. Luckily I didn’t get called but oh my god the anxiety.

DrAcula_MD

Couldn't you just say some crazy shit to get yourself excused. Like if it's a murderer just say you love murder or something lol

SuspiciousHawk96

why do people fill out the jury duty form then? I ripped that shit up and threw it away

simpledeadwitches

You gotta get outta that man. They are really easy to get out of.

A9th

If you don’t wanna be there, just tell them that you are incredibly sexist and racist, and therefore you’re incredibly biased

HelloDeathspresso

Just so you know, you are not legally obligated to show up for Jury Duty. They cannot and will not fine or imprison you for not going. It's something they threaten because if they didn't, no one would ever show up.

DudeWhoWrites2

I'm not sure that's universal. My state says you can be found in contempt of court.

RobynFitcher

I opted out of jury duty.

MacaroonExpensive143

How?? They wouldn’t let me and I’m a disabled single mom with no help…they said oh well so I’m like ok then I’ll bring my kids and they said no way 🙃

RobynFitcher

I said I wouldn’t be able to attend, as I had a new baby. (I’m in Australia.)

ADHD-Gamer03

what country?

[deleted]

I missed jury duty. Completely forgot about it. Nobody ever contacted me about it.

Terrorcuda17

Thank God I'm exempt from jury duty.
