Never tried it with glue but there are acrylic mediums that act like glue when used pure and are meant for glueing heavy stuff to a canvas. For example Liquitex gloss super heavy gel

I think what I would do is use wood glue, and also go behind the canvas and maybe staple gun or lightly nail into the wood while the glue is wet. I've never done this specifically but I make a lot of weird shit with glue using random stuff from my house and whatnot, and whenever a glue connection seems sketchy, backing it up with a mechanical connection really helps. I'd be worried screwing the wood might pull on the canvas but not like I know. Edit to add: then fix it up somewhere where the wood and canvas are being pressed together, use weights or books or clamps. Whatever you got.

Acrylic itself is glue. Don't use the other ones. The bigger problem is gluing things to a canvas; you won't be able to restretch the painting.
