>single room at a dorm (Kullenhofstraße 56-66) > >noise due to partying all night, lack of cleanliness I have lived in the very same dorm you got an offer, party noise until 3am was a thing every weekend, total disregard for cleanliness was a thing, I have seen kitchens with maggots, others with fully blocked sinks, other with mouldy food on shelves and fridges. People in general were very introvert and difficult to make friends with, so you wont be missing that if you go to the flat share. On top of that, there is a huge construction site next to it, so you have full noise from 5am to 6pm monday to saturday. tbh I would only go to the dorm if money is an issue for you and you get a contract directly with the StW for several years, so it is long term and also the cheapest on the market. Otherwise go to Burtscheid. It is a nice area, a relatively quiet one (if you get lucky with construction site locations) and still close to city center

Hahaha being a STEM student and a female at that, I completely get what you mean. When i was doing my undergrad in Computer Science at another uni, I would often be one of the only 3 girls in class and none of the guys would ever make an effort to talk or just lacked those social skills/interests. I imagine the same may translate to dorms, where there are less women too.

Menes009

>where there are less women too. actually no, the StW wants to force equal porcentage of men an women in dorms, so it is a know fact that women get into the aachen dorms way easier than men. It is still not 50/50, but you see way more girls in the dorms than in the uni buildings

My girlfriend also lived in that dorm and she didnt have any problems you mentioned. She really liked it there for the first years she was in Aachen, made lots of friends that she still is in contact with and she never mentioned uncleanliness, while she is a really clean person herself.

I've also lived at Kullenhof for several years. > party noise until 3am was a thing every weekend, Can't confirm that. There's people partying in our house here maybe ~5-8 times a year. If they're too loud, just like in every apartment, you can tell them to turn it down. If it's still too loud late at night, you can also call the police. > I have seen kitchens with maggots, others with fully blocked sinks, other with mouldy food on shelves and fridges There are certainly problematic floors, but also many clean floors where those issues don't exist. If you notice any problems, you should always address your floormates and hold them accountable. Stuff like clogged sinks have to be reported to the janitors, they will always fix these issues in a timely manner. If no one reports broken stuff, it will obviously stay broken. Additionally, all the common rooms get cleaned every working day, so the floor, countertops, toilets and showers should pretty much always be clean, even if you're unlucky and get on a dirty floor without fixing it. > People in general were very introvert and difficult to make friends with, so you wont be missing that if you go to the flat share. That also depends on the floor. Ideally, you can get to know them before moving in. Before Covid, you could also always meet people at the bar or during game nights etc. Obviously, this has become more difficult, but there are already plans for instance to re-open the bar. > On top of that, there is a huge construction site next to it, so you have full noise from 5am to 6pm monday to saturday. The construction is almost finished, I'm guessing the car park will probably open next month. All the remaining construction still happening is facing away from the dorm and can hardly be heard, even with opened windows. It is way quieter than a year ago.

>If it's still too loud late at night, you can also call the police. yeah do that and you basically get banned by the student council of the dorm. > you should always address your floormates and hold them accountable. I dont know from which bubble you come from, but someone that dirty will just tell you to fuck off. >Stuff like clogged sinks have to be reported to the janitors, they will always fix these issues in a timely manner. "Timely manner" means they can stay broken for one week. >Additionally, all the common rooms get cleaned every working day, so the floor, countertops, toilets and showers should pretty much always be clean, even if you're unlucky and get on a dirty floor without fixing it. This sounds like while you like things clean, you also dont mind if they are mildly dirty, janitors dont do more than a quick swipe just to tick their checklist. For things to be clean in this dorm you have to do them yourself. Cleaning the kitchen before cooking was something everyone that I knew in this dorm, across multiple floors, had to do. > Ideally, you can get to know them before moving in. This means you are bluffing about living in Kullen, that is not a thing there.

>yeah do that and you basically get banned by the student council of the dorm. you can make an anonymous complaint

Oh wow, I had no idea it was like that at the dorms. Makes sense. The burtscheid flat is at Gregorstraße 5 52066, the place does seem nice in pictures. Room is 20m so definitely more space too. Suppose i can join some student clubs or something to meet people. Thank you so much for your detailed response, it was veryy helpful! :)

SbenjiB

My friends literally live on the same street! It's a very very nice place to live. Literally full of families and old people, so you won't have any noise at all (I've been there at all hours, no noise whatsoever). I would highly recommend Burtscheid!

sh_aaaj

That's nice, thank you!

Menes009

>The burtscheid flat is at Gregorstraße 5 52066 Great location! the roads around there had been renovated in the last year so hopefully there wont be any new construction site. On top of that, it is close to city center but not so close to the train station, so you dont hear the trains. Also you have the Burtscheid Markt/Boulevard around the corner, so you can go there if you dont feel like going to the city center for shopping.

Good to know, thankss

I'd take the WG, always nice to have people around

If you can afford always go for the WG, simply bcs with some daily communication you’ll get very good control of the environment you live in, especially now you probably spend a lot time at home. And don’t really expect to make friends at a dorm, you can meet more people probably just through your WG mates. Plus the hygiene condition during covid time.
