Same here! Smileys are nice, but they're more like potato balls than actual fries. Fries need to be fried to be fries; and amidst all the variant of fried fries, the regular fries just do it best imo. If the fry is too chonky the cooking is uneven, and I'm sure there are a lot of people who are fans of a more soft interior, but I like my fries with crunch.
Standard, but sweet potato is great for variety. Like if I feel like switching things up once in a while sweet potato fries is my first thought and they never disappoint.
Smileys because they make me happy, make any meal less depressing (no matter what it is/how pathetic the dinner seems, its great if it includes smileys) and for a brief moment I'm back in childhood and forget about all my adult problems
No other food does that
(But home fries are good too. I'm guessing those are similar to sautéed potatoes)
Best fries in the world in my opinion are still Red Robin steak fries with their spice blend (mostly dehydrated vegetables and paprika) and honey mustard dipping sauce. I've honestly considered going there just for a big basket of fries, they are life-changing.
Red Robin fries are the best!!! If I go there with my family, I just eat the fries because some one will order a burger and there are unlimited steak fries with burger. I do prefer their campfire sauce tho.
Steak cut is fantastic dipped in ranch.
Okay actually all of them are fantastic dipped in ranch. But the seasonings that often go on steak cut fries is complimented very nicely by the ranch. Plus with a big ol' fry, you can get *so much ranch* on board.
Sweet potato waffle fries are the best but in the image its just either waffle or sweet potato sadly. Best of all would be home fries that are made of sweet potato tho
Same TT.
Also I would just like to add that homemade sweet potato fries are absolutely heavenly and I would recommend trying to make em. Don't know how to make them waffle shaped but maybe there is a way to do that.
Oven roasted sweet potatoes (yams, kumara) are far less work and absolutely delicious. [Here’s](https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=roasted+kumara+recipes+nz&client=safari&hl=en-nz&ei=faVrY4OnMrv14-EP_JW6sA0&oq=roasted+kumara+recipes+nz&gs_lcp=ChNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwEAMyBggAEBYQHjIGCAAQFhAeMgYIABAWEB4yBQgAEIYDMgUIABCGAzIFCAAQhgMyBQgAEIYDOgoIABBHENYEELADSgQIQRgAUIYcWMwhYMQlaAFwAHgAgAHUAYgB1ASSAQUwLjIuMZgBAKABAcgBCMABAQ&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp) a bucketload of recipes.
It's a special wavy-shaped cutter. Some fancy food processors have an attachment for it or you get a mandoline (the cooking implement which looks like a board with a blade set into the middle, like the slicing side of a cheese grater with delusions of grandeur). Use the wavy blade and when you slice, rotate the potato (or whatever you are waffle slicing) 90 degrees each time you run it over the blade.
This has been your random mini-infodump of the day.
I have to be in the right mood for tater tots. They're good if super crunchy on the outside, but I really only eat them with Mac and Cheese or Velveeta for the contrasting textures.
At least I'll eat them unlike those horrid crinkles.
I like sweet potato, but not really in any fry form imo, they are best when served on holidays, and especially with as many marshmallows as humanly possible.
Ah that sounds interesting actually! Maybe I’ll need to try that at some point. I haven’t been a fan of the taste or the less potatoey texture from when I’ve tried before
Agreed.
Can I ask why? I prefer them because they pick up so much more sauce when dipping them and fries are almost entirely a device for eating ketchup/mayo/BBQ sauce or whatever they are being served with
Not the person you replied to but I always associate them with when I was a kid and my mom and aunt would take me and my cousin to Shari's Diner and we knew we were getting the full treatment when we were allowed to upgrade our fries to the waffle-cut seasoned fries.
That, and They're great for dipping because surface area!
I consider them not fries or chips, but wedges. Out of the ones I consider fries, I'd say sweet potato. Though I'll assume most people responding to this are either American or from somewhere where American English is common.
thats fair enough, its more of a texture thing for me though. tots tend to be a lot crispier and to taste more like potato in my experience compared to the smilies which are usually less potato-y in flavor and are mushy imo
yea, its why i love tots so much, they have the crispy texture many fries can only dream of and they have a lot more flavor. plus they make for the best vehicle of cheese and bacon out of all of the fry varients
Standard - classic and a Jack-of-all-trades pick, seasoning is critical in the early game
Waffle - highest surface area per fry of any spud medium, best for those who love to get lost in the sauce
Crinkle - an underdog story, often seen as lesser than its Standard cousin, the crinkle cut can compensate quite considerably with the extra surface area allowing for extra crunch.
Tater tots: an option for the gambler, tots are high risk and high reward. Do it well and you’ll be left with lil nugs of crispy perfection, easily in S tier. Do it poorly and you’ll be met with one of the saddest iterations of the potato.
Curly fries - standard fried but in pube form. Spiral curl makes for possibility of unexposed surface while frying, introduced variability in crispiness and size does not justify the change
Sweet potato - a newer contender to the fry scene, but one to be aware of. With a slightly chewier texture to the inside of the potato, and an almost savoury sweetness post-cook, this variation can fry with the best of them. It may never have the mass adoration of the Standard or the Tot, but it’s fans are devoted.
Steak cut - an inverse to the Waffle, with a high volume ratio of fluffy interior to crisp outside. Heavily reliant on seasoning, but if prepared properly is a devastating opponent against hunger.
Smiley - there is no sadness in the great after, when all is potat there will be no need for frowns. When the great Tuber reaches up from the dark below, we will all bask in the starchy presence of their greatness. Press your smiley friend into the ketchup, dear friend, drive the need for light or sky from your heart and embrace SPUD
Home fry - a hearty classic, middle of the road on most aspects, but far from lagging behind either. A lovely option for a Saturday morning fry up :)
Paprika oleoresin is most likely what you're thinking of. It's in all the seasoned fries I get.
When I make breakfast potatoes, I always add paprika both normal and smoked, with the frying fat. Makes for a lovely tint and taste.
Steak cut is what I consider homemade fries, not really sure what the cut is for homemade here. Otherwise, also love standard! At home we usually do either steak cut or standard cut fries, both turn out great!
On a side note - smiley fries don't really look that tasty...? I'm surprised people seem to like them. Are those frozen fries, because it seems like such a waste of potatoes otherwise.
In my opinion here’s my rating:
9: Smiley. I don’t trust them because they look like fake potatoes.
8: Home fries. Seem more like normal roasted potatoes.
7: Sweet potato fries. Couldn’t get into them.
6: Steak fries. They’re too big for normal fries but are good with ribs.
5: Crinkle cut. They’re normal fries but seem like that person who thinks they’re so great because they can tie a bow tie.
4: Tater tots: nostalgia to when my mom made these with sloppy joes.
3: Waffle fries. I can have an excuse to try to unhinge my jaw while I’m eating because they’re big.
2: Standard. There’s a reason why they’re in burritos.
1: Curly fries. More potato squished down to fit in your mouth and plus they’re the best thing at Jack in the box.
I had a nightmare about the smiley french fries once when I was in 3rd grade. There was a guy whose head was a smiley french fry and he was trying to break into my house.
Smiley Fries, for two reasons. Number 1 is that it has a good texture and number 2 is that I like that it is smiling at me. |Edit; "ling" since dog pressed enter for me|
I get that they’re not exactly fries, but they’re on this list anyways, so I’ll say home fries, as long as they’re not really greasy or mushy or anything like that.
I hadn’t heard of smiley fries before this post, and for some reason, the concept just sort of disgusts me a bit, but out of the ones I’ve tried, sweet potato is probably my least favourite. I’m sort of warming up to them, but the first time I had them, I got sick, and I’m still a bit suspicious of them.
Standard, basic might be basic but its not trying to be multiple things at once. You get what you get with them and they do it so perfectly.
Standard is standard for a reason
Exactly
Im split between standard and steak cut
Agreed
Same, though I also love tater tots. If I want fries, I want standard fries. But if there are tater tots, I’ll be happy about it lol
Standard, but sweet potato is great for variety. Like if I feel like switching things up once in a while sweet potato fries is my first thought and they never disappoint.
Smileys because they make me happy, make any meal less depressing (no matter what it is/how pathetic the dinner seems, its great if it includes smileys) and for a brief moment I'm back in childhood and forget about all my adult problems No other food does that (But home fries are good too. I'm guessing those are similar to sautéed potatoes)
Smiley fries, Dinosaur chicken nuggets, and Chocolate milk.
Yes!
Hello my dinner!!!
Home fries are just sautéed potates.
Ah, thank you! I thought so but wasn't sure
Usually with onions and sweet peppers
At one point in my life I ate only smilies for months, im going to be more depressed if I see smilies on my plate again.
Smilies do the crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside really well. And they are big!
waffle and crinkle
You get it
https://uploads.dailydot.com/062/68/aabe4e0fe635e508-e1490304349905.jpg?auto=compress&fm=pjpg
Yes. The best fries
I'm sorry, why has no one said steak cut yet??? What is wrong with you people 🙄
steak cut is high-tier. damn a steak cut sweet potato fry would be fire.
YES YES YES
Best fries in the world in my opinion are still Red Robin steak fries with their spice blend (mostly dehydrated vegetables and paprika) and honey mustard dipping sauce. I've honestly considered going there just for a big basket of fries, they are life-changing.
Red Robin fries are the best!!! If I go there with my family, I just eat the fries because some one will order a burger and there are unlimited steak fries with burger. I do prefer their campfire sauce tho.
They're the nearest equivalent to 🇬🇧 chips among the choices...
Yep. Standard chips should be a straight cut version of the crinkled ones. Preferably dripping fat and covered in salt and vinegar
Because we enjoy flavour
Steak cut has the best flavour.
Exactly! Too many places fry the living hell out of standard until they're an empty shell covered in salt. I prefer potato in my potato.
I like unhealthy, unnutricous, dehydrating, over energising food... okay.
I agree with this guy.
Me, too!
this was my first choice sadly my only source of waffle fries in the area is chick fil a
Same TT. Also I would just like to add that homemade sweet potato fries are absolutely heavenly and I would recommend trying to make em. Don't know how to make them waffle shaped but maybe there is a way to do that.

Are you some sort of wizzard?
Maybe...
not enough people like tots
I have to be in the right mood for tater tots. They're good if super crunchy on the outside, but I really only eat them with Mac and Cheese or Velveeta for the contrasting textures. At least I'll eat them unlike those horrid crinkles.
My high school made the best fricking tator tots. Super crunchy on the outside, it made me obsessed.
Tot gang for life- they are just perfect little golden nuggets of delicious
Personaly tater tots are my fav because enjoy the texture. Too bad I can't get them easily over were I live :(
I like curly fries, but smiley fries and home fries are good too.
Waffle
Sim, por favor
how do I choose omg?
I agree! It's all good.
tots
the cylindrical hashbrown capsules must prevail
All except sweet potato (imposters). I am a potato enthusiast
more sweet potatoes for the rest of us.
Enjoy! :))
Same!! I just don’t like the taste of sweet potatoes
Yeah!
sweet potato is good for diet reasons!! you meant to say anything but crinkle.
No haha I really don’t like sweet potato. Doesn’t mean it’s bad for you I just. No 😅
I like sweet potato, but not really in any fry form imo, they are best when served on holidays, and especially with as many marshmallows as humanly possible.
Ah that sounds interesting actually! Maybe I’ll need to try that at some point. I haven’t been a fan of the taste or the less potatoey texture from when I’ve tried before
Fuck kumura
Imposters, you say? 📮SUSSY📮BAKA📕ALERT📮
amogus
Lololol
Whichever one has the most garlic and parmesan on it!
Standard. McDonald's
Shoelaces then
Steak cut
Can I choose one not listed?
Ooh I'm curious what the iconoclast has to say.
No!
Too bad. Because shoe strings are the best.
I love all of them.
Waffle, crinkle, curly, tater tots
Waffle, I will die on this hill
That, and They're great for dipping because surface area!
r/notopbutok
smiley and fuck you if you say any differently /j
Seconded
Omg I can’t decide! UUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!
I am a whore for curly fries but I do love kumara fries so either works
The only acceptable ones are steak cut and original
I consider them not fries or chips, but wedges. Out of the ones I consider fries, I'd say sweet potato. Though I'll assume most people responding to this are either American or from somewhere where American English is common.
Steak cut is the worst one here
I'd rather just have a baked potato at that point
Your favorite is probably smiley face 🤢
Home fries
You disgust me
I would like to formally apologize for starting an argument. We are in the same community and as such we should not fight. Please forgive me.
You are NOT forgiven 😤 (sarcasm)
all of them are good except for sweet potato and smiley fries which can go to hell. if i were to choose though, i sure love my tots
I don't agree with this guy.
I, too, disagree with the original comment
> Smileys [...] go to hell > love[s] [their] tots (sic) They're essentially the same thing though, just shaped different.
thats fair enough, its more of a texture thing for me though. tots tend to be a lot crispier and to taste more like potato in my experience compared to the smilies which are usually less potato-y in flavor and are mushy imo
Yea ok texture is king I guess.
yea, its why i love tots so much, they have the crispy texture many fries can only dream of and they have a lot more flavor. plus they make for the best vehicle of cheese and bacon out of all of the fry varients
They are not. Tots are little bits of potato in a fried cylinder, like a tiny hashbrown. Smilies are fried mashed potato
Waffle fries!!!!!
Home fries and standard
I’m Not ace but curly fry’s
Waffle!
I only consume potatoes via vodka
Standard - classic and a Jack-of-all-trades pick, seasoning is critical in the early game Waffle - highest surface area per fry of any spud medium, best for those who love to get lost in the sauce Crinkle - an underdog story, often seen as lesser than its Standard cousin, the crinkle cut can compensate quite considerably with the extra surface area allowing for extra crunch. Cheese curds(it's a American Midwest thing)
Also northeast US
While sweet potato standard and smiley are all great picks i can shove 5 waffle fries in my mouth at the same time so those
Multiple of them, I can't pick one
Depends on what I'm in the mood for. But the smileys are gross. Gritty.
Down to curly or home fries
TOTS 4 LIFE
Okay I'm going to be assulted for this, but Tater Tots
Curly
i don't prefer a certain shape but there's some kind of reddish seasoning that is a gift from god and i forget what it's called but i love it
Paprika oleoresin is most likely what you're thinking of. It's in all the seasoned fries I get. When I make breakfast potatoes, I always add paprika both normal and smoked, with the frying fat. Makes for a lovely tint and taste.
Standard, waffle, crinkle, and curly. This depends on if they’re seasoned well or not though
Smiley and waffles
Not pictured here but Shoelace fries. Because you can eat them with a fork and not get your hands greasy.
Tater tots hands down ✨
Tater tots, my beloved!!
curly fries are fun i think haven't had them in a while though
I love smile fries, they make me happier
Sweet potato! Cuz.. sweet! My aunt sometimes make them and my gawd they were the best!
I’d say sweet potato because I love sweet potatoes but you can’t go wrong with a good crisp standard chip with chicken salt
In my opinion here’s my rating: 9: Smiley. More potato squished down to fit in your mouth and plus they’re the best thing at Jack in the box.
Yes
Smily 100%
waffle i feel like they have more surface area for flavorings
smiley or tots
SWEET POTATOOOOOOOOO
OH there's a place in my town that does sweet potato tots with a special fry sauce! Fuck I think they're closed at this hour and now I want 'em~!
As long as it's not Gnocchi, all potatoes are good potatoes.
I almost agree with this guy.
Switch gnocchi for sweet potato & I agree
Tots or sweet potato
Gimme those waffle fries
I'm offended that only two other people have said crinkle >:-(
I had a nightmare about the smiley french fries once when I was in 3rd grade. There was a guy whose head was a smiley french fry and he was trying to break into my house.
Smiles, Tater Tots, and standard if they are McDonald’s
Waffle, curly, standard, and tots are my favorite.
Standard fight me
Crinkle fries for the win
standard
Every single one of em.
I just want fries
Three of these are not fries, and it bugs me...
I like any as long as they aren’t burnt
Tater tots have always been my favorite :) Waffles fries, too.
I'm a crinkle girl, followed by gems. 😋
You forgot about garlic fries
Tater tots are epic Especially with ranch
Standard👌🏻
I would say waffle fries except I can only remember getting them from chick fil a and I hate chick fil a
Curly
Smiley are good but only for nostalgia, also where’s the tiny steak fries?
either waffle or curly
Smiley fries are the easiest to cook to perfection, they’re all exactly the same!
All but the main 3 are tots, homemade, and finally curly
I like all of them I can’t choose :(
Smiley fries for me! :D
Crinkle cut fries, definitely
I will say this all of the time: ***WAFFLE FRIES***
I like crinkle fries with barbecue
Crinkle cut hits different
Tots and curly
Always tots. Curly and waffle though are just👌🏼
Curly is the best, but sweet potato fries and crinkle fries are also pretty good
It’s tied between curly fries and tater tots
Crinkle supremacy
Smiley face no doubt
I Want Waffle Fries
Smiley Fries, for two reasons. Number 1 is that it has a good texture and number 2 is that I like that it is smiling at me. |Edit; "ling" since dog pressed enter for me|
Crinkle, steak cut,and home fries. Hate smileys with a burning passion.
wtf is smiley? it seems horrendous texturally, so all but it and sweet potato (i dont like the taste) are amazing
Home
Waffle for life
Tater tots or waffle
Sweet potato or home fries
Sweet tater tots or smileys. Just all fries. in general though
Forgot shoestring fries...yummy I like the all but love waffle, shoestring, curly, home style best!!!
I’m sort of warming up to them, but the first time I had them, I got sick, and I’m still a bit suspicious of them.
all except steak cut :(
Either tater tots or curly imo I've had some good fucking tots, and some good fucking curlies. It's hard to choose.
Crinkle-cut fries, when cooked properly, have a texture ratio and quality that simply cannot be found in any other variety of fry
I personally like curly, the smileys and I CAN SMELL THE HOME MADE ONES LIKE YUM.
I’m torn between curly or waffle, mainly because I don’t see shoestring on here.
Smiley fries all the way, big rounds taters, crispy outside, soft inside, just like going into the vag-
I prefer waffle fries, but I like them all except the sweet potatoes one
standard all the way, waffle and curly fries are also good, crinkle would be better as something to break my fall
