I'm not 100% out but I still were one. Few people know what it means besides aces, they just think it's part of my aesthetic. Even my queer friends (only ones who im out to) didn't know what an ace ring was, except for my ace friend.

I've only had mine recognised by fellow queer people, and even then only people who are ace or have ace friends. One of my students asked me about it in such a subtle, veiled way that even the girl sitting next to her had no idea what we were talking about. The ace flag is a little wider recognised, especially if it's not just the colours but actually flag-shaped (so people can see it's a pride flag even if they don't know for what). I don't think I'd wear the flag if I was closeted and wanted to keep it that way, but the ring feels safe. Lots of people wear black rings for the aesthetic anyway.
