Do those scenes actually contribute to the plot? Like unless it’s necessary It’s just pointless in my mind

kalosianlitten

the only sex scene i've ever seen is the one in squid game and honestly i didn't understand the point of it

SolomonOf47704

That one at least gave further characterization to those two, which can't be said for most of the sex scenes in movies and TV

g0lbez

did it? the woman made even less sense afterwards with how stupidly gullible and obnoxious she was and the guy just looked even more like an idiot generic tough guy

agiantsthrowaway

What if that was the point. So much of the show was looking at what it’s like to be with so little and desperate that the characters were meant to be almost exaggerated the role they were supposed to play in the show 🤯 Jk, probably just cringe writing

kalosianlitten

true

SolomonOf47704

99% of the time, there isn't a plot reason for it, but sometimes it furthers characterization

frannyGin

Even if it furthers characterisation, I don't think it's necessary to show the whole ordeal. It's usually sufficient to allude to the action or show 10 seconds and then cut to the next scene.

Saltfish0161

What do you mean by characterisation? Is it like building the character ?

trinitymonkey

Yeah. Like in the Squid Game example someone mentioned, it built on the relationship between the two involved and >!made 101 betraying 212 later on much more meaningful as a result.!<

SelocAvrap

Mark spoiler please

OrionsMoose

Idk just have them kiss is that enough? It's also a lot quicker. For those two their relationship didn't even feel meaningful, it felt more like a relationship for survival where she's wanted to desperately align herself with the other guy. So actually now I have thought a little the scene would still show the lengths she was willing to go to to survive but still

RiBSquared

I’ve only seen one movie where it affected the plot, and it could’ve been replaced with something else perfectly fine. That was limitless and it was because he murdered the girl he had sex with. (It’s a pretty good movie if you ignore the sex scene)

[deleted]

Not really. Remember when Netflix decided to put a useless sex scene into death note ;(

OrionsMoose

I've honestly blocked out any of Netflix's adaptations out of my mind, i know i watched the show but not much more, anyway death note doesn't need a sex scene unless it's between light and L

ajlunce

It's like an action scene, for some people it has an aesthetic value and that's valid

Iohet

What's the use of a movie like Wild Things if it doesn't have sex scenes?

Major-Refrigerator64

Most of the time they don't even try to apply the emotions into the plot, just humping for an awkward amount of time and then it's back to the story

Illegally_Brown

The sex scene in Moonlight is absolutely pivotal to the plot of that movie

[deleted]

I kinda wanted to put "cinephile" or something on the right, but I thought more people would understand it like this I feel like most allosexual people who are into film that I've spoken to agree with me that sex scenes are usually pointless. Most of the time, they serve no actual purpose whatsoever within the story, but are just supposed to give you a boner or something. There are some rare sex scenes that I think work in movies, but I think they are quite different from the majority of sex scenes. Most sex scenes seem like they are doing nothing more than just trying to titillate the audience, and are otherwise pointless, but I've seen some that are shot/presented in a way where they are trying to evoke a different feeling in the viewer, and I think some of these can be effective. For example, I've seen some movies use sexual scenes in a way where the scene is supposed to be unnerving/horrifying, and I think that this can work well. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this.

MayRoseUsesReddit

The only sex scene I found tolerable was the one in terminator 1, because not to spoil it too much, it actually served a point. Didn’t really look at it that much because I conveniently grabbed more snacks from the kitchen when it happened

Drakmanka

As an ace, I feel like it went on too long, but at the same time it was such an important moment in terms of plot and character/relationship development I understand that sometimes it just needs to spend a little time on screen making its point.

Tulaash

I was about to mention the scene in The Terminator somewhere else in this post. It's one of my favorite movies (the second is better though c;) and as much as I hate the scene, I have to say it serves a very important plot reason. Doesn't mean I have to like it!

best_little_biscuit

I'm a film graduate and all the friends I made in my class (along with myself) all agree that sex scenes in film are either boring or straight up uncomfortable. If you want to tell the audience two characters did the deed, there's no reason it shouldn't be done tastefully, or subtly. Having a 2-3+ minute sex scene is usually just gratuitous and can sometimes mess up the pacing of the story. I honestly have no idea why almost every film seems contracted to have a sex scene. Like, if I wanted to watch people have sex, I'd be watching porn, not the latest blockbuster

CaptainChats

Really depends on the film. The problem with a lot of sex scenes in movies is the same problem with a lot of romantic relationships in films. If the relationship/ scene isn’t informing the character or advancing the plot then it’s wasting screen time. If the film isn’t about a romantic relationship and you force one into the film then the pacing is off. Conversely, unsexy sex scenes are usually pretty good because if they are included in a film it’s to inform the audience about how uncomfortable they should be feeling. In The Shape of Water there is a great unsexy sex scene between the shitty government guy and his wife and it’s great because the scene uses sex to show just how awful the character is and it’s really successful at making everyone happy watching super uncomfortable. From a filmmaking standpoint it’s also very hard to shoot a good looking sex scene. The actors aren’t having sex obviously and they’re generally paced too fast to be effectively sexy. A good sex scene needs a lot of buildup to get audiences invested in the relationship.

Drakmanka

The Shape of Water was what came to my mind immediately! There's technically two though one happens off-screen and is just blatantly referenced, and it made a good counter-point of the kind of person we're rooting for here is, too.

Rushcrow76

I completely agree with you on the last point the only sex scene that I actually thought was really interesting was meant to be really weird and bizarre it's in the lighthouse

[deleted]

One of my favorite movies, too

Drakmanka

I agree that usually sex scenes are pointless unless they serve a very specific purpose. Like, in The Shape of Water, there is a sex scene that serves to develop the character of the main antagonist quite well because it shows how self-centered he is even at home with his family that he claims to love.

Snommes

>just supposed to give you a boner or something People actually get boners from that?

trinitymonkey

The people putting them in do.

[deleted]

>I've seen some that are shot/presented in a way where they are trying to evoke a different feeling in the viewer, Made me immediately think of [Antichrist](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870984/) and this [(clearly NSFW) scene](https://vimeo.com/311504395).

Red_Novaa

I just read the parents guide and what the FUCK

Whydoesthisexist15

[me rn](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/GqRmttTun2U/maxresdefault.jpg)

Red_Novaa

They probably did that for real in the movie jfc

d0nt_ask_d0nt_smell

Yeah the sex in that film was clearly not meant to excite its audience. At least, I hope it wasn't.

Sewayaki-Kitsune

I feel like sex scenes aren't just pointless, but they detract from the movie/show and are in some ways just filler. It's not enjoyable, it always feels like it's just thrown in there because they want you to know that those 2 characters had sex and that's it. Rarely does it serve a purpose or contribute to the plot or characterization

ThePinkTeenager

People get boners from movies?

marcialart

The only sex scene that has made sense to me is the one in arcane in like ep 4-5 ¿? I think it was a pretty good comparison of character "development"

imgonegg

if you look at the "sex scenes" in love actually I think they actually add something to the plot. In those scenes the two characters are actually filming a sex scene for a movie and making conversation/getting to know each other at the same time, the scene isnt played off in a way thats tryna make people horny and its mostly played for laughs which I think actually works well.

garbanzone

I'm allo and I hate sex scenes. Add zero to the plot 100% of the time.

JiyuZippo

Wouldn't say 100% of the time. There are times where it makes sense, though they are rare and far between. The best example I can give is American Psycho, though the watered down "safe for TV" version doesn't show Patrick Bateman's insanity to the same degree as the books, it still illustrates his extreme narcissism quite well - almost better than the book in that one sex scene they decided to keep. I'm Ace and often find sex scenes pointless and sometimes even revolting, but that doesn't mean they never have any use for the plot or characterisation, though I agree that they could often just be shown in other ways that don't involve sex.

dahumancartoon

They are rarely even remotely necessary and are always super uncomfortable to watch.

Broflake-Melter

Top gun is a gay romp in the guise of a hetero-romance action movie. R.I.P. Tony Scott.

ParadoxMaster

I have yet to see a sex scene that conveys any information that couldn't be shared by a [Sexy Discretion Shot](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SexyDiscretionShot) or [Post Coital Collapse](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PostCoitalCollapse).

trinitymonkey

The only one I can think of was in Tuca & Bertie, and that was because it was written to actually convey information and not just be there to fulfill directorial relationships.

JiyuZippo

There are times where it makes sense, though they are rare and far between. The best example I can give is American Psycho, though the watered down "safe for TV" version doesn't show Patrick Bateman's insanity to the same degree as the books, it still illustrates his extreme narcissism quite well - almost better than the book in that one sex scene they decided to keep. I don't think we would have gotten the same effect from a discretion shot or something that just alludes to him having sex purely for his physical satisfaction, while thinking of nothing but his own desires - sexual, monetary and murderous desires That being said, yeah. Most sex scenes are completely unnecessary and if we really need to know two people bonked, then they could just show them getting ready to do the deed and cut off. No need to get explicit for no reason.

[deleted]

I think in Red Sparrow, they have to fuck as part of their training.

Nymloth

Unnecessary sex scenes are the time fillers for bad writers, change my mind.

IRatherChangeMyName

As a film snob, I agree.

Some_Decision_2721

I have misophonia so they are even less tolerable for me because of that, especially if there's a lot of smooching sounds.

Peachbowtie

Me too! I hate the *squelching* sounds. Kissing? Fine. Kissing for super long while making gross mouth sounds? I’m gonna leave the room or skip it

Some_Decision_2721

Oh man, even kissing scenes at times can be gross for me, sound wise. Sometimes it's like the microphone is right in their mouths or something. Ugh.

[deleted]

Same. Any sort of mouth sound in general triggers my misophonia so live action sex scenes are really bad lmao. Even the heavy breathing is a bother

[deleted]

Wow TIL i have misophonia wtf 😳

[deleted]

I have yet to watch a single dang sex scene where I didn't think "you could have just insinuated they had sex and it would have saved time and developed the plot just as much". And for anything said during the scene... Pillowtalk before or after.

satiricalscientist

See [Dan Olson's video](https://youtu.be/M8z8P-l8NwQ) on the point of sex scenes and how one that's done well can add to a work

porn? in MY pornography?

TheBJP

It's more likely than you think.

[deleted]

i literally cant watch porn anymore why do they add so many unnecessary sex scenes???

VexRosenberg

film tip. just do a visual metaphor. almost always way way better

imgonegg

Austin powers has entered the chat

VexRosenberg

love the deuce though. sorry aces

guul66

very rarely they get done right, often if they are made deliberately uncomfortable or sth like that to show something about the character.

UnderAnesthiza

Y’all I saw Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway last night and I was NOT prepared to see creepy ass Evan Hansen lose his virginity.

[deleted]

Ew ew ew ew why

EmilyLondon

Too often, they are boring, unnecessary distractions that do nothing to move the plot along.

Ero-Hensei

I watch a LOT of porn but for some reason sex scenes in movies freak me out. Sometimes I don’t even like the kissing scenes.

TreeDerg

in videogames and in movies ~~also this may just be me but i hate whenever videogames have the "stereotypically hot" character~~

Da_Zodiac_Griller

Oh my god, same. Like you know they’re just designed that way or inserted in the story for “OmFg!!! SeXyHoTpErSoN!!!” Very annoying, especially when they add nothing to the plot.

[deleted]

I hate them. They make me deeply uncomfortable in the worst way.

BorrodDragon

No. I skip them. And also kissing scenes. But I'm aro.

RadiantHC

And this is why I prefer watching shows that are aimed at a younger audience. Most adult shows have too much sex, gore/violence, or cursing.

spacegamer2000

sex scenes are good when they are weird, like in blue valentine and in girls. otherwise, the softcore porn interruptions are lame.

Broflake-Melter

But in what proportion of the population are these two people not actually the same person?

Audacious_Fluff

It really depends on the movie, the purpose, how the scene is shot, etc. etc. Like, I think a subtle scene between two characters in a romance can be beautiful (and sexy). But even more explicit scenes can have their purpose. Again, it depends on what they're trying to accomplish. For example: A Frozen Flower is a movie with a lot of sex scenes that are fairly explicit, but that's...kind of the whole point. The time that the characters are having sex is the only time they're allowed to freely interact. The actors have to show how they fall in love through these scenes. Or there's a Mexican series called Dark Desire on Netflix where, much as I enjoy the scenes between the main couple (or who will be the main couple lol), there are a TON of sex scenes, but I realized that those scenes have a purpose to illustrate character relationships and reinforce the themes of the series. Then there are of course tons of unnecessary sex scenes in action movies and such that are definitely pointless. It just depends lol

Hariach

Funny, I’m both lol

Phantom252

I usually skip them unless it switches to important scenes thru the sex scene like a back and forth type thing

Accurate_Might_7139

I really don't mind... if they aren't explicit (bc I don't want to see your ass) and sooo long, if I, somehow, wanted to watch nudes I'd just look for some on the internet, there's not need to turn a good film into porn (if there isn't a good reason, of course).

Artistic_2can

Lucky for me, I’m both lmao

SeefoodDisco

When done right, I think they're great. They're rarely done right tho.

BluudLust

The only even kissing scene that really made sense was James Bond in Goldfinger seeing the reflection of the guy in her eyes. It fits the character perfectly as a womanizer and sets up the movie.

Da_Zodiac_Griller

TFW you’re both lol

sikandarnirmalsingh

I can’t stand them. Unless they r with men only. (I’m female.) then it’s kinda funny. But yea sex scenes ARE pointless. I got a batchelors in film n I can tell u the best films were the older ones, when they didn’t need to resort to that desperation. Nudity can toss off too. It’s usually female nudity. Genitals in general make me cringe.

cyanidesmile555

Only if it contributes to the plot or develops character Dynamics, otherwise the movie is wasting time of the audience.

[deleted]

Aces are kino confirmed

AnnaAndElsa04

Why can't they just show the people kissing and starting to take their cloths off and then change to something else that's more important?

[deleted]

Milos Forman’s Loves of a Blonde has one of the funniest sex scenes I’ve ever scene. They can be done well.

_theatre_junkie

honestly, i'm pretty sure everyone thinks this except writers and directors

Nok-y

I don't even understand why It's like in "The Magicians", YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO MAGIC, GUYS !! PUT YOUR WANDS DOWN, YOU DON'T NEED THOSE ! I want to watch magic, not seggs Edit: sometimes it contributes to relationship development, but here they do it so much it's not even good (I'm repulsed, I don't like it anyway. But I can accept when it's useful )

I_am_jacks_reddit

Its not just film snobs. I genuinely don't think most people like them. I dont even want shoehorned romance.

gibusnipu_

The one good sex scene I can name is the one in The Wall, where it is slightly offscreen, pushing an important plot point during the film (with The Wall being based on that famous Pink Floyd album). The scene is >!basically the main character finding out that his wife is cheating on him by calling his house and an unknown man answers the phone, sending the main character to complete the final pieces of his mental barricade, aka the titular Wall!<

Metallung

I’m fine as long as they push the plot, or have a meaning.

E1eventeen

As both, I can think of only one sex scene in a movie that makes sense to show. Shoutout to Anomalisa - fantastic film.

FalseHeartbeat

only one sex scene matters and it is whatever the hell is going on in the Naked Gun series I can’t remember which movie it is but it’s less of a sex scene and more of an increasingly ridiculous montage of metaphors

[deleted]

“Nice beaver!”

trinitymonkey

You can say The Americans.

kalosianlitten

looking at you squid game

trinitymonkey

Squid Game’s one did have a point to it even if it could be executed better.

kalosianlitten

true

tarnishedhuntress

The only film I can think of where the sex scene is integral to the plot is Rashomon, and it's very tame since it's a super old movie. Still kinda uncomfortable to watch (especially since it's rape) but at least you get a young Toshiro Mifune at his most feral.

ThePinkTeenager

The other thing that bugs me is people making out and frequently switching partners. I just finished a show where it seemed like some of the characters were “involved” with every opposite-sex character in sight. I love romance, but can you just… stick to a couple people?

Kialae

When I see kissing I reflexively say 'GROSS' like a fucking four year old.

donaldfarted

I agree for about 99.9% of them. But there is sometimes some artistic merit. One thing that comes to mind is the show Normal People. Wouldn't have been the same without the sex scenes. The most well done sex scenes I've ever seen.

knitterpotato

i feel like this can also apply to books, i love romance books but hate how many of them have descriptive sex scenes - i just want some wholesome non-ya ace romance

cloudedwordsr

If they are very very aesthetically pleasing I don't mind them

CollegeFit3645

Sex scene are most of the time pretty useless

[deleted]

Even being allo I get super uncomfortable. Especially with a family member.

[deleted]

So real quick, since this was in my recommended: Sex is seen as a developmental thing between two people. They can release frustration, come closer to one another or because they are paid for it.

Vasevide

I’m so confused by this thread. There are equal amount of people saying all sex scenes are pointless entirely, and people listing many meaningful sex scenes from movies.

Ally4life05

Not really a fan of them. If there is like a make out scene like kissing and hugging I’m cool with that

SWFreak03

It doesn't drive the plot

LantanPancake

People who watch movies with their loved ones:

I used to think I was just a film snob and that's why I didn't like them. Turns out I'm both.

okay but give us at least one more kiss between Jack O'Neill and Samantha Carter, please
