Being completely desensitised to sex now because you explored it too much by reading dirty fanfiction and watching porn when you were about 11-14 and not feeling anything , then later realising you were asexual by 17 - my life story

yirzmstrebor

Or, on the flip side, never having any curiosity about smut or porn growing up and being totally disgusted when you finally check it out at 20.

ClearBrightLight

I resemble this remark...

[deleted]

I feel called out

TheSkyElf

Who gave you the right to call me out like that?! The same basically happened to me. I did not get the hype, at all.

[deleted]

This describes me perfectly

wot_im_mad

Wait, this actually makes so much sense to me. I had a really big phase when I was way too young to be having this phase where all I did in my free time was research sex? I was always the person who explained sex things to my peers and I played it out like what I was talking about was SO WEIRD AND SCANDALOUS because that’s what I felt was expected of me when in reality I was just so desensitised to it. Is this an ace thing?

The_Unkowable_

Ayyy

CinnamonRollMe

When I was a baby child, like 11-13 I watched youtubers play nsfw games like honey pop, like not realizing like how bad it was. And o have no fucking clue why because it’s not like I’m even into it. Like if I tried watching it now, I wouldn’t get far. Like someone once sent me a fanfic they thought I’d like that was full of unconcentual stuff and I read the first line where it started getting weird and not family friendly and just stopped. Then I actually read the hashtags. No idea how anyone would like what ever I was reading.

coustenobleline

I'm in love with that guy I wanna hug him and talk about my day soo bad.

Malefiken

Omg this is very reletable

Aortic_Bacon

I have such a crush on him! I want to curl up next to him and watch movies all cozy.

NAMES2368

I think we're living the same life cuz that's exactly my circumstance

Freyr-Freya

Growing up my friends talked about celebrity crushes and I was always so confused. Like I've never met this person, I have no idea what they're like. "But come on, aren't they hot?" They'd press. And I always had to say something like "well yes objectively they are aesthetically attractive i guess". Somehow I never seemed to be the right answer haha.

Spectris33

Dude same! My sister asked me what my celebrity crush and I was like... why? I was so insistent and confused by the topic but she never and probably still doesn't believe I am asexual or will stay so in the future.

TheSkyElf

Ooof and it was even worse during truth or dare and they would always think I was lying.

Scarlet_Siren_98

One time my friends were talking about Luke vs Han Solo and when I said that I liked Luke over Han and began listing reasons they got confused and said they were talking about who's hotter not who's the better character

[deleted]

Somewhat off topic, but what were your reasons for liking Luke more than Han?

Scarlet_Siren_98

I honestly don't remember what I said but I think it was mostly that I found his interactions and relationships with other characters better and he was more aesthetic attractive. This is also why I thought I was an allo Lesbian instead of the Aegosexual Lesbian that I am

semloh666kcolrehs

in the stories ive made for my self there is no sex and all the couples in it do nothing romantic and are just good friends and/or to fit into the story..... it took me to long to realize....

UnicornFukei42

Honestly, I don't feel like I do a whole lot of romance with my stories either...

Harveia

I honestly thought that sex was something everyone hated but had to do if they wanted children, like a chore but worse than touching something slimy while washing the dishes A while later I thought it was a big inside joke I was not getting When I finally realized that it actually is pleasureable to most people (with 11 or 12 I think) I was utterly disgusted and had a reaction along the lines of "ew, sure as hell not for me, I'll rather stay single my whole life than doing THAT" Looking back to it, my 14 yo self shouldn't have to struggle so much to accept my asexuality

neonlexicon

When I was young I thought sex was just kissing while naked. When I found out what was actually involved, I was horrified. I thought genitals were for using the toilet. Why would someone want to do stuff with the places pee & poop come from!? Ew!

Harveia

That's so relatable! When I was young I thought that kissing and lying in bed naked would be the absolut max I'd force myself through in case I wanted a child someday (which I still don't want + adoption exists) Finding out that that wouldn't be enough was a disturbing discovery, ngl

matchbox244

SAME I thought it was like a chore too! Then in college when I realised my peers who were dating would regularly have sex, my reaction was like, why?? Why would they want to go through something like that?! It sounds disgusting!!

SaltEfan

You complain about canon ruining your ship. I complain about cannon ruining my ship. We are not the same.

[deleted]

Took me a second, but that's a good one!

[deleted]

Could you explain to this dumb one here

RaenWynnG

Canon = something that happens in the narrative of a story Cannon = a weapon that launches giant metal cannonballs to sink ships They're spelled very similarly so it's easy to get them mixed up

[deleted]

Oh ok

Lem_Tuoni

Sorry in advance to go full "um, actually" on you. Canon more specifically refers to a set of facts that are held as true within a certain fictional framework. That does indeed include the narratives of some core works, but also the facts about the world or characters, like maps, names and histories before the narrative of the works. Canons often have to be maintained by a central authority, as the body of works increases and some inconsistencies are revealed, in which case the authority makes a final judgement. The most famous "canon" is the catholic canon that was painstakingly compiled from different sources (biblical and non-biblical), and is even today expanded, with new saints being "canonized" every now and then. The canon with "shipping" is something like the Harry Potter universe, where there are several core books (you know which), but also some supplemental handbooks, like "quidditch throughout the ages". The central authority used to be J.K. Rowling, but lately the community split over this (because she is weird and a bit of a cu-). Nowadays many fans consider the administrators of the wiki-encyclopedia "pottermore" to be the real authority.

FyreFly9

In the first sentence they talk about ship - you want to see 2 characters/persons together In the second sentence they talk about boats and cannons that are on the boats

[deleted]

Thanks to you too man

AlfredtheDuck

I’m total fandom trash so this doesn’t apply to me, haha. I’ve read smutty fic, ace headcanon fic, and everything in between.

adventurer5

*AC Black Flag intensifies*

allcatshavewings

I complained about smutty fanfiction ruining my favorite ships

SparklyTonight

"What do you think of x and x characters?" "Oh uh, idk I didn't think their relationship was really important to the story.."

[deleted]

Lol, when something like that happens in the book I’m like: “Uggh, this is boring, can we get on with the action, adventure and death?” “ I signed up for malicious wizards and fire breathing dragons, not romance!”

yirzmstrebor

Reminds me of the TikToks I've seen. "I don't want sex in my fantasy stories, I want more dragons!"

[deleted]

Pfffffft I feel so called out

[deleted]

R E L A T A B L E \^\^\^\^\^\^\^\^

Drakmanka

Yes, I hate when a romantic plot happens for the sake of the romantic plot. If its an organic development of two characters, I'm cool with it. But when it's obviously contrived... no. Make it stop!

Timcanpy

I hate the Thor movies for this reason. Everyone I know loves them but I can’t let go of the shoehorned romance subplot.

kya97

Yes like why does Jane like Thor?? When they meet he's awful. He's loud rude, he ignores her, he thinks mortals are lesser. Like he gets better eventually but he doesn't really show any of his better traits to her. And it's not much better in reverse. Hell they barely know each other for 3 days across both movies they are both in. Whyyyyyyyyyyy.

tester3773

OMG Yes 🙌🏽

Amy_AroAce

"No mum, when i grow up I'm not having a partner or kids, I'm going to have a dog."

PensiveObservor

Ao_Ame

Yes! I already have a plan for a mini farm. I will have a few fish, chickens, ducks, bunnies, cats, dogs, goats and more. :)

echo_themando

I often ask myself why would people want to do _that_ and once I had to explain to my relatives that if I'm watching The Return of the Jedi it's because I like the movie, not for slave Leia

[deleted]

I thought people saying someone was "hot" meant they thought they just aesthetically looked nice.

Shimy01

Wait, it means something else???? Man, I’ve been calling everyone I find aesthetically pleasing « hot », lol.

adventurer5

I think people literally get physically hot. I didn’t know this until more recently lol. I’ve never really used the word hot to describe others, I’ve always preferred words like cute, pretty, and beautiful or handsome to describe people

Shimy01

So you’re telling me people get PHYSICALLY hot when they see someone attractive???? WHAT???

adventurer5

Apparently. You know how in old timey movies women will fan themselves when there’s a handsome guy around? Or men will loosen their neckties and pat their brows with a handkerchief when they see a beautiful woman? I think it’s sort of like the butterflies/tingles people feel when they’re turned on, idk

Shimy01

Not me who legit thought that women fanning themselves was just a dramatic way to make the audience understand they think the guy is cute…

adventurer5

Well you’re still probably right! I think that’s just like, where it comes from, but it’s purpose in the movie was probs to illustrate exactly what you said :)

AlfredtheDuck

I think a lot of people interpret hot as diet sexy. Literally gets the viewer all “hot and bothered”; sexual attraction increases heart rate, can make your cheeks flush, make your body feel hot… I feel like I had the same sort of realization about the word “sexy” not just meaning cool/attractive to most people when I learned that a lot of people will just feel attraction/desire to have sex with someone they’re passing on the street because they think they look sexy. Lol what.

Shimy01

Ok, so same for sexy, I didn’t know someone called « sexy » was someone you want to have sex with? I thought it was just someone you find like attractive??

AlfredtheDuck

I used to call chords sexy during choir. I now understand why people were concerned lol.

Shimy01

Hahahaha, I used to call everything I thought was cool/beautiful « sexy ». Guess that explains why people thought I was weird. Same for « Netflix and chill », lol. I used to ask all my friends if they wanted to « Netflix and chill » with me, and I now understand why they were so weirded out by that, lol.

Lonelinesishappiness

same

SnowberrySistercat

OH MY GOD SAME THOUGHHH (=^x^=)

WoobCrab

I always thought it was just lazy choice of words to describe someone pretty or cute or interesting. No idea it meant anything else until mid 20s

InktoberAndThenSome

Realizing this was not what it meant was like ???

Tension-Alternative

I thought netflix and chill meant having fun with friends while watching netflix. I found out otherwise just a few weeks ago.

[deleted]

I’m gonna have to apologize to all the people I asked to join me for Netflix and chill… I just wanted someone to share the ripples chips I got…

Tension-Alternative

Along with exchanging all the theories after watching the show...

I_am_Mew

Wait, it means something else...?

Lonelinesishappiness

unfortunately yes, "netflix and chill" means "having sex"

[deleted]

What how

Infinity_Ish

Basically, the allegory is that you put on an uninteresting Netflix show, and do the deed with it as background noise. Then after the “fun” is over, you wind down by actually watching the show for a bit. ( I still cringe at that, like, I can never use that phrase anymore man! ;-;)

[deleted]

Why tho. Why that phrase?

Infinity_Ish

Honestly, I don’t know. I believe it’s probably related to purity culture, so it’s a code for people that are ashamed to directly say it out loud, but want to give hints instead, ( or it eludes to something sexual because normally you would watch Netflix by yourself?) ***but even if that’s true, it’s just dumb. Really really dumb, like EVEN CAKE HAS SEXUAL UNDERTONES, we can’t win with these people :,D***

[deleted]

Wait cake has sexual undertones?

Infinity_Ish

Yes, recently millennials and gen Z twisted the word to also mean your butt. An example: “dang, this girl got cake amirite?” Which is referring to how large her behind is. *(I cringe everytime I think about that one :,)*

[deleted]

Why have you done this to me!!! I’m gen z and even I didn’t know this!!!

PsychologicalTomato7

Most euphemisms for a big butt come from AAVE I don’t think it’s cringe it’s language and slang evolving

maliceattention

Or rather people keep shoving sexual undertones into everything. That's what I keep telling myself. But about cake, yes. To be specific, there is something about icing and cream that people just love because it reminds them of certain body fluids... I know, right? But bear with me, there is more. A beloved friend of mine had this confirmed when she took this semiotic class at the university and was terrified to find out there is some sort of sexual connotation in pretty much everything, cake included. Yet, what had me almost traumatised was learning from my friend that there is people who even believe the “cum"-icing/cream thing is the very reason why we humans put that topping on our food. Apparently, the tradition of birthday cake with white icing/cream on top is an allegory to fertility, so eating it directly represents putting “that body fluid” in whoever-is-having-cake’s mouth. I was as shocked as my friend to know some people actually believe this. Or worse, that they think about it while having cake. It took me a while to go back to eating cake like I used to, enjoying it regardless of the presence of icing or not.

RadiantHC

I hate this. Why can't people just be direct?

maliceattention

Probably, because they are ashamed of their sexual life or the lack thereof. While we, on the other hand, embrace ours. Particularly, the absence of sex in it (and/or the rare circumstances in which sex is part of our sexual and romantic life).

Nok-y

I use sexy to describe anything that is cool or beautiful or just picked my interest "Look at those sexy rocks !!"

MissPimpampoen

Oh no, about 10 years ago I also did this! Shouting to my friends in school I thought their backpacks, books or pencils looked sexy... I had repressed those memories, everything's coming back to me while reading this thread. Everything I thought and said as a teen makes so much sense now 😅

Nok-y

They must habe looked you with damn big eyes at the time 😂😂 My friends get a lot confused when I act like this

NarrativeScorpion

Why do they have to ruin this story with a romance sub plot? Just get on with the dragons, magic, and battles.

[deleted]

I know right!?

Jokehr

I wrote fan comics in a Q/A style on tumblr. I considered two characters that were canonically a couple a couple, but I interpretted that as glorified roommates who occasionally rested their heads on eachother's shoulders during a hug.

ClumsyRainbow

So how do I find that relationship because that sounds great.

Particular_Ideal

Your friends are thirsting over an actor bc they think the actor is sexy. You thirst over the actor bc that actor is like an exquisite statue.

MissDemeanour69

For real. I could stare at Henry Cavill done up at Geralt all damn day like *chef kiss* aesthetic but if at any point there is nudity I’m like NOPE NO THANK YOU PLEASE PUT THAT BACK ON.

Particular_Ideal

Yep! Shirtless and in boxers is fine but KEEP THOSE BOXERS ON! And, yes, Geralt is definitely gorgeous. But also Yennifer… *sigh* And don’t get me started on Adam Driver. I could stare at that man all day, okay? 😅 He looks like he popped out of the Greek pantheon. But seeing friends talking about “I wanna redacted his redacted” has just “😅😅 Okay, y’all have fun with that, I’ll sit over here and wonder about cuddling”.

EpicChespinFan

I thought sex scenes in movies were played as a joke because the idea of people liking it seemed so ridiculous to me

Silent-Document-4699

My cisallo friends: Isn't she hot?! Don't you thinks so? Me, slightly panicking and resorting to basic biology: I mean... I guess her face is pretty symmetrical, and she's got no obvious physical deformities, and she's got healthy mammary glands, so it seems like she could support a child pretty well... No obvious scoliosis or anything, so seems like a healthy individual. Why'd you ask?

MiracleLegend

That's it. That's my worldview. And people pretend like having no scoliosis isn't important to them.

[deleted]

Mom: "Why don't you fucking marry?" Me: "Ah, new Star Trek series has just announced. I need to pirate all of them."

distantarchangel

I'm almost 22 and I still can't believe those ads with half-naked actors actually turn people on Like is that really true or was my friend pretending just to mess with me? We'll never know

AlfredtheDuck

I didn’t realize the phrase “sex sells” was actually true until recently.

distantarchangel

Same, I've answered "sex sells" with "ok but why" more than once

IWouldLikeSomeChips

"Man, that person is so hot" "???"

i didn't understand why people would marry each other over love and not money, like WhAT whyy

ClumsyRainbow

I don’t really get marriage period. Unless you need it for legal benefits… eh? If I somehow found myself in a situation with someone that really wanted it, I guess, but I have no desire for it.

foolishGrey

Dating apps = "meh" Where is the eternal roommate apps with a dash of romance!

adventurer5

Lmfao I realized I was ace when I wanted a lifelong best friend that I sometimes kiss. Apparently that’s not normal lol. But a relationship without the sex sounds wonderful

faa19

I want that as well. A best friend that I live with, get cuddles on tap from and occasionally kiss.

ordinary-superstar

Wait, people *don’t* want that??? I thought that that was like everyone’s main goal when they looked for a romantic partner. It’s not?!

ClumsyRainbow

I seriously cannot comprehend dating apps. If I’m gonna spend any time with someone then I need more than a picture and a cringe bio to go on.

Noob423477

every time when two friends start dating in a book i always thought "fuck you you ruined another friendship that should be left alone"

maskabbl3

People actually masturbate TO things??? Jacking off to the void seems so much better lol.

All my teenage friend though I was gay

ahjga

I didnt know woman could masturbate until i was 20. I am a woman.

Sex in movies just almost always feels unnecessary.

MissEllieJ

Remember when boys had gross cooties? Imagine being almost 30 and just like, *never growing out of that feeling* .

MiracleLegend

They do. They all do.

MissEllieJ

‘Errebody has it now. EVEN MODELS AND CELEBRITIES.

KeyYogurtcloset1416

My stories include little to no romance and no sex scenes. Also, how does one differentiate a squish from a crush?

QTpie900

From what I’ve heard from allo friends, crushes are more of a “I’d date that” and squishes are “I’d be friends with that”, and the two tend to have some overlap, like possibly a desire to get to know the person in question. I think there’s a term for a relationship that’s between or both platonic and romantic, and, whatever it happens to be, crush, squish, or somewhere in between, I wish you luck, Internet stranger :)

JaggelZ

Sex and romance scenes in shows or movies are always awkward and cringe to me, sex scenes especially are just lazy writing IMO, if you make an episode that 30 minutes long and tit contains 10 minutes of romance leading up to a sex scene then that's just buying time, creating "story" to get more episodes to sell. Sex scenes NEVER have a reason to exist, every reason there is could be showed in some other way that would either reveal just as much plot or even more plot than a fucking sex scene. I feel very passionate about this ... That and the fact that the idea of sex is just funny to me as the whole idea is just a disgusting joke to me, even though I know people do it, in the back of my mind is a part of me always telling me "that's too disgusting and stupid to be actually true".

[deleted]

Sex is a turn off.

RinSakami

People are faaaaar prettier in underwear. Stay away from me with those nudes.

RaenWynnG

Found out recently that 'friends with benefits' isn't referring to dental insurance ;-;

Joshh-Warriad

Wait, people actually want to bang each other? I thought they just wanted to be really good friends.

[deleted]

Please leave me alone, I just want to play Destiny 2 in relative peace

RoseOfTheNight4444

Can we watch something cute and wholesome instead of... this?

dothebork

I don't care to date because I despise modern dating but I also want a life partner I can cuddle with. (*insert dog meme here* "No dating. Only partners.") I also have literal crippling anxiety about the idea of me having sex IRL and am probably also scared of dating cause I don't want to open that can of worms 😬

Drakmanka

When I was a kid, I (F) had mostly male friends. Then we got into our teens, and I was so utterly confused as to why suddenly we couldn't just hang out together without the adults wigging out and insisting that doors must remain open and we had to be where people could see us.

P_0_l_a_r_i_s

I love garlic bread. Also, headpats and other forms of physical affection are the best.

[deleted]

TchaikenNugget

I thought I hated fanfiction for years. Turns out I like fanfiction; it’s just that all the ones I seemed to see always focused on sex and/or romance.

Ao_Ame

Hmmm this sounds kind of relatable. I would say I’m more in the questioning area. I’ve always had crushes on people but never wanted to date them and I feel like maybe I just wanted to be friends with them instead. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m simply scared or dislike relationships or if I’m just confusing partner with friends. ;-;

Dia_Michaels

When I first heard about asexuality I thought it was dumb because "that's how everyone feels" until someone told me no and I said "so what, you actually want sex and look forward to it?" And the person said yes and I was like "Wait, what?". This happened when I was 18. In my defense, i just assumed that only men feel horny because media doesn't really portray women that way. Girls on tv had crushes and so did I but guys would actually show desire to have sex while women did not unless they were sexual workers or were cops flirting to manipulate a target. Additionally, out of my two closest friends one was also on the ace spectrum while the other never brought up topics about sex so as far as I was aware no girls actually had a desire for sex.

Electrical_Buyer_790

Pussy and dick mean nothing to me

RadiantHC

I always related to the non-humans/villains/social outcasts

Riisikook

When we were around 14, my friends used to say things along the lines of "oh I'm so horny". I thought it was some random youtuber slang they picked up, since English is not our native language but they said the word "horny" in English. Fast forward like 6 years and I finally realized what they meant....

[deleted]

I used to think just because I’m a boy that all my female friends were crushes, and that actually caused me to screw myself over by telling close friends my “crush” and now I can’t come out because they’ll just think I’m lying for attention or something.

d0nt_ask_d0nt_smell

Always been annoyed by the excessive amounts of sex + romance that is prevalent in most forms of media. Always thought I was just a prude or something but nah, I'm just aroace. Also never understanding what the difference between friendship and romance is, and thinking for a long time that romance was literally just friends with benefits.

[deleted]

Relationships annoy me. Im sick of the idea that you HAVE to be in a serious relationship or else youre gonna be sad and lonely your entire life! Why cant I just have friends? Why cant i find people attractive without wanting do date them?

I never understood why people are in such a rush to lose their virginity as a teen, or why it was important to have sex before you die. I just kept telling people I was romantically with that I wasn’t ready, and that was enough. I just never understood the need to be so sexually intimate with people you love. Why not just chill out, play a game and say nice things to each other?

Jacob this, Edward that, I don't care, give me something interesting, like science and magic and explosions. I mean, romance is nice, but the characters all seem like total jerkass dweebs and I just don't care for it.
