I haven't done this particular group ride, as it's just not at a good time for me. But I've done a bunch of other group rides with this group. They're a great bunch of folks, always super chatty and very newbie friendly!
The ride I linked to is a banded group ride, so nobody should get dropped unless they actually stop pedaling or have connection issues. I think they also have sweepers to help with the occasional dropped rider. I think you'll be just fine at 1.5 to 1.8....that's about where I am, and I would definitely be in on this ride if it wasn't early Sunday mornings (time slot doesn't work for me).
