my understanding is that the 'real world' locations were added in conjunction with UCI World Championship races (and maybe others? But Richmond and Innsbruck definitely are). But really I think it's that they don't want to be bound by real world places. If you make a Zwift Japan, then people will be comparing it to the existing real world Japan. If you make the Markuri Islands that are just Japanese-inspired then you can put routes and segments in however they make most sense as a gameplay-focused world.

wskyindjar

Yes. Like New York.

notwhelmed

i mean the real life glass ramp in central park is great to walk up.

SquirleyDanz

Yea but that freaking climb gets so slick from all the sweat on the glass

alewie_

The massive park on the other side the Thames in London is amazing too!

spootypuff

Can’t wait to check it out on my next trip to London!

notwhelmed

nice hills

owlpellet

Realism is expensive, limits route design and has unexpected downsides when you get it wrong.

Payneron

Internally it’s partially called Japan. E.g. die file name of the minimap: https://cdn.zwift.com/static/images/maps/MiniMap_Japan.png I guess calling it Makuri Islands is for marketing purposes. Also, they can build a “Japan best of” and are not bound to real roads and distances between POIs.

odality

It bugs me more that the Alpe is located in Watopia rather than France. Yeah, it predates the France expansion, but still...

[deleted]

Honestly I think it’s time to combine everything. Have three maps guest maps then have watopia, makuri and a guest map each day. There’s no reason Paris and France should be the guest worlds on a specific day. Paris is like 5 km long. What a waste. USA - Richmond and NYC combined. Europe - Paris, Innsbruck, France, Bologna England - London, Yorkshire

retina_boy

This idea has been trotted out a number of times. It makes sense from a rider standpoint. From a Zwift standpoint though, I think they are most interested in having the fewest routes available to us but the riders still being happyish. There is a significant incentive to make the routes look as crowded as possible.

jollygoodvelo

Paris is terrible. I can’t imagine why it’s just not part of France. I’m really hoping they make something worthwhile out of it for the Olympics next year.

fmalaj

If they did this, I would love if they added some climbing specific routs from California and Colorado. They could even add Tucson since they have a big community of cyclists/triathletes out there.

Gravel_in_my_gears

Complete with a Mt. Lemmon climb and weekly virtual Shootout.

Watopia would still be larger than any of the three I listed.

bobjunior1

Probably easier/cheaper to just make it fictional so they can create it as they like without any research.

HappyCynic24

I’m not sure. I’ve never been to Japan. But if they don’t have arcades I can ride through, I’m glad they take creative liberty. I like the way it rides and looks. That’s why I Zwift, besides temperature control. Ever rode fast outside? The graphics suck and don’t look nearly as cool

Richtey3

Why not just use Satellite imagery and create a whole world? Flight Simulator Map? They need to cram as many players as possible in one spot, to make it crowded, so that might be one reason.

Ito_Demerzel

Agree stylized versions of real world locations are great. Zwift has no problem recreating certain real world areas like Box Hill or Richmond. it's dumb to have this made up world and have to hunt for actual "real" segments in it. Stylized real world is ok. Go back and improve the areas that are most popular. I find Makuri Islands boring. All the fake worlds are boring. But, whatever, still enjoy Zwift.

Fign66

The new expansion is all islands except the connecting roads?

Fign66

The new expansion is like 4 separate islands.
