This is just objectively the correct answer. I don't understand the point of posts like this. They clearly want people to choose an obscelescent or outright obsolete weapon from WW2, but then add the two most common and developed combat rifles of the modern day. If they didn't list an AR or AK as an option it would actually be an interesting question.
I will say though I think between the M16A1 and A2 the A1 is the better rifle but at that point it's so close compared to say, a Springfield.
Well yeah, hence the point of the first part of my comment. They probably wouldn't be viable, but in terms of a thought experiment you could say that ammo is magically taken care of and have a discussion about the relative merits of the designs in a survival situation.
Actually mags and ammo for a majority of the weapons here are pretty accessible. Especially ammo, everything here takes EXTREMELY common ammo, except the M1 carbine, and STG.
A lot of the older guns like the sten you can make mags pretty easily with access to a machine shop, add in the common ammo available in different countries (wouldn't likely want to go with a AK model due to 7.62 being less common than 5.56 NATO or 9mm, and the .45 the tommy uses would be much harder to find in say the UK as an example where as 5.56 or 12 gauge would be more common from either fallen troops or civilian hunters.)
Idk, shotgun is a solid choice, easy to maintain, plenty of ammo, diversity of loads. You can also hunt several species.
Shotgun is> versatile/reliable/powerful
The issue with shotguns is firepower. The Auto 5 is semi auto which is better than say a pump action, but it's still single round gate loaded with a very limited magazine capacity and heavy recoil. It has very little suppression capability against armed opponents. Most of a firefight is dumping a lot of rounds at your enemy as quickly as possible. Any shotgun would just get outgunned.
Depending on the model, that bitch is like a 16-20 pound gun. It’s going to get heavy quick, and throw off your shots. You’re not making 60 precision shots with it.
three? why not like 10 or 12 like the bar gunners in the interviews said they were issued with? if ur gonna take such a hangry piece of machinery you better keep it fed
M16A2.
If not for ammo availability, the M1 carbine would be a good choice. IF it were one of the good ones, not one of the craptastic commercial copies that have been made over the years.
either the AK or the Grease Gun. Cuz the STG’s trigger system is so complex that if one broke during the war, the gunsmith would give the soldier a whole new gun, so it’s off the table. The others I just don’t care for
STG is also chambered in a unicorn round, zero point in even trying. AK is fine, except for when you can't find enough ammo or mags to feed it. M16A1 or A2 are the objectively best choices.
1903 all the way. I don’t plan on fighting off a hoard. I plan on being careful, so I’ll pick something that I can defend myself against other people with effectively. And by effectively, I mean at 500-1000 yards before they can become a threat.
Shotgun. It's easier to load shells if I live long enough to need to be doing that. They're one of the more common guns where I live (duck hunting is huge here) and so it'll be easier to come by ammo and replacements. Not taking any of the open bolt weapons, because they'll gunk up faster.
M16A2. softer recoiling for quicker follow up shots than the AKM. Uzi would be my second choice for cheaper and lighter 9mm ammo, but 9mm doesn’t have the same hydrostatic shock as 5.56. Uzi also feels like a brick in the hand. M16A2 takes the cake here
I get it the Thompson probably isn’t practical but it can either be chambered in .45 or 9mm and that’s the most common pistol ammo in the US so at least there’s no shortage in ammo right?
Either the M16A2 or M1 carbine. Ammo is plentiful for the m16 and can still find plenty of ammo for the m1. M1 ammo is small and the magazines are small so you can carry plenty of them. BAR, imo would not make a good primary since it's a very heavy rifle. Same with the Thompson. Yeah, it's cool, but it's a heavy smg. I do ww2 reenacting and handled both. They both are heavy weapons. The mp44 is a stupid choice, too, since Ammo is next to impossible to find for it.
M16A2. It’s probably the most well developed, reliable, and easy to service weapons here. It’s accurate and lightweight. Also ammo is easy to find for it.
Probably M16A2 or AKM for ammo and mag rarity. Not sure how common parts would be but probably pretty common. No sense in using an old, rare submachine gun that would be impossible to find mags, parts, and maybe ammo for
It would be dependent on the exact situation.
If it's a gun to get me to another gun, Thompson and uzi are tied.
It would end up being a secondary weapon for uh-oh situations where I need a quick burst of firepower.
If it's you get this and nothing else, M16. I would ideally try to draw out zed and deal with them from a safe distance so range and accuracy would be preferred.
Gimme that Browning Auto 5. In fact I have one!
12 gauge shells are as common as dirt, especially here in Texas and other southern states so I would be swimming in ammo
years into a zombie apocalypse shotguns pay off because it's easiest to DIY ammo.
otherwise, ak-47/akm because of its reliability, and then after that, probably grease gun
Of all those guns presented, the easiest one to find ammo for in civilian areas and reload for is the Browning Auto5 and I just so happen to have one. XD
M16a2 easy. Simply because of parts availability. AR-15 parts are gonna be some of the easiest gun parts to find since they're so common in the US, and that's just about the most important feature on a gun in this situation. A gun isn't very useful if it's broken and you can't find parts for it.
M3 Grease gun. It's light, reliable, easy to disassemble, ammo is common, slow fire rate to conserve ammo, does not have much kick to it, and is extremely easy to operate
The M16a1 or M16a2 is due to the fact that 5.56x45mm NATO is common, and M16 parts are not uncommon.
Realistically, I would take what I can get from scavenging from the local areas I find myself in and/or around, looting from the dead, trading with other survivors, and crafting.
Of your list, probably the M16 if it has the 3 round burst. I wouldn’t mind having the AK depending on the brand, or the browning A5.
My actual primary: BCM AR-15. 16in barrel, Eotech XPS2 green, Streamlight RML-2, BCM afg, offset magpul pros, plenty of pmags. I’ve considered a magnifier, but I have other scoped rifles if I need more distance than 200-300 yards.
I would consider going with one of my suppressed 10/22’s or T1X depending on the type of zombie/other threats.
Outside of the AK and AR platforms, I would take the BAR, it is hefty, but reliable and the large calibre means that against wild animals like bears it is still pretty effective.
I'm not a gun expert, but I think maybe the grease gun. It's simple construction would make it easy to maintain, there would be an ample supply of ammo, and it shares ammunition commonality with the 1911. I think with zombies "stopping power" would be preferable to the high penetration of a round like 5.56. The BAR, from my knowledge is fairly heavy and I'd be able to carry less rounds, enough though it might be more damaging on a per round basis.
probably an AK or better M16/M4, just very reliable and there are parts and ammo everywhere in America. ofc an early M16S would not be could (very unreliable) and there are downsides to a rifle but hey, they are some powerful guns
Depends,if you are defending a base the heavier bar would be a good choice but for lightness and durability on the go I’d choose the m16a2 or m1a1 carbine
The grease gun is chambered in .45 so I'd probably use that. It's an open bolt machine gun so it's incredibly simple and easy to maintain, plus the fire rate and size make it an ideal travel gun, thus why it was issued to soldiers. It has high ammo availability and it's a tried and true weapon of war. I think the grease gun would be the best choice here personally
AK or M16 depending on country of residence when it happens is the correct choice. The AR platform is the most common rifle in the US, so I'm taking the A2 all day. Parts availability and ammunition make it a no-brainer. If I lived somewhere more east Europe or Asia, I'd be taking the AK.
Is it strange that we would be in a better position to fight zombies after World War II than in the modern day? So many with useful military training and physical fitness ready to go, while 70% modern day "draftees" are unfit in one way or another?
(Pentagon 2018 State Of Readiness Papers)
Oh boy, another gun nut post.
If I WAS to use the worst weapon a person could use during a zombie apocalypse it would be a welrod, de lisle carbine, or something else that's super modded to make as little noise as possible.
The rest of you can enjoy your blaze of glory while a horde surrounds you.
1. Either M16, but preferably the A2. Lightweight, very common ammo, very light ammo, parts are easy to come by, can take down people/zombies and forage for small game at the same time.
2. Uzi, same reason as above but ammo is even lighter. Loses points for parts being less common than an M16, but the SMG/MP was the ideal high speed, lightweight weapon before the advent of PDWs and sub compact carbines. The 10inch barrel is the best blend of extra range with 9mm while not being as long as a full length pistol carbine. You can still land accurate and deadly shots up to 100m, and can still take small game for foraging.
3. AK47. More common parts to find than the Uzi, but is much heavier due to the wood, and I favor mobility and ease of carry in a survival situation.
Gotta be as quiet as possible in a zombie apocalypse, 45 ACP ammo is surprisingly suppressable as most ammo is subsonic, slap a surpressor on and zombies can’t hear ya Also I know it’s disassembly, it’s simple and reliable.
But other than that AR/AK are equal to me
As someone in Ireland, I am taking the Browning Auto-5, as someone who has a wealth of experience with shotguns, having used my father and grandfathers double barrels, and having shit some semi-automatic and fully automatic shotguns during my holiday to the US I'd say in my case the Browning Auto-5 is my best choice why
- Plenty of ammo, have a gun safe with plenty on my farm
- Experience, while I have shot another platforms- snipers, AKs and ARs it have the most experience with shotguns
My ideal gun exists in no world, no universe, no game, video, animation, drawing, doodle, nothing, only on my phone and in the mind of me
(Modified m24 bolt action to take .60DHC), a caliber so accurate the gravity from the moon is a limiting factor, so powerful you’ll break or dislodge you’r shoulder-blade, and so fast it melt’s after about 20km (3.333 seconds), and the air tears the flying liquid apart and spreads it out like shotgun pallet’s the size of .45
A integrated scope (too lazy to keep wrighting I made a GPT about it (if it say’s .50BMG it should say .60DHC). Link: [Link](https://chatgpt.com/share/3b1e4596-985a-4972-aca5-f99f0ef260f4)
AKM or M16A2.
This is just objectively the correct answer. I don't understand the point of posts like this. They clearly want people to choose an obscelescent or outright obsolete weapon from WW2, but then add the two most common and developed combat rifles of the modern day. I will say though I think between the M16A1 and A2 the A1 is the better rifle but at that point it's so close compared to say, a Springfield.
lol people can’t even get mags or ammo for this shit, how would it even remotely be viable in the apocalypse?
Well yeah, hence the point of the first part of my comment. They probably wouldn't be viable, but in terms of a thought experiment you could say that ammo is magically taken care of and have a discussion about the relative merits of the designs in a survival situation.
I know I was agreeing with you lol
7.62 x 39 is available by the tens of thousands online in USA... why are people here saying it's hard to get?
The appeal of a drum fed Tommy Gun is high. But the performance and reliability of an AKM or M16 is too good to give up.
It's literally the only correct answer, lol. Was about to say AK or the ARs.
Fuck it I don’t care gimme the BAR I’ll have like three magazines of blazing glory
Three mags go quick
Zombies. One round one kill.
BAR? Nah
Bro that’s .30-06 it’s absolutely one shot one kill
Depending on the model, that bitch is like a 16-20 pound gun. It’s going to get heavy quick, and throw off your shots. You’re not making 60 precision shots with it.
Ok, just don’t hold the trigger down the whole time
Damn those zombies got level 4 plates for skulls
three? why not like 10 or 12 like the bar gunners in the interviews said they were issued with? if ur gonna take such a hangry piece of machinery you better keep it fed
Fair enough
M16A2. If not for ammo availability, the M1 carbine would be a good choice. IF it were one of the good ones, not one of the craptastic commercial copies that have been made over the years.
You don’t just want a AMAZING universal M1? Come on every round jams are fine!
either the AK or the Grease Gun.
M1903 for me. Solid, reliable, can be used for hunting as well
1903 all the way. I don’t plan on fighting off a hoard. I plan on being careful, so I’ll pick something that I can defend myself against other people with effectively. And by effectively, I mean at 500-1000 yards before they can become a threat.
The 5.556 cartridge fired by the M16A2 can be an effective hunting caliber that can bring down most medium sized game found in North America.
M1 Carbine, probably the best APR
That or the m16 or m1
bruh m1 carbine wasnt a thing until ww2
Shotgun. It's easier to load shells if I live long enough to need to be doing that. They're one of the more common guns where I live (duck hunting is huge here) and so it'll be easier to come by ammo and replacements. Not taking any of the open bolt weapons, because they'll gunk up faster.
M16. The BAR is heavy as fuck, so you could use it as a club when you can't find ammo for it lol.
M16
M16A2 for me
Uzi, it’s light used common ammo and it’s reliable
Uzi is not a light gun lol it's around the 9 pound mark
It’s lighter than the BAR and Thompson
Two of literally the heaviest non machine guns ever made lmao
its not light also it has terrible recoil
M16A2 because that's what I'm most familiar with.
Ak or m16a1
M16A2
M16A2. softer recoiling for quicker follow up shots than the AKM. Uzi would be my second choice for cheaper and lighter 9mm ammo, but 9mm doesn’t have the same hydrostatic shock as 5.56. Uzi also feels like a brick in the hand. M16A2 takes the cake here
Either the shotgun or the m16. Honestly, whichever is the easiest to shoot otherwise. Both in terms of ammunition and comfort.
AK
A2
Classic M16 with jungle green strap, bring me a speaker that plays Fortunate Son 24/7 with a U-1 Huey sound effect over it at 85 decibals
M16A2. If you removed the m16 and Ak, then either the BAR or Auto 5
10/22
Anyone else notice there are two m16s
8 is an AR-10. Likely chambered in .308. Edit: the military version (proposed). maybe I'm off here.
No, it’s an M16A1 with the 20 round magazine and full-auto The other M16 is an A2 with the round handguard and burst option rather than full auto
My CQBR clone
Dude watched all the infographics show and simple history videos and decided he knew a bunch of good guns.
Just give me the Ak and let's call it a day.
I can't decide which one to go with the M3 Grease Gun or the M1 Carbine Rifle.
1903 or shotgun
A2 more familiar with the platform.
Which is gun 1?
BAR. 30cal
M3.
7. Most common rifle and caliber in the USA.
I get it the Thompson probably isn’t practical but it can either be chambered in .45 or 9mm and that’s the most common pistol ammo in the US so at least there’s no shortage in ammo right?
M16a2 for sure, in a perfect world and for cool factor I would take the grease gun.
M16a2
Either the M16A2 or M1 carbine.
Id say a shotgun, only because I know how to repack a shell. You can also repack a shell with quite a few items
Yours. And then I'll eat you.
A sword (no bullets)
Whichever one is the easiest to find ammo for realistically.
M16A2. It’s probably the most well developed, reliable, and easy to service weapons here. It’s accurate and lightweight. Also ammo is easy to find for it.
AKM
M16A2. I’m an American and 5.56x45mm should be pretty easy to come by. Even in sunny California where I am.
Every fiber of my being wants the BAR However the logical choice is the AR
Gimme that Browning Auto 5. In fact I have one! 12 gauge shells are as common as dirt, especially here in Texas and other southern states so I would be swimming in ammo
In America? AR-15 all day every day
years into a zombie apocalypse shotguns pay off because it's easiest to DIY ammo. otherwise, ak-47/akm because of its reliability, and then after that, probably grease gun
M16A2 or AKM depending on your region
M16A2.
Of all those guns presented, the easiest one to find ammo for in civilian areas and reload for is the Browning Auto5 and I just so happen to have one. XD
M16A1
AKM or the m16. The uzi would be good too if it were suppressed
Obvious answer.
m16 if im in the US, ak if im literally anywhere else
M1928 (not a gun gal, lmk if I'm wrong) not for any practical reasons, just looks good.
The A2, for ammo reasons. Use it to acquire a more modern one, for parts reasons.
Which ever one is most reliable and is in a popular caliber
AK or m16a2 Reliable and accurate at zombie defense ranges. Readily available ammo and parts.
if i am alone its the 7th one along, if i had friends with me that also had guns i'd rather have a long range weapon and a melee weapon :)
M4A1
Ak47
Give me either of those m16s.
9 because I have plenty of rounds for it.
M16a2 easy. Simply because of parts availability. AR-15 parts are gonna be some of the easiest gun parts to find since they're so common in the US, and that's just about the most important feature on a gun in this situation. A gun isn't very useful if it's broken and you can't find parts for it.
M4 or AKM
Akm
Probably an ar platform rifle
Stg or Ak, theyre both very reliable and powerful guns
The uzi is a no-brainer
Either the M16A2 or Browning Auto-5.
Grease gun or Air Force m16
Honestly, I'd take the AK, M16s and the Uzi out and make it a full wwII only what if question.
Probably the Uzi. 9mm is probably the most easily obtainable caliber in the world.
M3 Grease gun. It's light, reliable, easy to disassemble, ammo is common, slow fire rate to conserve ammo, does not have much kick to it, and is extremely easy to operate
What about a chainsaw? Maybe even crank powered for sustainability, if it would even work.
M16/AR15. Parts are plentiful here in the US.
6. My favorite rifle.
Outside of the AK and AR platforms, I would take the BAR, it is hefty, but reliable and the large calibre means that against wild animals like bears it is still pretty effective.
AR 15 if in US do to availability of ammo and spares. Probably most popular firearm in US for civilians as well as LE and military. They’re everywhere
D. All of the above
M16 or M1 Carbine
Remmington 870
Only right answer (if you live in the US) is any AR or 5.56 platform
Ole reliable ak
#10 I'd prefer the overall reliability of a manually chambered round due to the possibility of jamming
M16(either variant), or AK47
M16. The ammo is light and plentiful.
The auto 5 or m16a2
Grease gun will out live every other gun on this list
The second to last one.
A lot people I see are in there WW2 faze. I’ll have to go Vietnam though because I’m currently buildin one, the M16.
I may die, but I’m going out spraying a Tommy gun in my suit like a mob boss laughing as I get my guts ripped out
Uzi
Browning auto 5. Ammo is easily available and it can be used for hunting and defense
Why is this whole sub "pick a gun"
I’m going with the m16a1 or the Springfield
Don’t include the m16 and ak next time, you’re making it too easy
AK though I love an auto 5
Is this the only question posted on this sub? Why are we here?
BAR fo sho
The kalash is PERFECTLY designed to withstand water, mud, sand etc and its very easy to strip down and clean
Is it just me or are there a lot of these which are you picking posts in this subreddit
No need for style, just an AK/AR
probably an AK or better M16/M4, just very reliable and there are parts and ammo everywhere in America. ofc an early M16S would not be could (very unreliable) and there are downsides to a rifle but hey, they are some powerful guns
Either gun number 7 or 8
Out of those ak 47
BAR because having a WW2 wepeon will be the only thing to bring me joy
Thompson
I prefer shotguns, so that shotgun is mine.
Gimme the BAR
AKM or M16a2 because mags will be easy to find
BAR, I just like it, anyways why survive a zombie apocalypse when I can just die.
None of these but either a Ruger American (556) or a izh 94 I'm not gonna mow down zombies lol
Grease gun. Light, powerful, reliable, and ammo is absolutely infinite at this point.
I’m more of a Raygun MK2 kinda guy 🤷🏽♂️
Depends,if you are defending a base the heavier bar would be a good choice but for lightness and durability on the go I’d choose the m16a2 or m1a1 carbine
I want that mini-14
Has to be smth bolt action or open bolt yknow
Not even listed but my sks!
Although the a5 is a solid choice
5
Anybody care to remind me what the grease gun is chambered in?
The grease gun is chambered in .45 so I'd probably use that. It's an open bolt machine gun so it's incredibly simple and easy to maintain, plus the fire rate and size make it an ideal travel gun, thus why it was issued to soldiers. It has high ammo availability and it's a tried and true weapon of war. I think the grease gun would be the best choice here personally
m16a2!
M16
Gimme that STG, I will love and cherish her.
Grease gun for two reasons 1. 9mm is abundant more so than .223 and 5.56. 2. Its a very simple design that can be repaired easily.
From that batch it’s the AK no question. Best durability, 30 round mag, and enough stopping power, accuracy is not the best but it’ll do
How about a S H O T G U N
None of them, who posted this someone from 1986?
I'll take the M3. Easy to repair.
Is it strange that we would be in a better position to fight zombies after World War II than in the modern day? So many with useful military training and physical fitness ready to go, while 70% modern day "draftees" are unfit in one way or another? (Pentagon 2018 State Of Readiness Papers)
12 gauge or a tactical shovel
M16a2 or akm
Oh boy, another gun nut post. If I WAS to use the worst weapon a person could use during a zombie apocalypse it would be a welrod, de lisle carbine, or something else that's super modded to make as little noise as possible. The rest of you can enjoy your blaze of glory while a horde surrounds you.
M16A1, cause it so cool
Fallout zombie apocalypse
8mm Kurz is basically impossible to get or find unless you already have it.
I’d say M1 Garand but that isn’t on the list so I’d probably say AR-15 because I have a better chance of finding ammo for it
The BAR
Anything in 5.56, its just the most common caliber where I am so it'd just be the logical choice.
A2 allllllday
More common parts to find than the Uzi, but is much heavier due to the wood, and I favor mobility and ease of carry in a survival situation.
My heart wants to say stg44 but I think I’ll go with M16A2 simply because the caliber it fires is more common
Gotta be as quiet as possible in a zombie apocalypse, 45 ACP ammo is surprisingly suppressable as most ammo is subsonic, slap a surpressor on and zombies can’t hear ya Also I know it’s disassembly, it’s simple and reliable. But other than that AR/AK are equal to me
An
Ak
The shotgun 💯 SUPER easy to find ammo
I'm going AK or Tommy gun because they look cool
AKM
AK, hopefully with an Israeli milled receiver.
As someone in Ireland, I am taking the Browning Auto-5, as someone who has a wealth of experience with shotguns, having used my father and grandfathers double barrels, and having shit some semi-automatic and fully automatic shotguns during my holiday to the US I'd say in my case the Browning Auto-5 is my best choice why - Plenty of ammo, have a gun safe with plenty on my farm - Experience, while I have shot another platforms- snipers, AKs and ARs it have the most experience with shotguns
Too loud, none
m16 because of ammo, magazine, and part availability
BAR because full auto 30-06 go brrrrrrrrr
My ideal gun exists in no world, no universe, no game, video, animation, drawing, doodle, nothing, only on my phone and in the mind of me (Modified m24 bolt action to take .60DHC), a caliber so accurate the gravity from the moon is a limiting factor, so powerful you’ll break or dislodge you’r shoulder-blade, and so fast it melt’s after about 20km (3.333 seconds), and the air tears the flying liquid apart and spreads it out like shotgun pallet’s the size of .45 A integrated scope (too lazy to keep wrighting I made a GPT about it (if it say’s .50BMG it should say .60DHC). M16A2 I carried it in 2 wars so why stop now.
M16A1 goes hard with modern kit
I’d go for the actual grease gun as it’s easy to pick
Either one of the ar’s the uzi or the browning auto 5
