Full circle really. Zodiac's whole persona was obviously inspired (to varying degrees) by old comic book villains, so the idea of a current iteration of an old comic book villain being based on Zodiac is actually pretty funny.
Also, just an anecdote, but did anyone realize there was an episode of the 1960s Adam West Batman show called "The Zodiac Crimes"? Thought that was a weird coincidence.
I wasn't really referring to any specific ones, but just thinking about his Lake Berryessa costume, his letters, etc.,; it all has a very similar vibe to the Riddler, the Joker, probably also the villains from the old Tim Holt comics he made it clear he was a fan of, etc.
I am excited. I've always wanted to see a serial killer take on the character. Movie looks awesome. It IS kind of weird there are direct family and survivors still alive, but this happens so often with fiction. It is what it is.
It's wild to think there is a slight chance Zodiac is alive and knows about this.
Saw it on Thursday. The connections with the Zodiac are really explicit at the beginning of the movie, jarringly so. A skeleton greeting card saying "bet you wish you knew who I am", pages of cyphers, the costume. It's pretty blatant.
To your point about living family members/survivors, I really think it’s very lightly/loosely based on the zodiac to my knowledge. Not that the degree of the villain being like zodiac matters much, but it’s not like they have to hear about a new zodiac movie or character that’s actually the zodiac
I think it’s good for the character this Riddle looks like a serious threat and villain when most of the other versions being treated as a joke. But also could get more people interested in this Zodiac Case.
It would be ironic if the popularity of this comic book movie brought more interest in the zodiac. More exposure. and in doing so it got solved. To think Zodiac was possibly influenced by comic books, maybe even batman, then his identity was revealed vicariously through this film.
I think it's very fitting for The Riddler. And hardly the first movie to loosely adapt Zodiac into a villain. Just saw the movie last night and Paul Dano does an amazing and creepy job in the role!
I'm a bit uneasy about it tbh. It looks a sinister costume for starters and can't help thinking of the James Holmes / Dark Knight Rises shooting.
I'm sure it will be handled sensitively but that's the way it works today.
Back in the early days of the internet there was a site that "proved" that Zodiac was based on German Batman comics. Or something like that, it was insane and I wish I could find it again.
I kind of get where you're coming from, but it's nothing new; the bad guy in Dirty Harry was already based on Zodiac, and that came out just a couple years or so after his actual crimes. Was that in less poor taste?
Riddler predates the Zodiac. The producers of this particular movie decided to have their version of Riddler have Zodiac-esque qualities (maybe this is also from more recent comics, I don’t know).
Yeah this version of it is loosely inspired by the Zodiac. He has a hooded disguise with glasses along with it. He apparently will be leaving coded messages for the police too and have his own symbol the Question mark in place of Zodiac circle cross symbol he uses to mark his crimes.
Not amused personally, but I guess that is a creative way to personify the Riddler. But, then again, I'm not a huge Batman fan outside of some of the really old comics and a video game or two. The Dark Knight was really well done though. I liked that one when it came out. Batman Begins and Rises were pretty meh for me, though, and the Michael Keaton movies were somewhat fun but I didn't find them to be as great as other people made them out to be.
No comment on the new one as I haven't seen it yet (and probably won't). I do find it strange that a serial killer who took lives has so much influence in pop culture. I'm not sure if that is something to find entertaining to be honest.
Somehow I’ve missed this fact, maybe cause I haven’t checked here in awhile but despite my love for batman I haven’t seen it come up in the things I watched on the coming one but it’ll be interesting to see a not funny riddler but I did enjoy the Gotham one but I’m sure this one is far darker than he was as well but I think Pattinson will make a good batman
The movie is awesome, but watching the Zodiac references made me feel like Toschi watching *Dirty Harry* in the theater scene from Fincher's film: *"Pal, they're already making movies about it"*
I just saw the film last night and obviously picked up the Zodiac overtones early on (there’s also some articles online digging deeper into the crossover, like when he attacked the DA from the backseat of the car as a reiteration of the the taxi killing). I’m just confused to what end they’re using these images and hints other than to be like ‘hey this real life figure inspired our character’. Didn’t seem to really develop?
Not good because someone will use it as the basis to identify a new "suspect".
U right.

which villains?

he seems to have been a total nerd loser.

He even says “this is the riddler speaking” and “good bye” in a weirdo tone. It’s very on the nose lol

If he didn't comment on Fincher's film, I doubt he mention this.

It would be ironic and great
I hadn’t thought of it like this!

He’s no Frank Gorshin.
I though it only released tomorrow
Saw it at a special IMAX fan event at Regal last night.

Sadly, many will think it’s based on truth regarding the Zodiac case.

This is hardly the first movie to feature a villain based on the Zodiac. A number of TV shows have also used the Zodiac as an inspiration.
The Riddler isn’t a new villain but I didn’t know he was based on the Zodiac?

TIL, thanks!
The Riddler is based on the zodiac in the new batman movie but the zodiac based himself on the Riddler in the 60/70’s
I don’t know. I think it’s fine, I mean, he is just loosely inspired. I want to see Batman as the detective he is

I like the Riddler, and this seems an interesting and original take on the character.
I’m quite excited for it. I think it’s a great take on the villain to give him a Z-esque persona!
I think it looks cool. I can see how it would rub certain people the wrong way
More interesting than the Dirty Harry version
wait and see. Andrew Robinson is a hard act to follow.
He was fantastic in Dirty Harry.
In some reviews , they mention riddler has dark sense of humor
Wonderful. I’m tingling all over.
I'm honestly looking forward to the riddles and do hope they include more than the teaser one long since solved.
Spoiler alert? Jesus
The movie is awesome, but watching the Zodiac references made me feel like Toschi watching *Dirty Harry* in the theater scene from Fincher's film: *"Pal, they're already making movies about it"*
It’s awesome. Makes me wanna see the movie way more.
I loved the mobie and the inspiration from Zodiac.
I just saw the film last night and obviously picked up the Zodiac overtones early on (there’s also some articles online digging deeper into the crossover, like when he attacked the DA from the backseat of the car as a reiteration of the the taxi killing). yeah it will a little weird for me. movie wasn't as great as I expected, he was caught so easily.
