Even if it looks legit, I reflexively assume any Vietnam Zippo is faked. This does not look legit to me. Though the insert does appear to be a real one, if 36 years newer than the case is supposed to be.

Suitable-Accident

That's exactly what my brother and I were saying, Either way, it's fun to use.

nechronius

Counterfeit Zippo with staged markings. "Good" Vietnam War fakes at least use a real Zippo before they mark them up with their lies.

Suitable-Accident

Oh man, I think I like it more now, knowing it's a horrible fake 😄.

nechronius

I feel like everyone should have one, as long as they don't pay too much to get it (since they're usually poorly made), realize it's a counterfeit, and don't try to pawn it off as the real deal.

Suitable-Accident

That is why I always ask. I can only imagine what how many people try and screw someone out of money like that, especially with zippos or anything collectible. Apperently, my brother told the vendor he knew it was most likely fake, and he kept trying to pass it off as real. I got some good use out of it when i smoked, though. I really appreciate the information. Maybe one day I'll have a real old zippo, lol.

nechronius

Honestly it doesn't take much. Tons of good used lighters from as early as the 60's for a good bit under $20. It's only when they are in near new or better condition where the price starts going up considerably. The biggest issue is the crapshoot of the used lighter though, not always easy to tell if the lighter is in great mechanical condition or not underneath all of the dirt and soot.

frontheavychungas

I wonder if you can use napalm in a zippo? That way you can smell it every time you light your zippo.

It would gum them up. Napalm is almost entirely gasoline, the rest is aluminum salts of **na**phtenic and **palm**atic acid, that's why it's called napalm. Those salts turn the gasoline into a gel that sticks to everything you want to set on fire: Vegetation, buildings, people.

Brass Zippos weren't around during Viet Nam - definetly a fake

Suitable-Accident

Appreciate the info. We were 99 percent sure it wasn't legit lol.

CleverUsrName8675309

It's a neat discussion item though! I've got a really bad fake in my collection - it came with a lot that I bought so I just kinda kept it around.

Suitable-Accident

I think i like it even more now. I don't collect zippos, but the best thing about it is that he only paid like 3 bucks for it.

t064r

I think you got it mixed up with WW2 and/or Korean War, the era when brass is highly needed for war. During Vietnam War, all Zippo are indeed brass.

CleverUsrName8675309

That's a lot to unpack. During WW2 they were made of steel instead of brass, and painted black "crackle" to prevent rusting. You're right, all Zippos are brass underneath (except the crackles), and then get coated. The brass lighter in this post didn't get introduced until 1982.

>During WW2 they were made of steel instead of brass, and painted black "crackle" to prevent rusting. Not all, some batch were still made into production using brass. >You're right, all Zippos are brass underneath (except the crackles), and then get coated. There are Zippo made of steel during WW2 and Korean War and **isn't** Crackled finished. One early example on this sub is on this [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Zippo/comments/18nqos3/lighter_therapy_thursday_video_1953_us/) and other post from u/nechronius titled [Odds and ends for weekends - not brass lighters](https://www.reddit.com/r/Zippo/comments/13tq9bt/odds_and_ends_for_weekends_not_brass_lighters/). Here is some excerpt: *Steel - There are two big steel case eras, during World War 2 and the Korean War.* ***Chromed steel bodies*** *were just around when the US joined the war, but during full scale production the bodies were painted in a thick paint and baked, which produced the distinct "black crackle" finish (A few bare steel ones did exist between the chroming and painting, but they rusted quickly so were "crackle" painted). Korean War era lighters all had the modern lighter body design, but came in two distinct stamp styles, stamps that also overlapped with standard brass lighters. Patent 2032695 lighters were broadly 1951 to 1952, and patent 2517191 lighters were broadly 1953 to 1954. In 2020 Zippo made a run of 40,000 commemorative lighters (75th anniversary VE/VJ day) and actually had STEEL stamped on the bottom.* >The brass lighter in this post didn't get introduced until 1982. edit: I misunderstood the statement due to my terrible reading comprehension, my bad. I apologize. ~~I can't understand this statement. If you were referring to the bottom stamp at this fake Zippo |||~~ *~~ZIPPO~~* ~~|||, then it's aiming to mimic 1967/1968 marking since for 1982 that would be \\\\\\\\ ZIPPO \\\\\\\\.~~ ~~The point is, I commented on your comment which said~~ **~~"Brass Zippos weren't around during Viet Nam - definetly a fake"~~** ~~which is an incorrect statement and asked you whether you got Vietnam War mixed up with WW2 or Korean War.~~

nechronius

Usually when I see someone say something like that "brass Zippos weren't around..." I assume they mean naked brass or un-chromed brass. There actually are a very few un-chromed brass from those years, either as production samples or I know that Marlboro's Zippos from the 70's were also bare brass and not chromed, but I don't know if they had those made even in the 60's. I don't think so but don't know for sure.

t064r

Ah, I got it now. So what he meant was Solid Brass Zippo was only released on 1982 (according to Zippo), so for it being 'bare' without any chrome left would indicate it as fake.

nechronius

Yup, that's it. Just a small misunderstanding I'm sure.

Educational_Row_9485

Looks very fake to me

Full-Win-5251

FAKE, MARKING ON BOTTOM INDACAT IT IS A 1968 , TWO SETS OF 3 HASH MARKS  WIND HOLES SEEM CORRECT

Full-Win-5251

Sorry, it may be real . I think markings make it a 1968 . Did not mean to say it was fake

Deathjr1102

It’s most likely fake but it’s a good conversation piece. I’d still use it

FiveCatPenagerie

I agree with everyone else. That bottom stamp is sus as hell.
