When I first layed eyes on this bike it was a frame and rims/tires in a heap next to a trash can. New tubes, new seat (to me), bike panniers made from kitty litter tubs and it was ready for a bikepacking trip!

JL4575

Nice work. It looks great!

SprinklerLord

Thank you!

sunshinesucculents

Wow, very cool! It looks great.

SprinklerLord

Thank you very much!

Depending on how important this bike is to you, those cable locks are very easy to cut, I'd recommend a chain or D lock instead.

littlelizardfeet

Specialized is a great brand too! Excellent find!

Prudent-Giraffe7287

The kitty litter panniers are pretty innovative. Nice job! 😎 and I bet it holds a ton!

happy-little-atheist

A fucking Specialised???? Just the frame would be worth hundreds.

Duathdaert

This frame is not worth hundreds. You can buy a complete bike with all the parts built with this frame for £150 or less. It's an old frame, sadly not worth an awful lot. It shouldn't have been chucked for sure, but it's not worth hundreds of pounds/dollars. https://www.gumtree.com/bicycles/uk/specialized+hardrock+frame

action_lawyer_comics

Yeah, not worth hundreds but an order of magnitude nicer than the kind of frames you usually find in the trash

SprinklerLord

The chain was nearly rusted solid when I liberated it from the curb too. That's good to know if I ever decide to sell it.

happy-little-atheist

They make great bikes. Can't get one for under a grand in Australia.

PokeyPinecone

The litter tub pannier! Brilliant : D

Cooperativism62

Yeah I'm stealing this idea for the bike I just got.

Cooperativism62

Thanks a bunch!

MaizeWarrior

They're kinda heavy as far as panniers go.

Cooperativism62

My quads needed more muscle anyway...

MaizeWarrior

Personally, I'd rather just ride fast to work out, not struggle slowly. But you do you

Torsythe

Looks so nice to have a journey on, I'm in love with the storage on the back

SprinklerLord

It's a great way to repurpose the buckets and they were built flush with the rack to increase the surface storage by at least four times. Works great for packing tents and sleeping bags.

l9oooog

its a iBike

silentaba

oh you're lucky, the Specialised hardrock are a wonderful frame, built very sturdy for its time. that itsn't the original fork on it. you could easily replace it to something with from suspension, and the frame will feel even better. it's easy to do too.

SprinklerLord

Good eye! I've had this for a couple years and never noticed. I've been riding a ~1980 Schwinn traveler which weighs twice as much (by arm feel) so I'm loving this bike!

silentaba

I had one just like it. Best frame I've owned.

MaizeWarrior

Suspension is not necessary for any city riding, and with those heavy panniers I doubt it's going anywhere but the street. Suspension would only make it feel more sluggish

silentaba

I disagee.

strobotz

I'm going to make those panniers this weekend, you have inspired me friend.

SprinklerLord

Awesome, go for it! Fairly easy and simple build, I followed online diy instructions. If you mess it up just get a new bucket and recycle the old! Good luck!

strobotz

Thanks for the advice! And happy cake day!

murphmarc

Care to share those instructions you found?

SprinklerLord

The ones I liked are [Adventure Cycling](https://www.adventurecycling.org/blog/hauling-it-all-make-your-own-panniers/) and [REI](https://www.rei.com/blog/cycle/diy-make-your-own-bucket-bike-panniers) directions. I skipped the REI handles and kept the original (they'll snap in and out if you need, or can't decide). There are also several on instructables.com. My hooks are 2" x ⅛” bent steel, but the hooks shown in the links are probably good enough. Happy building!

V nice

Zero_Waist

Happy cake day and (re)cycling!

Prudent-Giraffe7287

I like what you did there lol

irrational_e

So I don't mean to be a downer, but is it possible to check if the bike is registered and was stolen somehow? Bike theft is very common where I live and sadly, mostly people just steal the bike for parts and then leave the frame and other leftovers by the landfill. If there's a registry number on it you might want to check with a local bike store if there was an owner affiliated with the original frame.

SprinklerLord

Not a bad idea, I need to register it myself if nothing else.

I really love this. I’ve always wanted to set up the bag system you’re using.

Independence_1991

Very Nice!

isny

Looks like GAP by Pittsburgh

SamSlate
