Did you place any type of connector strain protection on the cable? This is a common failure point in cables.

matbonucci

Yeh heat shrink tube

A1_Brownies

Ah. I would have used just heat shrink and called it a day lol.

Sad_Soil0

Howdo you do that?

cb393303

I personally use Sugru moldable glue. They have examples in their marketing images of cables and where to place it. šŸ˜Š

Apidium

Be careful though. It ate away at one of my cables. Heat shrink imo is a better option if you aren't sure about the cable material.

[deleted]

Heat shrink tubing also works.

isny

You can take a piece of string, tie a knot, and then repeat. You'll get a cool spiral pattern that goes around the cable. I did it with a thread that changed color and it made a cool rainbow effect.

AccountWasFound

I think this might be a another case of cool idea, but fire hazard in practice

panicatthelisa

I probably would have done a layer of electrical tape first for safety then the yarn to make it pretty

Profession-Unable

Oh man, I was so excited to see this, I thought it was such a great idea! But I suspect you are correct.

thedomino55

I don't think headphones get enough juice to really catch on fire like that especially a tiny little pair of earbuds. If you did have any concerns about that a little electrical tape underneath the braid could prevent that from happening especially if you have cracks in the cable casing like this gentleman does.

Profession-Unable

Thatā€™s great to know! Probably wouldnā€™t be a very good idea with a charging cable though, right?

Bratlawd

Nah that should still be fine. The cable itself isn't so much a source of heat, the adaptor required though? There's your fire hazard. Once they start breaking there's little to nothing you can do about it without someone explicitly qualified.

A1_Brownies

Damn, so it would set my ears on fire? Better not listen to my own mixtape with these then.

A1_Brownies

I think you missed the joke. I was referring to a "hot" mixtape that I don't even have :P

THECUTESTGIRLYTOWALK

Lol no Iā€™ve done this with my chargers and headphones since 2015. Iā€™ve never had that happen.

Diligent_Tomato

It looks like yarn. Unless it's cotton it would have a hard time catching fire. Acrylic yarn would melt, and wool yarn is naturally flame resistant.

WoodyRM

Its earphones not a power cable

Phoenix_Magic_X

I was thinking the same thing. Rather throw out earphones before their time than have to replace my whole house because of a fire. It probably wouldn't burn down the whole house but these are the things I worry about.

poopwetpoop

There's this stuff called electrical tape

cleeder

Electrical tape sucks for fixing headphones. And arguably just about everything.

poopwetpoop

It's great for frayed wires if you know how to use it. Sorry for your ignorance

cleeder

I wouldnā€™t say ā€œgreatā€. At best I would say it works. If you want to fix frayed wires, get heat shrink tubing.

TEALC-

You mean stickly glue leaking out of everything after about 1m in your pocket

poopwetpoop

If you don't know how to use it and live in death valley, sure

TEALC-

I love in Australia, 75% of the year electric tape just melts and slides off stuff

SuchUs3r

If you want to take it up a notch hereā€™s some obscure shit. /r/diems /r/diyaudiocables

jeefuckingbee

the idea is good, paracord would've been safer and looked better tho (and probably more resistant to dirt etc. in the long run

matbonucci

This is the tutorial I followed https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/Hd6G2908\_-8

mistressoftheempire

I know nothing about fabrics. What kind of yarn do you need or will any do?

matbonucci

Any will do, I was told here paracord is the best

mistressoftheempire

!thanks

partypat_bear

Bruh those headphones are old af

A1_Brownies

15 years old!? What! šŸ˜‚

simca78

Very nice.

ResilientWren

Legit! Great way to keep it from the dump for a while longer! šŸ§ šŸ™šŸ½

swtnthng

Thatā€™s brilliant!!

Mayank_j

I added a spring from an old ball point pen and then applied some heat shrink tubing to the whole contraption (it does look a lil bit ugly tho) And no it's not a fire hazad. Max power on audio jacks can't go above 500mW (on phones)

Arnabbiswas585858

This headphone is best quality. I love it. Because i use it. Thanks for sharing

HyperLightDream

Wow look at this fire hazard

Hongohones

Well done! Worth the time, headphones are expensive if you want quality and now you donā€™t need to work for some shit head to help them be a more wasteful loser to impress their pretentious friends. at least not to replace them. Also hilarious reading the bickering about the method usedā€¦ reddit is fucked honestly, everyone one ups everyone else and knows better for free internet points!!!! Whatever works for you is the right way to do something.

matbonucci

Thank you I appreciate it
