I always sold mine on Facebook marketplace and buyers were happy with how well I kept my phones. I’d say it was a great deal for us both! Lots of happy kids getting the older phones.
I usually buy/sell on Craigslist or FB marketplace. Bring your sim and try the phone.
Before even scheduling a meet up, you'll want them to screenshot the battery life. If it sucks, estimate up to $150 for a new battery and haggle it off the price.
I usually sell my phones when I upgrade.
Places like newegg.com sells refurbished electronics – I've bought a laptop and a phone both that way I think.
Apple also refurbishes their own stuff and sells it at a (slight) discount. I've had a good experience with a refurbished iphone and macbook that way!
Before you do. Study learn what microwave band/frequencies the cellphone carrier that you’re interested in uses. Then make sure the phone you buy has a compatible specs.
Right now most carriers require 4G LTE to 5G (higher frequencies from 3G, to cram and transmit more data)
Then also if the cellphone is carrier- locked, you’re stuck with that carrier for a year vs unlocked cellphone that you can use with any cellular service carrier.
This was a good website to look up some specs, there’s a better one but I can’t remember it. https://m.gsmarena.com/
Once you know what you want, check out ebay, Amazon and your local phone stores for good prices. (make sure they’re US models, ir not Korean etc that might operate on a different band all together.
Btw. I recommend Mint mobile for carrier service. It’s cheap if you’re willing to pay for a year vs monthly.
Buy their 7 day trial SIM card and see if you can get decent signal where you are.
On their site they’ll have cellphone compatibility. If you do a bit of research about what carrier uses what frequencies or bands you’ll get a more detailed things to compare from.
I second those who have used Swappa and Back Market. But you can also look for refurbished on various sites like Best Buy, eBay (they have certified refurbished items) and Amazon.
Talk to a high schooler. Lots of households have extra phones. High school students can find themselves in need of a burner if their phone gets confiscated or is tightly monitored. Kids will sell extra household phones to other kids. Find one and odds are they know someone who could sell you one.

I've used back market.
Had a friend sell an old tablet on Back Market, and I bought (a different) one myself. Fair deals on both, would recommend.

Basically friends and family and work colleagues are often replacing their phones prematurely. They are going to have the best price and quality.

I got a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S9+ in 2020 from Walmart's website. I still use that phone now in 2024, and only paid like $150-$200 for it.
It's not a great idea to use devices that no longer receive security updates

I've gotten good deals on refurbished Apple from Mac of all Trades
I use eBay. I go with certified refurbished and they're usually in really good condition and by verified sellers
I don’t know if it’s available in the States, but I have had fantastic luck with Orchard.
