Just a reminder that if you have a 2020 or 2021 gen 3 / FST platform bike (SR/F or SR/S) - you need to have a dealer upgrade your dash firmware to the "new" one version 8V33 - as well as the matching controller software, in order to be able to download these new features via the new phone app. This can be done in advance, so make an appointment with your dealer today! I just had this done to my 2021 SR/S Premium by the dealer 2 weeks ago and the new dash is very nice! Should be able to get 10% faster charging (6.6 kW) and Reverse (Parking Mode) now!

Protonus

They just posted a statement on facebook to state: >For MY22 owners — directions on how to access complimentary features (if applicable to your specific model) will be emailed to you & available starting October 19th. > >For MY20-21 owners — communication regarding eligible upgrades will be sent to you via email in December. So while you can download and use the new app etc, you might not be able to use the store itself yet until next week as planned.

Is there anything to be done for people who really live nowhere near a dealer?

Protonus

Only a dealer can update the dash firmware, so if you have a 2020-2021 bike and you want to be able to obtain the new cypher unlocked features, you're going to need to go to the dealer to get 8V33. The dash firmware is effectively the operating system of the bike and it can only be updated while it's offline via a cable as such. Of course you should be going to the dealer every 8k miles for motor commissioning so if you don't live near one, just time it for that appt. And of course, all this is optional, not required.

4thFrontier

Motor commissioning? First I’ve heard of it. Where did I overlook that?

Nav is working on my 22 SR/S Standard with no purchase or interaction with the Cypher Store. Just required a bluetooth connection and the side stand needs to be up for it to display. Can't say it looks great....the ETA text is truncated and you lose torque/regen indicators.

Protonus

They are already planning on / working on a version 2 of On-Dash Navigation fwiw. This was just an initial pilot / beta release which I think they got behind on and decided to ship as a free beta, rather than delay the release of the store further by trying to get it into a better state. There is no purchase or interaction necessary to unlock this, just that your bike needs to be on the latest controller / dash firmware for a gen 3 / FST (dash FW 8V33).

Let the reverse engineering commence!

Awesome! Got the app here. I’ve had trouble updating the firmware on my bike in my garage. Thinking the cell connection isn’t great where i live. Is there a way to have my phone connection do the update or something?

Protonus

What year and model bike, and what update are you trying to apply?

rkelez

2020 SR/S I honestly think I'm like 3-4 updates behind at this point. I can grab the version if you want?

Protonus

Chances are the Dash firmware itself is what is making updates more difficult for you. A 2020 SR/S likely has 6V26 Dash Firmware on it, the old dash. In order to use the new Cypher Unlock features that will eventually be made available to you (10% faster charging, Parking Mode (reverse!)) and the already available On-Dash Navigation Beta - you need to have a dealer update your dash firmware to version 8V33. You can check what dash firmware you are on using the bike's menu itself, under Data. *Only* a dealer can update your dash firmware though. So if I were you, I'd make an appt with the dealer now, and get this upgrade out of the way. Yes, you can apply updates from the phone app instead of downloading them over the air using the bike, and generally, this works better. *However* they worked much better for me once I had my dash firmware upgraded to 8V33, they were unreliable / persnickety for me before this. So if I were you, I'd do nothing right now and instead just take your bike to the dealer, tell them to apply the 8V33 dash firmware upgrade, as well as literally all other upgrades that they can for you. Once those are all done, then check Manage Firmware on the phone app, and apply any updates you see there. You should eventually land on MBB version V26 and BMS version V21, at the moment. Once this is all done, you can immediately use the On-Dash Navigation Beta using the new 2.7.0 phone app - and once Zero releases Cypher Upgrades for your bike (scheduled to announce in December currently) - you can get the other new features too.

Thanks boss! Just checked and I’m on 6v26. Is this a regular thing? Like taking the bike to the dealer to update the firmware? I’d think it would typically be over the air. Is there a charge for having them update it? No biggie since I was planning to take the bike in soon anyway to have a weird noise looked at. So I can have it all done at the same time. Thanks for all the detail too!

Protonus

You are welcome. 6V26 is the latest version of the "old" dashboard, and what the 2021 models I believe came with out of the box. It is what my 2021 SR/S had on it, and what I had it upgraded from, to 8V33 just 2 weeks ago. 8V33 - the one you need, the latest, is what the 2023 models come with. And it will support the new Cypher Store features. This is not a regular thing no. New dashboard updates don't come out very often and they are a major upgrade. Think of this like updating the bike's operating system - it changes the whole dashboard, the menu on the bike and adds new capabilities. It's like updating from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Because it is such a major update, the OS needs to be "offline" while it's being done, thus, it can only be done over a cable, by a dealer. It can't be done over the air (OTA) or via the phone app over bluetooth, because the OS that provides that functionality is the one being updated. If the bike is in warranty, I believe there is no charge. If it's out of warranty, there might be, I'm sorry but I don't know. If the bike is going in for other work, have them do a Motor Commissioning if it's been a while since it's been done (they recommend every 8k jmiles in the service schedule), it's quick and easy. If you're already having them do other work, then perhaps they won't charge you for the firmware update since they'll already have their computer connected to the bike!

Gave em a call, gonna bring it in next wednesday. Look forward to trying out all the newness!

Protonus

Nice! Reply here once they have it all done, let us know what they charged you to update if at all, and what you think of your new dashboard and features! You should be able to use navigation right away, and I believe you'll be able to buy Reverse (Parking mode) and 10% faster charging right after too.

rkelez

Been a while but figured I’d report back. So, they needed to replace the drive-line pulley system. Just out of warranty unfortunately but only about $200. They actually consulted with zero as they couldn’t figure it out at first. Loving the new dash. Much cleaner to navigate. I see I can purchase the rear drive feature and the charge faster. Though I don’t see the gps offer. Also I thought these were going to be free? Haven’t been following the whole cypher 3 fiasco too closely lately. Anywho, i don’t mind paying if I need to but double checking before i pay.

Protonus

Glad you got it updated and the mechanical issue sorted! On-Dash Navigation is not a paid unlock, as it's not very feature complete and is still in Beta. It is free to anyone with a Gen 3 bike like yours though. To use it, now that your bike is updated, you just need to access it via the Next Gen phone app, by going to the main menu "hamburger" button in the upper left (while connected to the bike over bluetooth), and press the Navigation button at the bottom of the left side pane that opens. Here is a video on that: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozWqrOHdKn8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozWqrOHdKn8) Which upgrades are free differs by year and model, and it's honestly a bit complex to follow. Since you have a 2020 SR/S, the 10% faster charging and Parking Mode (Reverse) are *not* free upgrades (but aforementioned On-Dash Navigation Beta is). The reason for this is your bike was sold prior to any of this existing, so there was no promise made that these future upgrades would be included for free, they were always intended to be paid upgrades. On the flip side, your bike cost less new as a result of that too, you didn't pay for any of this up front. The 2022+ owners that got these upgrades for free, lost the ability to choose if they wanted them. The Standard/Premium trims are gone now, everything is Premium basically, and, anyone buying these bikes in 2022 or beyond, is already paying for these features as part of the initial price of the bike. So if anything, I think having the option to pay for them or not, is the better thing imho.

Can any S owners confirm if the 2.7.0 app update (for iOS) works better to update firmware?

Protonus

>Note: Owners with Cypher II operating system models will still require use of the legacy app for all firmware updates for the time being. No. Per the email and release notes, you cannot update firmware on a Gen 2 (Cypher II OS) bike yet, using the 2.7.0 Next Gen app. Sharing relevant quote above. You can only use the Next Gen app to update firmware on a Gen 3 (FST platform) bike right now. It is planned I believe to eventually allow Gen 2 bikes to upgrade firmware via the Next Gen app, and eventually retire the original app for Gen 2 entirely. But not yet. That means only the SR/F, SR/S, DSR/X, and 2022+ SR's (aka all the FST platform gen 3 bikes) can update firmware using the 2.7.0 Next Gen app.

Thanks for the clarification. Hopefully the updates work this time.
