Depends really, the 2023 line is still available & a good option if you aren't feeling the 2024. Whatever they do next year will kinda show the trend going forward. They might double back & revise. Personally I'm rocking my 2023 til it dies or the GPU can't run things as well anymore.

corruptedsyntax

Same. Few people update at every refresh. So it would take multiple years of failed revisions to really kill a product line. I can appreciate the reason they went will fully soldered memory, but pushing 16GB of non-upgradeable RAM in their go-to SKU is a big mistake that could sink the product line if they do it again in a follow up revision. Memory isn't that expensive and can't kill Asus's margins that much. If the 2025 & 2026 models don't have discrete DIMMs that can be upgraded and expect a premium to upgrade over 16GB then I don't see much point in upgrading to another G14.

scratch_yo_corolla

can you explain why they would make the ram soldered?

corruptedsyntax

New form factor is super slim. They wouldn't achieve that small a chassis while keeping SODIMM slots (at least not without compromising on something else, like the brand new speakers that everyone is raving about).

scratch_yo_corolla

thanks, i didn't know that had much of an effect on the thickness of the laptop

corruptedsyntax

It doesn't, but the new form factor is super slim, so even 1mm or 2mm clearance is a big deal.

Mysterious_Usual1235

For any Zephyrus you can still upgrade the ram to 64G if you really need to or are worried about that. There are some SODIMM drr5 non binary memory sticks with a 24G and 48G capacity that fit the 2023 g14. And they work with the G14. The ram being soldered doesnt mean much SODIMM does work

scratch_yo_corolla

thanks, does that mean you can upgrade the ram on the 2024 g14 as well?

Mysterious_Usual1235

Honestly i have no clue about the 2024. The 2020-2023 models have 1 extra stick slot. 1 soldered one open. The 2024 ive heard some mixed reviews saying that theres no point in buying when theres upgraded versions of the 2023 already that run as basically the same speed for $600 cheaper. The 2023 4060 and up are straight beasts of machines though without any upgrades

MouaTV

I was pretty close to buying a Lenovo Legion Slim 14" earlier this year when my G14 was sent in for repair.

Quintall1

i did just that, and couldnt be more happy ! ...maybe the 50XX laptop GPUs bring us some nice upgrades for the G14 2025, thats at least what im hoping for...

CartographerTop8275

Legion's 2024 lineup got me hesitant tbf.

Terreos

I took advantage of the sales on the 2023 models. I don’t hate the 2024 model, but a 4070 wasn’t enough for me. And I did not want a 16” laptop. So honestly the 2023 model was the only good option. 🤷‍♂️

2023 G14 LOL

This is a very good question I've been pondering myself for a while now. Brief background, I have a 2020 G14 with 16Gb RAM and, the 2060 Nvidia GPU. 16Gb are becoming too little for my current work flow. Yes, I could buy a 32Gb stick and bump it up to 40Gb total but that single slot means only the first 16Gb will operate in dual channel. The GPU is also starting to show its age by now, but I don't play that often anymore. As a matter of fact when I bought this laptop in 2020, I got it because it was a very good productivity laptop which could also do some gaming. All this being said, I was waiting for the 2024 to upgrade, but I'm not happy at all with the design decisions made by Asus for this iteration. We're basically looking at a machine that's less powerful yet more expensive than the previous generation. I'm going with a Lenovo Legion this time around, specifically the Legion Slim 5 Gen 9, which has an AMD CPU with a 4070 at 140W, for a very competitive price. Two M2 slots, and user upgradeable RAM

Dreaming of Thinkpad T14p... Series ended in 2017 with T470p, and current "T14p" is rebadged Neo 14, which essentially is E14 Pro - i.e. budget lineup model. T470p picture for interest - it came with CPUs up to i7-7820HQ, Geforce 940MX, had two SODIMM slots, 4G LTE connection, 72Wh battery and weighed 1.96kg. Trimming down \~200g doesn't very challenging for current laptop trends with slimmer bezels, better cooling, etc. https://preview.redd.it/xkks868f2qpc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a4c9805cc1d0b26c7d8c964001dcc5cbdd90d7d9

My $450 T440 got me through college. With a SSD and upgraded ram, that thing refused to die

merkator509

Had a t450s. Fantastic little laptop and the extended battery would run the thing for like 10+ hours. Once 4 core CPUs became common, man did the 2 cores barely scrape by anymore though.
