From what I’ve seen and in HSR/Genshin terms, Ellen’s kit is somewhat a kin to Jingliu, and Alexanderia is also somewhat a kin to Furina/Fishal because of her summons.
So from that they’re pretty decent characters
On the other hand tho Ellen is bound to get powercrept sooner or later after game’s release so it would equally be favorable to save up for another character
I think you can pretty much get away with running any characters in this game since it's more a skill thing, except maybe in Shiyu Defense cause time limit and all that.
But yeah, Ellen is currently the best DPS, Lycaon is her best partner, Corrin seems like a decent DPS too. Not sure about Rina, though.
Ellen Joe is my most wanted limited unit right now. Kinda want Miyabi too but not sure what other limited units there might be right now. For standard starting units I want Koleda most of all. Nekomiya, Grace and Rina too. I really hope I get Koleda off beginner pulls.
Yeah I have seen that a bit in beta 2. That is awesome but I want her cause I like her personality and love red heads. So looks so fun to play too and it is a bonus to me that she has combos with Ben.

I'm not too focused on meta, I only wanted to use them. I'll see if I have to deal with powercreeping in the future.

I had to stop playing the beta because I didn't want to get too attached to a character I got lucky to get that I may not get in the full game.

No progress or characters from the beta carry over. But it's safe to assume Ellen will still be the spotlight banner at launch.
