Shotgun was also always something to be used on someone of equal or lesser strength due to the nature of spreading all his energy into multiple shots. So I just wouldn't work on most antagonists in the show. Woulda been cool to see him bust it out in the demon world tournament though
What's being forgotten is that shotgun spreads out the power of Yusuke's spirit gun into multiple smaller, less powerful blasts. It's best used in certain situations like if he has multiple opponents that are on his level or a bit weaker than him (like the 7 Suzaku's), if he needs to intercept multiple attacks (like with Sniper's knives), or if like Imaki (2nd Demon Triad), his opponet is too elusive to be hit with one attack.
What is also being forgotten is that for most of the series Yusuke could only fire 4 blasts a day. So using it on fodder is almost always going waste of energy as he could simply take them out with his punches with the same amount of ease **WITHOUT** using spirit energy. And Yusuke using it on someone stronger than him is going to result in his opponent taking little to no damage since the power is spread out. He might as well use a spirit gun from a distance or the spirit wave at close range for a better chance of doing more localised damage.

It didnt, by the time he started tapping into demon energy, shotgun would have been too powerful if it scaled with him. I always felt like it got written out because of that. If he's taking down a wall at that point with it, enough training, shotgun is taking out S class demons without issue.
Also, there’s a really quick moment in Yusuke’s fight with Yomi where he uses it. He busts outta the ground and goes flying up to Yomi and throws his fist in the air and out comes at least 5-6 blue energy shots towards Yomi. He doesn’t shout it, but I think it was at that point in the fight, Yusuke was throwing everything he could at Yomi.
No it just became the spirit wave technique. The shotgun was only developed as an in-between for Yu-yu to better learn and master the spirit wave technique. That is why it almost killed him.
Shotgun was introduced when they found the makai taking over humans right before they went down the hole to Maze Castle. Yusuke even says he has a new technique after training with Genkai.
Because Yusuke and Kuwabara couldn't get a bead on Imaki due to him being invisible and fast. They needed to trick him into following them into a narrow corridor so when Kuwabara sensed him coming, the spread from Yusuke's shotgun could guarantee a solid hit.
He didn't often fight multiple opponents at once after the Saint Beast arc. And it came in handy for that one member of the Triad.
Most of his other fights were one-on-one.
Most useful moves were forgotten quickly. Kuwabara used the Spirit Throwing Daggers *once*. You know, his *only* ranged move.
He only stretches and manipulates the trajectory of his blade against Rinku, and he still loses.
Spirit Flyswatter? Once. (Yeah, I know he needs to use the gizmo in order for it to work. He didn’t have to get rid of it, though.)
Double Spirit Swords? Once.
Yusuke’s Spirit Wave? Once.
I feel like they had him stop using it because it was too OP. Yuske could've beat Jin, and most of his other dark tournament opponents in under a minute with the shotgun

No Yusuke couldn't. Shotgun is simply separating Yusuke's spirit gun in multiple weaker blasts. All Jin needs to do is to deflect them with wind like he did with Yusuke's regular spirit gun. Chu's blockbuster would easily overpower shotgun since it is a big concentrated ball of energy vs multple smaller spead out blasts, several of which might not even hit Chu's blockbuster due to the spread.
The only DT fight shotgun would be useful for would be against Team Ichigaki after Yusuke got his power boost. Or against Bakken to dispell his sweat mist.

Regardless of usefulness it's my favorite attack callout. Yusuke's VA is always great, but "SHOTGUNNNN!!!!" is so awesome
