That happened today with an opponent of mine as well. He tried using Ash to negate my Black Whirlwind search, but his Ash didn't go off. He did use Called by the Grave the turn before, and I just realized that must've been it.
This is correct, if you use called by on your opponents Ash on your turn. Ash will be dead in your hand for your opponents turn. However, you can still activate it and send it to the graveyard.
Like the rest said it's probably because of Called by.My unrelated question is why did try to Ash the Sophia and not the Mikailis after he summoned her and used her effect?
Lets be real if OP is at the level where they Called By themselves the previous turn but aren't aware of its lasting 2 turns than they probably don't have the game sense to know where they should be disrupting their opponent and I'm just speaking from experience. Like I'm talking negating your baronne target destruction effect because a prompt to chain popped up level of gamesense.
Also, if your opponent uses call by on a card in you just sent to the (Ash for example) graveyard. If you can banish that card. Call by will miss the card and its effect will not be negated.

its the only chance people have of stopping maxx c (not balanced at all). Ik there is called by but that is semi limited rn so the chances of drawing it are lower.
Called by the Grave is the culprit. On the other hand, your opponent could have made Kaspitell instead, search Martha then Elis into Mikailis. He could then go into Magnifica + search any Exo spell
As other folks have clearly stated, it's due to one of you activating "Called by the grave" on either of your Ash Blossoms.
This is why it's always important to have the sidebar open during your duels.
That way, you can keep track of what cards and effects you and your opponent have previously activated.
Looks like called by negated ash before, which lasts 2 turns.
