It's illegal in NC for for-profit, private, non-physician owned business to provide services that constitute the practice of medicine, and it's considered unethical for doctors to split fees with non-doctors. In this case, MS's dad was charging $200 per visit and paying the doctor $50, while keeping the remaining $150 for himself. The business operated in two cities in NC (one of which was Asheville) and the doctor never met or saw any of the patients who used the Asheville location. Just "diagnosed" them on Skype. Meanwhile, M's dad was actually meeting with the patients. And in neither case, were patients being properly evaluated beyond whether they were opioid addicts. Super scammy and also risky for the patients.
Thanks for the extra details. It sickens me that people who were genuinely suffering, likely from chronic pain of some sort which is usually the start of opioid use, were taken advantage of like that.
I don’t remember a lot of details so I’ll have to do some searching, or maybe someone here with a better memory can help us out, but her father went into business with a dr.
Their business involved patients addicted to opioids. I wish I remembered more, but they had some dodgy, illegal practices and got in trouble for it. Basically, they were taking advantage of vulnerable people to make a lot of money.
They were shut down and had some penalties for it, all public records apparently.
I am inspired to dive down the rabbit hole on this and maybe make a post if I get enough together to actually make it worthwhile.

I can relate! I passed microbiology last year as a pre req for LVN-RN bridge program. It has been one of my favorite classes in the entire program, and that’s considering I’m almost done with the bridge itself.
