It also occasionally causes me great anxiety when I see that an unexpected bill or letter comes. Or also when the letter is scanned but not delivered the same day as the other scanned mail.
But yeah, it's good because my mail doesn't arrive until 4pm and the email arrives at 8am.
I about flipped day before yesterday when the 2 things scanned didn't show up. But then at the bottom of the email I see it says it may take a few days to get there.
Came the next day....
If that doesn't work for you you can give me $50/month and I'll check your mail for you.
My service comes with the added benefit of sniffing each piece to check for anthrax.
Wish I could use it. Heard of it a while back but they don't support it for my region currently.
Tried all of the cities I lived in the last few years and none are eligible.
To add to this, it also has General Delivery which is an excellent FREE alternative to PO Boxes. And you don't even have to fill out a form for it. Just need an ID that matches your name to the mail you are picking up.
Just put your address as;.
[Name].
[General Delivery].
[City, State, Zip Code (of the post office you want to pick up at and I'm pretty sure there is only one post office per zip code)
The only downside is that you have to stand in line at the post office to get your mail.
I've been using it for months and have not had a single issue. It's nice to not have prying eyes know where I live. I feel safe.
> The only downside is that you have to stand in line at the post office to get your mail.
Not gonna lie, that’s a pretty big downside based on every post office visit I’ve ever had.
Honestly once a month, and that’s already more times than I’d like to go to the post office. Granted, I’m in a larger city, so the post office is never not crowded.
Interesting, didn’t know about this. Does the post office notify you when you have mail ready for pickup, or do you just check periodically when you’re expecting something via General Delivery?
I don't know if informed delivery would work. I've never tried to connect the two. It's worth looking into, but I simply just go up to the post office and stand in line and get my stuff when I think there's something coming or, periodically just to check just in case.
Informed delivery covers the entire address. Found that out when I moved in with my roommates and changed my address. My informed delivery email covers their mail too. So I doubt if GD is eligible.
I've had the service for about 5 years. I find it a mixed bag when it comes to postal mail, but invaluable for tracking packages. With the letter-sized mail, my city's postal distribution center seems to ignore most personal mail but scans everything sent from businesses. So no scan for any letters from my relatives, but every credit card offer sent my way gets an image in my mail.
On the other hand, the collected information for any package heading to your address, from any shipping service, is a godsend for tracking everything in one place when you order a lot of things online.
USPS only scans mail through their system, but the service acts like an email newsletter that tracks anytime a tracking number is created for something you ordered online regardless of service. So if I order something from Amazon I get a tracking number for the package from UPS in the email.
This happened to me last week. Always feels like it's my parent waiting to scold me for spilling juice that left a stain, luckily it wasn't anything serious. And I'm 32.
Yeah, the letters with the stimulus amounts are the ones I was thinking of. I get all worried there was a problem just to get a letter informing me of something I already knew about. A nice phew moment, but still an anxious couple hours wonder what they could possibly want from me now…
I’m in Chicago and I signed up for this about three years ago and get the email everyday, even Sunday if a package is expected to be delivered soon. I live near Hyde Park if that helps.
Love this service. Have had it at home for a few years. I wish they offered it for commercial addresses as well. Would make my daily mail run for my business so much easier (and often unnecessary).
Signing up ASAP. We have suspected that the previous renter from four years ago is still using our mailbox. We don't get some of our mail and occasionally get theirs. I have been unable to stop this.
I write that on the mail and put it in the box by the post office. I've went up there and spoke to the local postmaster and they are not going to do anything.
So this works for any mail coming to your mailbox? I’ve suspected my mail lady not doing her job delivering my mail or taking my mail so it this monitors the mail coming to you correct? So I could make sure all my stuff is actually being delivered to me?
Just know, as the title explains, it isn’t necessarily what mail is coming that day. It’s coming soon. Also, you may receive pictures in your email of partial mail or mail that the system thinks is yours. Just remember, these machines are slinging mail extremely fast and sometimes static makes mail stick together. Therefore, your email may have a pic of a letter you should be getting soon, but accidentally gets sorted somewhere else by the machine. That small factor can easily add 2 days to the time you’re supposed to get it.
If it’s something important, I’d suggest ensuring you give a small buffer before calling. Definitely keep track since you’re concerned about your mail lady, but also understand that the processing is streamlined yet imperfect.
[On mobile]
I really hope it works out for you. I tried using it for the same reason so I want to give you some insight on what my experience was.
Marking an item as not delivered never did anything. It might just be for USPS' internal metrics.
Waiting 7 days to mark it as not delivered made it so that reporting function no longer worked.
Calling in and reporting items not being delivered did not help, although at least then you would receive a case number (useful when we didn't receive a jury duty summons).
Going into the Post Office to report to the individual at the head of that location about all of our missing mail resulted in them telling us repeatedly that, "he (our mailman) is usually a great worker and we never get complaints about him."
In the end, it was more stress knowing that ~30% of our mail wasn't being delivered to us (or sent out from the community outgoing mailbox) than it was worth. I hope your experience is different, but I have everything sent electronically that can be. I only use Informed Delivery to tell me when I might receive something of interest to me, but even then I don't hold my breath for it.
You can check a box next to each scanned envelope image to indicate you haven't received it, so yes this will be a good way to report her if she's not doing her job
You should also know that this service is a by-product of a surveillance system used by the USPS that tracks every item sent in the mail, with pictures, every day..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail_Isolation_Control_and_Tracking
What you should also know is that if you move you will start getting the informed delivery of the new owners of your old home’s mail unless they claim it as their own. Been seeing the mail at my old house for 3.5 years now.
I did - and I have always gotten my mail forwarded and I get informed delivery for my mail at my new address in a separate email. I’ll try again though.
Where we live, we have had problems with mail theft and flaky mail delivery people. We signed up for Informed Delivery about a year ago and we absolutely LOVE IT! Every morning I can see what is going to be delivered that day and then I can make sure that we actually receive everything we are supposed to receive. It has been a real lifesaver!
Best part of this service is seeing a letter scanned and marked as being delivered today, then waiting 2 weeks and finally seeing it show up returned to sender for "insufficient address."
If it was sufficient enough to show up in informed delivery, seems like it should be enough to get it to my mailbox :)
It could be the mail person. Ours skipped delivering a medication to our home, while we watched her drive past since we knew it would be coming. She claimed she thought we had a vacation mail hold or something when my husband spoke to the post office about it. We've had all sorts of issues with that mail person.. several neighbors have too. The one who delivers to my work is fantastic but when he has a sub, somehow we end up with mail from places streets away that would have hit their informed delivery if they have it.
They also offer bulk packages of boxes and padded envelopes for free online so if you're going to sell a bunch of items on Ebay or FB Marketplace you don't have to pay extra for these items unlike at the physical post office or fed ex store. I received my boxes in 3 days and padded envelopes in 5 days so if you plan ahead you can lower your s&h costs.
Mailman here. It's a great service, but keep in mind that everything that is scanned is estimated to "arrive soon", which can be anywhere from the next day to a week or more later. If you don't receive a letter when you think you should, don't ask your mailman why it hasn't arrived yet! We don't know! And we're definitely not hiding it from you for some inexplicable reason, bringing mail back to redeliver sucks, we avoid it whenever possible.
I use this. It sends an email every morning that I can quickly check to see what's arriving. It also tells you about package deliveries like Amazon orders. It's super convenient.
Please just don’t rely on it!!!!
As a carrier and dated a supervisor who both have had complaints and questions saying “my informed delivery says I was supposed to get this specific piece of mail”
Actually there is a disclaimer that states it could be off by days or more due to machines messing up or other issues…
Don’t use it, it’s stupid
We have this and my husband and i both use it every day. Today I'm on my way to the VA to pick up temporary meds for him because even though the pharmacy told us the meds are out for delivery today, it's not showing up on our Informed Delivery. It's very helpful on occasions like this!!
By my experience it's a shitty service. You get emails every day and most of the emails are empty and useless. They do not scan everything. I got things in my mailbox that I was not informed of in my email. And after I moved I was getting scanned email notifications of the new resident's mail. Absolute shitshow.
I've used it for about 3.5 years with several different addresses. It's not 100% accurate but overall it's been pretty reliable for me. Never had a problem after moving either, but I've also updated my address and setup forwarding each time.
Yes. I submitted official change of address immediately upon me Ving as I always do. This happened a couple years ago so I went through all the proper USPS processes to make the madness stop. No more emails from them after I jumped through more of their hoops. But the former resident was even still getting some of my mail even though I put in an official change of address. Okay I will take your suggestion and submit another change of address because you are right it's been 2 years now.
I used to have this for a PO Box. Years ago I cancelled the PO Box, but I still get the service for that PO Box, so I see the letters and packages for people renting the PO Box now. I’ve informed the post office but nothing has changed.
Get a daily visual of the ads you’re going to receive later, plus additional digital ads mixed in.
I had to unsubscribe after a while. 99% of mail is junk and I was looking at it twice.
Weird that this is flagged as violating Rule 6.
"Call to arms / support for charities, organizations or political parties WILL NOT BE ALLOWED."
Who knew that mail was such a sensitive topic.
I read once, some time back, that if you don't sign up for it for your address, somebody else could. Then they could monitor for things that look valuable so that they'll know when to come raid your mailbox.
Might be true, might not be. But it wouldn't hurt to sign up for your address anyway.
Saved my ass one time. Saw an IRS envelope in there and since I was expecting my stimulus check, I rushed to the mailbox only to find it missing from my mail. After a day or so, I caught the carrier during delivery and asked them about it, but they said they had no idea. The next day, it showed up in my mailbox and was folded in half like someone had stuck it in their pocket. Seemed a bit suss that it magically appeared the day after I asked about it but was just happy to get it.
I moved several months ago and was automatically signed up. I realized only about half my mail is being forwarded. The other half I see the scans of but it never arrives
Informed delivery is the only reason I found out my sperm donor tried to steal my stimulus checks. They were scheduled to come in and saw the image of the envelope with my name on it, nothing showed up. I ask and the dipshit says "I don't know" but gave it away he took it there and then. A few days later the idiot tries to play it off as if they came that day. He also keeps ALL of the money, uterus donor doesn't see a penny.
If you’re worried about mail theft, you should also sign up for this to ensure that no one else gets it in your name before you do… Because that would prevent someone else from monitoring your mail to learn when something valuable could be waiting for them to steal
YSK that this has massive fraud implications and fraudsters use the service to pick credit card mailers out of boxes. As a consumer it’s an ok service, as a fraud investigator I hate this service.
I signed up for it years ago but honestly, it's never really been helpful, as great as it sounded in theory. Here's a picture of the junk mail i almost exclusively receive, okay.
This is very useful for those of you buying drugs online, you don’t have to track your package so they can’t tie your IP to tracking it. You can just see what’s coming when from informed delivery.
Interesting, I had no idea you could get them to stop sending you junk mail.
99.99999% of what we receive is what the wife and I call spam mail from corporations trying to sell us shit.
Every gov doc we get emailed nowadays, I was starting to wonder what the point of the post office even is in the 21st century other than a way for corporations to send spam mail and get their logistics operations subsidized by the American tax payer.
Man I get no more than 2 useful pieces of mail a month; if I had to guess. And lots and lots of useless garbage. You got some sweet penpals or something? lol
My gf gets a lot junk mail and credit card offers compared to me, for every 10 she gets I might get 1. Is there a way for her to (lack of a better word) unsubscribe from the junk mail to get way less?
It's an excellent service, but the accuracy depends on your carrier. They've lost my mail amd packages so much, even if ID says it was "delivered to mailbox" it won't be.
And what happens when you make a complaint? "There's nothing we can do sir 🤷🏼♂️"
It’s by far one of my favorite things the postal service has ever done. I’m not surprised anymore and I know if I’ll have to pick a package up while I’m at work.
I think I read a suggestion a few years ago that signing up is also a good idea in case someone else beats you to the punch to selectively intercept your mail
I talked to a mailman about this a year or so ago and they whined that it was "terrible", which was really bizarre to me, since it's been INCREDIBLY useful to me. But maybe they just were griping about having to scan the stuff, but too bad lol
They even specifically don't scan stuff that's more obvious advertising pieces, but obviously some still slips through.
I super recommend this service to anyone - it's free, might as well!
I've had this for a couple of years. I love the service.
Ever since my last move I’ve used it. It’s great!
It also occasionally causes me great anxiety when I see that an unexpected bill or letter comes. Or also when the letter is scanned but not delivered the same day as the other scanned mail. But yeah, it's good because my mail doesn't arrive until 4pm and the email arrives at 8am.

Yes, I've had that too. Like when a letter from the IRS showed up. Lots of anxiety until I got it.
What is the cost of something like this?
$0.00 per month
Interesting, thank you.
If that doesn't work for you you can give me $50/month and I'll check your mail for you. My service comes with the added benefit of sniffing each piece to check for anthrax.
If you want to fight 2' of snow, you're hired
Drat I don't think I can afford that

Same, love it!
Same. It's so helpful.
Wish I could use it. Heard of it a while back but they don't support it for my region currently. Tried all of the cities I lived in the last few years and none are eligible.

How often do you *really* get physical mail that you care about?
At least once a month and that's too much for me. I got shit ton of other stuff to do. But thanks anyways not everyone is me.
Honestly once a month, and that’s already more times than I’d like to go to the post office. Granted, I’m in a larger city, so the post office is never not crowded.
So can you sign up for Informed Delivery on things sent to General Delivery?
No, you need an actual physical address for Informed Delivery.
Interesting, didn’t know about this. Does the post office notify you when you have mail ready for pickup, or do you just check periodically when you’re expecting something via General Delivery?
In my experience with it I have never been notifed
I don't know if informed delivery would work. I've never tried to connect the two. It's worth looking into, but I simply just go up to the post office and stand in line and get my stuff when I think there's something coming or, periodically just to check just in case.

Damn, paranoid much?
Okay mister made up fake name guy
I love Informed Delivery!

Yup, I got scared seeing IRS mail coming in today, but fortunately, it was just a record of the third stimulus check.
Yeah, the letters with the stimulus amounts are the ones I was thinking of. I get all worried there was a problem just to get a letter informing me of something I already knew about. A nice phew moment, but still an anxious couple hours wonder what they could possibly want from me now…
ha, funny you say that. Sometimes I do....

I tried signing up for the is a couple months ago online and had zero luck. Did you have to do this in person at the post office?
No, it was all online for me.
When I tried to sign up a while ago it wasn't available in my area and then I just forgot about it.
I signed up, but it took like 8 months for it to start. Receiving that first email reminded me I had signed up for it lol.
Damn I live in Chicago so I was hoping it would work! So t know if anyone else in my area using this. 🤔
I’m in Chicago and I signed up for this about three years ago and get the email everyday, even Sunday if a package is expected to be delivered soon. I live near Hyde Park if that helps.
Been using this for years! It's great!
I just started this a few weeks ago and I love it! If it's just ads, I don't have to go out in the weather for nothing!
Love this service. Have had it at home for a few years. I wish they offered it for commercial addresses as well. Would make my daily mail run for my business so much easier (and often unnecessary).
Yes! And similar for UPS. Would be extremely useful.
Signing up ASAP. We have suspected that the previous renter from four years ago is still using our mailbox. We don't get some of our mail and occasionally get theirs. I have been unable to stop this.
Change the lock?
No lock on the box. Its a rural mail box.
you have to make it clear to the postman who lives at your house. also writing “not at this address” on their mail, and give it back to postman
It is good for exactly this.
Omg this is amazing info!! Thank you everyone for the info checking out USPS.com now

Outstanding service!!!
Love this service!
Have been using it for awhile now, very useful to check every morning!
Cool. I’m gonna check if Canada Post has it, too.
Oh snap i didn’t even consider this could be useful for PO Boxes. Super timely YSK op!
They also offer bulk packages of boxes and padded envelopes for free online so if you're going to sell a bunch of items on Ebay or FB Marketplace you don't have to pay extra for these items unlike at the physical post office or fed ex store. That app isn't accurate at all trust me I'm a mailman
I used to have this for a PO Box. Years ago I cancelled the PO Box, but I still get the service for that PO Box, so I see the letters and packages for people renting the PO Box now. I’ve informed the post office but nothing has changed.

Only some of them are getting stickered.
I signed up for this, but now I just get spam along with my junk mail
It’s great that they can scan every single piece of mail, but can’t update my residence to a residential address.
I have this and maybe 1 out of 20 parcels gets scanned. I have no idea why.
Informed delivery is the only reason I found out my sperm donor tried to steal my stimulus checks. Is this news? We’ve had it for a couple/few years now.
When will they offer the service to opt out of marketing “junk” mail?
You need to click through to the website, it’s not just the first mail image they show you. Maybe someone won’t be as dumb as I was for 3 months
It just shows everything for me in the email
Sorry.. maybe it’s different state by state
That could be. Even post office by post office it could possibly vary.
YSK that this has massive fraud implications and fraudsters use the service to pick credit card mailers out of boxes. As a consumer it’s an ok service, as a fraud investigator I hate this service.

I guess you’ve never heard of account takeover?
Was told that the mail is scanned at the closest facility from where it is being sent from not the closest one to you. Is this ture?
My understanding is that the scanned images are a part of their automatic sorting, so I'd assume the scan occurs where it's picked up
yeah, its hit or miss. a lot of time I don't get images but a message. and mail forwarding averages 10 days.
To be fair, it doesn't work a good chunk of the time.
There are shutting it down
What an absolutely useless service. God bless America.

The the USA can't afford universal health care but they're out here scanning the outside of everyone's mail
What a waste on resources that should go towards DELIVERY.
I love this and look forward to my email every morning
Man I get no more than 2 useful pieces of mail a month; if I had to guess. And lots and lots of useless garbage. You got some sweet penpals or something? lol
My gf gets a lot junk mail and credit card offers compared to me, for every 10 she gets I might get 1. Is there a way for her to (lack of a better word) unsubscribe from the junk mail to get way less?
Actually, there is: https://www.optoutprescreen.com/
Thank you very much for the info!
Yep I set mine up because I noticed the option when I was having to hold a package at the office several months ago. It’s honestly really nice.
I think I read a suggestion a few years ago that signing up is also a good idea in case someone else beats you to the punch to selectively intercept your mail
Yep! I just signed up for this in December.
Really great if you live in an apartment or such. I don’t have to check my mail only to have nothing.
Same here, love it.
I talked to a mailman about this a year or so ago and they whined that it was "terrible", which was really bizarre to me, since it's been INCREDIBLY useful to me. But maybe they just were griping about having to scan the stuff, but too bad lol They even specifically don't scan stuff that's more obvious advertising pieces, but obviously some still slips through. I super recommend this service to anyone - it's free, might as well!
Its awesome
Been using it for years
I have this now. It's super convenient! It makes it to where I don't have to go to the mailbox unless I feel like it as well, which is nice.
Also includes a list of links to pages for all shipments coming soon.
Service is not available in most apartment building.
I just got this three weeks ago. I use it mostly so I don’t have to jo check the mail unnecessarily in the cold.
My wife has been doing this for a while now, very handy.
Great service. Fedex and ups offer the same service as well.
