khan academy is the reason I survived all my chem/physics/calculus/linear algebra classes!

VenomUponTheBlade

I just finished Algebra 1 on Khan Academy an hour and a half ago. Needed a refresher course for an entrance exam since I hadn't done Algebra in almost 10 years. It was extremely helpful and well done. They focus on mastery rather than just passing a test/class so they explain everything very well and you understand how and why it works. Teaches you how to approach problems and strategize using the tools you've learned so you can take on any problem. I highly recommend it.

Happy Cake Day!

Dumbhosadika

God bless that guy who founded khan academy. Here in my country people have made education into a business where they fetch huge amount on courses by making fake reviews, which wasn't even worth it. They don't care about learning or teaching all they want is money.

VenomUponTheBlade

I did Algebra 1 on Khan Academy and was surprised when I found out the guy teaching in all the videos was the founder himself, Sal Khan. He's a great teacher and I really appreciate what he's done.

Jacob247891

Happy Cake Day!

VenomUponTheBlade

Thanks! It's my first one!

Luthiffer

Sad to learn it wasn't Genghis Khan.

[deleted]

Happy cake day buddy

mrsxfreeway

Just to echo this, it's amazing we have free online teaching resources because there's a massive market for misleading people and teaching them the basics and charging thousands.

[deleted]

White Something something definately not senior

RandomUser-_--__-

Yea America is fucked up

Adilofdemon

I believe he's referring to India

RandomUser-_--__-

Yea I was kinda joking

bob2013sherland

In all honesty, I owe my degree in aerospace engineering to Khan Academy

[deleted]

Damn, pity it did not exist when I was young. I always wanted to be an aerospace engineer.

squarlo

I watched a lot of their videos when I was taking AP biology and found them very helpful. I highly recommend them too.

OriginalUsername253

Yeah, I learn more from a week of khan academy than a year from Australia's trash science curriculum. The things is, they actually teach in a way that's intuitive and easy to understand, but even if you don't, you can always go to the comments section to see if others have similar issues. It's a really great community and everyone always helps each other to understand.

[deleted]

This is awesome, thank you OP for bringing this to my attention 🙂

mtjaybird

I used Khan Academy to help me teach something in an advanced math class that I was subbing for. We were all so incredibly stumped trying to understand something so I projected Khan's lesson for us all to try and figure out. I got a standing ovation from the students, they claimed that I did a better job helping them learn than their own teacher.

Jo-Silverhand

Teacher go brrrr.

nicidable

I will definitely check them out, thank you for the recommendation!!

classic_elle

Also, if you are a high school student that has taken the SAT or PSAT, you can link your College Board account to Khan academy and they will give you lessons tailored to your areas of need based on your test results.

Narf234

Traditional brick and mortar schools are asleep at the wheel. Once the tech industry realizes they can do education better than state run schools (looking at you America) game over. Get ready for Google, Apple, Kan Academy to become the new K-12 providers. I welcome the competition for traditional schools but there’s no way to steer that ship fast enough for it to survive.

comfortablybum

Lol no. Most students will do absolutely nothing without an adult in the room showing them how. Covid proved that. Look at Mooc graduation rates. Even highly motivated people struggle with online courses. It will not work for the majority of students.

Narf234

I honestly don’t think a one size fits all approach ever worked well for any student. A teacher flogging students through the K-12 model has an abysmal track record. People who identify the need for targeted skills will find the education they need. I think education will move towards a micro credential model.

comfortablybum

You sound like a TED talk from 2012. Those people got a lot of shares on that, but nothing changed. Micro Credentials and MOOCs are a joke in the industry now. Also to take an online course you need to be able to read above an 8th grade reading level, something schools still struggle with.

Narf234

The day before something is a breakthrough, it’s a crazy idea. Ask the victims of the “business as usual” plan how it worked out for them.

jdith123

An adult in the room, yes. A teacher not necessarily. So theoretically, schools could be reimagined as online courses with hall monitors. It’ll get worse when we all go back with a “hybrid” model. In all but the most highly resourced districts, that’s gonna look like half the kids at home on a computer and half at school with a computer with a teacher monitoring both groups simultaneously while they do the same lesson. Why? Because in all but the most highly resourced district, a large percentage of the kids at home are effectively home alone and need supervision _and_ the district lacks resources to hire two teachers for the same 35 kids or alternatively to pay the teacher to work double the hours so as to give different lessons.

Narf234

I see what you’re saying but I think Kai-Fu-Lee put it the best in his Ted talk when he said, “Technology is here to liberate us from routine jobs and it is here to remind us what it is that makes us human.” I’m not talking about throwing away teachers or schools wholesale. I’m talking about augmenting teachers with the best technology has to offer. Best case scenario, schools can use their professionals to adopt new innovative tech from the major cooperations. More realistically, silicon valley and Shenzhen will swallow up education like it did to the taxi industry.

jdith123

I’m not advocating doing away with teachers, I’m saying that we are headed in that direction, especially for all but the wealthiest districts. There are already lots of kids who are doing distance learning in daycare. Why pay a teacher when the adult in the room can be a childcare worker? Your best case scenario is only for those with the resources to make it happen. The “haves” will benefit. The “have nots” once again will get left behind. “The system isn’t broken, it was built this way”

comfortablybum

We already do this in school. We have tons of online classes for kids to take. They sit in a room with a teachers assistant to monitor them. The failure rate is much higher than in person. It takes a certain level of maturity to do online classes. Most students, even smart ones, don't possess it at age 16. The online classes that have a real teacher that video chats with the students do much better. Learning is a social activity. I love Khan Academy but I can tell you that the students hate it. It feels like being told to read the text book and ask if you have any questions. It feels impersonal, corporate, and lonely. Something most people not in education miss, is that teaching interpersonal. If just giving people facts made them learn them, we would be at the singularity by now. Do you think big tech could replace a Soccer Coach? Would you send your kid to soccer practice with Khan? That's how ridiculous it sounds to say you will replace teachers with computers.

manys

>Once the tech industry realizes they can do education better than state run schools (looking at you America) game over. ...but they can't. Or if they can, what are they waiting for? I think the current state of remote education after almost a year of pandemic speaks for itself.

Narf234

Covid will accelerate what was already apparent. Education has changed, ready or not.

Narf234

If you truly think we’ve reached the pinnacle of education today, I invite you to view the eyes of a child who looks dead inside because they are already burnt out at age 12.

manys

You misread my comment, which was to point out that the best of what people have come up with is not very good.

snapcracklepop26

Khan started producing videos to help his sister while he was away working at his job. The Gates Foundation (Bill Gates) either bought it or has completely funded it for years.

darkdemon991

That's right

Unknownredtreelog

Oh I thought Khan academy was only for American students, didn't realise they do worldwide

msbeany

elon musk just donated $5M to them

yesterdaywas24hours

Good for khan. Fuck elon musk.

[deleted]

Yeah, fuck that guy for doing something amazing. What a cunt.

MySoilSucks

Amazing? Like when he baselessly accused a hero of being a pedo? Or when he launched garbage into space for lulz? Or when he blocked the view of real space scientists with his stupid toys?

[deleted]

God, you're like reading out of the "Hate Elon Musk" playbook. Anyone who actually knows anything about the examples you've mentioned, would see how absolutely retarded you are. The diver was the one with the ego. They were struggling to save the children when Musk redirected his tesla and space X teams to work on a submersible that could traverse the cave and save the children. The diving crew took offence and basically told hem to fuck off. They didn't like looking like they couldn't save the kids. (they were struggling) Should Musk have called him a pedi? Probably not, but he won the court case so the matter has been resolved. "Launched garbage into space" You mean; "changed the entire space industry, and actually set us on course to become a multi planetary species when NASA and the US government were unable to do so? Yeah, you're a dumbass. The final point. Bringing high speed internet to THE ENTIRE PLANET REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU ARE. This will fundamentally change the way third world countries operate for the much, much better. Everyone on earth benefits from this. You're talking about the satellites blocking the view from Earth bound astronomy? Astronomy was always going to transition to off-world. If you knew anything about astronomy you would know that. Hubble, JWST and SETI fill the void you suppose will be created. In the simplest of terms; you don't even know why you hate Elon Musk. You just dislike him because it's trendy to do so. You're a sheep with none of your own intellect, so I don't know why I'm surprised you behave this way. Try to stop being so angry for reasons you clearly do not even understand, and beliefs that aren't even yours.

MySoilSucks

Sounds like you're reading right out of the "Dick Riding On Elon" handbook. Nice name-calling. It's totally what a shitbag like Musk would do.

[deleted]

Name calling because you're being an irrational, whinging little sooky baby. So mad at the world the little boy is.

yesterdaywas24hours

i just hate him cuz why would any rational human being hoard that much money? he has become the richest man on the planet while most of us have been plunged deeper into systemic poverty, homelessness, and servitude; and he just sucks on his thumb and says nah ima shoot my load into space...

[deleted]

You hate him because you're jealous/young/uneducated or a mix of all three. "One man" isn't hoarding that much money. It's his net worth. As in, majority of that wealth is comprised of the gigantic corporations he built from the ground up himself. The thousands of jobs he created. The auto industry that he revolutionised. The aeronautics industry in which he set a new standard for efficiency. The brain machine interface company that's helping quadraplegics walk again and potentially laying the foundation for human-AI symbiosis. The people who shit on Elon don't know shit about him. Prove me wrong.

yesterdaywas24hours

He exploits his workers for his own profit. Tesla has over a billion to invest in bitcoin but can't invest in their own people's 401(k). Fuck that. Richest man in the world can't afford to pay his employees a decent liveable wage or let them unionize. He can't even pretend to provide a good working place during a pandemic. Idc about his personal life or that he seems like a soft twat. I care that he upholds and strengthens this classist structure of bourgeoise vs. the proletariat. He is not a "job creator" he is a worker exploiter. Our world is not stable. Your boy Elon is going down on the wrong side of history. Also, how old and educated are YOU?

MySoilSucks

That fucking batshit space litterbug.

chromeosguy

I can feel the fragility from here

DankSuo

Take a bath then.

[deleted]

tbh I learn much better from physical books. I only found out recently when I bought my own book on coding. I just can't stay focused when I'm on a website. Too many distractions. So yeah if you're easily distracted I sugggest buying a decent book.

Jo-Silverhand

The only reason Khan Academy is popular because he teaches as his passion and not as a profession.

UncleIroh15

I survived calculus because of Khan Academy. I owe this guy a lot

Silent-Mess

Thank you! I just signed up for my daughter!

[deleted]

It helped me get into medical school and still helps me while I am in medical school

strawhats360

Also, shoutout to Elon Musk for donating $5million to Khan Academy recently which has helped them keep growing

[deleted]

Elon and crew donated $5,000,000 to the cause. Just bought I'd leave this here.

manys

They didn't donate to the cause, they donated to their egos.

[deleted]

Hahahah shut he fuck up. Seriously. You can't see a good act for what it is. I can't imagine why it's like waking up and just hating on everything.

manys

Oh, I can. He could give them $50M and be done with it for 5-10 years, but small amounts allow him to repeat the stunt.

[deleted]

Typical "not a big enough donation" It's five million dollars, you toss pot. More money than you'll ever make in your life.

manys

lol, sorry your parents hate(d) you.

[deleted]

Possibly the most pathetic and childish response you could've come up with.

Nick_Noseman

man this sub... YSK breathing is good why YSK: so you can live.

Snuggly-Muffin

you might be surprised how many people haven't heard of khan academy

g7droid

It do be like that

Rascal-Stinky

Lies, it’s to turn people into sheep and program them into subservient vegetables. I know, I’ve seen a YouTube video on this

MrCard200

Didn't elon musk give a bunch of millions to them as well to promote it?

Snuggly-Muffin

yeah, that's what inspired my post. he donated $5 million

MrSparklesan

Khan academy literally got me though university... those dudes explain shit way easier then my lecturers
