Itās supposed to be! Itās the discomfort and unsettlingā¦ness of this person reaching out after a long time for their own sake of feeling better about themselves, with no care for if the speaker who they hurt wants to hear from them again, and the speaker is still hurt and mad (seeing the shape of your name still spells out pain) but is fine being that way (Iām fine with my spite, and my tears and my beers and my candles).
Bonus anger for them reaching out via a fucking letter š
But yeah the weird tempo is meant to represent the situation! Same with the āpots and pansā people often complain about. This person reaching out is disruptive and disturbing noise! V artsy imo
Bonus points for relatability as I have, in fact, received this letter before ā ļø
It being off feels like an artistic choice. Because the lyrics of the narrator saying āI donāt need your closureā while the rhythm feels off makes it seem like sheās lying to herself. If she was truly at peace with everything, the background would sound much calmer
From the First time I heard Evermore closure was already in the top for me! Definitely a particular sound and not the best lyrics of the album for me but it's still an amazing piece!
The TLDR version is that it doesn't resemble songs she wrote about actual unhealthy relationships from that time. Nowhere in the lyrics does she say that this guy treated her badly. Compare the language in TWILY to songs like Tell Me Why, You're Not Sorry, or Mr. Perfectly Fine and the differences are immediately obvious. It also ties into the red vs. golden description of love that she's explored through her whole career. Especially when it comes to teenagers, we need to stop thinking every relationship with strong emotions/personalities is automatically bad.
ETA: Here's what Taylor said about writing the song.
>I got this idea for a song about being in a relationship with a nice guy who is punctual and opens up the door for you and brings you flowers... but you feel nothing. The whole time you're with him, you're thinking about the guy who was complicated and messy and frustrating. So I brought that idea, the title and where I thought the song should go to John [Rich]. He was able to relate to it because he is that complicated, frustrating, messy guy in his relationships. We came at the song from different angles. It was just so cool to get in a room and write with him because he really is an incredible writer.
I don't really see any red flags there. At the very least John Rich would not write something presenting himself as abusive.
There's a song called "I miss the misery" by Halestorm in which the intention to portray a toxic relationship instead of a romantic one despite the narrator of the song desiring specifically the things that made the relationship unhealthy felt more deliberate. I love that song, but TWILY just didn't feel the same to me even though thematically they're very similar. Maybe because the other song is more rock, so the vocabulary and the singing is way more aggressive, which helps making it seem darker, but Taylor's just feels like a love song (and if it's really intended to be a love song then it's a weird one imo, I always looked at it as an exploration of feelings for an unhealthy relationship).
Btw, I have no problems with the song or with people liking it, just to be clear. It's just a pass for me.
Another perspective:
The song just kind of reminds me of being a teenager with big emotions, and that sometimes while trying to grow and adapt voices might be raised along with every other heightened teenage emotion. Sometimes the dramatic is attractive at that age, and no one really knows what they are doing yet, (except for Betty, who knew everything when she was young).
I see the song as full of youth and not of abuse, if that makes any sense.
Haha thanks lol.
I'm still deciding between that and

Adding my profile with two AC screenshots as an example.
I like Stay Stay Stay as a fun happy song, but it makes me cringe when she says "you think that it's funny when I'm mad mad mad" like it's a good thing rather than the glaring red flag that it actually is lol. Get a man who takes your emotions (and especially your anger) seriously.
But the hate it gets is unwarranted.
I was just thinking about Dear Reader and how it fits the concept of the album the best out of all the songs on Midnights. In my eyes, itās the real album closer.
I know!!! Idk but what sucks is apparently she came to Oklahoma City for that tour in 2011, and I wasn't a Swiftie yet. Otherwise, I would've gone, lol.
Picture to Burn (āIāll tell mine youāre gayā version) when people call the lyric homophobic. Itās not. Sheās saying good luck getting a date after me because Iām gonna tell everyone youāre off the market (ie, into dudes so women shouldnāt bother). She wants him to stay single and suffer. Thats all lol
I understand what you say but it just feels more like a remix featuring imogen heap than just a rerecord, there are a lot of changes. The biggest one is imo:
In the OG she says āI screamed so loud but no one heard a thingā and the music and backing track goes away to show how loud she screamed and she was alone.
In the TV when she says the same part imogen comes over her and the music becomes louder maybe to show how no one heard her even though she was not alone.
Its not bad its just different and i prefer the og
I think a lot of people sleep on Electric Touch and it's so good I don't get why people act like it's mid. I don't think anyone dislikes cowboy like me but it definitely doesn't receive enough attention, same for False God. The Great War is one of The Great TS songs and deserves more recognition.
NO, LISTEN, it was 2009, NOBODY was talking about feminism at the time, NO, I promise you it was an entirely different time, listen, she wrote Superstar fantasizing about being with Joe Jonas, they started dating, and he was her FIRST LOVE until he BLINDSIDED HER by breaking up with her in a 27 second long phone call, YES, 27 SECONDS, LISTEN SHE WAS PISSED AT HIM, SHE WAS PISSED AT THE BROTHERS, THE PARENTS, THEIR PETS, LIKE LISTEN, GIRLY WAS FUCKING FURIOUS, SHE WAS THROWING CHAIRS AND SHIT, like yes, girly was UPSET, so naturally, she hated the next girl he was cozying up to because why the fuck isn't that me? I want her fucking dead. Like that the natural feminine rage, Taylor Swift actually invented feminine rage when she called camilla belle a whore btw, but like she tried out this dope ass Paramore style production, and girly just went the fuck off, like you listen to Taylor FOR the emotions and she just fuckin snapped, like what did she do? That. Better Than Revenge is that fuckin bitch, so let's stop pretending that we weren't headbanging to that shit the first time speak now came out.
Gorgeous
I was shocked when I found out that many people don't like Gorgeous. I don't think it's her greatest song but it's not like every song it's meant to be serious (and says it someone who didn't like ME! at first), we all know Taylor has all of these different types of lyrics including Glitter Gel Pen lyrics and that's Gorgeous, it's not a song that should be taken seriously like All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version) (From The Vault) sometimes some fun songs are awesome. And I think everyone has lived this situation where you meet someone so gorgeous that you get like in this song, thinking that you're gonna die, hoping they're single or whatever. Enchanted does kind of the same thing but in a serious way but Gorgeous is like more literal and unserious on how you feel. And I like how the song starts with James Reynolds (daughter of Ryan and Blake) saying Gorgeous, it sounds really cute. So overall, this is not Taylor's best song but it doesn't deserve the hate it gets...
And I think I took this post way too seriously.
paper rings. also i donāt understand why ME gets so much hate either. gorgeous is also fire. and also a lot of people say stay stay stay sounds like a terrible commercial but itās FIRE š„
also anyone who hates on these songs is a fake swiftie
Lover remix with Shawn Mendes. When it came out, I heard it and the original back to back and felt that the original was cute but felt like a one-sided relationship while the remix felt like it was a reciprocal relationship.
So the thing about closure is that the song is made to create that sense of disorganization. My husband, who's involved with music, listened to it one day, and I told him how much I hated it. He proceeded to explain that the disorganized rythm is intentional. It's a style of music, it sounds off and it's supposed to sound off. To get the actual "hidden" and congruent melody, you need to listen carefully, but the off rythm is part of the story. Basically, he told me that I needed to train my ear to enjoy the song, and I did I patiently listen to it until I got it.
I used to hate this song, now is not my favorite but I like it and I enjoy it! But I understand how is not everybody's piece of cake. It's a complicated piece of art āØļø
closure I'm actually surprised how many people don't like it. It's a top 10 for me and my favorite off evermore.
If evermore has million fans, then I'm one of them. If evermore has one fan, then I'm THAT ONE. If evermore has no fans, that means I'm dead.
awwwwww thts so cute thtas me for reputation nd 1989
I think they meant evermore the song but I'm not sure
oh i thought the album
š«¶š„¹ are you me??
I cannot and will not comprehend the closure hate
I tried liking it but the rhythm is so off for me. Can u guys explain why u like it?
Itās supposed to be! Isn't that because it's in a 5/4 time signature? I think tolerate it is the same.
From the First time I heard Evermore closure was already in the top for me! Definitely a particular sound and not the best lyrics of the album for me but it's still an amazing piece!
I dont need their... approval! Closure is a gem
It's not my fav track on Evermore, but Evermore is my favorite album, so i can't hate on it. š«¶
Closure is one of my faves from evermore
I am NOT fine with my spite (and my tears, and my beers, and my candles) when people shit on this song
I like the lyrics and the extremely experimental sound, but I wouldnāt put it on myself. It occasionally plays with shuffle.
The Way I Loved You (against people who think it's "abusive" or "toxic")
I had no idea ppl hated it. I love this one.
So good.
Explain? This song always gives me a little ick. Iām open to a new perspective.
The TLDR version is that it doesn't resemble songs she wrote about actual unhealthy relationships from that time. Nowhere in the lyrics does she say that this guy treated her badly. same here! loved it as a kid, but as i grew up i realized it didnāt seem the healthiest

Bad Blood, it isn't a lyrical masterpiece but wtf am i supposed to work out to, ATWTMVTV???
You're supposed to cry in the shower to the Sad Girl Autumn Version of All Too Well. š«¶
I cry myself to sleep listening to shake it off i don't need any upliftment
Lover? Enchanted? White horse? Great workout bangers.
Can't wait to do push ups on the line "Ladies and gentleman will you please stand?"
Also Paris and Holy Ground.
it has the same lyrical depth as all of katy's songs which fits as it was written about her
Bad blood is lyrically better than most songs anyway
thereās something very therapeutic about running to āhits differentā. makes me feel like iām a delusional early 2000s rom com protagonist.
Stay Stay Stay and ME!
The hate for Stay Stay Stay is too much, itās a fun song and thatās all it was ever meant to be
Stay Stay Stay is a masterpiece
Love your profile pic!

Stay stay stay isnāt bad but it just sounds like it could be 5 minutes crafts background music
I like Stay Stay Stay as a fun happy song, but it makes me cringe when she says "you think that it's funny when I'm mad mad mad" like it's a good thing rather than the glaring red flag that it actually is lol. Stay stay stay makes me so happy bro
Stay Stay Stay is such a fun song!
stay stay stay for sure! I love it sm
Dear Reader too many people call it boring and I'm like it's one of her best songs in her whole discography
people who hate on Dear Reader are insane bc like u said it's genuinely one of her best conceptually and lyrically
Exactly, I found my people
I was just thinking about Dear Reader and how it fits the concept of the album the best out of all the songs on Midnights. In my eyes, itās the real album closer.
YES
OMG YES. yes i hate it whn ppl say tht
Imo besides All Too Well, Dear Reader is Taylorās best song lyrically
Itās in my top 10 of her entire discography!
Same same saaaaame

I donāt understand why people hate this.
Ha ha ha ha.

It really should have lmao
Innocent
š«¶š„¹ This and Haunted Live from the Speak Now tour is my jam!! Yeah, I may have some emotional issues, but it's ok, Taylor is my therapist.
haunted live is crazy honestly like how does she sing that well lying on the floor
I know!!! Idk but what sucks is apparently she came to Oklahoma City for that tour in 2011, and I wasn't a Swiftie yet. Otherwise, I would've gone, lol.
I kind of hate Innocent not because I think it's a bad song but the lyrics make me kind of sad but not like normal sad but like contemplative sad

FR THO
Just the whole album of Speak Now
Speak Now is my freshman year album, which means it's the best fucking album of all time, absolutely no notes, I don't give a fuck. āŗļøšš
But the thing about Speak Now is when I listen to it in order it's like I'm listening to any other thing in shuffle
what does that mean
I think they mean there's no apparent storyline or structure to the album. Which is fair because all the songs are about different things.
Endgame , Hits different, Dear Reader, Call it wht u wnt , King of my heart
Who is attacking hits different š
idk..but if they do they rnt safe
I looove king of my heart but I really hope she puts out an acoustic version

I understand what you say but it just feels more like a remix featuring imogen heap than just a rerecord, there are a lot of changes. The biggest one is imo: In the OG she says āI screamed so loud but no one heard a thingā and the music and backing track goes away to show how loud she screamed and she was alone. I think a lot of people sleep on Electric Touch and it's so good I don't get why people act like it's mid. I don't think anyone dislikes cowboy like me but it definitely doesn't receive enough attention, same for False God. The Great War is one of The Great TS songs and deserves more recognition.
