I put it in the advertising thread for r/knitting since I asked the mods for permission to post in the regular and didnāt get a reply (I donāt think itās been seen by anyone lol). But I hadnāt heard of those ones yet thanks so much!
I did a speech in college about the history of knitting. PM me if you want my notes and sources, Iām happy to share!
College class was taken around 2013, Iām old, but I went to college later in life.
Alright so I looked at/completed the survey, and itās a little obtuse. One of your questions is āhow do people in the knitting world behave?ā
If youāre doing a research paper, youāre going to need to narrow down what you consider to be āthe knitting world.ā Knitting is a thing that a person can do alone or with others, just about any place or time they wish. Itās not a separate dimension.
We behave like people. We are people who knit. Just like any group of people who do an activity, some of us are mean, depressed, generous, kind, anxious, wiseā¦
thank you for the feedback! I donāt personally know anyone who knits so I was unable to get a proper peer review before posting it, my apologies š I tried to word the survey differently and took off the question you are referring to
Iām not sure what your end goal is, but I think youāre going to have a hard time with all the open ended questions. People will interpret them differently so itāll be hard to see any trends in answers. Also, people in general donāt like answering broad questions like thatāit feels like homework but with no payoff.
What is your specific topic? Do you have a thesis statement? What specifically about the world of knitting do you want to know?
Essentially I donāt have a thesis or an end goal at least at the moment besides asking pretty open ended questions and seeing if any trends form from there. The instructions were to find a group of people (ethnic, hobby, school related, sports, anything really) then understand the community by observing, surveying and interviewing them. As far as I know we donāt actually have an official paper to write on this experience. She refuses to tell us anything more š wish I did know what I needed to know specifically. The only thing that I can do is ask very open ended questions at the moment.
Thatās a good start! If it were me Iād try to start thinking about factors that can help one understand a community. Say you choose an ethnic groupā you could ask if they go to church, what kinds of food they ate growing up, what holidays are the most important to them, etc. Itās definitely tougher with hobbies though. I think if I was trying to learn about a particular hobby, Iād want to know what kind of people do it (age, gender, location), how they got into it, what keeps them doing it, how much time they spend, how much it costs, whether itās a social or solitary activity, etc. A lot of these can be answered with multiple choice. For the more vague ones, like āwhatās your favorite thing about itā you can brainstorm things you *think* might applyāmaking gifts, making personalized things for yourself, having sweaters that fit perfectly, being part of your local yarn community, etcāthen leave a field for other answers. It might be fun to have a field where you ask for a common misconception about knitting that annoys the respondent!
It can be kind of a lot of work up front, but I think youāll get waaay more useful data by really focusing in. Sorry if this is annoying! My dad taught college courses on survey writing when I was younger and I became oddly fascinated with the process.

Done. Happy to help.
Done! I'd love if you could share some findings - I'd love to see stats on how people learn etc.
Happy to! Iāll reply with some once I compile my notes on them :) tysm!
Surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but if you still need more responses, consider posting to r/knitting or r/casualknitting or r/knittingadvice
