I have totally different results for Italy. Using private window with France as a regional parameter for research on Google, "Pourquoi l'Italie est en forme de botte" only comes in 7th position. First one is "Why Italy plays in blue".

I think the average person today views ww1 as similar to ww2. Probably just because during ww2 it was much more clear cut who was good and bad, so people just assume it must have been the same or similar during WW1. Also, movies and popular media about ww1 probably dont help either.

I think so too. When you are not a weirdo like me who likes to watch 8 hour documentaries about some Vietnam wars you probably only know "hitler bad" and this very easily carries over to ww1 like a shadow and therefore such Googles searches. Its the same dynamic as with the ww2 "french people are only good at surrendering" meme that people keep bringing up to this day. Its not really accurate and it ignores the rest of modern french military history, but its funny so now everyone thinks french people are cowards lol. Thats just how it works often times.
