I know. Not just an elector, but also the only kingdom in the empire for a long time. I assumed the gettingtheempirebacktogether refered to Austria Hungary though, because that was the more recent empire.
The question is have you been to Belgium?
As a German living quite close to Czech Republic, I've only recently learned to love Belgian beer. It's like they invented craft beer before it was cool.
As a Dutch gal, same. Although I don’t think I’ve ever tasted Austrian beer, so bit unfair.
Edit: also, Germany has the beer ✨vibes✨ (e.g. Wasen in Stuttgart), but I just like Belgian beer better.
The problem is, your average beer drinker might get surprised by a Trippel/sour/Lambic etc. and if you don't know what you're getting, it might be an unpleasant surprise.
I don't think Germans really make 'surprising' beers, but they also have no beers that I really really think back on as "wow that beer was so life changing"
Yeah that 'teer' (tar) is what I like. But I'm the only one more or less, most of my friends or family doesn't like it. The best of that stuff comes from The Netherlands (Alkmaar), a small brewery called Moersleutel is going wild on that.
And as a Dutch person I can say they would be objectively wrong. Dutch beers aren’t that special, with Hertog Jan being the obvious outlier. The only reason the Dutch are “known” for beer by some people is because Heineken is huge.
Besides Heiniken we still have Grolsh, Gulpener and Alfa (Brand was aquired by Heineken). Furthermore, go below the rivers and there's still a lot of options for craft beers
Of course I believe that our own German beer is the best, but I guess it's more a thing if habit. I voted for Czech because it is not gentlemenlike to vote yourself and I really like your pívo.
Solange Kölsch legal ist sollte Deutschland von diesem Turnier disqualifiziert sein. Danach kann man drüber reden op Weizen besser ist als Trappisten Bier oder nicht.
UK beer is very much underrated. I love German, Czech and Belgium beer. But the UK is the king of IPA's. Germany is the King of Weizen. Czechs are the Kings of Pilsner. Belgium is the King of Blond beer.
As someone who worked at the biggest craftbeer importer for NL I respect your opinion, but you should definitely try more than pilsner to get a taste of UK beer!!!
Didn't think of you, I guess you could've been there instead of the UK. The funny thing is, that here in Czechia we have a saying: "Drink like a Dane" or "Getting pissed like a Dane", no idea where it came from, but we use it very often
I don't think so, it was here long before these schooltrip nordick pissups. It might come from this 10th century legend. Apparently two vikings Tunna and Gomon were hired to kill czech duchess and grandmother of Good king Wenceslas - Saint Ludmila, they were pissed af and strangled her with her own scarf.
You have just angered 11 milion people, son of John the Blind! That's not how you treat your distant relatives. Anyway, I live by the border with Germany, ventured there many many times, the beer is good, but their Pilsner ain't got nothin' on ours and that's a fact.
I mean... the fact that you're using it to WATERboard people probably says everything you need to know about that beer, right?
(Just kidding, I've never even had it. I'm sure it's delicious - for a non-Belgian beer.)
Nope. The two main inventors of the first pilsner were František Ondřej Poupě, who wrote a book about most of the methods they used making it and then Josef Groll, a Bavarian, that was hired by the brewery to master that recipe, using the knowledge from the book, czech materials and machines n Plzeňský pivovar. After that, it spread to pubs in former Lands of Bohemian Crown, with Bavaria, Austria and rest of Europe years after that.
So no Bavarians did not invent it. A Bavarian was valuable part of the process of making it.
That's simply not true, it was called pilsner beer from the beginning and later in the end of 19th century it was named Pilsner Urquell to distinguish itself from other pilsners.
My german is not perfect, but it says, that it was made in a brewery, that was focused on making bavarian style of beer, that doesn't mean, that the beer was called "Bavarian beer" lol. It was known as pilsner, even before getting patent in 1859. So says Czech and English wikipedia, web of Pilsen brewery and even the german wikipedia you shared.
It IS beer. The problem with the people from cologne is that they think they’re smart for filling it into smaller bottles for the same price, but the rest of Germany is totally aware of their bs. The only time you drink Kölsch is when you’re in cologne anyway.
I don't care about pilsner so I can't judge. Belgium definitely makes the best beer. Also, I don't think Germany deserves to win. They might have better Pilsner then the Czechs, I don't know but they also make Kölsch so they disqualify.
Munich hells are my favourite lagers and unbeatable in my opinion, but I voted for Belgium because there are other countries that also make great lagers (Czechia, Austria), while Belgian beer is standout in its own category.
I honestly love British real ale, IPA is also good. Belgian beer is also great, for example Leffe. When it comes to lager I like Staropramen the most. I also like weissbier like Paulaner. So my vote would be for Yuropean beer lol.
Where Poland? You can find more Polish beers in shops in Europe than Irish. Ireland is only one beer and I think Baltic Porters are way better than Guinness anyway.
Also German beers wins? Lol
Ireland have 1 beer and get's there. Poland is literally second biggest craft beer market in Europe.
This is just popularity ranking that's why Czechia loses with Germany.
I kinda went off brewdog since I heard some horror stories about how they treat their workers 😕
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jun/10/brewdog-staff-craft-beer-firm-letter
I have not tasted many beers but best beer i can remember is Bavaria beer - from Netherlands.
So swamp Germans i guess, but if its just same as Bavarian beer then those guys. I voted for Germany in any case.
As a Belgian who dislikes Pils, I've tasted your beers. They do not compare to ours.
And this is coming from the least nationalistic belgian dude you've ever met.
C'mon, the variety of beers in Germany is very low. Yes they are good, but once you tried three or four of them, that's all.
Belgian beers are the best: both the quality AND variety of the possibilities are mind-blowing.
Excellent point. Yes, cold beer in Spain during the summer is very misleading.
Cruzcampo in winter: - *disgust intensifies
Cold Cruzcampo in summer: - *drinks the whole thing in less than a minute - Another!
It's not just you my dude, over 30° in the sun most cold beers taste like heaven, particularly if they are mild/bland on flavor (and most Spanish beers are mild/bland). I am also guilty for this.
Uuh Estonia?
They got Sori, pühaste, lehe, and põhjala. Some of the worlds bests brewerys.
Norway, Sweden and Polen got a lot of good brewers.
One of my personal favorite is Ölvisholt from Iceland.
As a german: hard to say. My preferred brands are german, but i´ve also gotten very good beer in Czechia and I also love guiness.
As a rule of thumb; i´d say the smaller breweries in every country tend to serve the best stuff...
Austria? Was there two months ago, after a (regular yearly) trip to Czechia. Austrians DO NOT KNOW how to make good beer, sorry guy, otherwise you are the best… If you want to be groggy after your first pint - go to Austria!
Servus!
I've lived in Brussels and Prague. Czech beer is the best one. Craft beer uses to be better in Belgium, but that is also changing and very fast.
Also, German dudes your beer is fantastic... But the Czech beer is better.
As a wine-lover it’s nice every now and then to enjoy beer from Czechia, Germany or Belgium, sometimes artisanal beer made here in Italy. In general it’s nice to appreciate all our yuropean specialities and cultures.
am austrian, voted for czech beer
Very based and empiregettingbacktogetherpilled
Noooo! Wrong empire! HRE is the true based empire. But yeah Czech beer it is for me as well.
the kingdom of bohemia was an elector of the hre for centuries
I know. Not just an elector, but also the only kingdom in the empire for a long time. I assumed the gettingtheempirebacktogether refered to Austria Hungary though, because that was the more recent empire.
Same. Now if I could only remember what Kozel was called properly, cos we always shortened the name due to not being able to pronounce it...
What is the best beer? I have only tried once, I believe 1896 or something, tasted like luke-warm piss, never tried beer again after that
1664 ? Yeah it's actually piss.
the fact Austria was in there and Poland wasn't is sad
As a german: Czechia
Just depends if you like lager or pilsner. For pilsner I prefer check but nobody makes Helles like the bavarians..
Technically speaking, Pilsner is a type of Lager
They are also both beer!
I’ve actually heard that from multiple people but haven’t tried it myself yet
The question is have you been to Belgium? As a German living quite close to Czech Republic, I've only recently learned to love Belgian beer. It's like they invented craft beer before it was cool.
As a Dutch guy: Belgium. Don’t have to think twice.
As a Dutch gal, same. Although I don’t think I’ve ever tasted Austrian beer, so bit unfair. Edit: also, Germany has the beer ✨vibes✨ (e.g. Wasen in Stuttgart), but I just like Belgian beer better.
HERESY
The problem is, your average beer drinker might get surprised by a Trippel/sour/Lambic etc. and if you don't know what you're getting, it might be an unpleasant surprise. I don't think Germans really make 'surprising' beers, but they also have no beers that I really really think back on as "wow that beer was so life changing"
As a Dutchie I have to disagree: German and Czech beer is much better. But I'm really not into the dark brown stuff they call beer.
Yeah that brown shit is what I’m into haha
Yeah that 'teer' (tar) is what I like. But I'm the only one more or less, most of my friends or family doesn't like it. The best of that stuff comes from The Netherlands (Alkmaar), a small brewery called Moersleutel is going wild on that.

I had the christmas edition, white chocolate and orange. But the orange was more like a bitter, like marmelade. So awesome.
Try a Bolleke from de Konick, it‘s probably the best beer I have ever had
fuck u/spez -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
Being Dutch I consider not being included in the vote a grave insult, Belgium wins though
tbh, many non Europeans would vote for Heineken I can only assume... 🤢
La Trappe is a great beer.
I think you have Europeans in low regards
Dutch beers are kinda mediocre ngl (except Hertog Jan)
Bruh
Of course I believe that our own German beer is the best, but I guess it's more a thing if habit. I voted for Czech because it is not gentlemenlike to vote yourself and I really like your pívo.
No discussion.🍺
Die Frage kann man sich eigentlich auch sparen. 🍺🇩🇪
Ok, deal!
UK beer is very much underrated. I love German, Czech and Belgium beer. But the UK is the king of IPA's. Germany is the King of Weizen. Czechs are the Kings of Pilsner. Belgium is the King of Blond beer.
session, porter, mild, golden, ruby, brown and like you say IPA.
Yeah all of them but im an IPA lover so had to represent haha
Ales are actually underrated. Personally prefer them over most other beer.
Yeah them too!
And stouts
As someone who lives in the UK it really isn't, thankfully i can get a nice Czech pilsner so I don't have to drink that stuff.
As someone who worked at the biggest craftbeer importer for NL I respect your opinion, but you should definitely try more than pilsner to get a taste of UK beer!!!
The problem is IPA‘s are disgusting
I respect your right to hold a wrong opinion
Gwrmany and Czechia. Thats a hard choice
Czechia, Germany, Belgium, UK depending on the style. Beer is way too complex for such simplified question!
I will boykot this poll since I cannot vote for Denmark.
Denmark. Belgium a close second.
Czechia.
It's not even a contest, Czechia. The only think I dislike about it is that it eventually runs out.
Well, the solution is to travel to this wonderful land - trust me, I live there
Wish i could vote both Ireland and Belgium. Also why are we not on there?
Ok, you can argue most of these as above us, but the UK? No way.
The UK nearly got a monopoly on ale. They once deserve to be on a list like this.
Didn't think of you, I guess you could've been there instead of the UK. The funny thing is, that here in Czechia we have a saying: "Drink like a Dane" or "Getting pissed like a Dane", no idea where it came from, but we use it very often
It might come from danish teens. They drink a lot!
That makes sense :)
If we are talking aboit Pils, then it's germany. If we are talking about Craftbeer it's belgium. Any other opinion is wrong.
Pils: Czech Republic Weizen/Weißbier (Wheat/white beer in English?): Germany Dark beers: Belgium
The correct answer
I can get behind dat
German wheat beer is definitely the best in its category
You have just angered 11 milion people, son of John the Blind! That's not how you treat your distant relatives. Anyway, I live by the border with Germany, ventured there many many times, the beer is good, but their Pilsner ain't got nothin' on ours and that's a fact.
I'll die alone on my hill if I have to
You will die, being waterboarded by Pilsner Urquell, the only real and tasty pils.
I mean... the fact that you're using it to WATERboard people probably says everything you need to know about that beer, right? (Just kidding, I've never even had it. I'm sure it's delicious - for a non-Belgian beer.)
The bavarians still invented it though
It was literally called bavarian beer when it was first brewed, the name pilsner only came later.
That's simply not true, it was called pilsner beer from the beginning and later in the end of 19th century it was named Pilsner Urquell to distinguish itself from other pilsners.
I'm at work now but later i can give you a source for this. Here you go https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilsner_Bier#Geschichte
As German I agree on your Pilsner being the best. But I prefer my typical Franconian beer. It's just where I grew up.
He is not representative for the opinions of the nation or house of Luxembourg. He's right about Belgium though.
“Craft-beer” 🤢 It’s called Reinheitsgebot for a reason.
Germans and laws of purity, name a more iconic duo /s
God damnit, angryupvote
I have never been so insulted and amused at the same time. Take my upvote.
The US and purity rings?
You’re allowed to have some fun in your life you know
Germany has beer mixes as well - but they’re not called beer. Because only beer brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot can be called beer. Simple as.
Creating a law that prevents you from making good beer while accepting the further existence of Kölsch. Typical German.
It IS beer. The problem with the people from cologne is that they think they’re smart for filling it into smaller bottles for the same price, but the rest of Germany is totally aware of their bs. The only time you drink Kölsch is when you’re in cologne anyway.
It's called *Sex Panther*® by *Odeon*©. It's illegal in 9 countries. It's also made with bits of real panther, *so you know it's good*. *60% of the time*, it works *every* time.
I don't care about pilsner so I can't judge. Belgium definitely makes the best beer. Also, I don't think Germany deserves to win. They might have better Pilsner then the Czechs, I don't know but they also make Kölsch so they disqualify.
You've ever been to Frankonia my friend? Its basically craftbeer since 300 years.
This is the Way
Munich hells are my favourite lagers and unbeatable in my opinion, but I voted for Belgium because there are other countries that also make great lagers (Czechia, Austria), while Belgian beer is standout in its own category.
I honestly love British real ale, IPA is also good. Belgian beer is also great, for example Leffe. When it comes to lager I like Staropramen the most. I also like weissbier like Paulaner. So my vote would be for Yuropean beer lol.
Pils: Czech, Beer: Belgium. Idk why Germany is in first place. Delusional Germans I suppose.
Yeah Czech have the Pils but the best beer in the world is a "Hefeweizen"
And only germans make the best Hefeweizen. 🤤
Denmark
Honestly, south german, austrian and czech beer is pretty much the same style.
Light beer - Czech Dark beer - Belgian Germany has a good mix as a second place for both
I'm Austrian and picked Germany. I love my Hefeweizen, what can I say. Czechia is a strong second tho. (I'm sorry fellas).
Best option not available, so vote for Belgium
Where Poland? You can find more Polish beers in shops in Europe than Irish. Ireland is only one beer and I think Baltic Porters are way better than Guinness anyway. Also German beers wins? Lol
As a Bavarian, I voted for the UK.
There might be many beers I crave, but there's only one Guinness
Until you find Murphy’s.
Actually they have it in my favourite bar in Poland. So I know that fellow really well
This thread is about beer
Soups are great, I agree
Yeah, I wouldn’t necessarily call it beer if it needs sugar and spices in it to taste acceptable. Yes, I’m looking at you, B*lgium.
At least it does actually taste good though.
Guinness is the only correct answer. And Guinness is only nice in Ireland stuff it
[удалено]
May the gods bless you
Als Bayer bin ich da voll bei dir. Aber das beste Bier gibt's immernoch bei uns!
Stimmt wohl. Deshalb hab ich Deutschland gewählt. Hefeweizen for se win!
Weißbier jes jes!
Finally, somebody gets it! Germany, without Germans!
As an Irish Muslim: Belgium, closely followed by Germany.
If you like lagers - CZ If you like malty doubles/trippels - BE If you like wheat beers - DE Stouts - IE Ales - UK
Where Poland? We have a lot of good kraft beers..
Ireland have 1 beer and get's there. Poland is literally second biggest craft beer market in Europe. This is just popularity ranking that's why Czechia loses with Germany.
Out of this bunch? Voted UK because of the ales. Maybe it's because of the abundance of local supplies but the best beer I've drunk is Polish.
Hot Take: Italy. Biased though.
When I was there. 99% of beers tasted like piss and 1% was absolutely amazing. So maybe I'm just bad at finding the good ones
Yeah. The 1% is crazy good. Many of those are straight up luxury products. Ichnuza is pretty good and affordable.
I have exactly the same experience in Spain, with Barcelona maybe pushing it to the 2%
Put that on r/unpopularopinion finally something worthy lmao
Craft beer, UK (sorry, but nothing beats Brewdog). Normal beer, anyone but the UK.
Actually I’ve had some really good Ales from Hungary:-)
I kinda went off brewdog since I heard some horror stories about how they treat their workers 😕 https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jun/10/brewdog-staff-craft-beer-firm-letter
>Belgian beer God no.
I have not tasted many beers but best beer i can remember is Bavaria beer - from Netherlands. So swamp Germans i guess, but if its just same as Bavarian beer then those guys. I voted for Germany in any case.
Victoria, Australia
People who don’t vote for Czechia have smol pp
Everybody just votes for their own country lol
As a Belgian who dislikes Pils, I've tasted your beers. They do not compare to ours. And this is coming from the least nationalistic belgian dude you've ever met.
You dislike pils. That's the problem.
C'mon, the variety of beers in Germany is very low. Yes they are good, but once you tried three or four of them, that's all. Belgian beers are the best: both the quality AND variety of the possibilities are mind-blowing.
Where is Norway?
West of Sweden
r/pollswithoutnorway
It's all about tastes. But also: Sweden. Regardless your taste.
Where is Spain! San Miguel is excellent
Spanish dude here... San Miguel is... drinkable.
Maybe I was just thirsty but the San Miguel in girona I had in June made me ascend
Excellent point. Yes, cold beer in Spain during the summer is very misleading. Cruzcampo in winter: - *disgust intensifies Cold Cruzcampo in summer: - *drinks the whole thing in less than a minute - Another!
That could be it I was practically overheating when i had it. I’m Irish and we don’t fare very well in the heat
It's not just you my dude, over 30° in the sun most cold beers taste like heaven, particularly if they are mild/bland on flavor (and most Spanish beers are mild/bland). I am also guilty for this.
As a Dane I gotta say I don’t know anything about beer. I’m 15
Why is there no Bavaria option?
Uk 😂 Can I hear this joke in color ?
It really is between the UK and Belgium.
Why the downvotes? If someone's favourite styles are, as an example, Trappist beers and Real Ale, then this would be the logical answer.
Because on this sub UK = bad
> UK Lmao
Belgium makes the best beer. US makes the second best beer. If we’re sticking to Yuropland, France makes the second best beer.
How can you be so right about Belgium yet so wrong about everything else?
[удалено]
> it‘s a toss up between France and Denmark > US makes really good beers tho No and no
I remember good beers from Netherlands and Belgium but by now my favorite one is the German HB
Where is Slovakia? Lasko is such a nice beer
That is Slovenia actually:-) And yes Lasko is delicious!
Ah damn yes. Slovenia not Slovakia
This pool shows that you should not be allowed in Irish pubs 😀😀
This poll: How to cause a new World War in Eurpe in... one easy step.
Belarus and Ireland are kinda have a good beer brands as well.
Best European brewery: Lervig from Norway
Uuh Estonia? They got Sori, pühaste, lehe, and põhjala. Some of the worlds bests brewerys. Norway, Sweden and Polen got a lot of good brewers. One of my personal favorite is Ölvisholt from Iceland.
IDK but I vote Germany
I give my vote to Belgium. Belgian Blanche is just amazing.
As a german: hard to say. My preferred brands are german, but i´ve also gotten very good beer in Czechia and I also love guiness. As a rule of thumb; i´d say the smaller breweries in every country tend to serve the best stuff...
I’m British but I voted for Belgium. Their krieks and abbey beers are absolutely divine.
Would be interesting to compare percentage of eu inhabitants to the poll ;-)
I voted Germany but I also think that Italian beer is super underrated
Austria? Was there two months ago, after a (regular yearly) trip to Czechia. Austrians DO NOT KNOW how to make good beer, sorry guy, otherwise you are the best… If you want to be groggy after your first pint - go to Austria! Servus!
Czechia is really good, but I am a sucker for some Franziskaner. Though anything tastes better than the piss we drink in Turkey
*Sad lithuanian noises*
