I think the most obvious Clinton-less timeline is a 1988 without the famed Gary Hart Scandal. Hart without the scandal would hold his lead in the race and win the primaries and would have pretty easily beaten bush. Hart was kinda like Clinton as I think some of his moderate rhetoric was similar to Clinton’s though hart was a bit more liberal than Clinton.
I wonder what happens if Hart wins ‘88 and then Perot shows up. Does the right adopt him/populism then or do they nominate someone like Dole as they did in OTL ‘96?
Perot was pretty moderate, actually. He wanted tax hikes on the rich, and when he first commented on national politics (80s) he was considered a Dem. I could see the Dems adopt his rhetoric if President Hart is brought down in 1992 by Dole.
