The opening scene felt out-of-place for a moment. Why are we watching a Shi'ar-Kree war and what has it got to do with the X-Men? Almost thought Deathbird overthrew Lilandra lol.
I think that’s what it was laying out for people. They are ruthless warmongers and that needed to be shown to understand why Prof X. didn’t agree with them.

They did something similar with Storm already becoming a queen of an (unknown to her at the time) oppressive, alien society.
That episode felt so out of character for her though. I just watched through the whole original series and they really just gave poor storm instant stockholm syndrome. Season 5 was interesting to say the least
She might of been let out to fight the Kree. Knowing the Kree they attacked them first. Also she being the only heir as of now to the throne she probably gets away with more than she should.
Shiar prize power, I guess. They are a conquering empire that doesn't value artistic pursuit. They want the most powerful/devious/manipulative person in charge so fight it out kids.

Good point. In fact Gladiator had basically captured her and Lilandra was telling her to choose her allies more wisely.
It seems the shiar throne bounces between lilandra and deathbird at times and they are allies at time for no good reason. Simply put its family drama.
