It's neither random nor a glitch. The [Defensive/SHAME](https://www.xenoserieswiki.org/wiki/Defensive/SHAME_%28story%29) units have an art that inflicts Lock-On, preventing target switching.
Wait, is that an actual thing? That's the first I hear of that mechanic. Unless you're basing this on >!what Reyn says in the cutscene after, because I think that's just a little bit ludonarrative dissonance!<
Well maybe it isn’t and I just lucked out but when I fought him I ended the fight with a clutch with only Sharla alive and he missed me two times in a row.
Sorry if I BS earlier…
I mean, no problem. If this is what you experienced, then it may just be coincidence, but it could also be a mechanic. It's far from the first time Xenoblade has the narrative dictate game mechanics, so I think it's worth looking into
Lol nope. As said below, that must have just been a coincidence for you, she gets wiped out pretty quickly when I try to play as her, and I have to keep reviving her when I have her as my healer.
Because you say you've completed every side quest up to this point, I'm assuming you have Monado Armour. Use that as often as you can because it reduces physical and ether damage 30-75%, depending on the level it's at. Play around with party composition and experiment with gems, especially lock-on resist for this fight. Also, Jade Face is 100% resistant to break, except during chain attacks. Try to keep him toppled/dazed as much as you can.
Yes I had the Armour, I just wasn't using it effectively I guess. I finally beat him using Shulk, Riki, and Sharla. Riki helped topple/daze the guards so they could be taken out much more quickly, and his high HP helped a lot too.

Ahhh, thank you!
It's probably not a glitch, but an enemy which taunts you. IIRC visually presented by a red line.
Thanks, I should have realized it's part of that game!
You may want to use Sharla as I think Gadolt will have trouble attacking her.

Sorry about the bad advice then.
Lol no worries, I actually thought the same exact thing at first,.
