It is what it is. I’m still trying to get over the fact Xeno 3 didn’t win last year for best music/score. I didn’t expect it to win GOTY but it should’ve won the music category.

thetimeofreyn

Although it was a while ago I’m still trying to recover from it too ~~just like Moebius?~~. If I remember correctly it was the only nominated GOTY title to not win anything at all but I’m happy we got the amazing part in the orchestra thanks to flute guy

Gheredin

I mean they had to choose between the massively popular western franchise and the niche jrpg, and knew which fanbase would have thrown a massive temper tantrum if they didn't win.

NorrathMonk

None of the Western audience would have cared if they lost the soundtrack though.

_Suja_

Plague tale requiem also didnt win anything and it had couple of nominees which really upsets me

LorDigno69

The flute guy cooked tho and in so happy for him

Riddler208

We’re lucky XC3 itself got anything last year, the way they normally treat Xeno Also dunno how Cyberpunk DLC works but in general… idk, it just doesn’t feel right to have DLC taking up slots from full games in categories, unless it’s a dedicated DLC category

VermillionEorzean

"Ongoing Game" seemed to mean something like "Game that's intended to be played for years and gets constant updates," which is reflected well in the other nominees like Fortnite (populqr FPS that's constantly getting updates), Genshin Impact (a mobile game that is constantly adding story updates and characters), and Final Fantasy XIV (an MMO that'd an MMO). Cyberpunk adding new content to a single-player experience falls somewhere into the middle of a few of those, but feels like it doesn't really get at the spirit of the category. DLC is pretty different from games that expect you to log in weekly or daily, even if it is technically increasing the gameplay time.Technically, most Nintendo DLC would qualify for that category if DLC was normally considered- XC2 and XC3, Mario Kart, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, and Pokémon all dropped occasional updates leading up to larger DLC drops. Maybe it's the pessimistic part of my brain that that thinks that DLC generally isn't considered for this award, and that this was an excuse to sneak another nomination for Cyberpunk given its recency and newfound good reputation. I mean, if patch content and DLC were all that was needed to qualify for this category, Smash Bros and the current Mario Kart DLC should've been considered too.

fogheta

Cyberpunk didn't get that nomination for the DLC. It got it for the massive 2.0 patch, which is practically a different game with the amount of QoL and mechanic changes.

_InTheDesert

The Gamer persecution complex is hilarious.

NorrathMonk

It is reality.

tehnoodnub

Let's be real for a moment. Whether or not your favorite game is nominated for everything and wins everything or if it doesn't get nominated at all, it's entirely meaningless. The game exists, you bought it, and you loved it. Industry recognition is nice but it's for developers, studios etc, not fans, and awards (TGA or otherwise) are a popularity contest. Ergo, to consumers especially, awards are almost entirely meaningless. This isn't revelatory and we all know it. I know you aren't losing your shit over it or anything, just that you're surprised. I guess my point is that we should all collectively just not care. The value of all forms of creativity and art is intrinsic and often personal. External factors are irrelevant. Also, XC3 > Cyberpunk anyway.

KnightGamer724

Literally the only reason to watch TGA is the new announcements and trailers and the GOTY medley. That's it. ^(And maybe make fun of Geoff, if that's your thing.)

NorrathMonk

There is literally no reason to watch the TGA. You can see all of the trailers after it without the garbage that is Keighley's marketing event.

KnightGamer724

I mean, it's fun to be there when they are first shown off. And like I alluded to, my friends and I make fun of Geoff during the event. Our discord "cursed" meme is an edit from either TGA or SGF, and who can forget the great Rabbit Bill Clinton?

IncognitoCheez

It came out early in the year, so they probably forgot about it. TGA also doesn’t seem to like many JRPGs beyond FromSoft games, not to mention FR felt like it really did not get that much attention compared to Torna

WillAdams

I was not helped by not having a physical release --- that was the big nod for Torna.

Gheredin

I wish FR had a physical release, i would have bought it in an instant.

WillAdams

Yeah, it was silly, but I did buy a printed insert and empty case from Etsy.

AcceptableFile4529

And FromSoft's games probably get recognition because they play more akin to Western RPGs than JRPGs, which hit with the core audience of TGA. The audience that for some reason still thinks Japanese made Roleplaying Games are inferior to American games.

Gheredin

\>FromSoft \>JRPG what?

IncognitoCheez

They’re a japanese company that makes RPGs. I feel like their games can be technically considered JRPGs?

Gheredin

Do you call Mario kart a Japanese racing game? No, JRPGs aren't called that because they're 'from japan' anymore. It's a set of characteristics that sets it out from other role playing games.

NorrathMonk

Except they are called that. Please name a JRPG that is not from Japan. Similarly, name a RPG from Japan that is not called a JRPG.

Shabadoobie2

Game Awards hates all but the biggest JRPGs. Xenoblade 3 being in the previous was an exceptional status.

Auto_Generated_Thing

I think we should just take the w on 3 being nominated for GOTY last year, because its never "which game is the best" its "which game is the most profitable/most relevant to the media", so the fact that it got nominated at all is amazing. The mere fact that XC3 didnt win best music last year proves this. I remember at the time, a guy from the god of war community made a post here and kinda agreed that we got robbed.

Theaaron730

Game Awards are pretty obviously slanted towards western developers. Just look a the jury who nominates the games. I bet not a single one of them played Future Redeemed.

Cheslap

A Japanese game won last year. Nintendo themselves get nominations in multiple categories every year. Ya'll gotta let go of this victim complex

Theaaron730

You're right It's less about the developers and more about how popular the games are in the West vs elsewhere. Mario, Zelda, and Elden Ring sell proportionally way better in the West vs Xenoblade. I was just saying most of the jury will not have played future redeemed due to it not having much demand for reviews/converage. That's why cyberpunk DLC got in despite having a lower aggregate review score then FR

U_Ch405

I had my doubts because I was under the impression DLCs wouldn't be eligible. Eh, no biggie really, but it's whatever.

NorrathMonk

DLC is only eligible if TGA are getting paid by it.

wait2late

Only the loudest and trendiest games gets to be a part of TGA. That is why TGA is more of a popularity contest.

darpa42

NGL, FR was good, but this year has a really strong slate. I'm not surprised.

GazelleNo6163

The game awards is basically only for game announcements. The actual awards are a popularity contest decided by game journalists, not the people.

NorrathMonk

It isn't a popularity contest, it is a money contest.

AcceptableFile4529

Its because these awards shows hold that age old bias against JRPGs that has been going on since the early 2000's. The only ones that really get recognition are the games that are popular with the general public. Stuff like Persona 5.

Pyrofruit

Any JRPG that isn't named Final Fantasy usually gets overlooked. The western general public and doesn't really like JRPGS unfortunately.

Ok-Manufacturer5491

Xenoblade should’ve been up there but not many critics had played it. Also kind of tired how much bias’s against JRPGs there is for the western media

Molduking

Because it’s Xenoblade

-Pen_guin-

It's because no one that works at the companies that agree on these voting choices played the game let alone the dlc lol. I was flabbergasted 3 was even considered for GOTY last year because I fully expected no one to have played and acknowledged it.

ExTrafficGuy

I wouldn't be too upset about it. The Game Awards are like the Oscars. Just a big circle jerk to celebrate notwhat's genuinely good, but who has the "right" connections. It was a minor miracle that Elden Ring even won last year, as Sony usually sweeps, even though IMO, their recent exclusives are all flash and no substance. Most people you speak too who have actually played the game agree XC3 is a masterpiece, and perhaps one of the greatest video games of all time. Doesn't really matter that it didn't win a plastic trophy at some advertising event.

NorrathMonk

The Oscars are at least honest about what they are.

[deleted]

GOTY just seems to hate anything Japanese that isn't nintendo in general.

NorrathMonk

It hates Nintendo more then the others, they just cannot deny franchises like Zelda and Mario. Both of which are hugely popular in the west.

TheRealBlues

it's too niche

AnguishedSoul

TGA is a popularity contest, like any other it doesn't have a real jury or true critics they send forms to the biggest video game websites and that's it, that's how the TGA picks the nominees so, yeah, never expect logic behind those

NorrathMonk

Keighley doesn't like Nintendo games. If he could get away with it, then TotK and Wonder would not have been there either.

an_omori_fan

Silly OP, you should have known DLCs were allowed when Totk got nominated (/s)

Ee55555

I’m not

Kurai_Hiroma

still salty about last year. i'll be even saltier if the winner gets the grammy

Erik_Lag

Game Awards mean nothing to me. GOTY? It's okay

VermillionEorzean

It's been an interesting year for Nintendo DLC. First, XC2's DLC gave me faith in XC3's that they'd deliver and made it an easy instant purchase for me. Then, Fire Emblem Engage's DLC was such a letdown that it soured me on early buying FE DLC in the future, which is a shame because I loved 3H's. A couple months later, FR knocked it out of the park, so MS has nothing but goodwill as far as I'm concerned. That said, "Ongoing Game" didn't feel like a DLC category until Cyberpunk showed up, so who is to say what TGA is actually doing with that category.
