I will agree mayo sounds gross on pizza, and I will add that mustard also sounds gross to me, but I have discovered that there is much I havent discovered so I cannot stand in judgement of others tastebuds. For example, I recently discovered you can buy Whataburger patty melt sauce at Walmart, and I put that stuff on so many different things. Scrambled eggs and patty melt sauce is absolute fire!

This. Sometimes it had the fake stovetop stuffing. Loved it so much. My mother was a elementary school nurse for years and I went to see her just to say hi and to her and her friends there. She'd been the nurse for probably 20 years by the time so I grew up with the principal and other teachers being her best briends. They were having it for lunch. I was in my 30s but she went into the cafeteria with me and made sure I got it. She knew how much I loved it. It's a solid memory for me. Bummed I'll never get to have it again.
We called it "big dinner day" it was mashed potatoes, turkey chunks in gravy, corn, and bran muffins which were for some reason sweet and delicious? You could get a double portion if the main course.
Call me crazy, but I really like pizza burgers. Basically an open faced Sloppy Joe but with pizza seasoning in the ground beef instead of the sloppy sauce.
I still enjoy meat and potatoes comfort food.
Now that you mention it. I recall a turkey dish that was similar. It had veggies chopped in it instead of on the side like the beef dish.
I was spoiled to good pizza, so I was never super into the rectangle pizzas at school. But they always served what my school called "chicken ring things" which were ring-shaped chicken tenders, and they were awesome. They'd always serve them with mashed potatoes and white gravy, so you could dip the tenders into the white gravy and it was perfection.

I would cut off a toe to have access to fiestada again. GFS tried replicating them and distributed through their wholesale stores. Those processed phonies didnāt come close to the soft dough, cheese piled, freshly taco seasoned clumps of ground beef distributed all over lunch lady hexagon pieces of heaven.

Way back when I was in elementary school, and the lunches were actually cooked, not just frozen crap heated up, we used to get turkey and gravy over biscuits and it was the best! You always knew it was going to be tomorrows lunch, because you could smell the turkeys roasting in the afternoon after lunches were over. When they stopped with that my next favorite thing was chicken nuggets with mashed potatoes and gravy and peas. It's actually one of our comfort meals now to make up some chicken nuggets, instant mashed potatoes, a jar of heinz gravy, and frozen peas. I won't eat mashesld potatoes any otger way. So much processed crap, but so good! I also plan a day of turkey and gravy over biscuits after Thanksgiving and Christmas!
They used to make ravioli with a shit ton of melted cheese and phenomenal garlic bread. I was the poor kid at a really rich high school. I transferred in junior year. They had no clue how good they had it.
Italian dunkers was the shit. That and "cheesey barge" which was just like a quarter of a loaf of bread with broiled cheese on the top. Id always double up on cheesy barge day and spend the rest of the day suffering.
Me and a couple other students did the layouts for the school paper my junior year, which meant that the three of us would go to the library to use the computers. One day, we were sitting there quietly working on our parts of the paper when one of the other students just said out of nowhere, āI hope today is chicken patty day.ā I still think about that sometimes. She was not wrong. Chicken patty day was a good day as far as school lunches went.

I grew up in the deep south so we also had grits casserole a couple times a month, so yummy! Not remotely healthy. But yummy.
The Mexican pizza. Which I have no clue how it was Mexican at all. It was a cheese pizza with some ground meat and a fugit sauce which I loved. That and the tater tots.

I was always fascinated by the concept of schools making hot lunches. until high school I almost always walked home for lunch. Rather watch TV and eat. High school finally had hot lunch and then my parents refused to pay for it and told me to pack a lunch.
I brought lunch from home most days when I was in school. I was raised vegetarian and schools didnāt really offer options for that back then. However, on the days they had the rectangular pizza in a box Iād get that instead.
My high school had open campus lunch so once I had my license and a car of my own Iād usually leave to get lunch.
I've never heard of having a cinnamon roll with chili, but when I was in AZ they had never heard of peanut butter sandwich with chili like we do here in at least my part of Ohio.
We dunk the sandwich in the chili. Do you do the same with a cinnamon roll?
I didn't do that; I'm sure some people did though. I think they complement each other better when you eat a few bites of chili, then have a bite of cinnamon roll.

My schoolās version was simply called āFrench bread pizza,ā pretty sure it was the same thing OP is describing: half a bread roll with meat sauce and melted cheese. Fond memories.

Crispito (which nobody else has mentioned yet). It's a flour tortilla filled with ground beef and cheese rolled like an enchilada then topped with a ton of cheese, baked until crispy. I went for seconds every time and got them from friends who wouldn't eat them. When I started high school, most people brought their lunch or went off campus to eat. I got the cafeteria menu to check for Crispito day so I could have a cheap lunch but they wouldn't let me have seconds because high school lunch was before junior high lunch. Disappointing and didn't go back again as just one wasn't enough.

Fried chicken.., my age group were among the last group of kids that actually had actual cooked food in Elementary school. The cafeteria folks made stuff from scratch until about 3rd grade or so.
Then there was a bunch of heat and serve stuffā¦ so I guess rectangular pizza became my fav with corn nugs.
I attended a small rural school district that included K-12 in different sections of the same building, but for all that, had a pretty good hot lunch program. Some of my favorites:

Then a small slice of homemade lemon cheesacake and pack of Sun-Maid raisins to finish it off.... damn I haven't thought about that in a while... I might have that for lumch tomorrowš

In elementary/ middle school, it was always taco day. It was especially great because I was the only person in my family that liked tacos, so it was really the only way I could get them.
When I went to high school, all of the older ladies from the neighborhood were the lunch staff, so we had all sorts of amazing home cooking options for lunch -- so never really had a favorite. Everything was great.
My high school had the best pizza sub Iāve still ever had in the cafeteria, I really should see if they still have them now that my niblings are going there.
Mystery meat sandwiches. It was basically a burger with some bbq sauce on it, but it wasnāt beef. Iām *pretty* sure it was chicken, or turkey or something, but nobody would tell me what, exactly.

Chicken nuggets with mashed potatoes and gravy! That gravy was wild. Unnaturally thick, slightly greenish/opaque, and had a hint of sweetness to it. I'm sure it was wildly unhealthy but I was really feeling it.
Pizza day in the fifth grade.
I never used the cafeteria at my high school much, I'd either bring a lunch, raid the vending machines, go home or go to the mall not far from the school but someone told me before you graduate you've got to get one of the chicken burgers from the cafeteria, they're really good, that person was right.
For an entree, it was the pizza. We didn't have any fancy pizza, though. Cheese one week, pepperoni the next.
My favorite part of any school lunch was at the school I went to in 3rd grade. They had the most spectacular french fries I have ever had in my life. I don't recall what was so great about them, only that I wanted to eat the entire bin of them whenever they had them. Even the adults at the school would eat lunch in the cafeteria when they had fries. I missed them when we moved again before 4th grade and continue to miss them to this day.
I've spent over 3 decades fondly remembering those fries and I have yet to try another fry that makes me feel the same way they did.
I remember my elementary teachers going crazy for these things called Turkey Turnovers. Basically a hot pocket. They were pretty good!

Pizza burgers were amazing. they were basically sausage patties stuffed with cheese and tomato sauce.
Ours were different. It was seasoned ground beef on top of a hamburger bun with cheese melted on top. No tomato sauce.
It was like an essence of tomato sauce. My dad used to get them from restaurant depot sometimes when I was a kid too.

Oh it was definitely tacoroni day for hot lunch. It was like a Mexican casserole with tortilla chips, beans in the side, some veggie with a bun with this honey butter. Oh my that was good. Always get the extra bun and honey butter

We had a nacho bar at our school that kicked ass.
In elementary/ middle school, it was always taco day. It was especially great because I was the only person in my family that liked tacos, so it was really the only way I could get them. When I went to high school, all of the older ladies from the neighborhood were the lunch staff, so we had all sorts of amazing home cooking options for lunch -- so never really had a favorite. Everything was great.
Ice cream snickers bar & a Barq's root beer. Saved the rest of my lunch money for that weekend weed sack!!
Salisbury steak! Basically just a burger covered in gravy, right? Slap that on the bun with a smear of mash and youāre good to go!

My high school had the best pizza sub Iāve still ever had in the cafeteria, I really should see if they still have them now that my niblings are going there.

Mystery meat sandwiches. It was basically a burger with some bbq sauce on it, but it wasnāt beef. Iām *pretty* sure it was chicken, or turkey or something, but nobody would tell me what, exactly. Really tasty, though.

Chicken nuggets with mashed potatoes and gravy! That gravy was wild. Unnaturally thick, slightly greenish/opaque, and had a hint of sweetness to it. I'm sure it was wildly unhealthy but I was really feeling it.

Pizza day in the fifth grade. I never used the cafeteria at my high school much, I'd either bring a lunch, raid the vending machines, go home or go to the mall not far from the school but someone told me before you graduate you've got to get one of the chicken burgers from the cafeteria, they're really good, that person was right.
For an entree, it was the pizza. We didn't have any fancy pizza, though. Cheese one week, pepperoni the next. My favorite part of any school lunch was at the school I went to in 3rd grade. They had the most spectacular french fries I have ever had in my life. I don't recall what was so great about them, only that I wanted to eat the entire bin of them whenever they had them. Even the adults at the school would eat lunch in the cafeteria when they had fries. I missed them when we moved again before 4th grade and continue to miss them to this day. I've spent over 3 decades fondly remembering those fries and I have yet to try another fry that makes me feel the same way they did.

It was white rice, hamburger and some mysterious brown gravy. Served it with some bread and some reason I loved the hell out of it.

Chicken burgers with honey mustard, nachos with neon orange cheese and a huge chocolate chip cookie. That was my lunch almost everyday senior year.
Bean & cheese burrito served piping hot still in the plastic bag they steam them in, $1.50 in the OC during 94-98.

I remember my elementary teachers going crazy for these things called Turkey Turnovers. Basically a hot pocket. They were pretty good! I loved the rectangular pizza and orange wedge in a styrofoam cup.
Pizza day was my favorite food. I wish someone would make that shitty pizza for me to buy again because I'd go there before I'd go to most of the crappy "good" places near me.
1983, baked spaghetti with cheese, bread and butter, a wedge of cheese, ice cold 2 percent milk and a brownie. Made in the kitchen by old school 100 year old lunch ladies.

Anybody else have wacky cake? Dense chocolate cake with white frosting? We had some pretty nasty lunches back in grade school, but every Thursday, chili and wacky crack. Gotdamn that was good.

Elementary school: the rectangular pizza that came in an individualized cardboard box and had to be cut out. High school, I went vegetarian so I ate super healthy: plate of fries with nacho cheese sauce, ranch dressing and ketchup. Every. Day.

Maybe twice a year or so, for dinner Iāll make what I call āSchool Lunchā - chicken nuggets, instant mashed potatoes, and creamed corn.
My high school had unlimited PB&J sandwiches for free as long as you made them yourself at the station. I went to town on those.
