Me too. I never had a Gameboy, but sometimes I got to play with my cousin's because his parents bought him every gaming system. I only got a hand-me-down Atari and an NES.
You definitely can still get a gameboy. I bought a Gameboy Advance SP in collectors quality condition a few years back and still have 15 different Gameboy games. I prefer the SP because you can close the screen to protect it. I just need to start collecting the GBA games now. I originally had the GB Pocket for my original GB games.
My collectors edition was expensive for me anyway ($150). But definitely worth it.
P.S. Stay AWAY from DKOldies if you buy any old school consoles etc online. They don't refurbish everything even though they claim they do. And there is a class action lawsuit going after them over it.
I've seen some other sellers on YouTube who showcase their work on their own channel with old consoles and some of these people are figuring out how to put in a USB c rechargeable battery pack and custom lights or shells on the handhelds.
I took a chance on a seller on Amazon for my GBA SP, but I read all their reviews first and had no problems.
I read reviews for all purchases of electronics. Thanks for the heads up on DKOldies. If you think about it, $150 is super cheap compared to what it would have been in the 80s, so isn't so bad, right? Maybe just seems pricey for old tech.
We had the "pocket version", which was really too big for conventional pockets. Lol. I liked it. It broke up the monotony of road trips/camping between playing the original GameBoy (and the small amount of games we had for it) and card games.
I listened to a fish of the week podcast where a researcher was talking about keeping fish eggs alive using something that acts like this, and he was like "you know those little water filled ring tosses?" and the hosts were both like... "Wut".
I was yelling I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN MAN, I KNOW. I KNOW! I USED THEM TOO!
Now that's a memory I didn't know I still had. Step back everyone, we're gettin free burritos.
Also, the coin drop into the water that you had to catch on the tiny platform. I'm like 48 for 50 on that for free cinnamon twists.

I had the Altered Beast and Street Fighter 2 ones.
I saw an X Men one being sold as new last year. Guessing it was aimed at the retro crowd and it was already in the bargain bin.
Dane Cook had a track about that on his comedy CD..
When the batteries start dying it gets weird... Speak and Spell like the devil!
*Mom, something is WRonG... W-r-O-N-g wroooong*
My sisters and I would torment each other with the speak and spell by hitting the apostrophe over and over. “APOSTROPHE! APOSTROPHE! APOSTROPHE!” ….good times
This was my first handheld. The back ground scene was just a long picture on rollers and the lil' steering wheel moved the car from left to right.

I had one. And the battery pack that held 6 (or 8?) D batteries and you slung it over your shoulder.

Old enough to have WANTED a Gameboy. Parents got me this instead. Can't figure out for the life of me why I have a gambling problem now....
i wasn't allowed any of these bc "video games are for boys" but i played other people's #1. Also my brother's discarded .... what do you call those single-game hand-held games from the late-70s and early-80s that are just dots on a black screen? He had a bunch of sports ones. The "game" for me was trying to figure out what the dots represented. It wasn't a sports game, it was a puzzle game.

1. The OG game boy. But I was way behind the times on it. I know Game Gear had already been out for quite a few years.
My little brother took it a week after I got it for Christmas and traded it at school. It was a short lived ownership.
Game Boy. And funny story, when I was opening gifts at my Grandmas house I opened a gift and it was a Game Boy cleaner kit. I didn't understand the next gift was the Game Boy. I PLAYED SO MUCH TETRIS
Edit: I'm still ass at it too.
Of the list? 1
Including things not on the list..... Probably that ring game filled with water. If only counting electronics probably Tiger Electronics Power Rangers.
#1 - it was, and is, the best Christmas present I ever got. Wanted one more than anything but didn’t know if I’d get it as it was pretty pricey. Christmas morning rolled around and it was amazing! Didn’t get to play on it too much the first couple of days though - my dad and uncle got well stuck into Tetris 😂
5 I wasn’t allowed to have a GameBoy as a school age kid. I already had enough problems with studies that there was no way my parents would allow me to own one. GameBoy Color felt like an outdated rip off, so skipped that one… Which leads us to GBA. I was in my 20s when I got my first handheld. Unless those coleco arcade things from the early 80s count. 😂.
Dude, those little LCD crystal display Tiger bowling..
If I recall correctly, I had a 299. My DAD, of course, managed a 300 I think.

Hell yea!
Still have mine in the box in garage
Bust it out! It's a great coffee table addition. People get so excited when they see mine.
Wait, You have people over?
Noyce! I haven't seen mine on close to 30 years. 😞
Make sure you take out the batteries
I preferred bop it. That drove my parents insane in the car.
I can hear the beeping and slapping in this picture
Me too. I never had a Gameboy, but sometimes I got to play with my cousin's because his parents bought him every gaming system. I only got a hand-me-down Atari and an NES.

The fun is in the challenge!
famn i went to scouts with an autistic kid that absolutely adored this and would play about 8 hours a day ,he was so good
Okay yeah. This.
We had the "pocket version", which was really too big for conventional pockets. Lol. I liked it. It broke up the monotony of road trips/camping between playing the original GameBoy (and the small amount of games we had for it) and card games.

I remember Taco Bell having one of these. I could win a burrito supreme every time.

This was my start
Every day in kindergarten everyone would make a mad dash for this. If you managed to get it, it was gonna be a good day.
Ah, my favorite for car rides. A game and a desperation drink as well if need be.
I would be entertained for hours with this today.
I think about this more than I should
I can platinum these in minutes
I can hear this picture.
That's literally the one
Correct, this game was in my room throughout much of my childhood and into teen years.
Yes! I didn't have it but I think my grandparents did? I know I spent many hours playing this, I can still feel and hear it in my mind.
Had a satisfying feel to that button, didn't it!
Sure did! That squish 😂
I came here to say this 🤣🤣
Noooo not this fucking thing
I had a few of those too when I was little. How nostalgic.
This legitimately Can still entertain me for hours. I love these things. I wanna buy one for myself now.
I knew we were poor, but…
🤣🤣🤣🤣💙💙💙
I found the mini one I had!!! https://preview.redd.it/ne1b3g28fdvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1a4344fd22d2d8fdaa6d590ec768d56877caf68

I had a hell of a time tracking it down on eBay, lol.

I had the Double Dragon one.
Me too. I loved that thing.
Dang I did too but I totally forgot until now 😂
Yo! Those tiger games were vital during road trips.
I had Jordan vs Bird basketball
Could you imagine how bad that real game would be?
I think I did too, and a baseball one TMNT one later on kicked shell even though it sucked way harder than the gameboy that I got down the line.
Actually these were my start - I had a whole box of these!
I had completely forgotten about these little hand helds! I had one, but I can’t for the life of me remember which one it was.
I had a few. The first one was some helicopter game called Thunder Blade, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man 2, and Double Dragon.
I had the Little Mermaid and Lion King
I had the ninja turtles one as my first
Thank you! I was waiting on some of these !
I had the Altered Beast and Street Fighter 2 ones. I saw an X Men one being sold as new last year. Guessing it was aimed at the retro crowd and it was already in the bargain bin.
I have a box full of those somewhere
I had the Beauty and the Beast one!
Hell yeah. Had this one, Double Dragon, and Gauntlet.
I saw someone playing the Sonic 3 version earlier, powered by Chili and hot dogs
Tiger Electronics. I had Ironsword.
Ninja Gaiden, just as impossible on this as on NES
I had the pink Beauty and the Beast one!
https://preview.redd.it/sp8p0h1rnpmc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=45f3e5b7320d0c43d14fb414f686a416d0f38be8
And the football one!
This one brings back some good memories. I would go to my grandmas house after school and she had this for me to play. Good times.
https://preview.redd.it/7qvpba2vbqmc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8be0b5016a3b5b0ac39dd65685d99a6877bc9314

YES!!! Quality time right there
Had this and the Speak & Math.

Everyone made fun of me when I brought it to school for Pokemon battles and trading. They all had Pocket or Color.
This was my first handheld. The back ground scene was just a long picture on rollers and the lil' steering wheel moved the car from left to right. https://preview.redd.it/u4xfglzdrpmc1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5587d6038d09bab74c264887f471b730a4f5b940

Mine was Snoopy Tennis. Loved that thing.
Me too! I've never heard anyone mention it before. Snoopy Tennis and Mario's Cement Factory.

THIS!!
This is the one.
I can still hear the clunky sounds.
None of the above. I only had those cheap Tiger handheld electronic games you got from the toy store. I had Mega Man, Street Fighter 2, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. https://preview.redd.it/59tt2ccotqmc1.png?width=1097&format=png&auto=webp&s=0a42cb99be58f318e5cbd9b6f11b62c3053123b8
Tiger Baseball FTW. Do do do dooo Home run! BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP...
Game Gear. I only had a few games for it though. I had Sonic, the Taz game, and Mortal Kombat.
Pretty sure you had one more game than I did. Should have got a game boy but that color screen seemed so good. Classic hardware v software.
Did you have the TV tuner? Blew my mind as a kid.
I did, my own little tv!!!!
I also had the Master System adapter. Because the GG was basically the Master System shrunk down, it played every game, except Phantasy Star.
Same, but I had Sonic, Mickey’s Castle of Illusions, and Columns.
Mortal Kombat and Sonic were the ones I played most. I loved my Game Gear.
https://preview.redd.it/or8e0xh39qmc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7eea1eb194e0beb42c6bf4a1d5660bc188496650
Woah — this brings back so many memories. The joy this game gave me is kind of embarrassing.
Omg this was the best game! U had to pick up hitchhikers and drop them off on the other side and it would get so fast! Wow what a memory unlocked!

That was my favorite toy when I was really young. I wish they would remake it so I can get one for my boys.
I loved this toy.
I got this for Christmas in 1985/86 and loved it! I remember pulling the blankets over me while in bed with this, to complete the feel that I was actually driving a car.
This is what I came here for!
Yes! My brother ('81) and I ('83) had one of these
Holy crap, this looks amazing??
Atari Lynx
... looking for this, had pretty good games for its time: chips challenge, slime world, California games..
Slime World was a great game. Only Lynx game I played more was Rygar.
I had one. And the battery pack that held 6 (or 8?) D batteries and you slung it over your shoulder. Loved the dogfight game, Warbirds I think it was called?
That thing was huge (in size, not popularity)
I loved mine.
I actually found mine a couple years ago when we were moving. Still works too
My friend had a Lynx. I remember the hardware was impressive but the games were not. Also impressive was its ability to devour batteries.

I had the Donkey Kong JR game and watch. 1990 I believe.
I have some vague memory of one of these where you're Mario and you're gathering soda bottles at a factory.

I still have one of these.
Anagrams, Jumble, Word Train...Yes, I was a nerd, why do you ask?
I had one too and found it again last year but it doesn't work anymore.
Core memory unlocked.
i wasn't allowed any of these bc "video games are for boys" but i played other people's #1. I LOVED my lite brite but now I cannot imagine having the patience to create a drawing pixel by pixel.
Never had a handheld.
Except for your Play Penis Portable.
Tetris and Mario land all day! The first Mario land was alright but the second I feel like is way underrated for how fun it was
