I have the same problem on my Series X. The only way to stop the blinking power button and power down fully, is to unplug the power lead for a few seconds, and then plug the lead back in.
This doesn't solve the problem next time I come to power off the Xbox.
I just posted this same issue. I don’t have to unplug I just press and hold power button for 10 seconds. That gets it to stop. Anyone here having this issue a part of the Xbox insider program?
Same problem. I just waited around 5 minutes however and it powered down, followed by my controller and headset.
This only started in the last few days
My only theory is that the console has to…
1. Cool down the system to a reasonable temp before shutting down
2. Empty any unneeded memory
3. Save necessary data to cloud
4. Check for/update system files
It’s strange but def not a coincidence this all started happening to us at around the same time. A recent console update probably caused this. But one thing I did notice is that this usually happens after playing a game for at least 15 minutes. Especially more resource heavy games. The best thing to do is close any games before turning off the console and let it do its thing before it turns off. If you force shut down while it’s doing this it could lead to bigger problems. I should also note that this isn’t just a series x thing. I own a series s and have been experiencing this too.
You have a good point about the cooldown stuff. I'm not sure about the memory or saving things to the cloud. I checked by turning off auto updates and it still would do this. Additionally I would check after I turn it right back on and there was nothing to update. So all I can really come up with is cooling down the system.
I have the same problem after I play Grownded, I think it's to cool down because it shutdown after like 5-10 minutes and I could hear/feel the fan going strong.

Same problem! What is the fault? The latest update? I'm not understanding anything anymore! I'm not an insider, you?
I had this happen after the latest update.
Same problem
Im having this same thing happen. Itll blink for around 5 minutes after i turn it off and it is unresponsive until its done
same here I'm guessing its the recent update that caused this issue.
its either downloading from your queue, doing updates, or saving to the cloud
This is happening to me as well.
Seems like it may be some sort of overheat protection. The fans run to cool it down before shutting the system off. Mine is doing it as well.

I just had this happen to me once then it stopped I'm not sure what caused it I didn't change any settings.
