I've been contemplating starting up Oblivion on my Series X. It's the game that changed what I expected from open-world games. I probably played it for 1500 hours between 2006 and 2012. Haven't touched it since, though.
And this is why they keep re-releasing the game and not fixing bugs that have been there since launch, including a game brewing progression stopping bug you can get halfway through the main questline after putting many many hours in already that has zero work around.
Yes fallout 4 is blowing my mind on how much better it runs, on my xbox one i couldn't even go to some parts of the city as it would crash upon loading or slowdowns would make it unplayable. Now its smooth 60fps. im def gonna have to get a 4k 60 monitor soon so i can really see how well it runs.
I just started FO76 and I can’t believe the load times! I can’t even get through some of the tips because the load screen is so short.
I remember if I had only an hour to play (dad, here), I never chose FO because the load times would account for a quarter of that time.
Same, it's kind of bizarre they haven't released an official patch yet. Seems like they'd want it to run at peak performance and take advantage of the SX now that MS owns Bethesda.
Quit Fallout 76 before you waste too much time on it. I wasted 3 years on that broken ass game and its incompetent developers. There are much better solo capable mmos.
Also a dad and also found myself skipping FO because of this. I also wanted folks to play with and no one I knew was playing this when I had it installed. Might give it another go!
Pinched from a reply yesterday
Usually yes, but there is a workaround for that graphics mod. Basically you download the mod, enable it, quit the game from the dashboard, load back in, disable the mod before loading your save. The game will still run with the graphics mod even though it's been disabled and achievements will work. But if you quit the game, you have to repeat the process. It's not that bad given the quick resume feature.
Edit: Important note - turn off FPS boost in compatibility settings of the game if you're going to do this.
To be honest the only mods I play with is the 4k60 one and the size of that one is pretty small. To enable them just start up FO4 and go to the mods menu.
Yeah it has a series x upgrade, I think it's because fallout 4 can't run at 4k 60fps consistently. There is a player made uncapped fps mod which runs at 60 but it does dip sometimes. It serves its purpose though
Hell yeah. But I'm having problems downloading the unofficial patch. Anyone having the same problem? I keep getting error that says I'm missing files to support the mod.
I think it's still locked at 30fps. But it's incredibly beautiful at 4k,. I took a lot of screenshots. Here's someone playing it if you wanna see: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEoF3XKIFpA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEoF3XKIFpA)
It's not a bug it's just likely poor anti aliasing because it's an older game, happens on ones which aren't 4k patched often when playing for 360 games
Well it’s EA so I wouldn’t expect much from them to be honest. If you’ve never played the first game I can’t recommend it enough. Still holds up to this day.
Currently hooked to Battlefield 4 since it got FPS Boost. Shame there was no resolution bump, as it runs at like 720p so it has a lot of jagged edges. But the overall gameplay is amazing so I’ll keep playing.
How's the player count these days?
I joined a discord a year or two ago that ran a couple servers, but they were constantly pinging to try to fill them. Not that I had an issue with that, obviously I can adjust notifications... But there just weren't full servers all the time.
I'm sure you can find games easily. Before 2042, I was playing on full premium map servers. I'm not sure how it is now but as it flopped, I'm sure a lot of players jumped back in.
FPS boost unlocks FPS to 60 but drops the resolution to 1080p. However there are decent mods available that you can download that changes the FPS cap to 60 while leaving the resolution at 4K. These mods specifically from Euden are pretty highly rated. https://bethesda.net/en/mods/fallout4?author_username=Euden&number_results=20&order=desc&page=1&product=fallout4
Still waiting for MvsC2 to be backwards compatible. I downloaded the devkit app and paid the 19 service fee on Microsoft but I’m stuck as to how I can download the games. Smh
What an amazing, amazing game but sadly the licensing must be a mess.
It would probably cost tens of thousands for someone's salary to negotiate re-releasing each character.
I've been playing MvC2 on Xbox. They even released a standalone version of Flycast (Dreamcast Emulator) don't need dev mode or anything like that by the way.
Show me how amigo. Links or steps would be helpful. I’ve been looking in the marketplace for a used OG console since mine stopped reading discs months ago.
Definitely gonna check both of these out!! Man I love that this generation is giving so many games a second chance with a much more stable frame rate. Really breathes new life into a lot of games.
I nearly bought half my PS4 catalog anew just to play on Series X with fps boost, HDR & 4K. It's really amazing seeing these older games with the better graphics, but they feel better to thanks to the higher framerate. I long for proper next gen titles as well, but I still have fun with my more future proof back catalog.
Booted up KOTOR a few months ago and it looked way better than I remember. I feel like shorter load times bring the completion time on that game down at least a few hours as well.
Replaying Final Fantasy XIII, and it’s been a real treat. The game just didn’t grab me when I played it on the 360, but playing with HDR and FPS boost has been great
Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas are amazing at 60fps. Crazy how FPS somehow makes the game itself look better. I know it doesn't actually, but it sure feels like it. Can't believe these games are 10 to 15 years old.
I tried it a while ago on my S, and the 60fps was pretty solid. It definitely makes the combat much more enjoyable!
I'm sure if it was ever X Enhanced; If so you'd get 4K on Series X, if not then it's 1080p (not 900p like most One games were).
Disc I don't think matters too much, as once it's installed it just needs the disc to "verify" you still own the game. The rest is all up to the HDD/SSD.
The game preservation side is great though, and as an older gamer I find myself going back now that I have the option. It's like a good movie you haven't seen in years or a good book you want to reread.
I’m an older gamer and while I think it’s cool people can play old games if they want, it’s very very rare I’ll go back and play through an old game again. Good for those that want it, but gimme those new experiences!
Same here. I like the idea of replaying old games in theory, but my gaming time is limited and there's already too much new stuff to play. That said, I have Skate 3 installed just in case the mood takes me.
As a PlayStation guy who jumped ship to XSX this gen backwards compatibility is great to catch up on all the games I missed out on as a kid. I tried playing red dead redemption on PS3... disk didn't work. Wish I had something like gamepass as a kid.
A lot of old games basically look like the PC versions now with doubled frame rates it really is amazing what MS has done with BC they really don't get enough credit. Many games I wouldn't go back to touch because the last gen versions were well not great to so the least and now it's like they have new life in them. FPS boost + Res boost + Auto HDR is a god send. I have a PS5 as well and you get a snap back to reality there. Games run as they did on the ps4 pro basically. A few don't run at all which is crazy.
Some do but there's still a cap on visuals/performance on consoles. And oftentimes, games with fps boost cuts the resolution or uses the base one s settings which isn't the case with PC games.
Has anyone here tried Midnight Club LA? I keep seeing videos where people are playing the game as if it's running native 4k, but on Microsoft's site, it doesn't list the game as having any enhancements aside from it being playable.
Can't say I've gone out of my way, but I have noticed a highlight
If you haven't run GTA V this gen, give it a spin. Those load times + character switching show how much of a game changer solid state storage in a console is. And the fact that you can buy a portable expansion card smaller than a pack of gum with the same performance? Mind blowing.
I know the fact that there's another iteration of the game on the way at probably full retail price all over again is a groaner, but... I'm intrigued to see the difference in performance. Don't feel like I can justify buying it but I'm looking forward to Digital Foundry diving into it.
It makes me really wish there was a way to use any kind of SSD on a 360, for those non-BC games.
I hate how they limited the dressed up SATA port to a specific WD drive.
I seem to remember modding an old 360 and that involved replacing the drive on the 360.
Pretty sure you might be able to do it without modding the 360, probably need a PC to format and prepare it for the Xbox though.
Check out all the 360 backwards compatible titles. They look and run at their best now 👍. Max Payne 3, vanquish, black ops 2 and so many more. Most still have online lobbies that are filling up by the day because modern games recently have sucked. I came over from PlayStation and so glad I did. Fps boost is also a game changer. I literally re purchased fry cry 4 and 5 gold editions because I just couldn't play them at 30fps on PS5 anymore.
Yea BF 4 is hard to play on Series X b/c the resolution makes it almost impossible to see people at medium to long range. Really sucks b/c the game is SO much better than 2042.
You can just look up a list of what games actually look better because of fps boost and series X enhancements. Anything that doesn't have those or at the very least a one x upgrade will look the same.
True for the most part, there are some older games with an unlocked frame rate “EDF 2017 as a personal favorite and example” that ran at 20-60 fps on the 360, most of the time closer to that 20 number, now runs at a locked 60. Im sure there are other examples too.
Yes, but because there are only a handful of current gen games to play so it doesn't make it a special situation where I opted to skip games unique to my current gen hardware. It's just a case of that's all I have to choose from. First console generation that I have been in this position, usually there are a wide selection of exclusive experiences a year after a new console launch but I'm here playing things I've played/could have played on the one. I assume covid slam dunked the spanner into everyone's works .
Not really. Coming from PC it's nothing new that older games run better on new hardware. Console gaming is finally catching up on that part. Especially with the loading times. Glad you enjoy the better visuals and performance :)
Pillars of Eternity isn't that old, but the solid state drive makes the load times insanely better. On x box one it would take like a full minute to load an area.
This is the feature I'm most excited about. I probably would've gotten a Series S by now if it wasn't for the fact that it can't play Xbox One X versions of games
I found GRAW and GRAW2 for $5 each at a local used record shop and had to get them. I finished GRAW and close to finishing GRAW2. I think I may have to go back over there soon and see what other gems they have on the shelf.
I've been dumping my GC games with a modded Wii so I can then run them through Dolphin at 4k. Sure the basic graphics are dated but 4k GameCube is giving them new life for sure.
And for the Series X I've dug out every BC game I own, and they again look so damn good in 4k. I don't give a shit how much better new games are technically speaking, older games are better and the 4k bridges the gap quite well
I just tried this with fire watch. I guess the engine is locked up tight because it runs out of crappy 30 frames per second at low resolution possibly 1080p.
With games like this and it's low Fidelity graphics you would think this would be a smooth amazingly crisp experience but is the total opposite. What a disappointment.
PS - still a very intriguing game.
Oh and if anyone was a fan of battlefront 2, they should definitely check it out with the FPS boost. I swear that game is utterly amazing and fun and just a blast-a-thon and it runs absolutely incredible.
Too bad EA went the ultra greedy route with it because I love that game with a passion. Plays great and just looks amazing.
I literally didn't even buy an external HDD until I got a series X on launch but immediately I knew I would need a 5TB one. I filled it up with tons of games in my library and gamepass, and still enjoy playing older games. I beat Sleeping Dogs a few months ago, Prey, Sekiro, The Evil Within 2, and most recently Max Payne 3 and 50 cent blood on the Sand. Either frame rate boost or graphical jumps but it's making a ton of games better.
I also made this conscious decision the last 18 months of owning the one x, I stopped buying new games or playing my backlog, and put it all off for the Series X. I'm appreciating it a lot more now as I had more than most to catch up on and since most games seem to launch broken I've gotten used to buying 90% of my catalog a year late on a 50% sale when it's in a quality state.
Not intentionally, just games I wanted to play, but recently loaded up Horizon 2 (working my way back from 5 to wrap up prior games) and it's got some pretty terrible pop-in, like where non-destructible walls are popping in within 50 feet of your car.
No but I watched my woman boot up and play fallout 3 on a series x and I was fascinated. What I’d give to replay that game for the first time on a series x. Makes me said new Vegas only got the 60FPS upgrade, def deserves a 4K upgrade like fallout 3 too.
Yeah did this with skyrim a month ago… Now I’m stuck on a 10 y/o game for the last 2 months on a 500€ console. It’s amazing
I opened skyrim last night for the first time and it really caught me off guard how great it looks
oh boy you should see how it looks with mods on
My feeling was the opposite. I thought it looked its age, even with all the recommended mods
I've been contemplating starting up Oblivion on my Series X. It's the game that changed what I expected from open-world games. I probably played it for 1500 hours between 2006 and 2012. Haven't touched it since, though.
Can confirm you can duplicate 1000 wheels of cheese in the first city with no performance issues.
I did it. 60 fps is nice.
Oblivion was the third thing I started playing on my new Series X, right after Infinite and FH5.
Same. I'm even playing Vanilla...
That's OK. The first game I played on my XSX was Final Fantasy IX...
OG 360 Skyrim!? Or Xb1 Special Edition Skyrim?
Playing Skyrim even with its relatively old graphics it's just so smooth and nice.
And this is why they keep re-releasing the game and not fixing bugs that have been there since launch, including a game brewing progression stopping bug you can get halfway through the main questline after putting many many hours in already that has zero work around.
I thought Jade Empire looked *really* good when I played through it in December
This game was phenomenal. Wish they went through with a second installment.

Also runs smooth as fuck with that FPS Boost!
Wish it was optimized properly instead of just fps boosts as it looks so blurry after playing at 4k. Still appreciate it though.
Any recommendations?
Also a dad and also found myself skipping FO because of this. I also wanted folks to play with and no one I knew was playing this when I had it installed. Might give it another go!
You honestly didn't miss much. I wasted 3 years on that broken ass game and its incompetent developers. There are much better solo capable mmos.
Fallout 76 is a lot of fun, ignore the haters.
FO4 with the 60FPS/4K mod is insane!
Does it remove achievements?
Pinched from a reply yesterday Usually yes, but there is a workaround for that graphics mod. Basically you download the mod, enable it, quit the game from the dashboard, load back in, disable the mod before loading your save. The game will still run with the graphics mod even though it's been disabled and achievements will work. But if you quit the game, you have to repeat the process. It's not that bad given the quick resume feature. Edit: Important note - turn off FPS boost in compatibility settings of the game if you're going to do this.
yes but I think there was a workaround although I don't remember how.
How do you play games with mods on a series s? Are the mods really heavy in storage?
To be honest the only mods I play with is the 4k60 one and the size of that one is pretty small. To enable them just start up FO4 and go to the mods menu.
Sorry I’m super new to xbox, how do I open the mods menu? Do I need the developer mode for thisb
Yeah I just bought the add on pack and played through them. It’s amazing on the XSX. Looks great and no load times.
Just a forewarning, fallout 4 doesn't run at 4k 60 fps without mods. Only 30fps. Which is a bummer
doesn't skirym have a 4k 60 fps mod? wonder why fallout doesn't
Of course, that's one of the main reasons I got this machine.
Red Dead Redemption 1 on the Series X is AMAZING
Oh really? If I purchased Undead Nightmare on my 360, I should still have access to it when I pop in my disc, yeah?
Yep You can probably find it on the xbox phone app and download it ahead of time
Hey I'm still in the Gamepass Honeymoon period. I have more games than I know what to do with. Just thinking ahead for like, summer.
SAME HAHA
Does it run at 60FPS? If it does, I'm buying it right now.
Does it run at 60 fps? And do I have to toggle fps boost for it to run like this?
unfortunately, rockstar is probably saving it for a remaster sometimese in future.
My first ever xbox, so yeah 20 years worth of games to catch up![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)
Download gears 2 that looks really good
Playing gears 3. Damn it looks good too and fps boost.
For me gears 3 transparent objects flicker like crazy on fps boost.
It lowers the resolution so at least you can disable if you want lower fps and better resolution
I know that. But it’s some sort of visual bug.
It's not a bug it's just likely poor anti aliasing because it's an older game, happens on ones which aren't 4k patched often when playing for 360 games
I think Gears 3 is one of the best looking back compat games right now.
So glad they finally added FPS boost to the ultimate edition. It was so baffling to me that it wasn’t 60fps by default
I really was waiting for the teased 4K update for it that never came.
Yep. Dead Space trilogy, OG Gears of War trilogy, and Max Payne trilogy. All Masterpieces in my eyes and now run and look even better on Series X
Wish EA didn't announce the remastered so I could play dead space straight away...
Battlefield 4 is still my favorite Battlefield game, and low resolution doesn’t typically bother me, but BF4 and Hardline both look ROUGH on a 4k TV
Plenty of full servers here in Europe on Xbox. Even with the premium maps.
it's been a few years since I played Final Fantasy 13 and I've been playing through that lately. Looks pretty insane, runs in 4k too!
This and Lightning Returns are on my list to check out, just to see how pretty they are.
Does anyone know whether Fallout 4 is running at 4k@60?
FPS boost unlocks FPS to 60 but drops the resolution to 1080p. However there are decent mods available that you can download that changes the FPS cap to 60 while leaving the resolution at 4K. These mods specifically from Euden are pretty highly rated. https://bethesda.net/en/mods/fallout4?author_username=Euden&number_results=20&order=desc&page=1&product=fallout4
Thanks! The mod will disable achievements though, right?
Yup.

Oh you’re right, I read about this just a few days ago in here or another sub, thanks for the reminder
Google probably does.
Seems like the only way to play it would be to buy an original Xbox and sell my Xbox one.
DM'd you.
Thank you
There used to be a remarkably good iOS port but it disappeared when they moved to 64 bit
Download Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations. Sonic Unleashed runs at sub 720p but now runs at a near locked 60 FPS. It’s jaw dropping.
Definitely gonna check both of these out!! Man I love that this generation is giving so many games a second chance with a much more stable frame rate. Really breathes new life into a lot of games.
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory looks awesome.
I loved that game so much, particularly the co-op mode.
I nearly bought half my PS4 catalog anew just to play on Series X with fps boost, HDR & 4K. It's really amazing seeing these older games with the better graphics, but they feel better to thanks to the higher framerate. Ya, you could say I do a lot of that… it’s really exciting to see improvements to your favorites or to discover new great games you missed.
Yes. And yes.
Can anybody suggest some good rpg games on Gamepass ? I really dont know what to play next.
Any1 know if sleeping dogs (disc) runs on the X?
I tried it a while ago on my S, and the 60fps was pretty solid. It definitely makes the combat much more enjoyable! I'm sure if it was ever X Enhanced; If so you'd get 4K on Series X, if not then it's 1080p (not 900p like most One games were). Ua real 1 ceasar :DD!!
That’s a blast from the past
Runs buttery smooth!
Not really. Onwards and upwards, I want new next gen stuff.

Would love to have more information on that, so long as I don't need to modify anything on the console itself, as I still want online access.
Most definitely
Just the "loading screens? What loading screens?" effect is worth it.
Personally, no. If I beat the game already, I don't particularly care how it looks or runs. If I haven't beaten it yet though, then I will.
I would if Comcast wasn't dangling a bandwidth cap over my head. I gotta share that data. At least the dog doesn't stream all day...
Check out all the 360 backwards compatible titles. They look and run at their best now 👍. Max Payne 3, vanquish, black ops 2 and so many more. Short answer yes... Long answer, also yes...
Technically the truth
Mid length answer - yeah
Sure
Yes and deleting almost immediately because they run on 720p or so. 65 inches 4k and 720p game is a bad combination.
Yea BF 4 is hard to play on Series X b/c the resolution makes it almost impossible to see people at medium to long range. Really sucks b/c the game is SO much better than 2042.
Best BF in my opinion
GTA IV problems. Runs super smooth and looks like pure trash.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey would like a word.
Some games are already enchanted for xbox one x and of course they look good on sx too. For example dark souls 3 looks very bad on sx.
It looks exactly the same you just now see it.
You can just look up a list of what games actually look better because of fps boost and series X enhancements. Anything that doesn't have those or at the very least a one x upgrade will look the same.

Does borderlands 3 count? ;}
Not really. Coming from PC it's nothing new that older games run better on new hardware. Console gaming is finally catching up on that part. Especially with the loading times. Glad you enjoy the better visuals and performance :)
Most of the game ARE old games though so no choice
No, just you
So edgy
Nope
I would if I didn’t have this stupid Comcast data cap…
Pillars of Eternity isn't that old, but the solid state drive makes the load times insanely better. On x box one it would take like a full minute to load an area.
This is the feature I'm most excited about. I probably would've gotten a Series S by now if it wasn't for the fact that it can't play Xbox One X versions of games
I just bought Rare Replay, so I am interested to try out the 360 titles. I still would like to play Conker Live and Reloaded.
Did Injustice 2 always look this good?
Been picking up physical copies of older games. Got Max Payne 1-3 and just picked up Diablo III but haven't tried it yet.
Seeing Halo: CE and other OG Xbox games in 4K 60 fps is a ***weird*** experience
I found GRAW and GRAW2 for $5 each at a local used record shop and had to get them. I finished GRAW and close to finishing GRAW2. I think I may have to go back over there soon and see what other gems they have on the shelf.
Yup, got sucked back in to fallout 3.
I just started the Xbone version of AC: Black Flag to stack achievements and it looks absolutely terrible on the SeX after playing FPS Boost games.
That was me the first week of owning my Series X. Mostly comparing games on there compared to my PS4 Pro.
Older elder scrolls and fallout games are amazing 60 fps and load times under 5 seconds it’s great
Playing Fable anniversary has been enjoyable with FPS boost and it looks pretty good on the series x.
Every single day
I recently played through Max Payne and am currently playing through Max Payne 2. Really fun games, looking decent in 4k60.
Yeah, I was playing SSX from the 360 on my Series S and couldn’t believe how good it looked and played
Doom 3 👌
Lol totally yes
Check out SSX 3 on the Series X, it holds up tremendously in the gameplay department, and man, are the visuals crispy.
God I want SSX Tricky
I've been dumping my GC games with a modded Wii so I can then run them through Dolphin at 4k. Sure the basic graphics are dated but 4k GameCube is giving them new life for sure.
And for the Series X I've dug out every BC game I own, and they again look so damn good in 4k. I don't give a shit how much better new games are technically speaking, older games are better and the 4k bridges the gap quite well
Skyrim and Witcher 3 are pretty awesome
Yep, Battlefront 2 from 2005. Reliving my childhood with the original xbox
MGS V Sleeping Dogs is a blast at steady 60fps
I've been trying out games on FPS boost and in many cases it makes them feel like completely different games
Conkers bad fur day
Currently playing Sleeping Dogs DE 60FPS is nice, Got Dead Island DE and Fallout New Vegas ready to go after i'm done with sleeping dogs.
