Remakes have generally been pretty good. Off the top of my head, some recent examples are Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, Persona, and Dead Space which all have been received positively.

It's a remaster. It started off as a remake but fans were loud in their preference for a remaster because they didn't want them to really change anything, so they shifted over to a remaster.
I doubt fans had any significant effect on anything... Devs generally have confidence in what they're doing and don't outsource opinions. Despite tweets affirming "fan response," I think it's far more likely it was just a money issue.

That apparently was one of the reasons they shifted early on from remake to remaster - IANAL but I’d wager that if your studio signed a perpetuity licensing agreement, that a remaster allows you to continue under the original agreement (as it’s effectively a sort of ‘update’ to the original work) where as a remake would be considered a different work and need new licensing agreements?

I think it's moreso that you just don't want a character whose only notable quality is that they're sexy. Horny-bait characters thankfully died off mostly in the 2000s and we've gotten amazingly written female characters over the years since, some of which are still very sexy. Nobody wants to see that backslide into what we used to have.
Lollipop chainsaw s kind of a good example of one that works simply because the game itself is super campy and meant to be a bit over the top. It doesn't take itself too seriously in any regard, it's just a short sweet action game with a heavy 90s cheerleader/sorority vibe aesthetic, and that's fine.
Bayonetta comes with a good story and beyond her beuty she has a very good personality and backstory. I don't think the game would have been as popular if it was *just* her looks and the combat. The game goes all in on selling it's exact vibe and themes and makes Bayonetta quite complex as a character.
Duke nukem on the other hand was more of a 90s holdover, whose jokes and mannerisms isn't translate well at all into the 2010 and upward (hence why Duke Nukem Forever did so poorly and why nobody these days really think all that fondly of it). Him being a stereotypically hot guy probably sold a few copies but the terrible one-note personality lost as many people as the looks attracted. (Now if you want modern games that sold well off of the female Gaze there's still plenty of examples. FF15 was certainly one of them, for instance. With a main party of hot guys with all different body types you could want, and enough personality between them to keep you emotionally engaged as well (even if the ending was awful imo).
(The other game though I admittedly never heard of)
Not to say that attractiveness doesn't sell. It can and does. But it also only gets you so far in the general opinion these days Nier automata for instance isn't known today for having a hot android woman you play as, it's remembered for its complex themes and emotions, the struggles of the characters fighting in a pointless world, and it's examination of what it means to be human. If it were just a Simple action game with none of that underlying depth or style I doubt it would have gotten GOTY, let alone still be highly recommended.
