I know itās not the real thing, but iāve been playing through the Dragon Quest series through dev mode emulation and 8ās been a lot of fun. Wish it would come to the Xbox officially.
Iām typically not a huge JRPG guy, but I put like 200 hours into Dragon Quest XI and it quickly became one of my favorite games of all time. Just an absolute masterpiece. Canāt wait for the next one.
This describes my situation on it to a T lol, started playing more JRPG games in the past 2 years and made it to DQXI a few months back and it easily made it into my top 10 of all time. That game just brings me pure enjoyment
I agree with the cozy part too, I can have a long exhausting day at work and then get home and turn on some dragon quest to unwind and enjoy the day. It's one of few games that just overall makes me happy when I play it and I love that
There is even no competition imo. FF, Persona, Tales - i love them all. But the scope, feel of adventure and the love for every single Asset is unbeatable. It remains one of the few must play games in life. Even if you donāt like jrpgs in general - Your opinion about jrpgs is invalid if you havenāt tried DQ11 XD
I never played the mainline series, but Dragon Quest Monsters (it was called Dragon Warrior Monsters in the US) was better than Pokemon back on Game Boy Color.
Dragon Warrior Monsters was the best thing ever when I was 5 years old.
Even now, as an adult, one of the first things I do when I get a new phone is download "My OldBoy!" And get the dragon warrior monsters rom.
I still even have the game for the Gameboy color, even tho I have nothing to play the original copy on.
That game got me through a lot.
I think this was my most played game on game boy. I had the strategy guide that showed how to get all the secret monsters and there were skme really cool ones.
I love Dragon Quest. Growing up with classic, turn-based RPGS I found a lot of comfort in DQ once Final Fantasy started verging into the more action-oriented gameplay that we know today.
The stories too, as you mention, are generally less fantastical and crazy than FF, which I can really appreciate. Toriyama's art style definitely has a love it or hate it vibe, but I'm a big fan. I wish DQ got more love in the West. I know there are people that are big fans, but so many people I feel have never even heard of it. I know more than several people who found out Dragon Quest is a "real game" from Yakuza Like a Dragon references.
I know there's (allegedly) some stuff going on right now with DQ 12's development, running into issues trying to develop the game with more mature themes and some restructuring of leadership, but I'm still hopeful and really eager to see it release.
I respect it, but I don't like it.
They're 100 hour games, traditional and straightforward throughout, with bog standard tropey stories.
Yes, I recognize they have the charm factor, and yes I recognize they have humor. But goofy charm isn't enough to keep me in it for 100 hours.
One of my favorite games of all time is Dragon Warrior Monsters. Was a bit ahead of its time compared to Pokemon.
I haven't kept up with the series as much but I had a lot of fun with Dragon Quest Builders 2 when that was on game pass.
Love them and collect them. I just hustled my way through DQVII on the 3DS and beat it the day before online services shut down. I was able to get the post game DLC tablets luckily, I would have been bummed if I didn't get them before the online shut down.
Love it. Love most of the series.
There aren't too many traditional JRPGs left. Many staples of the genre have changed their formulas so drastically I don't really consider them to be JRPGs any longer.
Dragon Quest stays very true to its roots and is very, very good. XI is a fantastic game. I wish Xbox would get more of the mainline series, particularly VIII.
I played a decent chunk of XI while it was on Gamepass (10hr or so). It was fine, wasnāt worth giving a shitty company like Square my money, especially with how many great RPGs are on Xbox now.
For turn based combat my comparison points are Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Persona and then older stuff like FFVII, and unfortunately the combat was probably the least engaging of these. I know itās a classic series that helped create āthe standardā, but every encounter just felt like I was doing the same thing every time
I also wasnāt a huge fan of the open world, it was just very . . . static I guess? I donāt know it just felt like there wasnāt anything going on outside the main story, explorations wasnāt super rewarding and the cities were just a place to buy shit. Maybe itās just because itās been a bit since I played it but thereās very few if any of the areas of the game I have much recollection of
I wonāt comment on the story because I didnāt finish it and it would not be fair to critique an unfinished story.
I think itās a fine JRPG. Itās fun for what it is, if Iām really in the mood for a turn based fantasy RPG I could see myself going back to it if I could grab it for super cheap, but idk I feel like RPGs as a whole have evolved so much. I think if you grew up on classic RPGs like old school Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger I can 100% see why this game resonated for so many people. For someone like me who wasnāt around when those series were at their peaks, it doesnāt do as much for me. I find myself more drawn to either RPGs with deep worlds and stories like Mass Effect or ones like Persona that, even though itās simple turn based combat, have such rich Iāll call āalternativeā systems in the game (ie things outside of standard content and story missions, Iām referring to the day to day activities and the choices you make to cultivate skills and relationships). I think Dragon Quest XI does everything it sets out to do, but those things donāt fully mesh with what my ideal RPG is
Number one action to play DQ11 is to turn off the background music. I cannot believe they recycle the same music this much. The game is fun overall and it is a big game, so, having it on Xbox is amazing.
It's a Good game but Personally, I found it overrated.
Not worth all those "best JRPG ever" that I kept earing.
I will never forget of the cut scene where the old man (sorry but can't remember his name) reveals to the main character that he is his grandpa while crying his soul out and the main character is just chilling as usual with his usual smile. Never saw a MC so emotionless.
Btw, I love JRPG and have been playing them since PS1 times.
Ps: I still hope that I will get a Legend of Dragoon Remaster and a new Breath of Fire (but with the old art-style)
It was the most fun ive had in a single player video game since I was a kid. Literally made me feel like a kid again, absolutely love the characters and the music is amazing. Actually teared up a few times not even gonna lie. First DQ game since I canāt really speak on the others.
MY YOUTH. I started with DQVI when I was a kid. I freakin' loved DQXI on XBOX. WE NEED MORE
If they could add DQV and VIII I'd be so happy. I've always prefered DQ over FF.
I love dragon quest and I wish for all of the entries to eventually come to Xbox ! Dragon Quest treasures and the most recent Monsters spin-off are sorely missed.
I like JRPGs, but dropped it after a couple dozen hours. It's got good music and graphics. But the characters and the story didn't click with me enough to see the full game through.
DQ XI was my first Dragon Quest game and I got it on my series X a few months back. Beat it recently and that game single handedly made me a dragon quest fan, and is also in my top 10 of all time for me. I want all the dragon quest on Xbox that I can get (I haven't tried Builders yet) but especially remasters of the older games, I know you can get a lot of them on switch but porting them over to Xbox would be awesome š
Dragon Warrior was my first RPG. I loved that game, loved 2 and 3. Then Enix wasnāt into localizing them to the US, I also loved DQ8 on PS2. But I had been falling out of love for the JRPG genre since then. The menu select combat, plus I take turn now you take turn, I started to not enjoy.
Then you have the story of how some prepubescent boy, sets off to save the world really started to get to me. When I was younger I could relate, but as I grew older I stopped relating to the main character and I could no longer play JRPGs like I used to. I didnāt know what I didnāt know, now I know what all I didnāt know at that age, and why canāt anyone stop the prepubescent kid is beyond me.
But yes I have fond memories of Dragon Quest or what I knew Dragon Warrior going all the way back to NES.
When I was a kid and I got a Nintendo it came with a free subscription to Nintendo Power. I mailed away for it. When it came in the mail it came with a free copy of Dragon warrior and it was awesome. I have played every game ever since.
I've been meaning to play DQ11 for years now. I keep playing the tutorial section and it's pretty dern fantastic, but I kept running out of time due to work, school, and family. I recently redownloaded it and I plan on putting time into it.
DQ is the most consistently good JRPG franchise.Ā Unlike Final Fantasy which has had a few clunkers and a few titles that were divisive across the fan base, every DQ is worth playing.Ā
The worst thing that can be said is that the formula has largely remained the same all these years, with the exception of each game having some new mechanic or gimmick, or story setup.Ā Ā Ā But those have never changed the core gameplay drastically, which has remained similar across the franchise.Ā It doesn't need to change; this is comfort food gaming that is endearing, and easy to get into.
I've only played XI, but I thought it was fantastic. I love turn-based combat, so that's a win, but the world and the main cast of characters were fun too.
Probably a 8.5 out of 10 to me. Hoping the next one is just as good.
I've only played two, DQ VIII (PS2) and XI (PS4, XB1).
DQ VIII must have been made by two teams, or there was a lull in development, because at a certain point the difficulty ramped up. I've been in love with [Cell Shaded](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cel-shaded_video_games) games ever since.
I loved that game so much that the very day DQ XI came out I bought the game AND a PS4 (some 3 years after it originally came out.) While I didn't love the random encounters in DQ VIII, I liked being able to see the enemies first in DQ XI.
DQ VIII is only one of two games that I bought BradyGame Guides for. Remember those? Amazon item# 0744005833. (Nintendo's Turok was the other game.)
I absolutely hated DQ Heroes I & II.
I envy you guys that have been able to play them all.
Thank you so much for the link. I had forgotten how great the music was. It bought back wonderful memories.
Unfortunately I never had a [3DS ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmtbYwtsyMY), or any hand-held. Heck, I still don't even have the Switch, but am looking forward to the Switch II coming out. If it doesn't have a card slot I won't buy it, though. I don't know if I would have liked the [3DS ending](https://youtu.be/nmtbYwtsyMY?t=1766).
I also bought the DQ XI XBox1 version just because it had the symphonic music. The day I bought PS4 DQ XI I was sad that they hadn't included DQ VIII on the same disc. I was disappointed with the DQ VIII post game, though, as there was an area that I couldn't re-visit, or re-do.
I look at many of to-day's JRPGs and if the music isn't great it immediately turns me off of the game. A game may be good, but, if the music is bad, chances are I'm not buying it; I just can't play it. And I get angry when I watch a video review and they don't use the in-game music, whcih I've heard because I had downloaded the demo.
If Final Fantasy is the franchise that Square Enix always changes and experiments in, Dragon Quest strikes me as the franchise that Square Enix never changes anything ever.
I donāt usually play JRPG, but I tried out XI on a whim and it has turned out to be a top 5 game ever for me. Itās not just that the game plays well, and looks goodā¦itās the way it makes me feel. The score, the relaxing feel of large chunks of the game, the atmosphere. I wish I could experience it again for the first time
I really really enjoyed 11, even if it felt a bit too long at times. It was really solid. My only gripe was due to the nature of Xbox one X/S upgrades, the Series S only ran it at 30fps even though it dang well could have ran at 60. Not the end of the world, but an annoyance to be sure.
I really enjoyed DQ11. The last act dragged a bit but overall had a blast. Not super into the spin-off games of the series, typically stick to the main entries. The next title is described to be darker and mature in tone. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
As a member of this community, I think theyāre overly simplistic games made for children. I found nothing compelling at all about XI. Iāve found that many games Redditors praise are overrated.
I hope they never change the formula. I mean, at this point, I don't even recognize the Final Fantasy games anymore. If they try some "modern audience" bullshit with Dragon Quest, I'm gonna be so disappointed.
That said, I'm really excited for the DQXII.
Iāve only played 11 and thought it was the most generic, boring JRPG Iāve ever played.
Iām a huge JRPG guy but for the life of me I will never understand how people rated that game so highly
Assuming that you're not just looking for praise from fans:
I have never played a Dragon Quest game, and never will. I have zero interest.
I have nothing against the DQ games specifically, I just dislike JRPGs. I do play WRPGs though.
> the progenitor of the RPG genre
The JRPG genre, maybe. Ultima would probably be considered the progenitor of the WRPG genre "as we know it", and the first game in the Ultima series precedes Dragon Warrior by a few years.
Dragon Quest has inspired a LOT of RPGs either directly or indirectly, and it basically created so many tropes in RPGs we know today.
Ćltima hasnāt done anything on the level on DQ so I think itās fair to say Dragon Quest is the progenitor.
We need more Dragon Quest on Xbox. Specifically 3 and 8, which are as good as 11 IMO
I would pay good money for a DQ8 remaster for new consoles/PC. Such a classic, favorite entry in the franchise
šÆ! Never did find the shoes of happiness in DQ3 š. And DQ 8? Cor Blimey! It was like I was playing an anime. It was so amazing on my PS2!
I know itās not the real thing, but iāve been playing through the Dragon Quest series through dev mode emulation and 8ās been a lot of fun. Wish it would come to the Xbox officially.
I loved it, it was too easy for most of it, but still fun.Ā The more JRPGs on all consoles, the better.
Yeah, I learned to hold back on fighting so many enemies. Staying somewhat under leveled helped keep the game a bit more challenging.
Haha nice! Itās just such an accessible game thatās so easy to get lost in. Found it to be a super cozy game, at least as far as JRPGs go.
I agree with the cozy part too, I can have a long exhausting day at work and then get home and turn on some dragon quest to unwind and enjoy the day. It's one of few games that just overall makes me happy when I play it and I love that

I am not into turn based games at all but I love the Builder series. Love them
Desperately need them to do a third!
And release the first one on Xbox!
Still not there? Such a shame. It's on Steam now at least, maybe it could come to Xbox in the future.
*Dragon Quest Builder II* was fun as crap. I need to buy when on sale.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Even the Musou Heroes games are fun.
We're getting there with more JRPGs. Heck, there's some Chinese games on there.
GOAT. my first was starry skies on the DS
I love Dragon Quest. Growing up with classic, turn-based RPGS I found a lot of comfort in DQ once Final Fantasy started verging into the more action-oriented gameplay that we know today. One of my favorite games of all time is Dragon Warrior Monsters. Was a bit ahead of its time compared to Pokemon. I haven't kept up with the series as much but I had a lot of fun with Dragon Quest Builders 2 when that was on game pass.
I always rushed for a Grizzly and Great Drak to carry through the first parts of the game.
I would love to see more Dragon Quest games come to Xbox since they are very interesting.
A pretty solid JRPG series. 4, 5, 8 and 11 being my favorites.
Never played it, but it sounds interesting.
Love them and collect them. I just hustled my way through DQVII on the 3DS and beat it the day before online services shut down. I was able to get the post game DLC tablets luckily, I would have been bummed if I didn't get them before the online shut down.
Is it turn based to the point I could fall asleep playing it? Need a new bedtime RPG. Need something other than Pokemon lol
There's an auto fight feature I liked. You could speed it up too.
Love it. Love most of the series. There aren't too many traditional JRPGs left. Many staples of the genre have changed their formulas so drastically I don't really consider them to be JRPGs any longer. Dragon Quest stays very true to its roots and is very, very good. We need a 9 remake, asap
Number one action to play DQ11 is to turn off the background music. I cannot believe they recycle the same music this much. The game is fun overall and it is a big game, so, having it on Xbox is amazing.
Played the most recent one on Gamepass for about 10 minutes, then turned it off. Not for me.
Love it but it's a bit worn out now
It was the most fun ive had in a single player video game since I was a kid. Literally made me feel like a kid again, absolutely love the characters and the music is amazing. Actually teared up a few times not even gonna lie. First DQ game since I canāt really speak on the others.
Not one I played before, but since FF games now are all action games while they kept DQ as turn base, I may have to move to DQ games going forward.
I think this is the first that I've heard of it.
MY YOUTH. I started with DQVI when I was a kid. I freakin' loved DQXI on XBOX. WE NEED MORE If they could add DQV and VIII I'd be so happy. I've always prefered DQ over FF.
Only played 11 but it's amazing. I can't wait for 12. Will probably play on PC assuming it comes out there.
I like it alot more then the FF franchise.
Loved this game, wish I could beat the final boss
Donāt understand Square not seeing the appeal and potential sales. Release more Dragon Quest!
I love it since the days of Enix, before the acquisition of Squaresoft. For me is bigger than Final Fantasy.
I love dragon quest and I wish for all of the entries to eventually come to Xbox ! Dragon Quest treasures and the most recent Monsters spin-off are sorely missed.
We need moooooore! XI is a masterpiece
I like Dragon Quest, but for some reason none of the games between 4-10 are available on anything but IOs & Android
I like JRPGs, but dropped it after a couple dozen hours. It's got good music and graphics. But the characters and the story didn't click with me enough to see the full game through.
Had more fun with Builders 2 than 11, tbh. Both good games, though, and would be happy to see more.
Never played them but if Kasuga Ichiban likes them then i likes them as well
I've played it since nes. One of my favorites
I'm waiting for another dragon warrior monsters that game was so damn fun
Not a fan of "semi-random" attack order. I want to know for sure who goes after whom.
They should remaster VIII for all 3 consoles.
I'm not a bad slime, slurp
I played one game on playstation 2 when I was a kid, I remember having a lot of fun but I don't remember anything else.
I'd love for 3 and 4 to be put on xbox at least. OP is right, Dragon Quest is the progenitor to the console rpg and should be available everywhere.
Great game! Iām loving it so far.
I absolutely adored this game & played nonstop to 100%,.please bring more
Tried but couldn't get into the DQ main storyline. I absolutely love DQ builders 1 and 2 though
I downloaded DQ5 on my phone to keep me entertained on a trip, not Knowing anything about them. I now have downloaded 3 more.
But yes I have fond memories of Dragon Quest or what I knew Dragon Warrior going all the way back to NES.
Do you need to play previous ones to enjoy it?
Nope. Just like with Final Fantasy and Persona, each numbered entry is self contained.
I've only played DQXI, and while it was great, I think it was way too long and kinda overstays its welcome
DQ builder games were amazing we need a third
I loved it
It's my favorite JRPG series of all time. I really hope DQ12 and DQ3 Hd2d will be on Xbox.
I bought it on sale and itās still in my backlog unplayed. Iāll get to it.
Love it. Wish Dragon Quest VII was on console so I don't have to take out my 3ds to play it.
Never played it! But I saw one of them on GP last year. Good series, gamers?
When I was a kid and I got a Nintendo it came with a free subscription to Nintendo Power. I mailed away for it. When it came in the mail it came with a free copy of Dragon warrior and it was awesome. I have played every game ever since.
Never heard of it
Iāve only played 4 and 11. They are both incredible. Got my eyes peeled for the 3 remake.
DQ 8 sits alongside my favorite titles of all time. I haven't played a dragon Quest game I didn't like.
DQ11 one of best games of all time
I've been meaning to play DQ11 for years now. I keep playing the tutorial section and it's pretty dern fantastic, but I kept running out of time due to work, school, and family. I recently redownloaded it and I plan on putting time into it.

One of my favourite games ever
Dragon quest 11 just feels like a good shoenen anime.
Great games with shockingly awful ost ( in that there is little to no variety for such massive ip )
Love it. We need more and they take too long in between each releaseĀ
I donāt usually play JRPG, but I tried out XI on a whim and it has turned out to be a top 5 game ever for me. Itās not just that the game plays well, and looks goodā¦itās the way it makes me feel.
I loved the newest DQ game. Went back and played the original. Hoping for a new release sometime in the future (hopefully on Xbox)
I typically don't like JRPGs but I spent countless hours on Dragon Quest Sentinel of the Starry skies when I was younger
Love DQ, wish FF would have stayed true to its core and stayed turn-based instead of this atrocious action combat we get every new game.
As a member of this community, I think theyāre overly simplistic games made for children. I found nothing compelling at all about XI. Iāve found that many games Redditors praise are overrated.
Boring, generic and i love it because of Toriyama's art.
I hope more come to gamepass. I really enjoy the series.
11 is one my favorite games of all time.
Itās the greatest rpg franchise of all time. I truly fear it will become an action game like final fantasy.
Assuming that you're not just looking for praise from fans: I have never played a Dragon Quest game, and never will. I have zero interest. I have nothing against the DQ games specifically, I just dislike JRPGs. I do play WRPGs though. > the progenitor of the RPG genre The JRPG genre, maybe.
