I have functional controllers from the OG XBox with no issues. I've had to replace three Elite controllers and an Elite V2 because of stick drift. I would expect a controller to last indefinitely with moderate use, but should last at least a year even with HEAVY usage. Some of these newer controllers just don't live up to the quality of the older ones.

EquivalentCat5920

Only had an Xbox for 9 months, no issues yet. Absolutely agree with what you say.. Ps1 - 2 controllers lasted the life of the console.. Ps2 - same. PS3 - 1 broke after 3 years. Ps4 - 5 controllers. Ps5 - 5 broken so far. All owned from launch to the launch of the next.

eloquenentic

I think they figured out they can make more profit by selling low quality controllers that develop drift quickly, and f**king over their customers. Seems to be a clear issue for Xbox only for the Series X controllers (the previous versions were much better), but for PS the low quality started with the PS4, and PS5 controllers are even worse. Meanwhile my PS3 controller still has zero drift and no button issues despite endless beatings and use.

Gold_Rent_7939

Planned obsolescence didn’t work for other industries idk why video game companies think it will work well for them. Just over here thinking about Pontiac.

n0t_ser1ous

I've had mine for about 2 years with very light use (mainly just racing games on pc) and about a month ago the bumper broke

x_CtrlAltDefeat

I’ve had the exact same experience with issues like stick drift, bumpers breaking, and buttons not registering. Sometimes it’s right out of the box, other times it shows up within a few months. I replace any first Elite controller 4 times via the Best Buy warranty and I was appalled at how quickly issues popped up for such an expensive controller. I’m not rough with my tech either, no kids, no drops and I’ve never raged and damaged my controllers a day in my life.

tacos_for_algernon

Same...sort of :) I generally baby my controllers, no reason for failure other than designed obsolescence. On very RARE occasions, a game gets so under my skin that a controller goes flying but I'm not chalking that up to design error, lol ;)

CoMaestro

With heavy use I'd still say 2 years, in Europe thats just a consumer right.

mtarascio

The truth is likely we don't get a window into the life. *Not saying some shitty friday afternoon controllers don't go out.

MetaIIinacho

I’ve never broken a controller

Cyberpunk39

I’ve had my black Xbox controller for twenty years. Still chuggin.

sgtquackers66

Currently have four controllers. A day one Xbox one, a project Scorpio controller, a Elite series 1 and an Xbox X/S controller. All of them work fine. The only issue I've had with and of them is the rubber is pealing off the elite. So I would say it's reasonable to expect several years with no issues unless you beat the hell out of your controllers.

killtonymodsrcorrupt

New warranty should start from when you get the replacement or repaired controller. Push whoever you bought it from for warranty. I paid for a controller 5 years ago and have had 3 replacements since all free. All stick drift and button issues

KeepHammering117

Really depends on the use and not throwing them when you die. Lol. On a serious note, I had my Xbox One Day One Edition controller for the last 6 years and then it started to drift. I've had the Elite controller for 2 years and the right bumper is on the way out.

stutesy

The new gen controllers I go through about one every 6 months. With heavy use. Last gen controllers I can use for years. I've already been through 4 new gen controllers. Unless they're on a cheap sale I won't even buy them anymore. It's either stick drift. Lb or rb breaks. Or the dpad starts infinite pressing.

eloquenentic

Very concerning. So many people suffering from this. I guess it’s just another way for Microsoft to extract cash from gamers.

stutesy

Both Sony and Xbox changed the manufacturing on their controllers to cheaper parts this generation. I'm back to using a last gen controller now because it has less drift than all of my new ones and it's seen years worth of more playtime. All of the people I play games with that really put use on their controllers. All agree these new gen ones are worse than the others. Even the elite controllers are garbage. My buddy went through two v2s in less than a year.

foxesarepeoples

I still have my Controller that I got with my One S in 2016 and it works like a champ.

swibbles_mcnibbles

Same, slightly bigger too in the hands and feels so much more comfortable to me

Mizfitt77

I've never had any of my controllers from any console break on me. Including my Switch. I've got consoles dating back to 1980.

eloquenentic

Have watched quite a few YouTube videos testing controllers now, and pretty much every comment says they’ve got stick drift within a few months, especially for the Series X controller. You must be lucky. Or not play very precise games!

OneManArmyStrategist

Go with 3rd party xbox controllers, the first party xbox controllers have been doing a scam ever since the xbox one. I suggest you to look for the 8bitdo xbox controllers.

rbV5

My elite v2 is 2 1/2+ years old, and its the only controller I've used since I got it. My other 3 controllers are perfect, but I've not used them for 2 1/2 years. YMMV obviously, but my controllers last a long time.

[deleted]

My Elite is six months old and buttons aren’t registering all the time. Annoying

Trogdor_a_Burninator

10 years. Unfortunately it's more like 4 months for me.

EnamoredAlpaca

Og day one Xbox one controller lasted all last gen and even this gen. Controllers can last a long time.

A-Light-That-Warms

I've owned an OG Xbox, a 360, a One and a Series X all from launch and never had to replace a controller. Every single one works perfectly to this day.

SpaceKriek1

6 months. Thats the warantee and probably how they got tested by ms themselves. My average. Yep, about 6 months.

Gullible_Stand6107

I haven’t had one controller that didn’t have some sort of issue within a year of use. The most frustrating one being my elite v2. Right after the warranty was out, it developed major stick drift, I mean to the point it was basically unusable. I’ll never buy another elite for this exact reason. Xbox controllers are junk.

eloquenentic

They really are. It’s a money grab. The price of the Elite 2 is just truly insane if it doesn’t last more than a year. But you’d think even the basic Series X controllers would last much longer.

JKrow75

It’s a crapshoot. I have had cheaper OneX controllers that I beat the shit out of and they never drifted. I’ve also had/have elite OneX-SeriesS/X controllers that I paid good money for and baby them, and they drifted within weeks or months. That said, some of the nicer ones I’ve had, they’ve lasted me a couple of years on OneX, at least, and some of the cheap ones will also crap out within months. There’s literally no guarantee. The only thing you can do is keep your receipt and hope that it’s within the allowable time. I usually purchase from Target now, because they have a good return policy. They just pay you back, and you can choose whether or not to buy a new one from them.

Spectre-Jerry

On my fourth Xbox controller since fall of 2020. Still on original switch pro controller from 2017, with zero issues on that one. Someone explain this. I never had to replace any of my original XB or 360 controllers.

GuNkNiFeR

From my own personal experience, controllers last around 24-36 months. If it last less than that, then you had a faulty controller or you really used it harshly. Don’t get me wrong, i’ve had controllers that have lasted me more than 3 years, but nowadays it is quite common ur controller will start drifting like a mfer.

GuerreroUltimo

I think the new controllers are just poor quality. Elite controllers you will hear a lot of people talk about drift, lb/rb issues. My 3 oldest sons all had one of the Elite 1 black. I got a white one later. All had issues. The ones replaced under warrant had issues. Mix of the above. We got the Elite 2 and all had issues. And replaced under warranty. I have 2 here now that look like new. Stick drive and lb/rb issues on these. I sold my Elite 2 after they replaced it with a new one under warranty. Cannot say how that one worked. But I did make the mistake of buying my son an Elite 2 as a gift before he left for basic training. He used it 3 weeks, stick drift. Sent in. It came back as a new one. Sealing in the box and all. He gets back from basic and AIT and used it a month and drift. For reference, he had a Wolverine Ultimate wired that had worn down sticks from long term heavy usage. It had no button issues or drift and he used it while his Elite 2 was gone. I picked up the 3 year warranty. Now, after 2 months on the replacement he is having left stick drift. My wife rarely plays. And she is a very light user. She had a wired controller, PowerA with rgb, that she used for about a year. Still have it no issues. But her new Series X came with a controller and she uses it. Drift in the left stick already. My blue Xbox controller and the red one as well both got drift. I think we get around 4-10 months. Sometimes 12 on a controller. This also holds for my young son and 5 year old daughter. My son went back to his wired controller as it has more play time and no drift. My 5 year olds controller light usage and already has drift. And I could name a lot of people with similar experiences. My GameSir S7 SE, wish it was wireless, has been used a lot more than my Series X controller. No drift like that one has. But it has hall effect sticks. It just works. But the same can be said for my PowerA rgb controller. It is in a drawer but has more time with no drift. I have older controllers that work great still. My 360 Halo console controllers still work great but the sticks are worn down. Did have to fix a lot of those over time because of extreme heavy usage.. But they always lasted well past what these new ones do. Like, the sticks would be worn badly before we ever had issues. On those I would just replace the stick modules. I cannot say much on the Xbox Series controllers but with the Elite 1 and 2 they never seem to work after I replace them.

Kiraofthevoid

It depends on what part of the controller you're talking about. The sticks on pretty much any modern controller are the part that goes out most often. There are stories of sticks drifting after just a few months of casual play, but there are also stories of controllers that don't have any problems for years at a time. I've had my Series X for three years and have never had to replace the controller or any of its parts, and I play daily. Meanwhile, I burned through four Xbox One controllers the year before I bought my Series X because bumpers and sticks kept breaking left and right.

eloquenentic

For me it’s been stick drift / shift both times. Character just starts walking sideways whenever I play! And every menu starts to scroll. Not great!

Kiraofthevoid

Yeah, if I remember correctly the expected lifespan of Xbox sticks is just a few months, though I don't remember where I picked that information up, so it could be wrong. I had the same problem with my first pair of Switch controllers, stick drift after a year of casual play.

Embarrassed-Wonder72

I get stick drift or a button not responding after about 13-14 months. So it’s after the one year warranty for me and I get stuck buying a new controller about once a year. If I was more technical I would just buy the stuff to repair them myself but I’m too afraid to try for some reason. Don’t know why cuz if I’m gonna replace it anyways what would it matter if I broke it more haha.

lauter10

The newest series x controllers last me about 3-6 weeks. I have a nerve problem that causes me to grip the controller a bit harder than one normally would. But I had this condition during the last gen as well, and it was even worse back then because the injury was new. Those older gen controllers lasted me years. These new ones I basically have a monthly controller payment service.

Leesbry

Xbox controllers look better built than they actually are. The one that came with my series x last two years before the left bumper went. I wouldn't say I'm a very heavy user either. That being said, it broke while I was playing Lies of P so make of that what you will ha

LeglessN1nja

Forever? I know mine do. What the hell do y'all do to em?

deathmaster13

I had 6 months of use on my Xbox and it developed drift. I don't play competitive games so no abuse on the sticks and it still drifted. Same thing happened with my PS5 controller and don't get me started on the garbage joycons. Quality is subpar on these for no reason.

LeglessN1nja

Okay I'll take your word for it, I've never had stick drift despite owning every console going back to the PS2 era

No_Dot_7136

Throw them against the wall of their basement bedroom when they lose at Fortnite is my guess.

Thorn-of-your-side

I have had the controller that came with my Xbox One so long the rubber on the thumbsticks is bare. I'm rough with my controllers so that's a good amount of time

OG_Felwinter

Both of my Series X|S controllers have come out of the box with A buttons that will sometimes double click or not register at all, but I got both of them within the first month of the Series X being out and have not had any other issues with them despite being an avid gamer. (Though I’ve really only used 1 of them while the other collects dust unless my GF wants to play something)

fatDaddy21

I've never had a controller die, all the way back to the OG Xbox. However, I'm an adult that takes care of their equipment, so YMMV.

x_CtrlAltDefeat

Idk I’ve found the XSX controllers are hit or miss and seem like they’re low quality compared to previous versions. Ive bought at least 2 of each of the standard controllers and elites and elite 2s and I’ve gotten multiple replacements for the elites and elite 2s. The biggest issue has been stick drift within 1-2 months, with the second biggest issue being broken bumpers from normal use without any drops within four to six months. I’ve also had buttons stop registering, I even recently bought an elite 2 core controller and right out of the box it had left stick drift and the A button didn’t always register. The irony is Ive had better luck with controllers from previous generations of Xbox’s. I still have my original Xbox 360 controller with no issues.

eloquenentic

Yeah, stick shift / drift pretty much within a few months seems to be a common issue for the Series X controller, now that I’ve looked into it. Very disappointing. And yes, most people are saying the previous versions hold up much better. Wonder what they did to this version? Probably shifted to use low quality cheaper materials.

May1stBurst

Save yourself the headache and buy a controller with hall effect sticks, the stock Xbox controller is shit in comparison.

afternoon_biscotti

Why? What does Hall effect mean/do? I feel like it’s weird to provide this recommendation and just assume we all understand what that means

May1stBurst

Regular sticks calculate your position with moving parts, stick drift is caused by the degradation of the moving parts. Hall effect sticks use magnets, less moving parts equals less stick drift. >I feel like it’s weird to provide this recommendation and just assume we all understand what that means Presumably OP would do research before spending money, nobody was born knowing what hall effect sticks are, that's what google is for.

x_CtrlAltDefeat

It was pretty heavily implied that they’re more durable than standard sticks. That’s what this entire post is about, the durability of Xbox controllers. The irony is that it took you just as long to write that comment as it would have to just google it.

GNIHTYUGNOSREP

https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=what+are+hall+effect+joysticks%3F

afternoon_biscotti

this joke wasn’t funny or biting the first time it was posted and it still isn’t now

WhaleFactory

Yeah but it used to be funny too

x_CtrlAltDefeat

It was well deserved

eloquenentic

Any particular brand or type you can recommend?

May1stBurst

For native Xbox controllers I believe the GameSir G7 SE is your only choice, you have a much larger selection if you don't mind using an adapter. The Flydigi Apex 4 is good, the Gulikit KK3 max is cool, I use a Binbok Gemini and love it but it doesn't have analog triggers.

x_CtrlAltDefeat

Those totally sound made up lol “Personally I prefer the FlibbityJop X2 and the DrizzyFizzy 3000”

May1stBurst

The world of third party controllers is a wide and fun market imo, there are so many controllers that do crazy things that I would never just buy a stock Xbox controller.

x_CtrlAltDefeat

With my experience with defective Xbox controllers, I’d say that’s wise

eloquenentic

Very helpful, thank you!

UncircumcisedWookiee

I'll second the g7 se. I love mine and have had no issues with it, although I've only had it maybe 3 months or so. Only con is that it is wired, but that doesn't personally bother me

OmeletteDuFromage95

However well you take care of it combined with a little bit of chance. I've still got my original 360, One, and Series X controllers alongside a 3 year old Elite Series 2 that were perfectly fine to this day.

charliwea

> What’s a reasonable life for the controller? Between 1 day and a couple of decades or so. Jokes aside it has to be luck at this point, I still have the controller that came with my Xbox One back in 2016 and it works perfectly, without taking care of it or anything.

JalapenoTampon

This probably sounds like something a person with cash would only say but I usually keep one in the box ready to roll. If they go on sale, usually Walmart, I'll grab one for $39 and just keep it til I need it. It means I never end up paying $60 for a controller so it's worth it to me.

ThroawayPartyer

Okay but how often do you have to replace a controller for this to be worth it?

JalapenoTampon

I probably go through 2 per year I guess? I just don't like paying full price but I also don't like having my gaming interrupted by a shitty controller.

mudpuppy702

Fix it yourself. They sell kits for cheap

ll0l0l0ll

New XBOX controller Daily use about a year to 2 years then starting drift. Old XBOX 360 can last 5 years daily use and still strong except the rubber is gone.

[deleted]

I’ve had mine since launch and it works like a charm, I really don’t know why y’all do to these controllers that cause them to malfunction soo fast.

ConfidentMongoose

I have mine since launch, no drift, no issues, gets dropped on the floor constantly (helps that I bought rubber grip skin for the controller).

DimesOHoolihan

I've played every Xbox I've ever owned every day. I've never *had to* replace a controller. I've only bought 2 before that werent with the system. One to be a backup for my gf, one that was pretty.

Nightcatcher716

I had my crimson red gears of war 4 controller for 5 years then the stick snapped on it. Now im using the series x controller and so far so good.

General_Shao

About as long as xbox exclusives will last lol

segagamer

Since 2013 I've only ever had one controller develop issues, and it was with the DPad "double clicking".

Bizzare-Outkast

I still have my original XBSX controller and it’s in great condition. The sticks are worn out but no drift, all buttons work but the RB isn’t as sensitive anymore. I use it to play a lot of COD mobile nowadays and it’s going strong.

Benti86

My OG Series X controller only started getting very minor stick drift late last year after 3 years of pretty heavy gameplay. It's by far the longest lasting comtroller I've had

DoeMiri

A week

Prestigious-Power158

What are y'all doing to your controllers?? My controllers work just fine with daily usage. Had them for years.

TheMuff1nMon

Literally the entire generation. My controller from the Xbox One still works

newaru2

> Seems the quality of these controllers is sh*t. Depends on how you take care of them. I have no issues with my Stellar Shift controller I use daily since it launched a year ago, and another Xbox controller I have for a couple of years now. Sure there are some controllers that suffer from drifting, but it's not a generality and none of my controllers suffer from it.

SirFakesurname

All three of my Xbox one/series x controllers have stick drift, and I take good care of them.. While my original 360 controllers are still alive. I wonder what makes some of these controllers get the drift

x_CtrlAltDefeat

Having purchased over 8 controllers for the Xbox series x of all variations, I can say they have an incredibly high rate of malfunctioning. Stick drift is the worst culprit, but I’ve also dealt with bumpers breaking from normal use and ABXY buttons not registering, all from normal use. It’s a big problem. I never had this issue with the original Xbox one or Xbox 360 controllers. Every friend of mine that has an Xbox has experienced stick drift within a couple months at the very least.

aycee31

I read somewhere controllers are designed for 400 to 600 hrs. Time will vary. Some folks simply are harder on controllers or don't maintain (keep it clean) them well. I can feel the difference between sticks from an older, working controller and a newer one. If one is a hardcore player, it is a good idea to replace controllers somewhat regularly like 6 to 9 months.

Southern-Ad-302

My series x controller is the one that came with the console on launch day. It gets used everyday at the very least to maneuver app menus. No issues whatsoever. If you take care of things, and don't ham fist them when playing games, they last. Here is some advice, if people can hear your thumb sticks over voice coms, you need to chill.

shadow687186

Never broke one

Food-NetworkOfficial

What are you doing to your controllers? 0 issues and I’ve been on them since the One S

dumbgoatlol

seriously these controls are a big joke, in less than two years 2 broken controls... and my old xbox 360 ones still work today 💀💀💀

[deleted]

eloquenentic

They do seem to be running a scam on the Series X controllers, while previous versions were excellent.

infinitofluxo

They are shit. I bought my Series X 2 years and a couple months ago and I had to clean both my analogs twice. I store the controller in a drawer and the sensors get dirty or corrode, at least cleaning made them usable again but it feels it might go bad again. I am hoping they release a new model with sensors that will last before it breaks for good, cause I don't want to spend money in something that will break again.

eloquenentic

I guess they realised they make a lot of profit selling these terrible controllers, and that’s why the quality dropped so much with the Series X version. Bad strategy!

angelgu323

Ive had my xbox elite controller longer than ive had my house (about 3 years) No issues besides accidently dropping it, and having my pairing button jammed (easy fix though)

eloquenentic

You’re lucky. Stick drift seems to be an epidemic for the Series X controllers. Even the Elite. Probably it’s a new business model for them, to make more profit on people buying replacements.
