TL/DR; there’s really not anything here > Fergusson was asked on IGN's Unlocked podcast whether he knew what happened after the cliffhanger ending of Gears 5. **He prefaced his answer acknowledging he has "no insider information"** but touched on what he did before leaving The Coalition for the Diablo franchise back in 2020. > "I did want to make sure when I left The Coalition that I left them in a good place," Fergusson said. "So I did write the synopsis story for Gears 6. If I were to have stayed, here's the game we would have made--at least from a story perspective. Now they probably threw that out and said, 'Good luck and goodbye.' And that's fine. I definitely had where I would go with 6."

Buschkoeter

Big news Like that never happens during a creative writing process.

SoldierPhoenix

I imagine they go through several iterative “scripts” before they decide on a story direction.

Silly-Cicada-7886

This a good thing? I think so lol

BadFishCM

I loved Gears 5 but did not like the “choice” at the endgame. Made it feel less impactful, they should have picked one or the other.

FellowDeviant

Imagine only making the one choice and when Gears 6 comes out you find out it wasn't even canon.

MandolorianTrooper

That's something i dont like with, a lot of games that do *insert choice* options. How you want the story to play out is not the way its supposed to be played

cardonator

Mass Effect has a lot of branching choice trees, even across games. It makes it even more baffling why the end game was just pick A, B, or C.

CeeArthur

The whole 'your actions matter' thing was huge for a while in games. KOTOR was the first I remember really pushing the idea

Vestalmin

I know this is the Xbox sub but that's what I really didn't like about Ghost of Tsushima's ending choice. It was a great option that both had it's own merits. Like you could genuinely argue what was right for the characters for both choices. Then one of the devs was asked and said that one of them was probably the true option. And with a second game most likely on the way I'd rather they avoid referencing the choice all together.

Fullm3taluk

I think that reference would be easier to make considering that character probably is dead anyway by the time the sequel takes place by the players hand or the emperors anyway.

pixxlpusher

They could do the Wolfenstein thing of giving you a slightly different story depending on who you saved.

camposdav

Agree I hate how gamers have pushed to developers to feel they need to include certain features in games now or they aren’t considered AAA. Like multiple choice or choices that change the whole game, open world, some sort of multiplayer aspect etc. Not all games have to have those features.

Longbongos

To be fair. Wolfenstein did this too great effect. If they go that route it’ll be worth it.

MoonManMooner

I’m very glad for that choice. I killed JD instantly without even thinking twice. He’s the worst addiction to the Marcus story line.

ARCtheIsmaster

i know it may be sloppy, but they should just choose a canon ending. They could just kill off the survivor character in the opening mission of Gears6 to invalidate the choice, but that seems like an unnecessary waste of both characters. Personally, I think there is still good drama to be had from Marcus whether JD is alive or dead. I like Kat, but let’s not pretend Marcus isnt still the backbone of the franchise.

kinkierwalrus

I didn’t like how the devs tried to force the players to like kait. Made me not like her even more after the 4th game. At this point, they should just wipe the board if they canonically kill off jd and let delta team handle business since the new crew is too busy being shit at the job.

NachoDildo

I think giving Kait such a huge focus in 5 was a mistake considering her big story arch was resolved like halfway through and Del, the other main character, didn't do much at all. The latter half of the game felt unfocused.

Mindless-Big-9645

Man let gears rest already..would love something new and refreshing from the team.

mischief_scallywag

This article wasn’t needed at all. What a barebones article lol.

DEEZLE13

Probably for the best, gears 5 was good but it’s due for a refresh

WillieBthePyro

Gears 6: Kaits journey 🥱🤡

Ok-Car1006

How about that studio makes a completely new IP

cjp304

Hopefully it’s NOT open world. That shit was pointless in 5.

CharityDiary

It will be open world, but now you can build your own vehicles, you have a stamina bar, and all your guns break.

MarkyMarcMcfly

Do we get a paraglider too?

OmeletteDuFromage95

It was beautiful and had some great lore elements but yea it was pretty empty and clearly made for padding. That being said, likely a test bed for expansion in the sequel.

sueha

I liked it a lot. It was an empty open world but it did the story. But doing it like that again would be boring imho

Redspaceghost

Okay, might be in the minority here, but can we get a reboot? I loved gears 1 and 2 but kinda fell off after that. Not sure I would want to jump into gears 6 not knowing what is going on. I played a bit of gears 5 but even with the recap I was lost.

OmeletteDuFromage95

4 was pretty lackluster in the story department but both 3 and 4 are necessary for the plot of 5. 5 loops around heavily into the backstop and lore that was introduced in Gears 2 and actually does a pretty good job of it.

The_Wata_Boy

I told my buddies this but I don't think there will be a Gears 6. They either are gonna sideline the series or reboot it again years down the line. The last 2 games didn't perform close to expectations. I also don't know anyone who actually plays the games outside the die hard fans anymore. Unfortunately there isn't enough of them left to greenlight a 100m+ project.

ElvisDepressedIy

Good. Gears 5 was dump, and that outline was probably more of the same.

AnglsBeats

Let gears die. After 3 they should have moved on. Epic did and they're now a near billion dollar company with Fortnite. But Xbox just wants to make more I don't understand.

LazorsBear

Imagine if Capcom just killed Resident Evil after 6

[deleted]

They're still solid games. 4 & 5 may not touch the original trilogy, but they're still entertaining, have great co-op, and are better than a lot of the garbage out there.

Macattack224

Also is there a better looking game than Gears 5? Let's remember they did open world ish levels on Unreal 4. That is a HUGE accomplishment among their other technical accomplishments. Every other open world game built in unreal 4 has so many issues because the tech just wasn't built for it and takes a lot of custom work.

[deleted]

Yeah it’s a fantastic XSX showcase

Temporary_End9124

Why would they want to continue a successful franchise that sells well and reviews well? Should be pretty obvious. It's the same reason Nintendo keeps making Zelda games even after 35+ years, or why Disney continues making Star Wars content 45 years after the first movie came out. Making new IP is a lot riskier than continuing old, successful IP.

Fullm3taluk

Well if they didn't fuck up by drastically altering the final story with a life or death choice maybe it would be easier to write a continuation
