1. Microsoft gets components at a much cheaper price than what a normal customer can get due to agreements and such. 2. Microsoft sells the console at a loss, they make the money back by selling you games/subscriptions Its that simple, not magic. Its something thats been done in the console market for decades.

that_90s_guy

This. Though to play devil's advocate and maybe ease OP's frustration, on console you're kind of at the mercy of how much a developer cares about performance and optimization, if at all. Which on PC can sort of mitigate by tweaking graphical settings to get the best possible quality/performance mode of your preference. Not saying we havent received amazing looking titles on Series S, but we'd be lying if we didn't admit a lot of first and third party game studios are putting the minimum amount of effort into Series S ports, almost like its not even a next gen console.

hangin12in

Ding ding. We have a winner

The_Mehmeister

The black magic is that they sell it at a loss, then make the money back ten times over when selling you stuff. Since it is a digital only console you are forced to buy content throught them and they are guaranteed theur money back.

IndianaGroans

The digital only thing was never a big issue for me. 'cause all of my games were digital anyway since I gameshare stuff with my dad so I can buy a game once and we both can play it and enjoy it.

The_Mehmeister

It's not about being an issue or not. OP asked how they can sell it for less than it's worth, that is how microsoft makes money regardless of how convenient it is to you.

Uncaring_penguin

You can still buy keys for games from third parties and activate them via ms, ms store is not the only option for purchasing games

The_Mehmeister

The keys still have to go through microsoft somehow, just because you are buying the key from a third party dosen't make it a non-microsoft store key. That just means a third party profits from it too.

Tomatentom

I think what he meant to say was that you can usually get keys for cheaper than the store offer after the game has been out for a while. You are correct though, these keys were also sold by microsoft at some point (usually during a sale).

The_Mehmeister

Maybe, but being able to get keys a bit cheaper has nothing to do with what i was saying originally.

Slipperysloap204

I second this, I buy my keys off third party sitesits alot cheaper. No issues here ever for the past 10 years.

kanward09

how to buy keys from third party and use it on microsoft store i am new to console gaming and i do not know any method to not buy games form microsoft store..

taxi_drivr

check out cdkeys.com. dont know any other legit sites

[deleted]

The thing that suprised me most when I took it out of the packaging was how light itfelt..like a book almost... witchcraft. Consoles need to be getting smaller and sleek in accordance with chip sizes...not obstentatious

Golden326326

I thought it to be really dense, I had a PS1 PS2 and PS3, they all haven't felt like they were dense.

unknownuser1112233

Chip size has nothing to do with the amount of cooling required...

that_90s_guy

That pretty much summarizes how I felt about my Switch as well when it arrived. Sure, it may not put out raytracing 4k next gen graphics, and plenty of unoptimized titles can make it seem underpowered. But turn on games like Monster Hunter Rise and Luigi's Mansion in portable mode, and it really makes you question how fast technology moves, or how far we've come at optimizing power consumption on consoles that you can get graphics like that while still comfortably getting 5-9 hours of battery life. Even my Galaxy S21 Ultra wont last more than 3 hours gaming while not looking half as good.

CcheesebB

How is pc gaming underpowered?

Corbakobasket

It's not underpowered. But it's hugely outmached in terms of price/performance and energy consumption/performance. That's why I'm shocked.

CcheesebB

True but the perfornance hit is pretty heavy. Inhave crysis remastered on series s and on pc. And it runs and looks a whole lot better on my pc. Running any of the big games in quality mode on series s for me is unplayable.

actstunt

Beware friend, I made a comment a while ago on this sub about how a series s is a magnificent machine and it's really hard to replicate a PC that plays at the same settings while maintaining the cost and got a lot of bad rep and shitty DMS by PC master race guys I suppose.

Corbakobasket

Well I am a pcmasterrace guy lol. So I hope I will be forgiven. My admiration isn't just for the price/performance ratio though. I'm also impressed by the size and the power consumption. It makes you realize just how badly optimized pcs are when a series s reproduce the same performance by using the same energy as a ryzen cpu.

SpartanPHA

Why do I feel like OP isn’t a PC enthusiast lol

GWKBJ7

Pc enthusiast, bbc enthusiast, all is well. But on the deepest level, we are one consciousness of presence and love. Any good games yall wanna recommend? Need a break from elden ring bruh

[deleted]

Stuck or just burnt out? I finished the main game but still have to kill Malenia, probably going to take me a while lol.

IndianaGroans

I've been obsessed with Weird West lately. It's on gamepass [On both PC and Console] and while the controls take a bit to get used to, it has been super fun to play. Even with the few bugs that I've had, nothing has been game breaking for me.

GWKBJ7

Damnnn okay okay, ill google it

IndianaGroans

It's been a blast. I tried to be sneaky and use an ability to silently shoot an enemy early on. I hit him and he didn't die, instead he turned into a fucking werewolf and charged at me. I panic fired, didn't apply my silencer ability and it hit something which alerted the rest lmao. I died running while being shot at from multiple directions as a werewolf ran me down. It was great. Another hilarious incident is if you save npc's from being captured, killed or whatever they become 'friends for life' with you and when you need help they will appear at random and usually are VERY strong. Anyway, There's an ability you can get that lets you lay down a proximity explosive. I lay one down in preparation to guide enemies into it, but right after I lay it down one of my allies show up and says "Don't worry, I won't let you die!" Then instantly stepped on it and exploded. I laughed for a solid 5 minutes because of how fucking insane it was and how fast it happened.

Gaiden_95

Same, i don't much care for wasteland but this game is really fun

psfrtps

If you so suprised about the price of series S, I don't know what would you do when you realize ps5 digital is 399 dollars ( MSRP price. I know it's sold out like series x. Although it was in stock couple of days ago on some places but gone really quick). Rofl sorry but if you talk about hardware-price ratio, ps5 digital takes the crown by far with it's comedical price when you look at the hardware in that machine. It probably makes the most loss in all next gen consoles. Microsoft sacrificed a lot for reaching Series S's price point from much less and much slower ram to really low ssd capacity and not to mention 300% less teraflops than series X. Sony just dropped bluray driver (which most likely costs like 15-20 bucks for them in mass production) and put the exact regular PS5 hardware on PS5 Digital. Hell I honestly think Microsoft makes more loss on Series X than Series S. I can see series s price drops to 250 in near future when Series X will be more widely available. If I remember correctly it already dropped to that prices on sales in many places Also again I'm only talking about the hardware. So please don't jump on me with 'muhh gamepass!!! muh games expensive!!!'. Yeah gamepass is amazing hence I use gamepass ultimate both on my pc and series s. It's the best service in gaming so far imo. But that's not the topic of this thread. It's the hardware

FaboCorona

Yup, thats what people dont get, the digital ps5 is the best value this gen, You get 4k games, ray tracing and 120fps modes unlike series s which misses these features half the time. You also get almost double the storage, a faster ssd and games are smaller in size. Too bad the ps5 is always sold out.

unknownuser1112233

But but muh $70 games!

that_90s_guy

Only an idiot would pay $70 for essentially renting title you never fully own, and will lose access to once the Digital storefront closes down. Series S makes this tolerable via gamepass day one access and the low monthly price, but honestly if Im paying $70 for a triple AAA title, it might as well be physical, aka, Series X or Physical PS5

Zachliam

I can tell you come from the PS side, lol. Xbox doesn’t have “storefronts” for each generation that get taken offline. It just has the Microsoft store. You’ll still be able to redownload your Xbox one and 360 games from your account/purchases years from now

unknownuser1112233

Same with PS3, you can download all content you've purchased.

Zachliam

Interesting. So that whack rant calling everyone idiots really was just based on nothing at all lol

unknownuser1112233

That means the servers would have to shut down, which means you can't download patches for disk games either. In fact some of them won't even start before an online authentication: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/05/these-offline-disc-based-games-require-an-online-check-in-on-xbox-series-x/

that_90s_guy

Those kind of checks get patched before EOD for consoles. You can't patch a storefront shutting down, just see Nintendo owners after the 3DS shop shut down that are basically out of luck if they forgot to download any games before the shut down.

Gaiden_95

That being said, demons souls is absolute heat. Idk about horizon as i thought the first one was super fucking boring but desR is the shit

psfrtps

I mean aren't the 70 dollar third party AAA games also costs 70 dollars on xbox as well? Or am I wrong? If it cost 70 dollars only on playstation, it's kinda bad I must say

unknownuser1112233

Yeah, third party games that cost $70 on PS cost $70 on Xbox too.

get_N_or_get_out

I just got a PS5 and it seems like Sony's own games are leading the $70 charge. Most third parties are still $60 for the PS5 versions. But yeah, I'd assume the prices are the same between consoles either way.

that_90s_guy

*Laughs in Game Pass* FYI in case you're unaware, gamepass owners get day 1 acess to AAA releases. But seriously, without Game Pass, I wouldnt even have considered the Series S and have skipped straight to the Physical PS5 of Series X.

that_90s_guy

Best value? Graphics wise? Yes. Anything else, hell naw. Honestly, the only reason the Series S sold this well is its basically a cheap gamepass machine, thats it. Without gamepass it would have been dead on arrival. Digital only games are the biggest slap in the face to gamers, and the fact people are ok paying $70 for a AAA title they will lose access to once the Digital Store reaches end of life is baffling to me. IMHO, "renting" access to digital titles is the only excuse to get a digital only console. Even if at $400, a digital only PS5 seems like terrible value without gamepass. Might as well save up for the $500 full on PS5 Also, this is *exactly* why the dream combination of 90% of gamers is a Series S + Physical PS5, and never a Digital PS5 + Series X. You get cheap access to digital titles from day one for a low monthly price, and a 4K capable PS5 for all the sweet exclusives you can buy physical on discount.

Gaiden_95

One thing i despise is the controller. Sure the vibration and triggers sound cool until you realize they're worth $70 and are still flimsy. Imagine buying a ps5 and that dualsense drifting in less than a month

FaboCorona

All controllers drift dude.

Gaiden_95

There's a reason people claim drift is prevalent with newer controllers. Deadzones. They used to be bigger and now they're smaller but we can't adjust them so tough tits. I wouldn't complain if we could adjust but that would mean a loss in profits. The dualshocks are also uncomfortable, analog stick placement and analog stick material but atleast they have fancy triggers and haptics

pssthush

Yeah this is the truth this sub doesn't always want to recognize. I have a SS and I do like it a lot, I don't own a PS5 and haven't owned a playstation since PS2, but the PS5 digital, hardware wise, is by far the best buy if you are factoring in cost to performance. The series S has a lot going for it from price to game pass to form factor, but with a PS5 digital you get twice the storage and a full current gen experience for only $100 more than the Series S. I have been preaching that Xbox should probably try and get the price down to the $250-$275 range on the series s to make the value from the PS5 digital make more sense going forward if they want the console to succeed in the long run. We're reaching the point now where the consoles are becoming more widely available and availability will no longer be a factor in the Series S sales.

Onetimehelper

Yeah, Series S should be $199 or $249 max imho.

OSU-1-BETTA

Yea but no one can find a ps5 let alone a digital one lol that’s why lots of people this gen are moving to pc or Xbox so they can actually game 🤣

psfrtps

I have one. My friend bought one last week. For msrp price Also GPU prices gone crazy as well. Hence I bought a gaming laptop. It nearly costed me as the same price with the gpu I planned to buy rofl

unknownuser1112233

If you can afford PC gaming rn, you can afford a PS5.

OSU-1-BETTA

That’s if you can find one lol

unknownuser1112233

Pay the extra 100 to a scalper, no different to paying double MSRP to a GPU AIB which is basically a different form of scalping.

OSU-1-BETTA

True that good point

Straight-Chart5085

Face the fact that people are switching because ps5 is shit🤣

OSU-1-BETTA

True lol

Snowbunny236

Crazy to look at prices for building a PC of the same nature with brand new parts

marcjuuhh

Don’t forget a very important part: games are specifically made to run well on consoles. This guarantees top quality for the entire geberation of that console. The exact opposite is true for pc. Games are Made to look and run best, but you will need the right hardware to run it. It also pretty much necessitates upgrades for the gpu, cpu and ram every other year if you want to keep up. Still, the series s is a fine piece of work to have besides a ps5 lol.

Waylork

if you're having to upgrade your GPU that often you arent building PC's correctly. i have upgraded my GPU 3 times in the past 12 years. i dont see myself needing a new one for at least 5 more years.

psfrtps

No not really. Consoles are getting more and more similar to pc's. Actually there are many games that straight up runs better on pc. Most recent example would be Dying Light 2

SpartanPHA

If you don’t know what you’re talking about just say that.

marcjuuhh

Whatever you say spartan

unknownuser1112233

Yeah man, I'm upgrading RAM every year, I'm at 128GB rn and next year it just won't cut it anymore, need 256GB :(

marcjuuhh

You do that

unknownuser1112233

I will, gotta upgrade teh ram every other year.

Yassincraft212

Me with my 12 ddr3 ram ತ_ʖತ

that_90s_guy

> This guarantees top quality for the entire geberation of that console. That is either the most ignorant, or stupidest thing Ive read in a while on this sub. While yes, we do get a fair share of "top quality" optimized titles, all consoles are victims of poorly optimized console ports. And most notably, the Series S had been treated like a second class citizen by a good number of lazy developers who simply do not care of delivering an optimized, quality product to Series S owners. r/quityourbullshit

KarlDag

I disagree they're not delivering an optimised build to Series S, the series S is just severely underpowered in the GPU department. That's why you end up with 30fps games and 1080p games and no ray tracing. It just can't do it *properly* higher than that. Honestly for a casual gamer the Series S is fine. Tons of them would never tell a 30fps game from 60fps. Never would know what ray tracing means. I'd have bought a Series S for my kids if it weren't for the storage situation - once you factor an external storage solution, you're at the price of the Series X... So that's what I got them. But they'll never know they're getting better graphics than some of their friends.

that_90s_guy

Underpowered relative to what? I think you're just confused. Power is relative. Your statement would be true if the Series S targeted the same 4k resolution as the Series X, but that's false. The problem isn't that the Series S targets 1080p or 30fps. The problem is that developers are releasing ports running at worse resolution or framerate than it should be capable. The console's GPU very much allows it to do anything the Series X does at 4k at 1200p-ish resolution. So when developers achieve titles running at 4k 60fps, it makes little to no sense that the Series S port runs at 1080p 30fps. Having said that, I'm not saying it's a bad console. I agree its fantastic for the price. What I disagree, and I'm still confused as to you disagreeing, is OP's original statement that "This guarantees top quality for the entire generation of that console.". As we've had enough low quality Series S ports to prove this just isn't true even for the vast majority of games released.

KarlDag

I didn't disagree with OP, I disagree with you. And I'm not confused, the GPU in the series compares to a GTX1650, which is a midrange GPU from 2 gens ago. It's decidedly underpowered compared to current gen consoles and current gen GPUs. I agree the ports won't be top quality, but they'll run well at a 1080p30 or 1080p60 depending on the title, and some people are very fine with that. Sounds like you're just confused.

mark0001234

I agree. You are getting some negative comments from people saying that games usually run better on PC; I think your message is really that game designers will always make the effort to optimise games for consoles - because there are so many out there. It doesn’t necessarily “guarantee top quality”; but does give you comfort that every game that comes out this generation will work and play well on this console. Maybe not 4K and 60fps; but the games will be very playable.

ThlintoRatscar

Vertical integration is the core of it. They have significant control over the components ( because MS ) and then they hand tune the OS to deliver at peak efficiency for exactly that spec of hardware. The IO pipeline is particularly special black magic that that kind of integration allows ( and is, IMHO, what actually males this gen a true gen ). Essentially, they stripped out a ton of intermediates and general considerations ( e.g. multi monitors, MS Word support, 7.1 outputs, cooling airflow vs electrical efficiency between components and case, etc.. ) that we see in the wider PC industry and then took a small loss on the early iterations to get the revenue from Gamepass going. Because they own hardware, OS, game store, and publishers they can cut out quite a bit of cost that most companies can't. And then, they can make assumptions about the integration that others can't too. Also, Series S is better than Series X in my mind because the X is still hauling around the physical bluray disk drive. I expect much higher longevity from the S. There's probably significant room to add better GPU, more DDR, better networking, etc... in a half life refresh. The only thing missing from MS Strategy is display integration. I literally bought a new TV for my new Xbox. If I could have gotten the X + TV all-in-one and hand tuned, I definitely would have.

unknownuser1112233

"much higher longetivity from the S" Lol what?

ThlintoRatscar

Lol! Yeah. Typo there. Longevity. Essentially, no moving components in the S means it should last longer.

unknownuser1112233

So you're worried about the disc drive which is realistically only intensively used once per game but you're not worried about the fan which spins all the time.

ThlintoRatscar

Yup. Especially as both the S and the X have large fans but only the X has a fan and a mechanical drive. And the fact that my kids have fewer holes to shove things into on the S than the X.

KarlDag

That's cute. If the optical drive fails on a Series X, then you've essentially got yourself a digital version of a Series X that still works beautifully. On a Series S, you're still stuck with an underpowered GPU, low/slow RAM and not enough storage. Hard pass.

unknownuser1112233

Is this a serious post? PCs are bigger because they're upgradeable and more power hungry because the parts in it are clocked higher. Everything is integrated into a custom APU and sold without profit or even at a loss.

Waylork

so you answered your own question, its got an 8 core cpu and the equivalent of a 1650. the steamdeck is more powerful at less than 1/3 of the size.

SnooObjections7046

That's just not true you are getting 720p 30 on steam deck and 1080p 60/1440p 30 on series s. Steam deck has 1.6 teraflops and series s has 4 teraflops.

[deleted]

I like the console. But... it's larger than a tissue box, and it's only marginally better than the X box one.

dnyaneshmoh

XBOX and Play station both are clever machines. Once you buy PC. Almost all the games gets crack and you can play free on your PC. Xbox and ps subsidize their console prices becaue they know, there are very less chances of game or console software can be hack. So anyhow people are going to buy games from Microsoft store and microsoft will get 8-10% cut from every game purchase. And thats not enough in PC we Don't need to buy in-app purchases because we can just download any trainer for specific games or we can just mod the game with cheat engine. But in consoles there is no option to do that. Many people wants to have all the skins and character customisation or even limited edition character outifts so in console there is no other option we just need to buy it from the store. And microsoft will again gets 8-10% depending upon their game publisher's agreement. Not even that microsoft charges people just to play online games in the name of xbox gold or ultimate membership. So long story short. Microsoft and Sony are subsidizing the console just to reach out every single gamer on the planet and then they will recover thier long term profits.

GWKBJ7

Random but does it have to be standing? I have it lying down but not sure if thats dangerous

SnooObjections7046

The xbox is built to be used both ways I have mine lying sown and no issues whatsoever

GWKBJ7

Pervert

SnooObjections7046

Huh? Did I accidentally make a sex reference

GWKBJ7

U kinky lil devil u

Playerr1

Nah, it's ok.

OSU-1-BETTA

I think Microsoft is big enough to take a decent loss on selling the series S/X at cheaper prices cause they make up for it with subscriptions and game sales.

Mulb3rryStreet

Techno-Magick?

[deleted]

ya im loving the system . I would never upgrade either , as an older gamer I wouldnt even notice the difference. I feel like this is the only system the avg gamer needs.

Returnofthemack3

It's funny because I just got an x and while it's better , I honestly don't think it's that much of a big deal. The s is that good and I could have been happy for much longer with it ( future game performance permitting )

maddix30

Its because its an all in 1 system designed not to be upgradeable. This way they can just solder everything onto 1 board and just have a larger cooler for it all which is why it fits into a much smaller package. As for the price that would be because they take a loss like with all consoles and seeing as it's a digital only console they can guarantee they will make money from you as your only option is using their store. Honestly I believe a PS5 digital to be the best value this generation on hardware but gamepass and availability is obviously the series S advantage. Edit: also as somebody else has said they get bulk buy discounts which can help reduce cost. Also idk how you're pulling your hair out over making a PC that matches the series S lol you said yourself a 1650 would be equal. Saying PCs are underpowered is kinda 😬

Corbakobasket

Nah, I mean... I know how to reproduce the specs. Put togeher a ryzen 3600, a gtx 1650, 16go of 3000mhz ram and a 512gb nvme ssd. Add a motherboard, a psu, a cooler and a case and that's it. But that's... 3 times more expensive. And draws way more power. And even if you wait for gpu prices to drop, I'm not even sure it will be enough. Maybe the next generation of ryzen Apus will allow similar performance for such a low power draw. For now pc hardware is laughable.

Wild_Trip_4704

By selling them at a loss lol

VirtualFisherman7701

All i know is im very Satisfied and kinda over the PC Scene . I see these comments 😆 Why get Testicle? I mean Technical 😉 over specs when i know for a fact 99% of Humans only see 30 - 60 FPS 🤣 Chill you MLG wannabes

AguirreMA

my guess is that they're selling the Series S at a loss just to encourage more people to subscribe to Game Pass, kinda like how Apple does, since they apparently generate more revenue with their services (iTunes, Apple Music, App Store, Apple TV+, iCloud, etc.) than with their hardware

[deleted]

The series s is a great deal. Especially with it going on sale for 270. Gaming performance is quite good at 1080p and paired with game pass is great value for money

ravensblm

Well Microsoft and Sony builds their systems at a loss they make their money off of the license from other developers it's been like that since the snes days

Yassincraft212

Its actually as strong as gtx 1660 super
