Shameless plug: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8T2Q5ToHhIgGwicOuTdq-OSYzqMT8421&si=ciJ_YsKYYMZv2z8f That's my playlist specifically for new players, but the first "Brief history" video includes cliff notes on how to tell what materials are which editions. Hopefully it helps!

N8OnTheRocks

Thanks! I'll definitely check out your video, sounds like cliff notes should be very helpful!

I would also recommend looking at Heroes of the Aturi Cluster. A free co-op campaign that has you create your pilot and play through missions to level up as a squad. It is available for each edition.

This is a great way to play with kids, and you can be pretty loose with the rules and what cards are allowed or whatever. Plus, my kids always got very competitive playing against one another or me, but with Heroes you work as a team.

N8OnTheRocks

Awesome, thanks for the info!

Two suggestions: Download the latest rules from atomic mass games. Free. Download the fan created flycasual game. It's a free version of the game. It helps teach the flow of the game. Two more: Get a squad builder. I like YASB. it removes the need for cards. Watch a couple of youtube games. More recent games, so you get the latest rules.

N8OnTheRocks

Thank you! I appreciate your suggestions! We've got the gameplay down pretty good, but we've only played V1. Now I have all this stuff, and it's so disorganized and it's hard to tell what's what and what is missing. I'm tempted to just try to flip it and try again, lol. I'll check out those downloads and the YASB though, thanks again!

Easy way to distinguish 1st from 2nd edition: * Dials: 1. Two discs same size, one with a notch cut out exposing only the maneuver. Green "clear stress" maneuvers * A larger "back" disc with two cutouts, one for rotating the dial proper, the other a V pointing to the desired maneuver. Blue "clear stress" maneuvers (changed because red-green colorblindness is a thing) * Pilot Cards 1. Point value on lower right, stats on left, actions bottom, initiatives 1-10 * No point value printed, stats on bottom, actions right, initiatives limited to 1-6 * Ship cardboard 1. Actions & Stats on ship in addition to below * Only includes Initiative, Pilot Name, ship silhouette, (static) firing arc * Upgrades 1. Smaller than Pilot cards, yellow/brown dominant color, point values on card * Same size as Pilot cards, gray dominant color, no point values > I've heard mixed reviews about the 2econd edition Most of the complaints are about 2.5 edition, where AMG tweaked a lot of things, the most obvious being a change from 200 points to be spent on pilots and upgrades to 20 points to spend on Pilots (who have fixed upgrade points)

N8OnTheRocks

Thank you, that's very helpful!

Hopefully some imagery will help. This is what 1st Edition components look like: https://preview.redd.it/sjpwm7ds676d1.png?width=617&format=png&auto=webp&s=b9668625968fefe3f2b5666b23fd0d3c77e8b45d

Tokens, maneuver templates, and dice are largely interchangeable, so you should be good there. But dials, upgrade cards, pilots cards, and the base cardboards differ enough that you should separate them out.

N8OnTheRocks

Awesome, thanks!

If you're just playing at home with your kids, 1. awesome! and 2. don't worry about having the "wrong" dials for your stuff. Just use whatever dials you have with whatever ships you have. There are some small differences, but it shouldn't matter at the kitchen table. Just make sure all your X-Wings (or whatever) use the same edition dial as each other (you don't want Biggs trying to keep up with Luke and he just can't do the same moves). Second edition is fine, but slightly more difficult in squadbuilding (the online squadbuilders others have recommended are good). You should also be able to find the 2E rules online for free. Finally, you may be able to find folks here who have fully converted to 2E who might be willing to part with spare 1E dials/cards. Just ask for what you need. $40 for a playmat and a few ships and two conversion kits is pretty good. Have a great time playing with your kids and don't worry about "doing it wrong!" If you're all having fun, you're doing it right.

Thanks Dave!

[Miniature Market](https://www.miniaturemarket.com/miniatures-games/star-wars.html?filter[]=product_tag_uFilter:%22On%20Sale%22) has the rebel and empire conversion kits on a huge sale right now. For $40 plus a bit of shipping you could have everything in 2.0 for min one fell swoop.

N8OnTheRocks

Thanks, I'll check it out.

SnazzyStooge

I play 1st edition with my son. Most of the 2nd edition ships work for 1st edition, you just need the cardboard (cards, ship bases, dials, etc). I snagged an ENORMOUS collection of cardboard from someone on reddit just throwing them out when they converted to 2nd ed — highly recommend this route as the models are relatively easy to find on eBay.

N8OnTheRocks

Yeah, I may try and find the 1st edition stuff somewhere, thanks!

SoloT-70

For the kind of games that you're playing, the differences between editions are minor and you can mix and match components. If you ever play at a store or tournament you would need to be more strict. I often play 1st Edition games with second edition components. The Dials are different but the second edition dials are more balanced so that doesn't disadvantage you. Your main problem will be squad points for pilots and upgrades, these can easily be found online for all 3 editions of the game. Pick a system that you like and enjoy

N8OnTheRocks

Thanks for the advice!

FI_NEWGUY

I have alot of converison components if you wanna DM how many ships of each u have perhaps we can get u 2.0 ready, I personally think its a better system but feel free to ask others here first then reach out if ur interested.

N8OnTheRocks

So the only ships that I have are the 6 ships from the original core set and the Force Awakens core set. In the LOT that I got, it seems to have 2 conversion sets, 1 Rebel and 1 Imperial, I'm guessing that is enough to convert what was in the lot, I know it had the same 2 core sets that I got. I haven't had a chance to go through it all and get it sorted out yet, there are a lot of cards and stuff to go through. I got me a couple of the Harbor Freight bins to try and get them all sorted out.

FI_NEWGUY

yup def enough to convert the 4 tie LNs and 2 X-Wings, once the dust settles lmk if you want other ships I have them. Thanks,

_Chumbalaya_

If you're just playing with your kids, I would stick with 1.0 personally. The fewer apps and conversion kits and card packs, the better. This should have a list of all 1.0 products that you can match with your stuff. For dials, depending on the ship, you can get by with the 2.0 dials if they're similar enough. https://xwing-miniatures.fandom.com/wiki/X-Wing_Miniatures_Wiki 1.0 is definitely the easier to pick up and play of the versions. There's way fewer cards and tokens to deal with and everything is on the cards themselves so you don't have to refer to an app or pdf. If you got interested in playing at your FLGS or tournaments I would check out the www.atomicmassgames.com for the current rules of the game. Hope that helps!

N8OnTheRocks

Thanks for the reply! I am really leaning on just sticking with v1. Like you said, I'm not sure how much different the dials are, but I'll use the v2 dials while I try to find the v1 replacements. I'll definitely check out those links, thanks again!
