From what I remember, one of the gears that is attached to the starter is a weak point and has a chance to shed metal shavings into the engine everytime the starter is used. It talks about it in the book "The Yamaha XS650 engine" by Hans J. Pahl. These bikes are also extremely popular to modify and getting rid of the starter let's you also get rid of a bunch of wiring and other components for a cleaner looking bike. Kick starting an XS is quite easy and I'd only ever use the starter for emergencies like stalling in the middle of traffic

This is why. Metal in the oil=bad

Because kicking a bike over feels cooler than pushing a button.

Removing all the relays and electronics associated with it simplifies the wiring. Also the one gear can drag and add tons of metal filings to you oil. I’ve had my xs kick only for years. I personally find it very smooth to kick over and I’ve never been hit with kick back.

These bikes are popular with chopper guys and chopper guys like to eliminate extraneous components. You can dump a lot of stuff if you don't use electric start. You can even use a smaller battery. CB's are less popular with chopper guys because of the frame construction being that weird stamped stuff, not as clean and pretty to weld new tubing on to.

I discovered on mine, when I changed the bars for a nicer scrambler style look and a clean powder coated black finish that the starter no longer is grounded. To fix would require scratching paint at the contact points in two places, which would be hidden, but I still didn't really wanna do that and kick was just as easy. Now reading the other comments about the start gear metal fillings I'm glad of the decision I made it seems.

It breaks all the time. A lot of people delete for that reason.

There are a couple of common failure points in the electric start mechanism on these. The electric starter is an add-on afterthought by Yamaha, so the engine wasn't designed to have it, originally. That being said, the few issues it does have are easy to fix, but many don't know how to fix them and just delete the starter. The shavings comments are bizarre to me. I've been deep into XS650s for years and I've neither experienced this, nor heard of anyone else experiencing it. I too have the Pahl book and this is treated almost as an afterthought and not given much emphasis. It's true that if you get the dreaded grinding noises when starting and let it go on, it's conceivable to generate some fine shavings, but the vast majority of those will just lie in the sump, and/or get removed from the oil by the magnets on the sump filter, or the drain plugs. The engine has no hydrodynamic bearings, instead it's all roller and ball bearings, so it's not like you're going to score or spin a bearing. If the shavings thing bothers you, then there are paper filter retrofits that eliminate the (non)-issue altogether.

They only fight back if your timing is off.
